Greedy Book.......2001-08-09
I ranked it 1 though it is one of the best book in telephony. It is really disapointing for its excessive price. A book should not be like that

Storey's Basic Country Skills: A Practical Guide to Self-Reliance
ASIN: 1558217274 |
Amazon.com
Granted, if you live in the city and have no land or tools, the primary use of this charming reproduction of an 1884 classic self-help book for farmers and homesteaders will be entertainment and fantasy. But if you are living in the country or would like to, the basic, straightforward wisdom in Farm Conveniences will serve the modern homesteader just as well as those of the last century. A collection of the best ideas garnered from farmers of the time on shed-building, trapping, constructing fences and gates, and making carts, a log boat, and other essential implements for rural agriculture, it also includes advice on land management to prevent erosion, manure use, and how to build shelters of many kinds for livestock and people. The ideas were sound, practical, and well tested then and are surprisingly useful even today for readers with an eye toward self-sufficiency and homegrown agriculture. --Mark A. Hetts

Spring of Ideas.......2002-04-17
The contents of this book are borrowed from a very old book (printed in the 19th century I think), and thus the contraptions and devices that are shown therein have been eclipsed by modernizations of the same things. The sheer ingenuity of these devices gives the book its worth in the present day. Where I probably wouldn't build many of the devices exactly as they would, the illustrations and explanations (problem/solution format) gave me ideas for new and better devices. This book is excellent for the inventor, and perhaps even the occasional historian/nostalgia-enthusiast. Well worth its price (I recieved it as a Christmas gift!)
Great catalogs of common sense........1999-07-22
These books (there are two others in this series, I think - "Farm Appliances" and "Fences") are truly wonderful. I have lived my whole life on a farm and I have seen some of the things shown in these books, but to see the whole range of rural inventions in one place is an overwhelming testimony of the ingenuity and brilliance of our forefathers. I also think the introductions by Denis Boyles are the funniest things I've read in a long time.

Being a collection of essays by writers of varying talent, this book is not what you'd call a page-turner, unless you have a healthy curiosity about sun-earth physics. I found it a very useful introduction to the field, and plan to use it to guide undergraduate research (I'm a physicist with a doctorate, teaching at an institution with an undergraduate physics program.)The authors have avoided the use of equations, and for me that was a drawback, but for undergrads or laymen, it might be helpful. Lots of very interesting physics here.

Spin Glass Theory and Beyond (World Scientific Lecture Notes in Physics, Vol 9)
ASIN: 0817638636 |
Book Description
A collection of memories that does more justice for the Marine grunt than any book has done in ages. Sure, there have been tons of biographies written about leaders and their combat expeditions; even more that deal with specific battles and the glorious outcomes attain. The author chooses to write about the interaction that no training can provide. He writes of stateside bases and far off places, of lessons learned and mysteries revealed. Most active duty grunts have seen some form of combat, evacuations or humanitarian exercises. The author is no different. He chooses not to write about his awards or deployments but of the brotherhood that is built during a tour, and the way the unselfish and courageous warrior heart is formed. The author shares his clearest recollections that are far and away beyond those that any fiction writer has dreamed up or any fancy series writer has yet been able to obtain. This then is not a book of interviews and side bars with the top brass who point their fingers and give the order but more about then men who take the order; learning from their mistakes, swearing and smiling as they go.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for any FORM ER MARINE.......2004-10-21
Bought this for myself and my father. Two old war horses looking for the real stories. Chadz's editor had a few troubles yet the truth is there, funny, insightful and a heck of a memory from this Marine... in this world of money making ex-marines, the ability that this Marine showed with a tad of self deprication was refreshing
Good writers need editors, too.......2004-07-27
Chadz is a fresh voice with an ear for dialogue and pacing. But even budding Salingers need editors and proof readers. Too many typos and miscues in this one to rate Five Stars. Blame it on the publisher.
Still, recommended reading for would-be, current and former Jarheads.

The stories are remarkable.......2004-07-11
The author did a outstanding job timelining the days and duties of a Marine Grunt and Marine Security Force Sentry. The photos and attachments brought back a floodgate of memories and although this is not a book for my mother, it is one for Marines like myself, to rest, reflect and remember
outstanding!.......2004-03-15
I started to wonder if the world revolved around what publishers would allow or what phrases authors could use to score the biggest payday....then I read this book. Chadz did a marvelous job at showing the webs that are weaved by grunt Marines during their first 4 year tour. I can't say anything more except to applaud him for not throwing the CORPS under the bus like so many other Marine authors have done over the past year and that goes without saying what some of the "reporters" reported on. Good job...great read, helluva memory!
Comical View at the highs and lows.......2004-01-08
Great Book. Funny informative, face paced, ...a look iside the Corps from a grunts eyes that allows me to show a bunch of the stories to friends and prove that the world of the "grunt Marine" is ever changing, fast paced and always filled with adventure, learning and trials. One gets to cover basically a full tour with the author...great for Marines to remember and new Marines and Marine families to learn.

Customer Reviews:
My son's favorite series!.......2007-03-08
My 10 year old son loves Hank Zipzer, I do too. This book is great, very funny and so real you could just imagine your child as Hank. This book is one of our favorites in the series. They are all wonderful books, very entertaining and funny for both children and adults. My son really relates to Hank he has similar issues with reading and writing (Dyslexia), so for him the books are such a great moral boost. These books are written easy enough for my son to read, but yet so entertaining they do not seem too young for a 10 year old. We love them so much we bought a small set for my son's classroom and the school library. This is a series most boy's will relate too!
hank zipzer the worlds best unichever!love it!!.......2005-08-24
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!i love the hank zipzer books!!my friend recimended it and i love it.its about the worlds best unichever and all the trouble he gets himself into!!
The Night I Flunked my Field Trip - Good Book.......2005-06-15
I liked how the author had the idea to make Hank lose his permission slip to go on the field trip with his friends. Because his mean teacher gave him only one hour to look for it. It was funny how the captain on the ship made them mop pee off the decks.
I think I liked, "Help I'm trapped in 4th grade" a little bit better. Because it had more funny parts.
Michael - age 10
Great book series for 4th grade boys.......2004-12-13
These books are hilariously funny for 4th grade boys. I'm sure girls can read them too but girls have a dozen or so book series to chose from so this one's for the little guys. I have a difficult time getting my 9 year old to read on his own but with these book, he reads every night and begs for the next book. According to my son, get the first book and then any of the following books can be read in any order.
I can't wait for more Zipzer Adventures!.......2004-11-24
I read the book, The Night I Flunked My Field Trip by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver. I liked the book because it told about a kid who has a hard time remembering things. The book tells about how Hank tries and tries until he finally gets it right!
One of my favorite parts is when Hank unties the rope to learn how to tie it. He doesn't know how to read the directions but he thinks he can figure it out for himself by doing it. The only problem with that is that he doesn't get it right and the ship drifts out to sea.

The Battle for Spain: The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939
ASIN: 0299157903 |
Amazon.com
William Herrick provides an eye opening and fiery account of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 in his powerful memoir Jumping the Line. Raised with Communism in his blood, it was inevitable that Herrick would volunteer to fight in Spain with the hope of quelling fascism and battling for the rights of workers. Young and idealistic, Herrick soon learned that both the fascists and Communists committed grotesque acts against humanity, and shame is etched in many of Herrick's accounts of the war. In the 1950s Herrick went on to testify against his former Communist comrades, and again a great sense of guilt pervades his account of this difficult decision.
Herrick's life is anything but dull. He has worked with Orson Welles, met Rita Hayworth, lived as a hobo, and almost died from a bullet wound during the Battle of Jarama. Herrick is a controversial figure who exposed Communist crimes to the media. At the same time he is honest--admitting he too would have done anything asked of him by the Communist party. This is a gutsy memoir told in plain prose, with enough wit to keep the subject from becoming overly dry.
Book Description
An eye-opening account of time served in the great battles of our century for workers rights, against Fascism, Communism, and racismJumping the Line is the life story of an American original. William Herrick chronicles his adventures and misadventures on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, in (and very much out of) the Communist Party, driving a tractor on a communal farm in Michigan, jumping the line as a hobo, organizing African American sharecroppers in Georgia, at work with Orson Welles, and immersed in his own writing. Herrick chronicles a life of great conviction and great disillusion. He went to Spain in 1936 to fight against the Fascists and there witnessed the horrifying acts that Fascists and Communists alike committed, before he was felled by a near-fatal wound. Here he tells about the life that led him, a working-class Jewish kid from New York, into the idealism and then the murky politics of this internecine conflict. From the bloody fight in Spain he takes us to the battlefields of the Communist movement in the U.S., where he found himself parading up and down the garment district of Manhattan, denouncing his former comrades. When Paul Berman interviewed Herrick in the Village Voice in 1986, for the fiftieth anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, Herricks remarks so incensed other veterans of the Abraham Lincoln battalion that they picketed the paper. What William Herrick has to say doesnt always go down easily. But for those who like the truth, with a dash of wit and a healthy dose of history, it can be exhilarating.
Customer Reviews:
The American Orwell.......2002-03-18
"Jumping the Line" is a hobo phrase for "riding the rails," or hitching a ride on a freight car. It also brings to mind crossing boundaries, maybe even switching sides. Herrick has done both. Beginning life as a rail-riding hobo, Herrick developed an awareness of the plight of the downtrodden and eventually became not a member but employee of the American Communist Party. Herrick was hard-working element of the Party and an able union organizer and cell initiator. Willing to put his life on the line in backing his beliefs, Herrick traveled to Spain with the Abraham Lincoln brigade to fight the fascists in the Spanish Civil War. Comintern, the International Communist Party, hoped this effort would lead to a home for Communism in Spain. While Herrick's soldiering was brief (he quickly took a bulled to the neck, nearly crippling him), the Communist atrocities and double-dealing there made him see the Party in an entirely different light. Returning to the States an anarchist at heart, Herrick had a wife to support and was tied to the Party for a paycheck. His outspokenness about the Stalin-Hitler pact led to his dismissal and his full emergence as an anarcho-social democrat. Appearing in these pages as Herrick formalizes his distrust of all power is such figures as Emma Goldman, Cole Porter and Herrick's former employer Orson Welles. This fascinating work is historically enlightening and a textbook in the formation of practical anarchism from an adventurer-author struck from the same mold as George Orwell.
An Honest Account of an Abraham Lincoln Battalion Veteran.......1999-02-21
"Jumping The Line" is a brutally honest and frank account of William Herrick's life on the American Left - as a young Communist who quickly became disillusioned with the excesses of Stalinism and of Soviet Anti-Semitism. An early volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion fighting Fascism in Spain, Herrick was badly wounded in the first major battle fought by the Lincolns at Jarama. Transferred to a hospital, Herrick witnessed firsthand the betrayals and backstabbing policies of the Soviet Secret Police and their minions. In one horrific episode, Herrick recounts how, as an "unreliable" he was forced to be involved in an GPU\International Brigade execution of accused "Trotskyist" civilians, an event that has haunted him to this day.
Returning home, Herrick then suffered the emotional wound of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, and being Jewish, promptly broke with the Party - courageously demonstrating as "a veteran of the Spanish Civil War - victim of the Hitler-Stalin Pact. He went on to adventures serving as a majordomo of sorts for Orson Welles - and some of the tales told here about "Citizen Kane" are quite hilarious. Herrick once told Life Magazine that his reasons for going to fight Hitlerism in Spain were that "As A Jew I know what Hitler is doing to my people".While he later admitted that it was the Party who instructed this to say the aforementioned remark, his pride and emotional attachment to his people clearly stands out in "Jumping The Line" as well as his "no prisoners taken" attitude towards both Fascism and Communism. This is indeed a memoir that Jews and all interested in the Spanish Civil War worldwide should read and while Herrick is a man who will admit his faults with candor, he is nonetheless a brave man and excellent writer - "Hermanos" is also strongly recommended by this reviewer.
The best memoir of the Spanish Civil War by an American.......1998-09-08
This book is, very simply, the best memoir ever published by an American volunteer in the Spanish Civil War. It is a relentless autopsy on the murdered idealism of the young Communists who went to fight the fascists in Spain but ended up serving as hard guys for Russian dictator Josef Stalin and his secret police. It also shows clearly that the native supporters of the Spanish left were out for more than just a repudiation of fascist aggression: they were fighting for a social revolution, based on the labor movement, of a kind Stalin hated and feared much more than he did the fascists. This book also stands as a uniquely truthful and beautiful account of the lives of American and international Communist cadres; Bill Herrick speaks for every comrade who risked his or her life fighting for the world revolution in the 1930s, only to be brutally betrayed by Stalinism. It is extremely doubtful that a better book about the appeal of revolutionary Communism or the experience of its youthful militants will ever be written, at least in English.

Inside view of modern Polish history.......1999-12-15
When Poland emerged from under the mantle of Communism I followed the news avidly. This is the reality of what was going on behind the scenes. I have, for example, completely changed my mind about Walesa. It's a great read but I must criticize it for being too sparse with it's stories. Having been in such a priveleged position the author surely must have been able to give us more. I echo the sentiment that there must be a follow up. The juxtaposition of reconstructing your house while helping to reconstruct your nation is beautiful!
Excellent story ... history up close and personal!.......1997-07-16
If you are interested in the history of Poland, and want to learn about contemporary life in that country, but are tired of reading dry accounts written by someone without a real connection to the country and its people... this book is for you!
I enjoyed the manner in which Mr. Sikorski provides both a personal and national history, woven together to keep the reader interested. I would have enjoyed more details about the actual reconstruction of his manor house. However, his insights into the post-Communist government, it strengths and weaknesses, and his accounts of involvement in the Solidarity movement were very interesting.
I hope he writes another installment when he eventually finishes the manor house and the current Polish government has a chance to play out its role in Polish and world history.
