5 out of 5 stars The You Can Attract Butterflies to Your Yard Book.......2001-08-01

This little gem of a book is a reader not a looker. It is very important reading for those just beginning butterfly gardening. It would seem as though Mathew Tekulsky has answered every question with a short to the point yet informative answer.

Chapters cover understanding gardening for butterflies by understanding butterflies. Mr. Tekulsky instructs us on all aspects of ow to get started, including which plants are needed for both larval food and nectar food.

There is a chapter devoted to activities which include photography hints, things to do with kids and building hibernation boxes.

Extensive appendices list 50 Common butterflies, and where they are found and what plants they like. There are also lists of where to obtain butterflies and entomological equipment, as well as, butterfly organizations and recommended further readings.

                      Book Description

This work examines the beautiful and important physical concept known as the "geometric phase," bringing together different physical phenomena under a unified mathematical and physical scheme.

Several well-established geometric and topological methods underscore the mathematical treatment of the subject, emphasizing a coherent perspective at a rather sophisticated level. What is unique in this text is that both the quantum and classical phases are studied from a geometric point of view, providing valuable insights into their relationship that have not been previously emphasized at the textbook level.

                      Key topics and features:

                      • Background material presents basic mathematical tools on manifolds and differential forms.

                      • Topological invariants (Chern classes and homotopy theory) are explained in simple and concrete language, with emphasis on physical applications.

                      • Berry's adiabatic phase and its generalization are introduced.

                      • Systematic exposition treats different geometries (e.g., symplectic and metric structures) living on a quantum phase space, in connection with both abelian and nonabelian phases.

                      • Quantum mechanics is presented as classical Hamiltonian dynamics on a projective Hilbert space.

                      • Hannay’s classical adiabatic phase and angles are explained.

                      • Review of Berry and Robbins' revolutionary approach to spin-statistics.

                      • Problems at the end of each chapter.

Graduate students in mathematics with some prior knowledge of quantum mechanics will learn about a class of applications of differential geometry and geometric methods in quantum theory. Physicists and graduate students in physics will learn techniques of differential geometry in an applied context.

                      Book Description

Living in a dingy cell with no food and water and witnessing the inhumane treatment of others, 460th Bomb Group survivor John L. Lenburg tells the remarkable story of his capture and experiences a prisoner of war (code name: Kriegsgefangenen #6410) in a Nazi concentration camp. In this well-written and illustrated history, Lenburg describes the tragic events and missions of the 460th Bomb Group, featuring recollections by many of his fellow crew members, and the recognition that followed 50 years later for he and his crew.

5 out of 5 stars A saga of violence, suffering, strength of character.......2003-01-05

Kriegsgefangenen #6410: Prisoner Of War is the memoir of John L. Lenburg, a World War II serviceman who served with the 460th Bomb Group, and became prisoner of war in German custody when his B-24 was shot out of the sky. Lenburg was given the code name Kriegsgefangenen #6410 by his captors, and was compelled to brave truly horrific conditions of captivity for nearly a year, ultimately surviving to eventually walk to freedom. A powerful saga of violence, suffering, strength of character and the determination to persevere, Kriegsgefangenen #6410: Prisoner of War is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of World War II combatant biographies and eye-witness memoirs.

                          Book Description

The life of Jan Evangelista Purkinje (1787-1869) has fascinated students from many disciplines. Histologists marvel at his early descriptions of cells; physiologists admire his attempts to relate structure to function; pharmacologists view in awe his heroic experiments on self-administered drugs; forensic scientists acknowledge his role in the use of fingerprints for identification; and Czech patriots salute his awakening of pride in their nation. Yet all these achievements followed his initial enquiries into vision. It is this psychological dimension that fostered this collaboration.

As the title suggests, the present volume is bifocal. In the narrow sense it refers to Purkinje's studies of vision, but in its broader view it concerns Purkinje's anticipation of neuroscience. Purkinje provided evidence to support both its cellular and its conceptual base. At the cellular level his acute vision is immortalized within our bodies. At the conceptual level, he sought to relate subjective phenomena to their objective underpinnings--to link psychology to physiology.

Vision provides a bond that unites psychology and physiology, and it is this bond that was strengthened by Purkinje's enquiries. The authors have tried to provide a context in which Purkinje's descriptions of visual phenomena can be placed. In some cases this exposes clear precursors of research for which Purkinje has been credited. In others, there was nothing to suggest the phenomena that he exposed. The book translates Purkinje's initial masterpiece on subjective vision and places it in the context of emerging views of neuroscience.

                          Book Description

Theodore Parker (1810-1860) was a powerful preacher who rejected the authority of the Bible and of Jesus, a brilliant scholar who became a popular agitator for the abolition of slavery and for women's rights, and a political theorist who defined democracy as "government of all the people, by all the people, for all the people"--words that inspired Abraham Lincoln. Parker had more influence than anyone except Ralph Waldo Emerson in shaping Transcendentalism in America.

In American Heretic, Dean Grodzins offers a compelling account of the remarkable first phase of Parker's career, when this complex man--charismatic yet awkward, brave yet insecure--rose from poverty and obscurity to fame and notoriety as a Transcendentalist prophet. Grodzins reveals hitherto hidden facets of Parker's life, including his love for a woman who was not his wife, and presents fresh perspectives on Transcendentalism. Grodzins explores Transcendentalism's religious roots, shows the profound religious and political issues at stake in the "Transcendentalist controversy," and offers new insights into Parker's Transcendentalist colleagues, including Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott. He traces, too, the intellectual origins of Parker's epochal definition of democracy as government of, by, and for the people.

The manuscript of this book was awarded the Allan Nevins Prize from the Society of American Historians.

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Transcendentalist.......2007-04-08

Transcendentalism has never been easy to define, all the more so because its two most well-known adherents, Emerson and Thoreau, were highly poetic souls who had much better uses for their rhetoric than in crafting creeds or clear-cut manifestoes. It is a pleasure then to read Grodzins' biography of Theodore Parker, in whose life and work we can see more clearly the philosophical and personal dramas that played themselves out within the Unitarian Church in regard to its Transcendentalist sympathizers - in particular, the attempts of one Transcendentalist to define his views against the charges of Deism. Religion is a key concern for Transcendentalism, though in Emerson and Thoreau there is no sense that organized religion can play a key role in the individual's enlightenment. Parker remained in the Church as he struggled to know and preach Truth, and gained a large following. Our understanding of Transcendentalism is eminently richer for our appreciation of his struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for History/Religion Buffs.......2003-01-04

Grodzins has written an astonishingly thorough and readable biography of an important but neglected 19th Century American. Parker is one of the most influential Americans of the mid-1800s, a brilliant scholar and powerful preacher who became a crucial figure in our religious and political history.

The book is destined to become the standard biography of Parker for generations. Anyone interested in American political thought and the evolution of American religious doctrine will find this book invaluable. Any New Englander will find this a treasure trove of well-written stories.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Quiet Book with a Loud Message.......2001-02-05

After I heard Caroline Marwitz speak on Wyoming Public Radio about her book, Naming the Winds, I had to buy a copy. You see, so many talented writers such as Gretel Erlich visit Wyoming, and are so taken and inspired by its stark, demanding beauty, that they end up staying a while and writing their best work as a result. And for this, all of us sensitive readers in Wyoming are very, very grateful. No surprise to me that Wyoming has this effect on people, as I have lived here nearly all my life.

However, with this latest quiet ode to Wyoming--and I fear that it will remain all too quiet without people far more influential than I shouting its virtues from the mountaintops--a Wyoming writer, someone raised here through her youth and early adulthood, has captured the true full naturalist's experience of this state.

Marwitz interweaves the narrative of a talentedly sensitive girl's apprenticeship on "The Prairie", as she calls it, with the fascinating story of her relationship with a mentor in the form of a much older woman willing to share her amazing background and a subsequently thrilling outlook on life. Though nonfiction, this book has a clear storyline, with direction, plot, climax, and a wonderful conclusion. That said, I would do a serious disservice to Naming the Winds if I didn't say that the strength of this book is the honest, non-high-fallootin', lyrical poetry used to describe the natural environment of the high plains. No other word but 'poetry' fits for many of the chapters of this great work.

The author's bio says that Marwitz is working on a second nonfiction work, as well as finishing a novel, Chameleon Man. I just wanted to say that she has at least one devoted reader and fan for all her future work in Thermopolis--one who is spreading the word every chance I get.

Plainly put: Anyone who thrives on naturalist works by western writers such as the late Edward Abbey, William Kittredge, and Terry Tempest Williams, will enjoy discovering this newest talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars A spiritual look at nature, the wind, and wild lands.......2000-12-01

Naming the Winds is a small gem of a book that will be recommended by word of mouth, from one friend to another. It is organized by the seasons (mid-summer, late autumn, winter, deep winter, etc.) and by the winds that the author named as a child (Thunder Hoof wind, Silk Wind, Grass Comb Wind, etc.) Like many of us who grew up before computers and the internet, she roamed the wild, left-alone land behind her family's house in Laramie, Wyoming, and came to know the flowers, sagebrush, prairie dogs, and yucca as friends. Though I don't live in Wyoming, where it is set, I can identify with the author's sadness when the land she grew up on is bulldozed for streets and houses. She tells stories about an elderly woman who befriended her, who also loved to roam the land, and the "apprenticeship" she had with the elderly woman as she learned about the plants and flowers and skies of southern Wyoming. It's a quick read, but you'll want to take your time, as the author is a poet with images and colors. It'll make you want to go back to where you grew up and see if your favorite wild places are still there. I would recommend men buy this book for their wives, and women buy it for their mothers. I certainly am.
