Following Ho Chi Minh: The Memoirs of a North Vietnamese Co.......2004-02-24

This has been an amazing read for me. My fellow helicopter pilot buddy (from our tour in Vietnam) sent it over from Vermont. We were both New England college grads when we flew
D-model Hueys out of Vinh Long, in the Mekong Delta during 1966-67. Since that time, we have devoured many books commenting on our mutual Army experience, especially when the Vietnamese side of things often illustrates our time well. Fred Stetson continues to remain close to Vietnamese immigrants in the Burlington, VT area, and knows I have represented our experience well in my book, OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM. We both delight in finding out information from and about the Hanoi leadership, and were absolutely surprised to find their intrigue with the Chinese communists that is so fervently exposed in Bui Tin's masterful work. He was always in the significant place at the right time, and reveals behind-the-scenes politics with the North Vietnamese from 1945 on. What a journalist, and I am glad he has connected with leaders like Senator John McCain, to flesh out the reality of the VC and NVA we were fighting against. Apparently our suspicions that the Chinese were very involved in this war were very correct, indeed! I had thought the two nation-states too opposed to each other (culturally) to have ever played such a strong hand. Makes you wonder what we could have done militarily otherwise; maybe ole chicken LBJ might have been right to worry about escalating events after all....

Worth Reading If Youre a Serious STudent of the War.......2002-12-04

As a former Marine Sniper who served two tours in Nam and who is still trying to understand what I went through this is an okay read. Not as good as some and a bit over blown at times but worth understanding the other side. It does make you want to better understand the other side of our current crisis in terrorism and see what makes them tick. Our leaders in Nam were a little lazy and self serving when it came to history. That is the leaders in Washington. Makes you wonder what might have been?

An insider's revelations........2002-01-20

As a North Vietnamese colonel and high ranking Party member, the author accepted the surrender of Saigon on April 1975. He continued to work for Hanoi until 1990, when disillusioned with the communists he moved to Paris and hoped to see a free and democratic Vietnam.

In his memoir, he talked about communism being elevated to the rank of a "blind faith", the purges within the Party, the errors, greed, and corruption of communist leaders, the "arrogance of the Party" and so on.

This book is recommended to those who are interested in the inner world of the Vietnamese communist Party and the causes of its failure. It is not the ideal world painted by the communists, not the people's rule but the rule of five or six men who imposed their dictatorship on the people.

A must have for any paul Keating fan. It reveals a complex character, and a driven personality, who possessed a quiet touch of flair and style. While the Carew bio preceeded this one, Gorton's bio provides a great introduction into the Keating persona, and is probably the "got to" book on this subject at present.

GREAT BOOK!.......2000-04-24

I first picked up this book and decided to read it by judging it's cover. I saw a picture of Paris, and since I liked European travel, I decided to check it out. It's a great story with believable characters, and you can actually feel what the main character is feeling. You get great descriptions, along with suprises along the way, and you actually feel like you are along on the trip with Berkely. It's filled with drama , action, and romance, and overall is an excellent book. (I've read it like, 18 times, and never get tired!)

Tumultuous Fiction.......2005-02-03

I was assigned this book to read in a class called "Studies in 20th Century Literature." The theme of the course focused on short-story collections written in the last century. At first, I was skeptical of this book, as I am of a lot of modern fiction. We had to read it alongside "Dubliners" and "Winesburg, Ohio", and before beginning to read this book, I wondered how it would stand up to these classics; and when I finished all of them, I came to the conclusion that "A Relative Stranger" is a modern classic. "Winesburg, Ohio" didn't seem real to me, by the way (that's another topic for another arena).

The stories in this collection are masterfully crafted and imaginative. The only story that I thought didn't fit (unless I missed something) was "The Old Fascist in Retirement." I won't go into why. Being from Michigan, I enjoyed the allusions and references to the state and to the city of Detroit and surrounding communities laced throughout the stories. In "Westland", he is on target, describing that city's denizens and their foibles with accuracy. "The Disappeared" is amazing; the reader can really feel the ennui and isolation of the characters. Although the story might seem at first improbable, thinking more about the story led me to conclude that the characters' actions are believable. I think we'd all feel and act the same if we were those characters. I won't go into the other stories here, but in conclusion, I have to say that Mr. Baxter definitely has his craft down. I look forward to reading his other works and seeing what happens to my own writing after assimilating his influence.

Alienation in the Upper Midwest.......2003-11-28

This is a wonderful book of stories. Fenstad skates on his way home from church because he is happy. Harry Fenstad writes brochures for a computer company. He teaches an extension course on composition. His hopefulness and didacticism has been picked up from his mother. Fenstad invites his mother to attend the class. Harry likes skating in the dark with a pharmicist friend, Susan, and he likes having his mother in the back of the writing class. His mother appears at the skating rink and things change, her frailty is exposed.

Detroit has four shopping centers at its cardinal points. The state of Michigan is like Holland. In another story a long lost brother finds a man whose monstrous behavior has just driven his wife and baby out of his house. He hits the brother in a bar following a baseball game. His hobby is building ships in bottles. It turns out that the men have nothing in common but they continue to see each other.

One of the characters, Cooper, decides that he must do something for the street people. Bringing someone home he offends his wife who works as a prosecutor. When he is hit up for money on the street by an old man his young son is offended. The little boy starts to hide his money from his father. A woman of the street misunderstands his interest and believes that he seeks a romantic encounter. He is told to do sweeping at the shelter to overcome his sense of guilt. The collection includes the silence of an Ezra Pound-like poet.

A star rising from the midwest.......2001-04-15

Many of these brilliant, thoughtful stories are about people at unexpected moments of boiling over. Something is wrong in these characters' lives--a minister anchored in security who desperately needs his own sermon on fear; an adult ed. teacher questioning what he believes and teaches--their emotional well-being, as a whole, may not be in peril, but something is. And Baxter has the grace and patience to take us about as far as one could go into small yet poignant circumstances of recognizable characters. Baxter's prose is lilting yet potent: "He was ball-and-chained to his emotions. On some days the obsession weighed him down so heavily that he could not get out of bed to go to work without groaning and reaching for his hair, as if to drag himself up bodily for the working day." This passage from "Saul and Patsy are Pregnant" illustrates Baxter's gift for confusing the comic and tragic--should these be opposites, one thinks--after reading this stunning collection.

Comtemporary Topics for Comtemporary People.......2000-12-02

The author provides an excellent portrayal of ordinary people faced with frequently occurring dilemmas of comtemporary living. Each story is succinct and well-written. The author conveys a sympathetic tone to these often lonely people. I found the writting style subtle and open to interpretation but not distracting. I would recommend the book to those of a more literary nature.

Well worth discovering.......2000-01-20

My favorite story in this solid collection is "The Disappeared" -- a Swedish engineer comes to Detroit on business and tries to make sense of the world he finds himself in. It's one of the best stories I've read this decade, and a number of others in this collection rival it as well. (I liked this collection more than "Believers" and "Harmony of the World" -- but his essay collection Burning Down the House is great, too.) Baxter's not a flashy writer, but he's never simple -- more Edward Hopper than Norman Rockwell. Sample one story and you'll probably find the collection worth buying. These stories should last.

This book is a truly enjoyable, gripping, emotional roller coaster. I wanted to know more about each character and did not want the story to end. The interweaving of the past and present was magnificent. J.R. Cahn should definately satisfy our curiosity by writing another book that continues the story.

Interesting Literary Quickie.......2003-12-05

"Relative Stranger" is a short easy read, great for curling up on a cold winter afternoon, with a cup of steaming something. It provides a compelling glimpse into the mind and life of an eccentric, elderly relative, who is ill and near the end of his life. It reminds us that the people that we think we know well, may have layers of mystery and depth that we never knew.

It also shows how one suburban woman deals with being in the "sandwich generation," caught up with mutiple demands of a family, a home, a job, while taking care of both the youger generation, her children, and the older generation, elderly relatives. It is threfore easy to identify with the main character, Rachel, as she juggles taking care of everyone else, and trying not to lose herself in the process.

It also provieds a neat histroical, unexpected twist. The surprise ending makes it that much more of a good read.
