      Book Description

"Rao's account has a more Indian focus. His book enhances our understanding of the important role of human resource development (HRD) in order to optimise our outputs at every stage through an organised system of management training at the individual, organisational and national level. . . . The scope of the book is vast and varied. . . . [A] well documented account." --Business World "One cannot but applaud Prof. Rao's work. If you are looking for a book which addresses recruitment, renumeration and retention practices, this is not the book for you. This book gives a very broad definition of HRD: "Creating conditions that enable people to get the best out of themselves and their lives". And therein lies a tale, which Prof Rao tells with authority and conviction.... This book reaches out primarily to management scholars, policy-makers and development professionals. For this audience, the book is a must-read. And it would also be unwise to dismiss the work as having no relevance to a practicing professional.... The book is unusual and innovative because it takes a giant leap from the traditional corporate scope of HRD to a wide international canvas.... This book in terms of concepts, scope, relevance and research is like champagne." --Business Line Human resource development (HRD) is crucial for the progress of a nation and for alleviating poverty. Countries that have developed their people by investing in education, health, and science and technology have achieved considerable success, therefore, governments must accord the highest priority to this area. Based on this premise, Human Resources Development examines the experiences of both developing and developed nations. Author T. V. Rao identifies critical areas and important target groups for HRD interventions and discusses a variety of approaches for developing human resources at the national level. He highlights the interdependent and interrelated nature of HRD variables, strategies, and processes and argues for an integrated and coordinated approach, while also exploring evidence linking HRD variables with economic development variables. Researchers and scholars in human resources development, personnel management, management studies, development studies, and policy studies will appreciate this book's grounded approach.

Meyers captures what it's like to be a farmkid--to have a haybarn as your playground and to work side by side with your parents in a way today's kids will never know. (I especially love his reference to the sound that your boots make as you pull them out of the barnyard muck.) He captures a farm family's heartaches and proud moments in simple, true style. I gave this book to my father, a Minnesota farmer, because it spoke volumes about what my parents instilled in me by raising me on a farm and the struggles we faced to make ends meet. He loved it! It's not a book for just former farm kids though. Beautifully written. One of my top ten books.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-03-23

This book reminds me so much of my life growing up in a small town in South Dakota, i didn't live on a farm but worked on one and still work on one during the summers. I thouroghly enjoyed Kent's abliltity to describe certain events, sights and the other 4 sense's. A very good book i sat down and read it in a day no more than 12 hours total reading, it sucked me right in.

4 out of 5 stars Fiction flowing from life.......2005-10-07

I have not lived on a farm, rather I am a fan of Kent Meyers' writing and have read all of his other books. I was interested to read this memoir of his life and struggles on his family farm growing up. Threads of his experiences were familiar to me because they have flowed into his stories and have enriched them.

The section of the book "Straightening the Hammermill" is one every father and son should read. What a powerful statement about the strength and ties of family and community and the knowledge passed between fathers and sons.

The world gained a writer but a family farm was lost. Meyers honored that passing.

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional First-Hand Account of Farm Life.......2005-06-26

Anyone wishing to really know what farming was and is about should read this book. Great little stories, wonderful memories to those of us who grew up on a farm, and tear-jerking memories of farm sales. We had three children instead of nine, but many experiences were the same.

5 out of 5 stars Kent could be my brother.......2001-11-10

A friend of mine recommended this book. I grew up on a farm in central Nebraska. When I finished reading this book, I called my mom and asked her if I had a brother named Kent that she never told me about. I started reading her excerpts from the book and we were both astounded by how closely it matched our own lives on the farm in Nebraska, including the blue-speckled canning pot and pressure cooker sitting on the stove all summer! I found particular delight in the essay on the work of "town kids" vs. "farm kids." I look back at all we did, but it never seemed like work. It was just our life, one I wouldn't trade for anything. Like the author, I've been through my father's death, the sale of the farm, and in the next few weeks my mother will be moving off the farm and into town. Loved this book!

Measurements of the composition of various bodies and particles in the solar system and the galaxy give us a remarkably accurate understanding of how the galaxy or the solar system formed. This workshop joined the various communities concerned with the composition of the Sun and its surroundings. It united workers from two very active space missions, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). It was not limited to scientists analyzing and interpreting data gathered with instruments on these two spacecraft, but was open to the wider community. Topics include: solar and solar system abundances; coronal and solar wind composition; energetic particle composition; galactic composition; fractionation, acceleration, and transport processes; as well as applications and constraints on cosmochemistry.

"Men in Skirts" was well written and an eye opener to the realities of war. It tells of the men who gave their lives in the Korean War, a useless war, so much like the Vietnam War...the forgotten wars. The memories of that war must still be vivid in the authors mind today.

4 out of 5 stars he's no james herriot but...........2003-01-28

Gutkind presents to us an extremely realistic view of veterinary practices in the present day, documentary style. While his stories do not possess the same inspiring charm and warmth of the beloved author James Herriot, he gives us an interesting presentation of veterinary medicine. I have to admit that while James Herriot has inspired the pursuit of veterinary medicine, Gutkind forces one to re-think whether that is the career choice that you're looking for. He provides us with a this-is-how-it-is attitude that does not lace the profession with perfect-world ideals but instead allows us insight into veterinarians who have conflicted opinions (even regrets) on their career choices.

My greatest respect still remains with James Herriot, who intensely portrayed the image of a man who truly and absolutely loved his profession, no strings attached- one of the rare, ideal veterinary practitioners the world has yet known. However, I also respect Gutkind for his portrayal of veterinary medicine as well. His book is a realistic in-your-face reminder that you must, must properly consider all your options before committing to a career choice, because what you pursue may not be what you expected it to be.

2 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject, not well presented........1999-08-09

This book is not very well written. It's unfortunate that the author finds himself in such exciting situations (a tuskectomy!) and then is unable to clearly communicate with the reader. The scope of the book is limited (a few veterinary situations, all within a convenient commute for the author) and to me (a pre-vet student) the writing is boring, stiff, and uninspiring. For those who may never get to see real-life veterinary trauma I wish there had been more than a dry book report about the procedures. Stick to James Herriot - you'll be much happier.

3 out of 5 stars A somewhat disappointing view of veterinary life.......1999-01-18

While the author has it right when referring to veterinary medicine as an "unspoken art," the book lacks in serious impact....the first few chapters are devoted to veterinarians whose clients are wealthy New Yorkers. A turnoff for me, and worlds away from many of the "frontline" vets that I know. I appreciate his respect and admiration of the profession, but think the book could have contained more substance and stories.

5 out of 5 stars A good look at contemporary veterinary life in the 90's........1997-12-07

This is a very interesting look at everyday veterinary life for people interested in medicine and animals. Gutkind has interesting thoughts on the comparison of human doctors to animal doctors. The book lacked the "wow" impact on the reader and that is why it is not rated "10." Since the book is written about east coast veterinarians and facilities, it would probably appeal more to easterners than us folks in the west. Overall, it is very good reading for anyone curious about veterinarians and young people wanting to go into this field.

Ol' Strom is a workmanlike, largely anecdotal biography of the oldest--and longest-serving--United States senator in American history. Jack Bass and Marilyn W. Thompson provide a political education to younger readers who only know Thurmond as the congressional landmark who, too proud to wear a hearing aid, urges witnesses in Senate hearings to "speak into the machine." Among the book's highlights are an account of Thurmond's 1948 presidential campaign, in which he carried four states and established the vitalness of the South for future aspirants to the White House (as well as firmly setting down a political platform of racial divisiveness that would set the tone for the civil rights era a decade later), and his successful 1954 write-in campaign for the Senate seat he's held ever since. There's also plenty of detail concerning Thurmond's legendary sexual appetite: he was so notorious in Washington that Lyndon Johnson forbade his daughter to go out with him. (She was in high school; he just a few years shy of 60.) Another Senate colleague got off perhaps the best one-liner summing up the Thurmond mystique: "When he dies, they'll have to beat his pecker down with a baseball bat in order to close the coffin lid." Reading Ol' Strom, you won't doubt that assessment for a single second. --Ron Hogan

4 out of 5 stars Truth was even worse than his public imagery.......2004-01-01

Myself and other progressive young southerners who were previously appalled by his well-known Segregationist tactics could not have even imagined Strom Thurmond himself fathering an interracial child, only to gleefully keep his family and other in racial subordination supposedly for their and/or country's own good.

Sure, I was previously aware of slave-owner-slave stories which basically told the same tale in eighteenth century language, but I did not believe somebody intentionally kept their family in segregation today. There has been much discussion about conscience, character, and morals within the public sector and what quantities of these ingredients are required of 'good' public servants versus those that simply keep getting re-elected for tradition sakes---but Thurmond's life (long overdue for an examination) lacks all three components.

After former South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond's death, a woman Essie Mae Washington came forward with revelation that she was Thurmond's half-daughter. Her mother was a teenage African American worker in the Thurmond home, and he was a wealthy young adult whose activities were apparently concealed for fear of dominant society retaliation. If word of Thurmond's 'extracurricular' activities had leaked out while he was living, (especially in the segregation era) it would have been the end of his political career.

I don't doubt that the incident (and others) in question happened, or Strom's legendary libido (ironically while courting voters from 'family values' crowd who made a national crisis out of President William Jefferson Clinton's consensual affair with a twenty something adult woman). Apparently because Ol'Strom forces himself on women far less powerful than himself, this is not only appropriate conduct but an expected public service perk that he was not in a hury to give up. Throughout his 'distinguished' life, Thurmond regarded women as objects for his convenience and entertainment, unable to consider us full and three-dimensional people.

I am not shocked by the lurid details contained within this volume, but I sincerely hope conservatives and/or Republicans understand what allegations are in here before continuing to pretend only one political party houses ravenous libidos. Letting neither his switch to the Republican party or increasing age stop him, Strom remained the consummate womanizer, quickly falling out of step with an era that (at least in public relations) saw the importance of treating women as professional equals.

Thurmond's death was one of the 2003 newstories, but it is ultimately telling of his supreme inhumanity that none of the Sunday talk shows devoted significant time to memorializing his influence on the nation. Good riddance!!

            4 out of 5 stars OL' SEG.......2003-04-09

Strom Thurmond is widely viewed as a simple racist with just one cause- to fight against civil rights. However, OL STROM helps to explain that while Strom was historically on the wrong side during the civil rights battles, he was and still is a man of character and integrity.

Like him or not,OL STROM makes a strong case to support Strom as "the century's most enduring American political figure". Strom Thurmond was on the cutting edge of the white souths move from the Democratic party to the Republican party with his 1948 presidental bid. He still holds the filibuster record and well being in the Senate for longer than any one in history.

Unlike some of of the hardcore racists, Strom reached out to African-Americans in his later years. At the same time, Strom never "admitted" his earlier positions on civil rights were wrong. Strom still clung to his "States Rights" view which seem to open the only hole in his intergrity. Only Strom knows what's in his heart.

OL STROM also gets into more details, regarding his personal affairs, such as his biracial daughter, that others bio have glossed over.

Strom is not so much "a" southern politian, as he IS the south!

5 out of 5 stars You may not like him BUT.......2001-12-05

Insightful, provacative...You may not like Strom, but this book
will make you view him in a different light. This book doesn't take sides. It does give you a view of someone many have thought of as a not very bright, but who has outlived or outsmarted most of his critics. A very good view of politics in South Carolina. Mr. Thurmond won my grudging respect in this book by taking care of his constituents...without regards to race or religion. Well documented facts by the writers!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining work by a SC expert.......2001-10-05

I once had the pleasure of sharing a flight with the author Jack Bass. The man is a walking encyclopedia of anecdotes of South Carolina history and political lore and he was quite entertaining. Reading his take on Thurmond, who he knew well, is similar to an actual conversation with Bass. Put it to you this way, reading this book is like listening to some old-timers reminisce around the cracker barrel in front of the general store. Not a scholarly work, but an enjoyable one. BTW, I wish he would have gone into detail about Thurmond''s meeting with Coretta Scott King. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear what the former supreme segregationist had to say to the widow of Dr. King.

In Ol' Strom, Bass and Thompson tell the whole story of Senator J. Strom Thurmond's remarkable march across 20th century politics. But they don't do anything else. While it is interesting just to read about a politician so long-lasting that he ran for president in 1948 and still holds office today, the book does not attempt to delve into the meaning of Thurmond's extraordinary tenure. Thurmond's political career is a mirror of the evolution of the South from Dixiecrat to Republican, from racist to mainstream conservative. The authors opted not to tell this story, however, and stubbornly insisted on offering just a journalistic account of Thurmond's life.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, culturally-rich biography from the Old West.......1999-11-05

I really enjoyed reading James Wells of Montana, an excellent, first-hand look at early American history. This true tale also provides many interesting facts of the native-American Gros Ventre culture -- very educational and my favorite aspect of the book. As you read, you become enveloped in the life of James Wells, and feel his and his family's struggles and joys. There are even some humorous anecdotes that round out the story. If you like learning about other cultures, history, or the Old West, or just enjoy accounts on the life of a family, then this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars An easy, enjoyable look at the life of Pioneer James Wells.......1999-01-02

I'm glad I ignored the Kurkis Review or I would never have experienced the enjoyable true story of the life of an American pioneer; James Wells of Montana. This book is a great read for those who want a snapshot of life in the early west without wading though the details that could bough down the telling of the story. Of course a book with only 256 pages will miss some details or information especially since it spans such a long period. However, recognizing that, the author entertains us with some dialog that brings the story to life and made it quite enjoyable. Wells and his adventures, which were true (including marrying the princess of a Gros Ventre tribe), fascinated me. As his life unfolded, I had the same impressions that I enjoyed in "Dance with the Wolves" and "Jeremiah Johnson". It's unbelievable what our forefathers did to pave the way for us in the 20th Century. You don't need me to quote the story line or talk about the people and places. The best I can do is say that as a reader of almost any type of book including, autobiographies, science fiction, mysteries, adventure, and fiction, this book goes on my recommendation list. Just read and enjoy the short narrative about one person's true story and the world around him in the early west. There's even a gunfight for those that loved "Gunsmoke". After reading this story, I'm looking forward to reading James Frank's next book "Mary Wells".

The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Oregon is internationally known to ornithologists and birders. Throughout the year, but especially during spring and autumn migrations, hundreds of thousands of birds can be seen on the refuge. Birds of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon provides the first exhaustive report on the 312 species recorded here over the last 110 years.

                  For each species you'll learn
                  * How common it is on the refuge
                  * Where it is likely to be found on the refuge
                  * Dates of its earliest, latest, and most frequent sightings on the refuge

C.D. Littlefield is a legendary figure to western birders and an internationally recognized expert on the birds of Malheur, particularly the Sandhill Crane.

                    Book Description

Water and land interrelate in surprising and ambiguous ways, and riparian zones, where land and water meet, have effects far outside their boundaries. Using the Malheur Basin in southeastern Oregon as a case study, this intriguing and nuanced book explores the ways people have envisioned boundaries between water and land, the ways they have altered these places, and the often unintended results.

The Malheur Basin, once home to the largest cattle empires in the world, experienced unintended widespread environmental degradation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After the establishment in 1908 of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge as a protected breeding ground for migratory birds, and its expansion in the 1930s and 1940s, the area experienced equally extreme, intentional modifications aimed at restoring riparian habitat. Refuge managers ditched wetlands, channelized rivers, applied Agent Orange and rotenone to waterways, killed beaver, and cut down willows. Where Land and Water Meet examines the reasoning behind and effects of these interventions, gleaning lessons from their successes and failures.

Although remote and specific, the Malheur Basin has myriad ecological and political connections to much larger places. This detailed look at one tangled history of riparian restoration shows how--through appreciation of the complexity of environmental and social influences on land use, and through effective handling of conflict--people can learn to practice a style of pragmatic adaptive resource management that avoids rigid adherence to single agendas and fosters improved relationships with the land.

From the supplier: The first published nesting record of the Great-tailed Grackle, Quiscalus mexicanus, breeding in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon is described. Nests were located at the tops of Russian olives and consisted of cups constructed of Hardstem bulrush lined with sedges and grasses. Majority of recorded individuals were adult males, which performed distractive displays when nestlings were present. Other areas where nestings were found are Nevada, Northern California and Utah.
