4 out of 5 stars Dreaming in Koganecho.......2004-06-22

Who would think that a book about sheep would be interesting? Paula's simple but direct writing style is as stunning as a Charles Bukowski take on drinking in dives in the dirtiest parts of town. UI've never read an animal husbandry book better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Another Garden Way Classic.......2004-02-08

Like the title states this is another standard cranked out by the folks at GardenWay publishing, now don't get me wrong their information has been the staple for many a years and is still very useful today but this publishing house is not exactly known for their updating. Paula Simmons is a figurehead in her field and has some truely great advice and experience to give so listen to it folks even though it may be as old as your sheep's great grandsire. Defineltly a book anyone new to the livestock industry should have around for constant checking and even the occasional read through, I am a firm believer in information and research and so believe that even dated material is important. So if you are truely interested, buy this one for reference and keep building your library, do your own research develop a foundation of knowledge and no matter what your flock encounters you can overcome it and you can look happily out at your beautiful lambs one day and say with pride " I did it ".

3 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying this book.......2001-07-25

It's a good book but it has been revised and updated under the title "Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep." I didn't know this - bought the Storey's Guide, but sheep breeders kept recommending this one. So I bought it too, and then learned that it's simply the previous version of the Storey's Guide. So buy the newer one.

3 out of 5 stars Sheep Farming is not for Me.......2000-11-20

If you've ever thought to yourself, "Maybe I should quit the rat race and become a sheep farmer", this is the book to bring you back to your senses. After 15 minutes with this book I realized I was not cut out to raise livestock. Raising sheep is difficult work, and the sheep are, by and large, nasty little creatures. Check out the chapters on sheep parasites! Or how to deal with difficult lambings.

The book is highly detailed and vividly illustrated, so if you are going to raise sheep, it probably is pretty helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Rasing Sheep The Modern Way.......2000-07-10

This is some serious book, no wasted pages here. From chapter 1 to the end is a steady flow of information. The Pictures are clear and plenty. This book is an excellent book.

                  Book Description

The topics covered in this book include: Theory of Scattering and Scintillation, Distribution of Scattering Material, Intra-day Variability, Pulsars and their Magnetospheric Structure, Polarization of AGN, Interplanetary Scintillation, and Future Highly-Sensitive Radio Telescopes. The introductory papers emphasize the essential properties of diffractive and refractive scattering, how they differ in temporal and frequency structure, and what they reveal about irregularities in the ISM. Pulsars can be examined in a number of different ways as a function of frequency: time variability (both short and long term), DM changes, pulse broadening, angular extent, and Faraday rotation. Intra-day variable sources (IDVs) are another major topic of the book. Although many variable sources clearly exhibit intrinsic changes, IDVs are generally believed to result from scintillation effects. They require source sizes on the ten micro-arcsec scale, the most extreme cases having profound implications for source lifetimes and emission mechanisms. Finally, a dozen contributions describe future large radio telescope projects, especially the Chinese FAST effort to build a 500 m spherical reflector of innovative design.

                    Book Description

Noble Gas Geochemistry gives a comprehensive description of the physical chemistry and cosmochemistry of noble gases, before leading on to applications for problem-solving in the earth and planetary sciences. There have been many developments in the use of the noble gases since publication of the first edition of this book in 1983. This second edition has been fully revised and updated. The book will be invaluable to graduate students and researchers in the earth and planetary sciences who use noble gas geochemistry techniques.

This digital document is a journal article from Analytica Chimica Acta, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

                      Description:
An empirical calibration with a natural mineral standard (fluorapatite from Cerro de Mercado, Mexico) is proposed as a method to determine the ^4He concentration of mineral and rock samples. The procedure is based on the fusion of several aliquots of the fluorapatite standard with a well-spaced weight distribution in order to obtain a good correlation in coordinates of ^4He peak height versus fluorapatite weight. The weight is then converted to moles using the accepted mineral age (31.4Ma) and appropriate formula. Experimental peak height of ^4He for the unknown samples are converted to moles with the regression determined for fluorapatite. The procedure is fast and inexpensive, and both precision and accuracy are always below 10% and usually about 3-5%.

                          Book Description

This is a revised and extended version of the popular first edition. Inspired by the work of Thom and Arnold on singularity theory, such topics as umbilics, ridges and subparabolic lines, all robust features of a smooth surface, which are rarely treated in elementary courses on differential geometry, are considered here in detail. These features are of immediate relevance in modern areas of application such as interpretation of range data from curved surfaces and the processing of magnetic resonance and cat-scan images. The author has included many exercises and examples to illustrate the results proved.

                                Book Description

This is the first comprehensive biography of Fulk Nerra, an important medieval ruler, who came to power in his teens and rose to be master in the west of the French Kingdom. Descendant of warriors and administrators who served the French kings, Fulk in turn built the state that provided a foundation for the vast Angevin empire later constructed by his descendants.
Bernard Bachrach finds the terms "constructed" and "built" more than metaphorical in relation to Fulk's career. He shows how Fulk and the Angevin counts who followed him based their long-term state building policy on Roman strategies and fortifications described by Vegetius. This creative adaptation of Roman ideas and tactics, according to Bachrach, was the key to Fulk's successful consolidation of political power. Students of medieval and military history will find here a colorful, impressively researched biography.

The conquest of England by William of Normandy changed the island's political nature for all and good, but his dynasty didn't last very long. The Angevins, beginning with Henry II, had an almost equally great impact and their control continued more or less strongly for several centuries. In the earlier period, a century before the Conquest, the counts of Anjou were every bit the equals of the dukes of Normandy, eventually establishing an empire that stretched from Scotland to the Pyrenees, and which encompassed both England and Aquitaine in addition to Anjou itself. The story really begins with Fulk Nerra, who built the Angevin state, both physically and politically, and laid the essential groundwork for Henry's later conquests. Of course, Fulk's efforts were based on those of his own predecessors, back into the early 9th century, and Bachrach spends a fair amount of time discussing this ancestral power and its roots in the old Roman civitates. Bachrach is perhaps the leading present authority on the Angevins and his theories are worth paying attention to. There's also an excellent, lengthy bibliography.

                                  Book Description

Noah Gordon, youngest son of Scottish Earl Hugh Gordon, immigrated to America in the 1800’s seeking a new life. He found romance, adventure, and hardship, and his strength of character steered the course for his family through the decades. That spirit led great-granddaughter Thelma and her husband, H.E. Wyatt to leave Arkansas for Nebraska during the 1930’s Depression. With five children to feed and clothe, H.E. worked at corn shucking and odd jobs for the farmers around Lisco, Nebraska; anything he could get to make a dollar. F.D.R’s election and subsequent programs for the poor lifted them from poverty, and life improved.

The older girls grew up and moved to California, finally enticing their parents to follow. With H.E.’s well-paying job, the Wyatts purchased their first home. Life flowed along after the Second World War ended, and Norma and Faye moved back to Nebraska with their husbands and children.

The 1949 blizzard hit the state shortly after the family’s return. The massive storm hammered the ranching community, where 1000’s of livestock died. Rural residents were stranded in their homes, and the Army moved in to open roads and restore power. Part 2 consists of letters from James, the Wyatt’s only son. He journalized his Korean War experiences daily. After months of heavy combat he was discharged without a scratch, and nothing prepared the family for his death from leukemia several years later.

The epilogue sums up the family history, and the dream the prefaced Thelma’s death at 95.

5 out of 5 stars A man for the times? The experience of defeat.......2003-05-05

This is one of the most useful and interesting of the Marx biographies and shows us another Marx, behind the man of fiction who was a later invention. Christopher Hill in _The Experience of Defeat_ details a host of figures in the English Civil War, from the Levellers to the Fifth Monarchists, who were written out of history, and who had to live with failed revolutionary lifetimes. We forget the actual experience of Marx, the experience of defeat after 1848, and his persistence nonetheless without illusions documenting the capitalism of his time and era. After the grotesquerie of the twentieth century Communists it is significant to remember this other Marx.
This is surely the experience of the current left, and one might expect it to end as forgotten as the defeated figures from Munzer onward--save that the right will not rest, and will reinvent slavery or worse if left to their devices, while the current left fantasies a series of leftist fictions, among them about Marx.
It might help to look at the failure of Marxist theory, the experience of defeat, behind the unique brilliance of Marx, and at least know the history, starting with Marx's challenge to Hegel's philosophy of right. This work shows the problems that Marx experienced in his theoretical struggles, and shows, for example, the inability of Marx to complete his life's project, Capital. This aspect of the book is compelling, and often quietly filtered out. Marxists have rarely known what they are talking about, but, like the Levellers, will always accompany the definition of modernism.
                                  Very acute biography.

This fascinating memoir by a gay British priest begins in London in 1929, when Bernard Mayes emerged from his heavily sedated mother, and, according to the practice of the day, was sequestered by doctors for a month, returning to her sickly and fretful. By turns political, confessional, and spiritual, Mayes's tale is entertaining and well written. Coming of age during the rise of Nazism in Europe, he began having affairs with boyhood chums, then moved on to seminary where the "pad, pad, pad of feet and the rustle of cassocks down the ever-creaking corridors during the night was not always evidence of devoted meditations." A gay priest in a culture where love "is damnably suppressed, denied, and hidden ... to please intellectual tyrants claiming to speak for God," Mayes eventually helped found a small congregation of like-minded gay and lesbian Christians in the Castro district of San Francisco, in the years just before the outbreak of AIDS.

All the elements of a blockbuster movie are here--sex, oppression, and the Sturm und Drang of romance--set against a wider historical backdrop. Mayes's introspective retelling of his journey--from his staid Anglican roots, to a tour of the American South at the height of the civil rights movement, and finally to the gay mecca of San Francisco--should resonate with anyone who appreciates the ways in which history is both made and reflected in our private lives.--Jack Connolly

                                      Book Description

He survived a turbulent childhood in war-torn London, earned degrees with honors from Cambridge University, was ordained in the Church of England, became an Anglican worker-priest, and emigrated to the United States.

He has been a prolific broadcaster for the BBC, helped organize the Public Broadcasting System in America, was a founding chairman of National Public Radio, and became a senior management consultant for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

He designed and directed the first system of suicide and crisis counseling centers in California (a model for later centers nationwide) and helped found the Parsonage, an Episcopalian ministry on behalf of gay rights in the Castro section of San Francisco. And all the while, Bernard Duncan Mayes struggled to reconcile his views on sexuality--and his experience as a gay man--with his theological and cultural beliefs.

In an entirely honest and engaging voice, Mayes offers considerably more than autobiographical recollections of his life as priest, journalist, university teacher and administrator, and gay rights activist. Throughout Escaping God's Closet, Bernard Mayes recounts how social and doctrinal oppression posed fundamental challenges to his own belief system, but led him to revelations about sexuality, Christianity, and the nature of human existence itself.

Winner of the 2002 Lambda Literary Spirituality Award

Bernard Mayes is a visionary. Escaping God's Closet is a book of startling scale, as it is more than an autobiography. It's a thesis on what existence means, with Mayes's life presented as the evidence. Everything is connected, we are all mutually interdependent...and we must all escape "God's closet" in order to form the ties that bind and ultimately help us to survive.
