If you need to know what GAAP is, then buy this book........2003-03-13

This book is really the best place to find out what GAAP is today. It's perfect for CFO's, Controllers, Accountants and students of accounting. It provides a lot of excellent examples to help you understand how to apply GAAP within your own company. Everyone else may find it a little dry.

This book is a great resource for creating accounting policies for your organization but it won't help you with procedures. There are a lot of other good books for developing procedures and this is not one of them.

It's a great reference text for everything you wanted to know about GAAP, financial statements and accounting. If you need to know what GAAP is, then buy this book.

Like bread to a meal... if you're an accountant!.......2001-11-05

For accountants: You MUST have this book! I'm an accountant and this along with a dictionary of accounting terms are among my most essential books to have on my work shelf! It's a great reference and ALSO a great learning tool for topics that you're not fully knowledgeable in!

For non-accountants: This book migh be a little too technical for your needs! Unless you'll be deeply involved in accounting issues, you might want to look for another more basic book. Nevertheless, you can always make use of this book if you have one!

A Soild Effort!.......2004-10-25

This is a very short book and most of what authors Alan J. Dubinsky and Steven J. Skinner have to say seems like straight, plain common sense. That is so rare in books about human resource management that this seems like a small gem. Most of its content consists of vignettes of high-performing employees who go out of their way to serve customers. But the authors have arranged their material well as they discuss boosting employees who do good work in lower-level management or staff positions. Each chapter covers a trait that motivates top performers and includes succinct tips for managers. The authors also outline, on a matrix, the relationship between performance motivation and managerial initiatives. While you can easily read this book in less than an hour, putting its recommendations into effect will be the work of an organizational lifetime. We believe it will be work well rewarded.

A good overview of historical professional soldiering.......2003-01-31

There are many causes worth fighting for, but some just go without mention thanks to lack of media coverage (Biafra comes to mind). Some mercenaries do not fit the Hollywood mold of a ruthless, senseless warmonger with a thirst for blood and the next big paycheck. Some mercs are angels of mercy, sacrificing themselves for those whom it may not be "politically suitable" for other large nations (read: USA) to aid.

"Mercs" covers some of these individuals with interesting non-fiction short stories. Of particular interest to this reader were the accounts of Count Carl Gustav von Rosen, who led five modified light aircraft armed with small rocket pods on morning raids against the Nigerian Air Force (mostly MiGs), and the stories concerning the history of the French Foreign Legion.

Disappointing collection of condensed stories.......2002-12-18

This book contains short stories on mercenary actions around the globe. Most of them are condensed versions of books on the subject. There is no connection between the chapters and no overview from the editor.
Nice to browse thru, but I recommend the real deal instead:

Tales of real life soldiers of fortune.......2001-01-29

"Mercs" is a series of tiny anecdotes (usually anywhere from 3-10 pages) about various mercenaries throughout history, with a special emphasis on the twentieth century, except for the final section, which is a long long piece on mercenaries sent to start a coup in Ghana. Most of the stories range from lame to fascinating, depending on what happens. My favorite anecdotes were the ones about Sir John de Hawkwood, English condotierre in Renaissance Italy. The anecdotes that didn't hold too much of an interest to me are the ones from the mid-20th century, especially the ones in Vietnam (they just kinda blend together to me). I also thought it might have been a bit better if they included a bit more of the post-Cold War mercenaries. But all in all I would say it's a decent book.

Mercs-- A cut above the rest.......2000-03-13

This is a highly interesting collection of stories. It covers the history of merenaries from the Greeks in Persia to the modern day drug wars. This book has a definite intellectual edge to it, as the writers clearly have a decent education. If you are used to reading military stories written by veterans with little or no education (not to say the stories are not interesting) this is a refreshing, clearly written book. I enjoyed it thouroughly, and learned many things that I found both surprising and entertaining.

Inspirational!.......2003-04-09

I live in Lubbock, Texas, where much of this story takes place, and I happen to know some of the people Dr. Ford mentions. But that was hardly the only reason I wanted to read this compassionate biography. Dr. Ford shows how her brother bravely faced AIDS and the bigotry related to it.

Despite its subject matter, this book is never depressing. Instead, Dr. Ford captures the inspirational aspects of her brother's life and how it touched the lives of people around him. I found her poems about his struggle especially touching and hope she'll share more of those in another book.

In 1794 Dominican friar Sevando Teresa de Mier proposed to a notable crowd in Mexico City that the image of their beloved Virgin of Guadalupe was brought to Mexico by Apostle Thomas. St Thomas's supposed arrival in the New World, though, would have been well before 1531--the date at which the Virgin was generally believed to have appeared before the Indian Juan Diego. Offended and threatened by this revision of such a significant moment in Mexican religious and social history, church authorities defrocked the friar and sentenced him to 10 years in prison in Spain. So began 25 years of political activism, action, adventure, and life on the lam.

Helen Lane translates a large part of Mier's autobiographical writings, most significantly his adventures in Napoleonic Europe between 1800 and 1805, in The Memoirs of the Fray Servando Teresa de Mier. While Mier's political works have secured him a place in the history of Mexican independence, the jailbreaks, capture, and world travel are the compelling components of this man's life. No simpering, suffering, exiled existentialist here; Mier was a man of strategy. Tales of travels take the reader through the countries of Europe, meeting famous and not-so-famous characters at each fork in the road. His opinions are strong (if not always founded in truth), his mood cheerful, and his nature robust. Mier's interpretations of the world as he saw it are often heavily distorted by his own purposes--but such is life on a wing and a prayer.

An extraordinary book. One of Oxford University Press' 'Library of Latin America' series, translated from the Spanish by Helen Lane, here is a tome worthy of high praise. Fray Servando Teresa de Mier y Noriega (Mexico, 1763-1827), persecuted by the Inquisition for thirty years for his challenge to the colonial mentality and his willingness "to play an active role in movements of emancipation," Written in the Inquisitor's prisons, this is a topsy-turvy book where Europeans are the barbarians. Refreshing! De Mier was famed in his own time as a scholar and thinker, &indeed these 240 pages unsheathe a remarkable man, revealing with a novelist's succinct eye the true nature of the world and its passing, and our time in it. Impossible to overstate the beauty and severity of a spirituality in high bloom. Recommended.

On the jihad trail with the Sultan.......2005-06-30

Recently, I saw the 2005 film THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a sword and shield epic centered upon the 1187 recapture of Jerusalem from the Christians by Sultan Yusuf Ibn Najni al-Din Ayyub Ibn Shadlhi Abu'l-Muzaffar Salah al-Din al-Malik al-Nasir, aka "Saladin". The hero of the film was not Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), but rather Balian (Orlando Bloom), who, as the film opens, is sweating over a hot forge as a sword maker in some dump of a rural French town in the early 1180s. Then, along comes Godfrey (Liam Neeson), a knight and minor noble back from Palestine, who reveals himself as Balian's previously unknown father. Godfrey persuades Balian to take up a sword in defense of the Holy Land. On the return trip, Godfrey dies, but not before knighting his son. Balian subsequently inherits his father's castle of Ibelin within the Kingdom of Jerusalem, becomes chummy with King Baldwin IV and his sister Sibylla (Eva Green), finds himself defending the Holy City almost single-handed against Saladin's horde after the Christian army's disastrous defeat at Hitton, and ultimately returns to France, where he ostensibly lives happily ever after with Sibylla, who now holds the title Queen of Jerusalem. Uh-huh. So, I picked up SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM to find out the real story.

Penned in 1898 by Stanley Lane-Poole, this volume is a competent and informative bio of the great Muslim leader, who was respected and praised even by his Crusader foes. Admittedly, the first several chapters dealing with "Saladin's world", and which describe the Muslim politics of the region and the events of the First Crusade prior to Saladin's birth and rise to power, make for educational, but less than riveting, reading. It's only with Saladin's accession as the Sultan of Egypt in 1171 that his life really becomes interesting as he subsequently labors militarily and politically to unite the Muslim Middle East under one rule, i.e. his, drive the Unbelievers into the sea, and topple the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

The book's 19th century roots show even in this 2002 reprint of the original. The occasional map, while certainly not indecipherable, doesn't have the clean look of one of modern construction. More telling, the author infrequently sprinkles the text with passages from original Latin or French sources, which go untranslated. Presumably, the average reader at the turn of the 19th century was more educated and literate than now and could be expected to get along as required in something other than English. This new reprint does, however, include a helpful section of black and white photographs that apparently, because of the presence of automobiles, didn't appear in the first release.

The tone of Lane-Poole's narrative is one of detached and uncritical admiration for his hero, as justifiably it should be, since Saladin demonstrated more chivalry, magnanimity, and honor throughout his career than his chief Crusader opponent from June 8, 1191 to October 9, 1192, King Richard I of England. Indeed, the author, who's otherwise adulatory of the Lionheart's prowess in battle, doesn't shirk from recounting Richard's barbarous order to massacre 2,700 Muslims taken prisoner during his capture of Acre, an order that the author terms "cruel and cowardly", and would today be cause for a war crimes tribunal. Well, so much for the flower of English chivalry.

SALADIN AND THE FALL OF JERUSALEM should satisfy a reader such as myself that seeks a general knowledge of Saladin and his accomplishments without getting too obsessive about it.

And what of Balian? While he was one of only three knights left after the Battle of Hitton to defend Jerusalem, and who indeed played the key role in the defense of the city and subsequent surrender negotiations with Saladin, Balian had only a relatively small part in the rest of the story - so small that I had to resort to a Web encyclopedia to get more info about the man. What I learned there was that his saga in THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was rampant fiction evidently hallucinated by a Hollywood screenwriter in the throes of an illegal substance. Especially that bit about running off with Sybilla. Gee, why doesn't that surprise me?

penetrating, fresh, insightful.......1999-10-23

"The Inner Life of Therese of Lisieux" is a short and powerful study of Therese, carefully researched and fascinating. In ten short chapters O'Connor examines Therese's way, Therese and the priesthood, and reveals what was original in Therese's thought and life against the context of her society. Her study of "the rough, unpolished details of her days" yields a deep understanding of Therese's life as it was lived. Don't miss it.
