Coaching for Peak Employee Performance : A Practical Guide to Supporting Employee Development .......2005-09-21
A very good tool for helping struggling employees. Good ideas for practical applications.
A great guide for identifying and developing individuals.......1999-02-06
This is a great little guide for identifying and developing strengths and weaknesses of individuals in organizations. The tone of the book is very 'real world' and managers at all levels can take something away from the knowledge and witty display of graph techniques quickly.
Best of all, "Coaching for Peak Employee Performance" is realistic. While introducing mentorship /coaching, you set up the parameters and expectations as well as developing the assessment device.Focussed on the professional level, this guide can help maintain and develop any organizational relationship and adopting just a couple of the techniques can make you more effective.
Although basic and broad, "Coaching for Peak Employee Performance" is entertaining and really helps you wrap your arms around these concepts. It is such a good introduction that I gotta give it two thumbs up. DA>

Book Description
This large illustrated book offers some uniquely modern and helpful information geared towards assisting people to "land" a new small farm operation of their own. Beginning with the "what fors" and "where fors", and walking carefully through the pitfalls and challenges of the looking and buying process, this book could save the prospective farm buyer time, money and headache. If you are dreaming of a small "working" place in the country where you can grow your own food, and some to sell, this book will help mold your dreams into a working plan of action. If you're into the process of trying to buy a farm and stymied by all the gibberish and forms and sales people, this book should even the odds for you.

Not a practical guide.......2006-05-26
Unless you plan to have an agricultural based farm, using draft horses, DON'T Bother With This Book. It is an interesting read on horse powered farming, no practical advise, no "setting up" or design of a farm included. Why this title, I haven't a clue. I've never submitted a review to Amazon before, but I felt that the title of the book was so misleading that it was important to do so.
Very helpfull, very readable!.......2002-05-08
I found this book to be very easy to read. It's actually written in a language that the average person can understand; no technical "Realtor terms." The info is great and very helpful, even if you are just looking to buy a home with a big yard and not a farm. I was quite intrigued with the "horse powered" part, as I hadn't ever thought of anyone still using horses to work farms. This book is certainly food for thought!

Book Description
Magnetic fields are responsible for much of the variability and structuring in the universe, but only on the Sun can the basic magnetic field related processes be explored in detail. While several excellent textbooks have established a diagnostic foundation for exploring the physics of unmagnetized stellar atmospheres through spectral analysis, no corresponding treatise for magnetized stellar atmospheres has been available. The present monograph fills this gap. The theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of stellar magnetism is developed from first principles in a comprehensive way, both within the frameworks of classical physics and quantum field theory, together with a presentation of the various solar applications. This textbook can serve as an introduction to solar and stellar magnetism for astronomers and physicists at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level and will also become a resource book for more senior scientists with a general interest in cosmic magnetic fields.

Book Description
Many processes of the chemical industry are based upon heterogeneous catalysis. Two important items of these processes are the development of the catalyst itself and the design and optimization of the reactor. Both aspects would benefit from rigorous and accurate kinetic modeling, based upon information on the working catalyst gained from classical steady state experimentation, but also from studies using surface science techniques, from quantum chemical calculations providing more insight into possible reaction pathways and from transient experimentation dealing with reactions and reactors. This information is seldom combined into a kinetic model and into a quantitative description of the process. Generally the catalytic aspects are dealt with by chemists and by physicists, while the chemical engineers are called upon for mechanical aspects of the reactor design and its control. The symposium "Dynamics of Surfaces and Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis" aims at illustrating a more global and concerted approach through a number of prestigious keynote lectures and severely screened oral and poster presentations.

Noncommutative Geometry
ASIN: 0521831970 |
Book Description
Based on a graduate course taught at Utrecht University, this book provides a short introduction to the theory of Foliations and Lie Groupoids to students who have already taken a first course in differential geometry. Ieke Moerdijk and Janez Mrcun include detailed references to enable students to find the requisite background material in the research literature. The text features many exercises and worked examples.
Download Description
This book gives a quick introduction to the theory of foliations, Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. An important feature is the emphasis on the interplay between these concepts: Lie groupoids form an indispensable tool to study the transverse structure of foliations as well as their noncommutative geometry, while the theory of foliations has immediate applications to the Lie theory of groupoids and their infinitesimal algebroids. The book starts with a detailed presentation of the main classical theorems in the theory of foliations then proceeds to Molino's theory, Lie groupoids, constructing the holonomy groupoid of a foliation and finally Lie algebroids. Among other things, the authors discuss to what extent Lie's theory for Lie groups and Lie algebras holds in the more general context of groupoids and algebroids. Based on the authors' extensive teaching experience, this book contains numerous examples and exercises making it ideal for graduate students and their instructors.

Having served as a Marine pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Princeton literature professor Samuel Hynes is closely acquainted with conflict. He collates his experiences with those of dozens of other witnesses--poets such as Wilfred Owen and Ernst Jünger, conscience-stricken warriors such as Ryuji Nagatsuka and Philip Caputo, and resistance fighters such as Lucie Aubrac and Elena Skrjabina. Many of these witnesses are men and women from all sides of many struggles and from whom we've not heard before. Their voices add weight to Hynes's ideas that war is strange and terrible, and is waged largely against the innocent and powerless.
Book Description
The Soldiers' Tale is the story of modern wars as told by the men who did the actual fighting. Hynes examines the journals, memoirs, and letters of men who fought in the two World Wars and in Vietnam, and also the wars fought against the weak and helpless in concentration camps, prisoner-of-war camps, and bombed cities. Interweaving his own reflections on war with brilliantly chosen passages from soldiers' accounts, he offers vivid answers to the question we all ask of men who have fought: What was it like? In these powerful pages the experiences of modern war, which seem unimaginable to those who weren't there, become comprehensible and real. The wide range of writers examined includes both famous literary memoirists like Robert Graves, Tim O'Brien, and Elie Wiesel, and unknown soldiers who wrote only their war stories. Using these testimonies, Hynes considers each war in terms of its special circumstances and its effects on men who fought. His understanding of the psychology of warfare--and of each war's role in history--gives this study its intellectual authority; the voices of the men who were there, and wrote about what they saw and felt, give it its powerful dramatic impact.
Samuel Hynes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

A Useful Gathering of Anglo American Tales.......2001-12-28
Having looked at this book with my primary interest in the experiences of the common soldier in mind, I am struck with the many interesting personal narratives herein. That said, I was disappointed to some extent that there were not any narratives from opponents or from other allies whose native tongue is not English. Perhaps this was the author's purpose, perhaps he did not have source permissions, or perhaps the publisher did not want to acquire rights to other stories.
That said, although this is therefore a one sided view, it has much literary merit and deserves a place in the personal narrative collection.
I would also recommend the author's own personal narrative of service as an aviator. Flights of Passage (c.f.)
Ponderous account, but worthwhile.......2001-12-26
Reads like a very long, tedious history term paper. He wrote his outline, he did the required reading, and he slogs through everything he read. For a short book I found it very very hard to finish, but it's a good source for other books that sound interesting, some of the ones he is writing about.
The concept of "war in the head" being formed by the books and movies soldiers watched growing up is useful.
Some peculiar opinions make it interesting and memorable, for example, he mentions twice that World War I is "our favorite war." News to me. Also, that all the dope-smoking in Viet Nam is a myth traceable to some articles in Esquire Magazine. Who knew?
At least two typographical errors in the text.
It is indeed "bearing witness to modern war.".......2001-01-27
Who best can describe war but the men who fought them? True, all personal accounts of war are highly focused, confined as they are to the tight little theater of each writer's involvement. Or involvements as in the case of that German officer's memorable account of his entire career, "Soldat."
Here, Hynes zooms out, assembling with great skill personal micro-views that together are a broad picture of war. His narrative weaves the recollections into a whole fabric.
Some sage once observed that old men start wars and young men fight them. Old men write glorious and expansive military histories, the young men who fought the battles write about the miseries of the battlefields -- and, occasionally the humor -- and the miseries of captivity. Soldiers who were unlucky enough to be prisoners of the Japanese became the real experts on the miseries of captivity.
This excellent book is marred at the end by an almost apologetic discussion of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That kind of warfare was unique, says Hynes, and so it was, being the only uses of nuclear bombs in world history. But what was the alternative? An invasion of a nation that had demonstrated repeatedly that every soldier would fight to the death? And at what cost, another several hundred thousand allied dead? Hynes writes:
"And although [the bombing] was an attack not on a specific military target but on a city, that was not new in August 1945; many cities were in ashes by then. But it was a strange, unique act of war; an action without a battle, without armies, without a visible enemy, in which neither courage nor cowardice mattered; an action for which there was no possible retaliation; an action so far outside the capabilities of armies up to then that it seemed like some catastrophic natural disaster -- only it was UNnatural. That was what was most disturbing about it, and still is. . . . So it was different from other bombed, burned-out cities, where there were guns and fighter planes to oppose the attack. . . It is more entirely a victim war than Auschwitz, where resistance was just barely possible and survival might be an act of will; more than the prisoner-of-war camps, helpless though those captives sometimes were. It was a unique event in the history of man's capacity to destroy his species."
By demonstrating that the U.S. DID have the capacity to level the entire island nation of Japan -- if not the ability to destroy the species of man -- a beaten but still ferocious warring nation was brought to the table.
The casualties in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined were perhaps less than the deaths in that single massacre in Nanking, China, where Japanese soldiers systematically killed between 100,000 and 300,000 men, women and children. Shot them one by one. But somehow, in Hynes's view, that kind of killing is war, where the unprecedented atomic explosions were not war, but something else, something UNnatural. I don't agree. Was the barbarism of the Japanese military during WWII natural? I don't think so.
Regardless of this objection, I consider "The Soldiers' Tale" to be an outstanding contribution to war literature.
Through the eyes of those who fought.......2000-02-27
Samuel Hynes background as a Marine bomber pilot in World war II helped intensify his focus in bringing "Soldier's Tale" to life. His keen eye for detail and brilliant anaylsis of human experiecnce makes this a fascinating read.
The accounts bear witness to the difficulties men faced in World War II and Vietnam and is a discovery of mankind and how they act and react during times of intense struggle.
The accounts, filled with fear, anger, frustration and courage must be remembered and not just stored away on some dusty shelf. Within these pages you stare face to face into the brutal reality of survival versus death, and walk away with a glimpse into what it was like for those who were there.
A detailed examination of the soldiers'literature of war........1999-01-02
Along with the three great books on war by Paul Fussell, Samuel Hynes' book will stand as a landmark. Hynes, like Fussell, as a veteran of World War II writes with a deep personal as well as a literary insight. Unlike Fussell he also participated in the Korean war. Both men became professors of literature at major universities, and both men write with skill and feeling. This work exhibits a very special form of literary criticism. No doubt other books will be written about the effects of the 20th Century's wars on the men who fought them, but there will be none that is better conceived or better executed. By examining the extensive literature of the century's wars, particularly the literature of the wars' participants, he comes closer than any writer I have read to date, with the possible exception of Paul Fussell, to understanding and explicating its effects. Hynes tells the truth by citing from and describing the works of war's participants. The excellent notes and an extensive bibliography of personal narratives of modern war add immeasurably to the book's value.

Conservatism's Forgotten Man.......2003-04-29
James Burnham (1905-1987) may be the "forgotten man" of the Conservative movement. Although he has been the subject of a few monographs and chapters in various books on the conservative movement, his name is not well known in the conservative world. Many who have heard of Russell Kirk, Whittaker Chambers and William Buckley probably know him only as a writer of apocalyptic anti-Communist books in the 50s and 60s.
Burnham's life was fascinating, and this book is a well-written, enjoyable biography. Born to a wealthy railroad executive, Burnham attended Princeton where he studied philosophy and literature. There he first became associated with Philip Wheelwright (he was also at Princeton at the same time as Cornelius van Til - another Wheelwright student -- but Kelly makes no mention of whether they were acquainted). He attended Oxford where he met Tolkien and Brand Blanshard. In the 1930s, Burnham became a Communist (of sorts) and an advisor to Leon Trotsky. In the late 1930s, Burnham rejected Communism and ultimately became a conservative. He even worked for the CIA for a few years.
Burnham began writing for National Review from its inception in 1954 where most of his writing concerned foreign policy and winning the Cold War. Burnham continued with National Review until he suffered a stroke in 1977, which impaired his short-term memory.
Burnham is not easy to pigeonhole. He was neither a member of the Old Right nor the Neocon Right, but shared characteristics of both. While sympathetic to free enterprise, he wasn't a doctrinaire believer in laissez faire. He rejected isolationism, but his internationalism was largely limited to anti-Communism. For example, he opposed US involvement in the Middle East.
Burnham's views on Congressional supremacy, his partial support for Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his views on racial matters would place him, broadly speaking, on the paleconservative spectrum. Burnham rejected neoconservatism when it first appeared as a distinct ideology in the 70s and his last public appearance, in 1983, was to accept an award from The Ingersoll Foundation, which is associated with a paleoconservative think-tank. In light of all this, it is a stretch for Mr. Kelly to suggest that Burnham was a proto-neoconservative.

Book Description
They had the most dangerous job n the Air Force. Now Bury Us Upside Down reveals the never-before-told story of the Vietnam War’s top-secret jet-fighter outfit–an all-volunteer unit composed of truly extraordinary men who flew missions from which heroes are made.
In today’s wars, computers, targeting pods, lasers, and precision-guided bombs help FAC (forward air controller) pilots identify and destroy targets from safe distances. But in the search for enemy traffic on the elusive Ho Chi Minh Trail, always risking enemy fire, capture, and death, pilots had to drop low enough to glimpse the telltale signs of movement such as suspicious dust on treetops or disappearing tire marks on a dirt road (indicating a hidden truck park). Written by an accomplished journalist and veteran, Bury Us Upside Down is the stunning story of these brave Americans, the men who flew in the covert Operation Commando Sabre–or “Misty”–the most innovative air operation of the war.
In missions that lasted for hours, the pilots of Misty flew zigzag patterns searching for enemy troops, vehicles, and weapons, without benefit of night-vision goggles, infrared devices, or other now common sensors. What they gained in exhilarating autonomy also cost them: of 157 pilots, 34 were shot down, 3 captured, and 7 killed. Here is a firsthand account of courage and technical mastery under fire. Here, too, is a tale of forbearance and loss, including the experience of the family of a missing Misty flier–Howard K. Williams–as they learn, after twenty-three years, that his remains have been found.
Now that bombs are smart and remote sensors are even smarter, the missions that the Mistys flew would now be considered no less than suicidal. Bury Us Upside Down reminds us that for some, such dangers simply came with the territory.

The Big Picture.......2007-10-01
This book will give you the big picture of the Vietnam conflict from the viewpoint of the cockpit, flight surgeon, intelligence officer and wives at home with timely notes on the then-current news of the war. Read it and learn the way it really was.
Very well done.......2007-07-12
Clearly and concisely written account of a little known part of the Vietnam war. Perhaps a bit too much on the political aspects of the time but the rest of the book makes up for that.
The story of men who were Sierra Hotel.......2007-07-06
Bury Us Upside Down is the story of the Fast Forward Air Controller (FAC) and their efforts in Route Pack 1 during the Vietnam War. These men flew the F-100F Super Sabre (a twin seated version of the Super Sabre) looking for Vietnamese targets in Route Pack 1 and guiding the bombing forces to them. This story is told from the foundation of Misty (this was the name for all of the flights that Commando Sabre [Fast FAC's in Pack 1] performed) to its replacement by F-4's later in the war. While focus is on the pilots and their exploits, Mr. Newman and Mr. Sheppard include the Intelligence section and the Flight Surgeon (a character from the word go) for the unit. In addition, the book does bring the families of the Misty's in at the appropriate points (I loved how the book opens with the burial of a Misty pilot that had been MIA, it makes the book read more as a memorial of the unit than a oral history).
In the different chapters we're introduced to the different Misty's and the exploits they perform in executing their missions. Missions for them were from 4-8 hours in length with multiple in-air refuelings. In addition to spotting ground traffic and other targets and directing the bombing, Misty's were important for directing/assisting the recovery of downed pilots (there's a great chapter on the attempted recovery of Lance Sijan along with other exciting recovery opertions) to working with other intelligence gathering operations. We also get to read about Misty's feelings about the different aircraft and their drivers (always positive about the Rescue guys in the Skyraiders and Jolly Green Giants, also for the Thud Drivers [F-105 Thunderchiefs], referencing them as the A-Team).
Rating wise this book is a SOLID 4.5 book. The exploits are well written, there's been great input provided by the former Misty's (yes, in the back they pay great tribute to the contributions from the former Misty's in developing the book). The photo's are a nice addition and the descriptions are crisp. However, this doesn't quite make it to the 5 star bar for me. Given that, Amazons rating system forces me to lower it to a 4 star book. So sorry. However this is a must read for those interested in the air war over North Vietnam.
Pretty good read.......2007-05-16
My favorite war book is "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge. Sledge's book detailed his exploits in World War II. In comparison, "Bury Us Upside Down" details the exploits of a secret fighter pilot squad during the Vietnam War. Bury Us frequently switches focus to different pilots as their tours end or they are lost in combat. You get to read about a few POWs, about the hellish experience the pilots' families back home had to endure and about the war prisons themselves. The book ends with recent investigations into crash sites in Vietnam; so, you get to see Misty's war from start to finish to post-battle events.
I much rather prefer Sledge's style since it was one man's experience versus "Bury Us Upside Down"'s squadron-based approach. Even so, it was a good read and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in war books. This was my first time reading about air combat; I'll probably buy a couple more books like this.

Book Description
In this volume, the third, of her autobiography, the author describes the first five years of her married life, in California. With living still crude, most roads unimproved, and home conveniences mere dreams, they worked to build a life in this pristine state, still mostly untouched by man.

Great series of Early American Life.......2007-03-25
Of course I am going to give this a good review because it is about my (extended) family. I recommend following up with her other 3 books. My favorite of the series has been Hardscrabble Journey, but you have to read the rest to really grasp what Florence went through in her life.
