Good Train, bad technology.......1998-08-28

"Multimedia Training" is an excellent book for CBT and the techniques of making the training as effective and fun as possible. The examples are good but use Macromedia's Authorware 3 with the files using Authorware 2 formats. The current version of the program is 4. The files do not open, the features of the program do not work and with the changes make to create version 4 make the notation obsolete and confusing. Again the training ideas are great but the delivery system has to be updated. Since the heart of Computer Based Training is handling change, this book fails in its own backyard.

Excellent hands on guide. However..........1997-05-13

I found this book an excellent introduction to the development of TBL methods and software. The authors obviously know what they are writing about. My only complaint is that none of the lessons included as examples on the accompanying disk work as the book suggests. Specifically, the *.apw files which are supposed to open "when double-clicked in file manager" come up with a "feature not activated" comment. This is a pity. It would have been useful to see the working version of the example(s) before doing the lesson

One of the best biographies of St. Philip Neri avaliable........2002-06-09

This excellent biography of St. Philip Neri presents a complete portrait of the great 16th century "Apostle of Rome", St. Philip Neri. Rather than stressing the excessive asceticism of the time, St. Philip emphasised the great love and mercy of God, thus bringing back many people to the practise of the faith and and inspiring many to lead holy lives.

It presents the reader with a picture of St. Philip, a man both on fire for the Lord and a saint with an immense sense of humour. This is one of the best biographies of St. Philip that I've found and I reccommend it highly.

The foreign policy of Eisenhower and Dulles........2007-03-05

This is a somewhat dry recounting of the foreign policy of John Foster Dulles, who was Eisenhower's Secretary of State. I did not know what drove Eisenhower's foreign policy, but Immerman's book showed it was a combination of Eisenhower's practicability and Dulles's theory. Dulles had been influencing foreign policy since his "Uncle Bert" was Wilson's Secretary of State. Dulles was a smart man, but I think his theory on the Soviets at the time bear an reexamination. What Dulles sought was a rollback, but there was little chance of that with the Soviets.

There are few books about Dulles, and this answered some of my questions about the man and his policy. As such, this book is focused to the academic audience, so I would not advise it for the general reading population.
