Not the best choice.......2001-11-01

This book does not live up to its title "Complete". It does not give enough examples for different types of scenarios. It does not do an effective job explaining how to tailor a letter to different needs or addressing or defining legal concerns. That's what I wanted when I was looking for a book. Unfortunately, it was about the only thing on the market. I do like the way the book is set up; it just does not go into enough detail to be completely useful. This book is a start in the right direction but it is incomplete. If I had to do it over again, I would not have purchased this book.

Well worth reading for HR professionals.......2001-05-21

'The Complete Human Resources Writing Guide' is well worth reading for HR professionals. It gives practical information and tools on how the HR function can be performed truly.

Diane Arthur divides her book into two sections:

* Section One- It deals with general writing skills such as writing style and tone, jargon, and structure, format, and design of letters, memos, brochures, and programs.

* Section Two- It examines specific HR documents. It contains over one hundred writing samples such as job descriptions, letters to applicants, letters to rejected and selected applicants, new employee announcements, performance appraisals, and newsletters.

I highly recommend this guide to all HR professionals.

A great how-to guide for HR practitioners........1999-03-02

It serves as a guide for effective writing techniques and presents numerous samples of human resource documents such as forms, checklists, policies, memos, notices, letters and programs. It includes guidelines and samples for writing a handbook and policy manual. A practical, well written (of course), and greatly needed work.

The interest in control of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) systems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of transport-reaction processes that exhibit strong spatial variations. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of PDE systems and nonlinear control theory, control of nonlinear PDEs has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control. This book---the first of its kind---presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear and robust feedback controllers for broad classes of nonlinear PDE systems and illustrates their applications to transport-reaction processes of industrial interest. The controllers use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output tracking and attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty.

Beginning with an introduction to control of PDE systems, the book discusses nonlinear and robust control of hyperbolic and parabolic PDEs with fixed spatial domains, and parabolic PDEs with time-dependent spatial domains. The synthesis of the controllers is performed by using geometric and Lyapunov-based control techniques. The book includes comparisons of the methods followed for controller synthesis with other approaches and discussions of practical implementation issues that can help researchers and engineers understand the development and application of the methods in greater depth. The methods are applied to numerous convection-reaction and diffusion-reaction processes, including a rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition reactor and a crystal growth process. The resulting benefits in closed-loop performance and robustness compared to other techniques for control of transport-reaction processes are demonstrated through computer simulations.

The book assumes a basic knowledge about PDE systems and nonlinear control.

Tales of a Tail Gunner.......2003-10-09

Just a great simple, and true story. I was a tailgunner on B-17s same time as Picardo in B-24s. Picardo tells it as it was. Authentic as you can get.

This is not a flowery high-end literary treatment of the WWII tailgunner experience but is certainly an enjoyable story. I felt like I was listening to somebodys Dad do a good job of telling about their experiences in the big war.

Eddie Picardo represents thousands of prople who served our country in a time of need. Eddie has done a great service to all of his fellow veterans by recording his memories. The book covers some personal experiences prior to WWII as well as time he spent in the military and after. It is a good general review of the times.

Rooikraal Revisited: Farming During Apartheid is an autobiographical and nostalgic study of a life left behind.

Dylan Weston lived on a dairy farm, Rooikraal, during the Apartheid regime and this collection documents the people, places, interests, and recollections of life in rural South Africa.

The bitterness of Apartheid, its inhumanity, is shown—but the good will of the common folk who shared their lives on these "islands of civilization" known as farms is also appreciated and enjoyed.

Some of the stories tell of the political impact on the lives of common people, while others tell of human suffering and superstition. Several of the stories describe adventures with animals—farm animals generally, but also the great serpent the Rinkhals.

The people she knew and loved are gone. There are few traces of their lives and of their sense of community left on Rooikraal. The lesson of life, which she learns, is that one can never return to the land of yore; it lives only in the heart and memory—where in the retelling it seems to gain a sense of reality.

Rooikraal Revisited is a poignant account of the author's life on a farm in Africa during Apartheid. Always vivid, often touching, and sometimes disturbing, Weston's stories introduce us to the colorful characters - both black and white - who were part of her experience, detail events in that unique time and culture, and share some valuable insights regarding racism, humanity, and the passage of time. Particularly haunting is the story entitled "Elizabeth's Potato; " I read this some time ago and still can't get it out of my head. The only criticism I have about the collection is that I wanted some of the stories to be longer; I wanted to know more.

If you're going to read one book on civil rights, this is it.......2003-11-15

I'd pair the book with a more nationally-oriented one, such as the Taylor Branch trilogy, which give a better sense of national politics, but Payne's book is both profound and profoundly moving in its depiction of local communities and Ella Baker's "Organizing Tradition", which turns a number of assumptions about the movement on their head. I've read the book a few times with students and never fail to be personally engaged and to have invigorating classes with students. Great, great stuff!

Brilliance that doesn't blind but illuminates.......2002-06-18

I agree with the earlier reviews but I'd like to provide some details about this book's strengths.
First, Payne places the people who made the Mississippi movement at the center the story. He tells the story of both the original local leaders who made it possible for the civil rights movement to happen in Mississippi and the activists who followed their lead in the 1960s.
Second, he extends the time span of the civil rights movement, showing that it would not have been possible without the "organizing tradition" referred to in the subtitle. Payne expertly traces the relationships and linkages between different generations of heroic troublemakers in Mississippi.
Third, he shows that the original radicals, and I mean those who wanted to change Mississippi from its roots, were those who had already challenged the system to achieve personal gain. "Bourgeois" blacks in Mississippi weren't uniformly complacent or fearful. Wisely, Payne does not use this fact to justify any notion of a "talented tenth" that ought to lead the masses.
Fourth, the chapter on Ella Baker is a stunning and riveting account of one heroic troublemaker who didn't receive enough recognition for her efforts.
Fifth, when Payne writes about what we typically consider the civil rights movement, he places you in the midst of the activists and makes you feel their exhileration, exhaustion, frustration, fear, and courage. Scholarly books never have this quality. At the same time, he does this in a historical context and with a critical eye which absolutely illuminate the raw material in a way that first-person and journalistic treatments rarely approach.
For these reasons, and many more, this is clearly the best of many excellent books on the civil rights movement. Some could fault Payne for placing less emphasis on the national and institutional dimensions of the freedom struggle. But, in the case of the black American struggle for freedom, Payne shows us the story begins with, and is carried by, people who tried to change their communities, not their nation.

Read this Book!.......2001-05-18

As a history major, I have various interests. One of my favorite things to study is the civil rights movement. Of all the books that I have seen, few match the caliber of this book. It takes the state of Mississippi (which may be the book's greatest irony)and shows how powerful a grassroots movement such as the civil rights movement can be with the proper forms of leadership. I urge anyone who is interested in learning about the civil rights movement should start with this book!

Scholarly Writing at Its Best.......2000-04-12

Two years ago the author taught a short course at my college on the Mississippi civil rights movemement. He used this book, and I've been recommending it to people ever since. His style and content are both amazing, and I feel really lucky to have had an opportunity to read this book in a course structured around it. _I've Got the Light of Freedom_ offers a new perspective on the way history is taught and remembered. Organizing and people's history are emphasized in what happens to be one of the best movement books out there. It's everything scholarly writing should be. Kudos to Charles Payne.
