Very enjoyable and well done.......2006-07-16

Not a bad book at all. Dean Joy joined the war late because of an interesting school deferment. He wanted to fly the famous P-51 Mustang but ended up the71st Infantry Division. The book is very interesting reading about a unit that doesn't get a lot of press because they entered the war so late. The book is an easy read, very well written, and provides a good overview of the end of the war. Of particular interest is his description of four captured P-51 Mustangs that were converted to German use.

Good WWII Memoir of Combat Described by Young American GI.......2004-03-30

A must for WWII History buffs, but an easy read for all readers. The author recalls how he wanted, along with many other young U.S high school grads to register for military service in WWII and to "fly". With his easy writing style and incredible drawings, Dean Joy pulls you into his daily disappointments as he realized he would fight as an infantryman. You feel what he did as he writes letters home to his beloved parents. Its as though I actually felt, saw, and heard, what this young man did. The remarkable discription of the different sounds of artillery, the German towns and rivers that the Allies went through, the pride of being in Patton's 3rd Army. Along with the author, I hated the "Krauts" and sorrowed over German civilians losing homes and farms to the ravages of war. I literally "willed" this young man to make it home.

A little gem.......2006-03-31

I was given this book by a friend. I am not from Chicago nor am I a nurse, but I sat down with it and read it from cover to cover in one sitting in an afternoon. I was particularly interested in the time frame of the early 1970's and her descriptions of the various social and political changes going on at the time. I was in secretarial school at the time, and her description of the preciseness of the uniform hemlines and tea time at the nursing school made me think of the white gloves we were required to wear and the "etiquette" of the times we were required to learn. I came away with a newfound respect for the nursing profession and for the challenges she faced. I was particularly stunned to read the current statistics regarding the shortage of nurses in our nation. Karels wrote this book 20 years after quitting the nursing profession. I give her kuddos for the thoroughness of her memories and research.

Accurate accounting of Cook County life........2006-02-02

I received a copy of the original release of this book from a friend and had to order my own to be a permanant part of my library. I worked at Cook County Hospital and was impressed with the accurate depiction of the condtions and atmosphere of this incredible institution at that time. It was not perfect, but I remember people striving to make it so along with the great compassion of many dedicated professionals working wth limited resources.

This book took me on personal journey of remembrance, but I feel it can give anyone an insight into the workings of a hospital designed to serve the most needy in a big city.

Carol's book was just fabulous - I have read it many times and found it very difficult to put down. I am also a Cook County grad,and Carol has done a great job of helping those who were a part of the that experience stay connected. Memories of CCSN will live on forever thanks to her great skills as a writer (as I recall, she was also an excellent nursing student!) All of us who were once a part of County loved and hated it so much and all at the same time. Thanks, Carol, for sharing with all of us who were part of that great time. For anyone who has ever been a nursing student this book will bring back memories, of happy times and stressful experiences. For those examining the historical struggle in nursing education this book provides good insight, not only into the student experience, but also into the larger economic and political domains during the early 1970's. The book is written with intelligence and compassion. Readers will marvel at the endurance and wisdom of nurses and the nursing profession.

Not coming from a nursing or health care background,I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Karel's book. Each chapter was a new vignette that helped me to identify with the challenging,sometimes shocking life of a novice nurse in an inner city hospital. Its full of passion, joy, humor and wonder. I enjoyed it so much that I have encouraged some friends and nurses that I know to read it, and they have all told me how much they appreciated my recommendation.

Under apartheid, South Africa's white minority regime felt threatened from within and outside its borders. The survival of the state was paramount in the minds of politicians and especially the military. Both shared a common belief that the country was at war, a total war which required a total response. To this end, a nuclear program was initiated in 1970 and the arms industry grew to a considerably large size. The leaders of the country decided to include chemical and biological weapons in their extensive arsenal, if only so that the military would have at its disposal a full range of a so-called range of unconventional weapons. The chemical and biological warfare program, code-named “Coast,” started in 1981 and officially ended in 1995, but that is still to be seen. Elimination Theory is the true story of my involvement as an informant/agent for the FBI, South African Intelligence, and the CIA during Project Coast and its networks in both the USA and South Africa.

I have read Mr. Byron's book and have found it quite informative and will use many of its chapters to inform my security forces. I think a job well done and admire him for many negatives that he has to deal with and has done well with all the odds that is not with him. Here in the Middle East, we commend him!! Well done!

It amazes me how someone can use anothers site to advertise their own message, such as Tami Tippit. What is up with this?? I have read the book and being a South African , who served during that time, Mr. Byron's account is quite accurate. I do not agree with everything in there, but over all it is quite good and glad that it was printed. But, I have read over the reviews of earlier and then now and it is quite obvious of a character killing of Mr. Byron by someone who has no life whatsoever. what a shame! Free press is what we all strive for and all the information that can be compiled is essential to teach the world what happened during this time. I will be contacting the author to share my experiences in the SADF and maybe we can shed anothe rlight on this troubled period of time.

I am proud that my nephew has finally written happen his times with the US and subsequent governments. The reviews that I have seen from Mr. Frasca and his partner seem very damaging to my nephew, but the true to be told is that he did do all the missions that he mentions in his book and they are envious. What a shame. If you want a true story and ramification of events then I would be happy to entertain questions.
I think that all of these ngative responses are of people that have no life whatsoever and they should be ashamed of themselves.
To not uphold someone for their country is just not mention with words.
These people obviously never served their country!

I found this book while surfing several internet bookshops and found the title quite interesting, so decided to purchase it and glad I did. A very interesting story that shows light to what is happening in my part of the world here in the Middle East. Though I did find some parts of it confusing and hard to follow, the story content is what makes the book!! It is a part of history that should be investigated and hopefully will never happen on a grand scale.
