STRAIGHT-FROM-THE-HIP ADVICE ON HOW TO LIVE THE DREAM FROM ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED WOMEN IN THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY

Powerful lessons on making it while remaining true to one's Latin roots

Hispanics are a demographic powerhouse, comprising approximately 35 million of the Unites States' population. In addition to tremendous growth in population (the Hispanic community grew by nearly 60% in the last decade alone) books by and for Latinas such as The Dirty Girls Social Club are gaining in popularity and crossing over into mainstream culture. But Hispanic women are caught in a cultural divide between traditional Latin values and modern American ideals. In La Vida Rica, or "The Good Life," Yrma Rico explains how, rather than turning her back on her cultural heritage she drew upon it for inspiration. She describes how the Latin traditions of hard work, close family ties, and spirituality can be a driving source of strength and self-assurance for Hispanic women. Inspiring reading for women of all ages, La Vida Rica offers:

Yrma Rico's empowering and hard-won lessons on life, love, and success come from her own rags-to-riches story. But more than a remarkable role model, readers will find a treasure of practical advice and a wealth of sincere compassion in La Vida Rica.

      - Set goals one day at a time-and become the CEO of her own life
      - Find her definition of success-and realize it
      - Create an image that helps her get ahead
      - Go beyond material success to find true happiness
      - Discover resources of strength, advice, and education to help reach her goals

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Upbeat and Wise.......2007-03-30

Are you a Latina who dreams of living la vida rica? Or perhaps you just want to understand this vibrant culture better. Then listen to Yrma Rico, who grew up as one of seven children of migrant farm workers and became a multi-millionaire businesswoman.

More than 35 million Latinos (nearly half of which are women), live in the U.S. today, and that number is rapidly expanding. But to become truly prosperous, says Rico, Latinas must bridge the chasm between traditional Lain values and modern American ideas. With specific advice and stories of successful Latina businesswomen, Rico tells women how to discover their passion; hone their image; acquire an education; build a career and manage their money while battling prejudice and preconceived ideas. Inspiring, upbeat and wise.

          Book Description

Humic substances are essentially everywhere in nature. They are vital to issues in water and land conservation, such as plant nutrition, pH regulation, pollution control, water purification, and the improvement of soil conditions. As a result, this book's audience spans across many disciplines, including agriculture, biology, soil science, chemistry, biochemistry, and engineering. This is the sixth book in a series of edited volumes deriving from the Humic Substances Seminars organized by Ghabbour and Davies and held every year at Northeastern University. The book synthesizes the latest international research on humic substances and provides researchers, professionals, and graduate students with vital information emerging from the field. The International Humic Substances Society (~500 members) does not have a journal and these annual editions also serve the purpose of keeping the society members current with the research.

            Book Description

This book describes in nontechnical language one of the success stories of modern (twentieth-century) astronomy. It presents us with the physical picture of what constitutes a star, a description of how a star evolves with time, how its shape and brightness change, how it manufactures the chemical elements deep in its interior, what makes it explode... The presentation also includes exotic objects such as supernovae, pulsars, neutron stars and white dwarfs, and of course, black holes. This revised edition brings the discussion up to date with the inclusion of astronomical events like Supernova 1987A and findings from the Hubble Space Telescope as well as other observations. The book is appropriate as supplementary material for an elementary course on astronomy and astrophysics. --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title

Injustice leaves scars on the minds and souls of men and damage inviduals as well as institutions. Neither Prime Minister AB Vajpayee, nor Defence Minister George Fernandes will be able to live down the monstrous wrong they perpetrated in dismissing Admiral Vishnu Bhagwat from his post of Chief of Naval Staff (CNS). The book chronicles Admiral Bhagwat's experiences with the "powers that be", particularly during his last nine maonths in office. It focuses on his struggle to defend the Constitution and prevent the fabric of the armed forces from being vitiated by the influence of arms dealers, communal forces and pliant officers of doubtful moral fibre. In addition, various substantive issues including scams and deals affecting National Security, have also been discussed.

                    Book Description

Recognized today largely for his contributions to chemistry and to the role of experiment in scientific investigation, Robert Boyle (1627-1691) wrote extensively on the causes of disease, the importance of dissection to medical education, and the use and preparation of drugs. In the first in-depth study of Boyle's medical writings, Barbara Beigun Kaplan argues that, in addition to his reputation in chemistry, Boyle deserves recognition for his strong medical interests.

                      Book Description

Remaking a World completes a triptych of volumes on social suffering, violence, and recovery. Social Suffering, the first volume, deals with sources and major forms of social adversity, with an emphasis on political violence. The second, Violence and Subjectivity, contains graphic accounts of how collective experience of violence can alter individual subjectivity. This third volume explores the ways communities "cope" with--endure, work through, break apart under, transcend--traumatic and other more insidious forms of violence, addressing the effects of violence at the level of local worlds, interpersonal relations, and individual lives. The authors highlight the complex relationship between recognition of suffering in the public sphere and experienced suffering in people's everyday lives. Rich in local detail, the book's comparative ethnographies bring out both the recalcitrance of tragedy and the meaning of healing in attempts to remake the world.

                        Book Description

The essays in Violence and Subjectivity, written by a distinguished international roster of contributors, consider the ways in which violence shapes subjectivity and acts upon people's capacity to engage everyday life. Like its predecessor volume, Social Suffering, which explored the different ways social force inflicts harm on individuals and groups, this collection ventures into many areas of ongoing violence, asking how people live with themselves and others when perpetrators, victims, and witnesses all come from the same social space.
From civil wars and ethnic riots to governmental and medical interventions at a more bureaucratic level, the authors address not only those extreme situations guaranteed to occupy precious media minutes but also the more subtle violences of science and state. However particular and circumscribed the site of any fieldwork may be, today's ethnographer finds local identities and circumstances molded by state and transnational forces, including the media themselves. These authors contest a new political geography that divides the world into "violence-prone areas" and "peaceful areas" and suggest that such descriptions might themselves contribute to violence in the present global context.

5 out of 5 stars Blindness is power ...........2001-05-02

Blindness, the inability or refusal to see why we commit violence and to see the effects of violence on ourselves and others that continue for generations, is a kind of spiritless, hopeless and, in the end, impotent power.

That is one of the points of this marvelous book, a collection of articles written by anthropologists who have been through or who have been with those who have been through violence. Not only does violence kill, main and destroy, it changes those who live after. Violence sears identities, amputates parts of self, twisting how the survivors see themselves and others. We are some of those others.

From China to South Africa to Sri Lanka to the former Yugoslavia to India to Pakistan to Nigeria to what we call Western civilization, these essays carry us around the world to meet people to have done their human best to deal with inhumane circumstances. Sorting identities of the circumsized as opposed to the non-circumsized, trying to be a man when men have no fathers and whose primary role is to serve as targets for the enemy, the erasure of identity through steralization and the importance of memory are questions faced by the most ordinary of people. One of the most riviting and thought-provoking essays is titled, "On Not Becoming a "Terrorist"". In a culture of terrorism, can a person refuse to become one - and survive? It was a Mayan social commentator, Sam Colop, coming to terms with the decades of mass murder, who described the conqueror type. "It is not merely that his power makes him blind," he wrote, "nor that his power is accompanied by blindness, nor even that his power required blindness; it is, instead, quite simply that is blindness, his willed amorality, is his power, or a large part of it." And is it then the victims who should likewise seize power?

Arthur Kleinman brings it all home to "the violence in middle-class life under the regieme of disordered capitalism." "Rather than view violence, then, simply as a set of discrete events, which quite obviously it can also be, the perspective I am advancing seeks to unearth those entrenched processes of ordering the social world and making (or realizing) culture that themselves are forms of violence: violence that is multiple, mundane, and perhaps all the more fundamental because it is hidden or secret violence out of which images of people are shaped, experiences of groups are coerced, and agency itself is engendered." Or, to use a "mundane" example, can you recall in either a movie or TV show a single non-family dispute that was resolved without violence or aggression? Can we any longer imagine a way of solving social and political problems without violence, the threat of violence, creating new weapons, passing "tougher" laws, building new prisons or insisting (making) "the other person" make the sacrifice?

                        A great book.

                            Book Description

Across Boundaries is an autobiography that captures both a unique heart and a nation's history. Because Mamphela Ramphele began her life as a shy child born into the cage of apartheid - and gradually became an activist who helped set South Africa free -her personal story enlarges each reader's sense of possibilities. Because she was part of the Black Consciousness Movement that linked the personal to the political, she teaches us that race, sex, and class are linked, and that enemies can only be defeated if we refuse to imitate them. . . . No matter where or how each of us lives, Across Boundaries gives us a rare leader who teaches us to teach ourselves.-Gloria Steinem

"Stunningly moving and inspiring."- Marian Wright Edelman, president, Children's Defense Fund

"Survival," writes Mamphela Ramphele, "is a stronger force than the fear of offending others." Born black and female in apartheid-ruled South Africa, Ramphele went on to become one of the most distinguished women on the African continent - a prominent activist, medical doctor, anthropologist, teacher, university leader, as well as a mother to two sons. Across Boundaries chronicles Ramphele's inspiring journey, and reveals the staggering personal losses that coexisted with her astonishing political and professional achievements. In addition to recounting the fascinating and often gripping events of her life, she describes the personal side of her experiences - her early struggles to maintain dignity and hope in a world that devalued both black people and women; her battles against despair, especially after the murder of her colleague and lover Steven Biko and the death of her third child in infancy; her mistakes and regrets as well as her triumphs.

This book is about Mamphelafs political life. Personal aspects of her life are rarely told unless they pertain to her activism or illustrate inequality. Individuals are rarely mentioned; those that are, are rarely mentioned more than once.

Donft read this book if you want an old-fashioned story with interesting characters who interact to create entertaining plots.

Across Boundaries is an excellent book focussing on a mother's struggle to want a job and to be a mother at the same time. Even thogh this book was written by a woman from Africa it still pertains to many American mothers who struggle over the same problem. This book did not only focus on the mother aspect, but also on the fact that a woman wanted to help the condition of other woman also.

I found Mamphela Ramphele's autobiography very interesting and amazing. The struggles she went through during her life absolutely amazed me! She is one of the strongest women I have ever heard of. I enjoyed reading about her fight for rights, her relationship with Steve Biko, and how she balanced all of her activities. I found it very interesting that she did not put motherhood as a priority in her life as many other women do. I enjoyed reading "Across Boundaries" and I thought Mamphela did a good job of telling the true story of her life.

Across Boundaries was an excellent book about a women's struggle to be amother and have a career. As said in the book "Recognising thatyou are a member of the global village is essential to lifting you above the narrow nationalistic interests and concerns of your own country (222)." Mamphela's life was a pursuit for women to rise above the boundaries and the story was very detailed, and well written! END

                                    Book Description

This true story of a Victorian-era young woman who follows her husband to a small town with the improbable name of Gilt Edge, Montana, will remind readers of Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose, the classic novel of a woman's life in the Mountain West. As a young girl, Lillian Weston, the author's grandmother, aspired to be a concert pianist. However, as a young woman in turn-of-the-century New York, she became a newspaper columnist. Her marriage to Frank Hazen took her west in 1899, ending her career as a newspaperwoman. She turned her writing skills to journals, diaries, stories, and poems, which traced her family's life on a frontier that was no longer unspoiled.

The Hazens endured brutal winters and dry summers and endeavored to raise cattle and chickens by trial and error. Lillian was an assiduous diarist who included details of her turbulent marriage challenged by Frank's bad business deals. The details of birth control and child rearing, gambling and prostitution, education and health care are all part of this story, offering glimpses into everyday life that often go unreported in the larger story of western expansion.

Taken from the journals of a Victorian-era woman who followed her husband from New York to a small town in Montana, these reflections include birth control and child rearing, gambling and prostitution, education and health care in the Mountain West.

If you grew up gobbling down books about inspiring, independent women with pioneer spirit, you will enjoy reading this loving and learned biography of the author's grandmother born in 1865. Ms. Litz' research fleshes out the economic and social circumstances only slightly apparent in the books of our youth. Lillian Weston Hazen was a successful syndicated columnist in New York City in the late 1900s when she married a promising, rich Dartmouth graduate. The Depression of 1893 bankrupted them and dried up job prospects in the East. The only position her husband could find was bookkeeper for a mining company in a rough frontier town called Gilt Edge near Lewistown, Montana. Despite tremendous physical hardships and economic setbacks, they made a life for themselves and a surviving son where many were ground down and dropped out. Despite heavy ranch labor, Lillian carved out time to write and published in Scribners and some farming journals. Her lasting legacy will turn out to be the trunk of diaries and clippings that Joyce Litz found in 1949 following her death.

                                      Book Description

The International Monetary Fund under Constraint exposes a legal dilemma facing the IMF as it tackles international crisis management. Using the Asian crisis -- and more particularly economic and political events in Indonesia -- as an example, this volume examines whether the Fund's activities in Asia were legally justified.

The results of this analysis lead to the following question: What future role can the IMF play in the international financial architecture? The principles of international law and the legal foundations of the Fund are used to analyse the reform suggestions of economic experts and to find a suitable concept for future IMF involvement in financial crises and crises prevention.

This volume is a long-overdue legal analysis of IMF activities. It presents the combination of law and economics which was originally at the heart of the IMF but which so far has been ignored in today's reform discussion.
