HAHAHAHHAA What a funny sub-teacher; Mr. Lam is a fierce general, althought he broke the necks of evil vietcongs, he prefers shooting them up with a machine gun.

Excellent insight on the Indochina and Vietnam Wars.......2003-01-30

I bought this book because I was intrigued by the prospect of reading a memoir from the point of view of a South Vietnamese soldier. Although Gen. Lam Quang Thi was a very high-ranking member of the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) and attained high rank at a young age, I got the impression that he was one of the truly gifted officers in that army, who was idealistic about serving his country to the best of his abilities.

Throughout the book, Thi regularly takes issue with the corruption and incompetence of many of his fellow officers, and recounts the political situation in the South, where coup after coup after coup left the country of South Vietnam basically a rudderless ship. He tells of how many of his fellow officers attained high ranks, up to and including senior generals, not because of superior soldiering prowess, but because of having the right political connections. Even he (the author) benefitted a little from the political machinations of some of his superiors. In this regard, the book is an excellent source on the socio-political scene in Saigon in the 1960's.

However, as a war memoir, I found the book a little light in descriptions of battle and how he and the men under his command coped with the strain of combat. This is why I give the book only four stars. I suppose that as a general, his viewpoints of battle tend to be more detached and "big picture" oriented, which is reflected in his writing. Most descriptions of battles his units fought were mostly like, "We swept the area with the 1st regiment, while the 2nd was held in reserve. After heavy contact, we suffered 25 dead while the VC suffered 100 dead." None of the harrowing descriptions which can be found in many other terrific war memoirs are present here. Since so many of those other types of books have been written by American soldiers, with American perspectives, I was excited to finally be able to read one written from an Asian soldier's perspective. However, I was somewhat disappointed in this regard. All in all, however, I feel that this is a book that most Vietnam War buffs should read.

a life of Occupation and War..........2002-04-11

General Thi shares with us the major events of his life, from losing his father at an early age to the Viet Minh, to how his Uncles and Aunts were so instrumental in providing the Extended Family (Confucian) Values that enabled Lam and his brother to pull themselves up by their hard work and many accomplishments in school and later in their adult life.

We see through Lam's eyes the French Occupation of Vietnam, the reasons for the Viet Minh, the Fall of the French, the coming of the Americans, Lam's Army Career and how he so skillfully plays the hand Life has given him, making the best of what he has, leading all the way to making ARVN Lt. General (Three Star General) at such an early age through his sheer abilities and hard work.

The book also allows the Reader to see and experience Vietnamese Culture, from Tet (Chinese New Year), the tasty foods (I still can smell the Cha Gio) cooked in celebration of their various Holidays and Occations, to Confucian Extended Family Values of Respect for Elders and a High Premium on Education as the way to get ahead in Life, and how even later on in their lives when he outranks his Older Brother (who was "only" a Two Star General) that Older Brother still made the Final Decision and was obeyed when it came to Family Matters.

For those of you who did not know, Vietnamese Wives and Mothers, while seemingly docile and obedient, were actually Very Powerful when it came to Family Matters of Finance and Children. Vietnamese Family Values were demonstrated as we watch Lam and his Family when they get to visit with Emperor Bao Dai's Mother, and her demonstrated tenderness towards Children.

An excellent example of what one Vietnamese Life was like from 1950 to 1975, and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I really like this book. Edith Mayo still is a great inspiration; she was dedicated to her family and the care of the patients at Mayo Clinic.
The book is well written and I pick it up often for a bit of inspiration.
Edith could be "just in the next room", still praying and reaching out for those who need help.

Four American masterpieces- what connects them? .......2005-01-23

What connects these four American masterpieces? Melville and Hawthorne were friends, and in a sense helped inspire each other. Wouldn't it then have made more sense to put together their two greatest masterpieces, ' The Scarlett Letter' and ' Moby Dick' Or is it only a matter of size and convenience that Melville's last work, and one of his great ones 'Billy Budd'is chosen for this volume? And why link with them Crane and Twain? True their best books are chosen and so of these four great American masters we have the best books of three. And only one's greatest masterpiece, and arguably the greatest prose masterpiece in American literature is left out.
Yet how complain about the abundance of riches this volume offers? Each one of the four works here is a small world in itself.
Hester Prynne ( A Scarlet Letter) Huck, Henry Fleming , and Billy Budd each is put through a kind of moral test. Two have more or less tragic ends (Hester and Billy Budd) and two have redemptive moral journeys which enable them to continue on their journeys of life, wiser and morally strengthened.
This is great literature, the best America has to give. And the four taken together are if this is what the reader seeks, a bargain.

Excellent -- A Must Read........1998-03-14

The Scarlet Letter is super. It is well written and tells a touching tale of Puritan hypocrisy. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a masterpiece of American Literature. The Red Badge of Courage is Fine, and Billy Budd is the story of an innocent sailor prosecuted for a false charge of mutany.

The anti-slavery case of 1846, Wharton Jones vs. John Van Zandt, was argued before the U.S. Supreme Court by both Salmon P. Chase and William H. Seward. They represented my ancestor, John Van Zandt. Chase's argument is printed under another title. However, Chase's correspondence gives insight into his thoughts during this time and especially first-hand acccounts of my ancestor. It also includes letters by William H. Seward. This book also provides prescient accounts by numerous individuals reflecting the attitudes/opinions on the anti-slavery issue in American during the nineteenth century. I highly recommend it.

When he drinks, he gets drunk; when he gets horny, he ends up in bed with a betel nut-chewing Samoan prostitute; and when he decides to leave his wife and family in order to find himself, he goes all the way to the South Pacific--on a Russian icebreaker! Jaynes brings a similar neck-or-nothing attitude to his memoir of this voyage of discovery; subtitled A Really Sullen Memoir, Come Hell on High Water is Jaynes's harrowing and hilarious account of several months spent at sea with the surliest bunch of seafarers since the HMS Bounty. Among the inmates on board this very slow boat to Singapore are Toxic June, an elderly woman who delights in setting the passengers against each other; Agatha of the Lake District, a flirtatious septuagenarian, and her husband, Dick; Tennessee Ernie, a veteran of the war in the Pacific whose wartime reminiscences form the bulk of his conversation; and Little "Born to be Wild" Peter, a fussy retired pharmacist with an underdeveloped sense of humor.

As if a boatload of squabbling senior citizens weren't already enough to set Jaynes on edge, he must also contend with stopped-up toilets, inedible meals prepared by the Russian cook "Tuber, the Root-Crop Czar," and the boat's constant vibration which makes his "testicles hum like a tom cat's." Is it any wonder that Jaynes is crying like a baby in the captain's quarters before the ship even reaches the Philippines? Don't be fooled by the subtitle--Jaynes's memoir might be slightly cranky, but it's far from sullen.

Horrible, boring, and completely uninteresting book about a subject with so much potential: sea travel. Jaynes mostly complains about his fellow passengers amid his vanilla tales about various port stops. Do not waste your money!!!

Manuscript Should Have Been Swept off the Poopdeck!.......1998-12-24

Sullen is not the word I would attach to this diary. Petty or Bitchy would be closer to the point. Mr. Jaynes writes as if he thinks himself witty and clever. Though some may appreciate his brash sense of humor, I did not. He tells of his Camp Granada-like voyage at sea with ten elderly English-speaking passengers, a Russian crew and British officers as if he were the only decent person on board. His superior attitude immediately crushes any observation that might otherwise have been amusing. He calls the ship the "Anti Betty Ford" but seems to feel justified in believing himself sober, though time and again he falls off the wagon and engages in disgusting antics while his wife waits for him patiently in New York. Once again I was duped by a book advertising itself as funny, when it is nothing more than the ravings of a smart-ass.

Jaynes has taken midlife crisis to new depths of absurity. I laughed often and loudly from the time he sent off his check until he abandoned ship. His alliances are hilarious, the language scathing, and the irony fairly drips off the page. A quick read, but one of this summer's best. This is black humor at its very finest.

Jaynes has taken midlife crisis to the height of absurdity. I laughed laoudly and often from the time he regret mailing his check to his abandoning ship. The irony is amazing (beginning with the ship that was designed as an ice breaker destined to carry cargo and passengers through the Caribbean), his alliances of the strangest sort, and the language scathing. A quick read and one of the best this year. I'd recommend it to anyone over 45 who is considering running away to find him/her self.
