Good Review of the Advantages of Intrinsic Motivation.......2000-06-25

Since Taylor first identified the principles of scientific management, there has been a continuing evolution in thinking and best practices for how to create motivated employees who are more effective and efficient.

In the 1950s and 1960s, thinkers like Abraham Maslow, Frederick Hertzberg and David McCelland argued that external rewards could make a difference. Most companies today create "incentives" as a result to reward workers financially and psychologically for doing a good and improving job.

Since then, newer research has shown (by people like Teresa Amabile and her work in creativity) that the work itself can be designed in such a way as to stimulate higher effectiveness that comes from the worker's preference for doing the work. In essence, the work becomes fun and play, rather than drudgery.

A Better Place to Work explains the new research on intrinsic motivation, and provides a number of intersting case histories that show the theory in practice. Some of these case histories will be familiar to you, such as Southwest Airlines (if you have flown with them or read Nuts!). Most will not, yet the examples are interesting, understandable and illuminative. I particularly liked the examples (like Apex) that explored success in creating a learning organization (paying for skills, offering education every night after work, and encouraging people to use what they have learned).

The book is candid about what works and what does not. Although employee ownership can help create internal motivation, it is not sufficient of itself to allow that to occur. So you can learn how to be sure you get benefits from whatever you have done or decide to do on the ownership front.

The American Management Association strongly endorses this book, because it provided a copy to all of its members when the book first came out.

Reading about intrinsic motivation is a good idea. A better one is to then visit some of the companies listed and described in the book to get your own sense of what is going on in these companies. I hope you will enjoy your site visits!

The behavior of many technical systems important in everyday life can be described using discrete states and state-changing events. Stochastic discrete-event systems (SDES) capture the randomness in choices and over time due to activity delays and the probabilities of decisions. The starting point for the evaluation of quantitative issues like performance and dependability is a formal description of the system of interest in a model.

Armin Zimmermann delivers a coherent and comprehensive overview on modeling with and quantitative evaluation of SDES. An abstract model class for SDES is presented as a pivotal unifying result. Several important model classes, including queuing networks, Petri nets and automata, are detailed together with their formal translation into this abstract model class. Standard and recently developed algorithms for the performance evaluation, optimization and control of SDES are presented in the context of the abstract model class. The necessary software tool support is also covered. The book is completed with nontrivial examples from areas like manufacturing control, performance of communication systems, and supply-chain management, highlighting the application of the techniques presented.

For researchers and graduate students this monograph summarizes the body of knowledge for modeling and evaluating SDES, while bringing it to a new abstraction level with the introduction of a new and unifying framework. In addition, the extensive reference list is an excellent starting point for further detailed reading and research.

After an introductory review of basic statistics, Professor Nelson does a superb job of leading the reader to a complete understanding of Markov chains, motivated by definition and discussion of Poisson processes. The difficult topic of stationarity is treated with exceptional clarity. Additionally, the author's care in categorizing the states of Markov chains (e.g., transient, recurrent, periodic, aperiodic, etc.) is commendably superb. Each chapter begins with a practical "workaday" problem illustrating the value of the material in that chapter. Carefully graded exercise sets augment the reader's understanding of the material. Extreme care has been taken to keep the necessary detailed notations and subscripts standard, clear, and free of typographical errors.

This is a personal account of becoming an army pilot in World War II, serving until the end of the war, and returning for a second tour of duty as a weather officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force. I describe the process of going through aviation cadet classification, attending preflight school, primary, basic, and advanced flying school. I received my wings and commission in November 1943. I was a B25 instructor pilot in advanced flying school for a year, trained in the Douglas A20 Havoc attack bomber, and flew low-level combat missions in the Pacific Theater until the end of the war. Returning to active duty in August 1947, I attended meteorology school at New York University and served two years as a station weather officer at a reserve Air Force Base. I married and returned to civilian life to earn a degree in chemistry.

Great Book!.......2004-03-27

What a fascinating book... even though this was written by my "Uncle Bob", it is a fascinating look into the world of the young men in the years of World War II.

I've known my Uncle for many years and had little idea of the richness of his wartime experience. Reading the book, one really gets the feel of the experiences of many of the young men of our "Greatest Generation". Both the successes and the heartbreaks of losing close friends in battle.

Uncle Bob, thanks for writing this great book... it is very interesting and well written!

A doctor's tale with a difference.......2003-08-21

Once started I found it almost impossible to set this book aside to carry out other tasks. Eric's story is indicative of the outstanding achievements by pioneering Scotsmen practising medicine in most trying conditions. His anecdotes are both humorous and tragic, and warmly told. It is clear that he and his wife Margaret became well-beloved within the community they served, which in turn received the caring attention at the hands of a young medic at the outset of his career as a country doctor.

Plain and Simple.......2004-07-18

First things first....I am not an Orrin Hatch fan, I don't live in his state, and I have never really paid him much attention. Ultra-conservative friends of mine have always thought he was the greatest however. When I saw this book (75% off mind you) I couldn't resist seeing what he had to say.

My wife and I began reading this book aloud to one another on a long cross country trip. Both of us are moderate conservatives and we wanted to see what the far right was thinking. On several occasions during this book we found ourselves pondering deep philosophical issues and wrestling with our emotions regarding a myriad of subjects (stem cell research is most vivid in my memory).

Yes Senator Hatch does glance over some issues that were major black eyes to the GOP, instead opting for more words on democratic blunders (of course he would, as this is to be expected). In the end, I found myself unable to disagree with Senator Hatch's position on nearly all the issues he presents in the book -- something I know I will not be able to say after reading Clinton's book.

In short, this is a very thought provoking book which is excellently written. Senator Hatch shows guts and a surprising sense of humor. If you want to take some time and learn about the inner working of government, this is a very readable, insightful book.

A Reasonable Conservative.......2003-11-07

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning a little about how Congress works. Not everyone who spends a lot of time reading about American politics will find this book very informative, but for someone casually interested or for a young adult, this will be an excellent read.

Hatch describes how a Senator goes about passing or defeating legislation. Particularly interesting is his description of the defeat of labor law reform in 1977.

Senator Hatch comes across as very reasonable throughout his book. His description of his friendship with Ted Kennedy is an excellent example of how and why professionals should be able to work together and even be friends even if they choose to disagree about topics they hold to be important.

Fans of Clinton and opponents of some Republican nominees to the Supreme Court may find this book tiresome in parts. But a liberal who wishes to read the point of view of someone who disagrees on these issues will enjoy this book because of Hatch's reasonable, thoughtful approach. Conservatives will, of course, enjoy this book and may consider giving this book to as a gift to provide a good example to young adult readers.

The Best New Book On The Market.......2002-12-07

What a book! This book is funny and captivating - A real page-turner. Hatch writes at a level that readers can enjoy. He assumes that you are a legislative novice and takes the time to explain the players and the environment in a non-dry fashion. He has a great sense of humor, shows wit and has a phenomenal storytelling manner. If I seem as though I am trumpeting this book, I am. I truly came away smiling and didn't feel as if conquering the next page was going to be an arduous task. This book is political, without being political. A Democrat can read the book just as joyfully as a Republican because Hatch is not pushing an agenda, unlike Goldberg's Biased, but rather is telling the reader the "how" of his career, and less of the "why you should be a republican." --- All I can say is that I enjoyed it, and there is no reason you wouldn't also.

A Mediocre Book by a Great Man.......2002-11-29

I admire Orrin Hatch, and was thrilled when I stumbled (literally) across this book during a Christmas shopping excursion. The most interesting parts were Orrin reflecting on his decision to run for Senate, and the process of that campaign. Also interesting was the Clarence Thomas confirmation and the resulting controversy. Far less interesting were his long tangents on the Labor bills and others that I'm too lazy to recall. I love politics, and enjoyed this book a decent amount... but I fail to see how anybody who isn't both a diehard conservative and a political junkie would be able to finish this book. It can be pretty tedious at times. That being said, Mr. Hatch is a great American and I salute him.

DISAPPOINTING.......2002-11-29

Given the time this individual has served in the US Senate, I expected to come away with new insights into the legislative process, and other truths of governing from the perspective of a senior Senator. I was disappointed and now feel my expectations were much too high. This work was nothing more than an unworthy condensation of everything we've heard on "60 Minutes" or the national news every night for a number of years. No new insights, no memorable thoughts, no persuasive and careful analysis and certainly no powerful conclusions. Senator Hatch's discussion of the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings seemed nothing less than self-aggrandizing. The Senator's unnecessary tirade against a disgraced former President was unnecessary and, I think, below the station of a true Statesman. Recommendation: If you must read, borrow a copy; otherwise, pass on this one.

The author brings together some of the better readings on the International Political Economy. Some are a little dated, but good articles do stand the test of time. A good complement to other books, and generally easy to understand. The book is pricey for being a paperback and only 183 pages long.
