Book Description
This volume presents the papers from a major international conference aimed at cross-linking research in the fields of solar and stellar activity. The Yohkoh satellite, with its spectacular views of solar coronal structures seen via their X-ray emission, provided the immediate motivation for the conference. How do these solar structures transcribe into their stellar counterparts; what insights can the more extreme stellar activity provide to guide the analysis of solar data? Coming four years after the launch of Yohkoh, this conference provided a good platform for displaying its discoveries. Longer-term variation associated with the 11-year solar cycle can also be seen clearly in the data presented. The new data strongly support many earlier interpretations of such magnetodynamic activity, but also provide some new and perplexing mismatches now stimulating new theoretical work.

Book Description
This remarkable memoir tells the compelling story of the near-mythic British district officer who helped shape the first great Allied counteroffensive. Scottish-born and Cambridge-educated, Martin Clemens managed to survive months behind Japanese lines in one of the most unfriendly climates and terrains in the world. After countless partisan and spy missions, in 1942 he emerged from the jungle and integrated his Melanesian commando force into the heart of the 1st Marine Division's operations, earning the unfettered admiration of such legendary Marine officers as Vandegrift, Thomas, Twining, Edson, and Pate.
This book is based on a journal Clemens kept during the war and might well be the last critical source of analysis of the Solomon's campaign. His eyewitness accounts of harrowing long-distance patrols and life on the run from shadowy Japanese intelligence operatives and treacherous islanders are unmatched in the literature of the Pacific war. First published in 1998, the story, with an introduction by Allan R. Millett, is essential and enjoyable reading. 384 pages. 34 photographs. 6 line drawings. Paperback. 6 x 9 inches.
Customer Reviews:
Coastwatcher in World War II.......2006-03-09
I have read Walter Lord's book "Lonely Vigil" about the Pacific Island Coastwatchers several times and greatly enjoyed it. This, however, is a full book about just one of these Coastwatchers, and goes into quite a bit more detail about the daily routine and happenings during that time. He was most likely the most experienced and senior Coastwatcher, and his interaction with U.S. forces was extremely helpful.
Hats off to Martin Clemens.......2006-01-18
As an ex-patriot Australian now living in the U.S., I'm ashamed to admit I knew almost nothing about Guadalcanal, other than its reputation for being a bad place to be during WW2, until reading this outstanding book. My ignorance of the incredible risks Clemens and the Allied Forces took at that time is particularly surprising given that I knew the author as the father of a close friend when I was growing up in the late 1960s. I sat across the dining table from him during many Sunday dinners and heard nothing of his adventures in the Solomon Islands. Perhaps the author's reluctance to bore those around him with war stories, and my youthful lack of curiosity, deprived me of hearing the story first-hand. I'm truly grateful that he has shared this exciting and harrowing story with the world. Having read his account, I'm inspired to read other perspectives of the events that took place at that time. This book has reinforced my appreciation for those Allied soldiers who bravely fought off this persistent invader on our very doorstep while Australian civilians quietly went about their business at home.
Interesting story - but only if you know enough.......2005-12-11
This is the story of a British civil officer who had just arrived in the Solomons when war broke out. It is his story, what he saw, what he thought, during the time from before the war started until the U.S. army had solid control of Guadalcanal.
Where it is weak is that there is no context for the story. If you don't know about the Solomon's campaign, you will be totally lost. And there is no context for what he sees so again, you don't know how key some of the battles he was in were.
I think this is a good book for people who have a strong knowledge of the Solomin's campaign. And in that case it will give you a unique viewpoint of the war. But don't read it unless you do have that knowledge.
Great book.......2002-01-26
A wonderful book and a finely documented living history. Refreshing account based on Mr. Clemens actual diary notations. I have read almost every book on Guadalcanal and this one is definitely different. It reflects lulls between events and actually provides new information. The history and events in his story builds some natural suspense and his work is highly accurate! Not many books are written in a manner that makes you actually feel like you were there. Particularly good is the detailed writing of periperhal events surrounding well know events and battles. This work fills in many blanks will add another dimension to existing knowledge bases of historians and those interested in early pacific war. Also, not just a WWII campaign story but an excellent example of what can be accomplished when the odds are against you!
WWII: The definitive Story of the British Solomon Islands.......2001-08-23
For people interested in the Pacific WWII. This is the only book that provides the complete story of Coastwatchers and how they helped win the war on Guadalcanal. Never before been told and written by a near-mythic Coastwatcher Martin Clemens A compelling true adventure story. Of particular interest to Marines who were there but didn't have the slightest idea of what was going on in the background. For First Marine Division Marines this is a MUST read. I was there with Martin Clemens.

Moving Medicine: Delightful Book for All in Healing Arts.......2000-04-05
This book is very enjoyable to read. I found myself enthralled by this odd, athletic man who fairly stumbled into a profound understanding of the mind-body connection. His life-long struggle to bring his discovery to the light of day gives this book a dramatic edge. Milton Traeger started out as an acrobat and a boxer. While working at the post office, he took the advice of an employee notice: "Take a deep breath". The book continues: "Finding himself alone, he lowered his mailbag, paused and breathed. Many years later, he would say:"That was the beginning of me."' It's a great beginning of a great story.
I am an acupuncturist who has never had Traeger work, but I recognize key principles from Chinese medicine in what Traeger does and teaches. It is also similar to Chinese medicine in that most of the 'learning' cannot come from theories, it comes through the teacher. It's no wonder that his efforts to teach what he knew in his hands took him to such far away places.
I enjoyed this book so much that I deliberately read only a chapter at a time to savor it.
I recommend it to anyone, health care practitioner or not. I think it should be on the 'must read' list at massage schools. I wish my doctor would read it too. I hope you buy it.
great insight into one of alternative medicine's heroes.......1997-03-28
this biography helped give me an insight into the field of alternative medicine, why people are so eager to go to alternative practitioners, and what non-conventional practitioners have to offer that is valuable. milton trager was one of a kind and defines not only what a healer is but also shows the healing capacities within each of us. well written and timely, as dr. trager just died this year at the age of 88

Absolutely Fascinating.......2006-03-31
This book sat unread on my shelves for a while, and now I can't believe it didn't actually leap off the shelf into my hands to MAKE me read it; it's so utterly fascinating and engrossing that I haven't been able to put it down. I was expecting some dry history and feminism; this is a fascinating first-person portrait (or rather, five first-person portraits) of political struggle, social norms, everyday life, and revolution from the writings of five very literate, engaging writer/revolutionaries.
I hardly know how to review a book like this (since I can't talk about plot or about structure of arguments, as it's first-person memoirs), but it's been among the most worthwhile 250 pages of my reading life.
This book is a porthole to the life of the Intelligentsia........1999-01-06
The most amazing thing about this book is its entertainment value actually equals its historic value. These are bios of women who put their values and the lives of Russian peasants ahead of their own. It features the primary account of the world famous assassination of Governor Trepov from the pen of his assassin, Vera Zasulich. It also features Vera Figner's account of her unsuccessful (and finally successful) attempts to assassinate Tsar Alexander II. The sacrifices of these women include shedding aristocratic lifestyles for back breaking labor in noblemen's fields so they could teach peasants how to read and spread propaganda for their cause. Some of their comrades actually went insane in the process. You will read about their experiences as exiles in Siberia, and one of the greatest escapes Hollywood never saw. Whether you consider yourself a history buff, or just appreciate great stories, you will love this book.

Great book for anyone interested in life during the 1940s and 1950s in California. "Growing Up In California" held my interest from cover to cover. I enjoyed the flash backs to differant events that had a profound infuence on future subject matter. Definitely a must read for people that would like a personal account of life in California. After reading the book I felt a real connection with the book and the auther.
Growing up in California.......2002-06-29
A good read. Michael has the gift of making everything that life throws at him fascinating. What about the 60's and on?
The authentic flavours of a well-recalled childhood.......2002-05-31
Completely absorbing and unputdownable, Michael Barker's narrative has captured the authentic flavours of remembered childhood, and has recreated vividly a veritable pageant of characters. His book is full of humour, and wry observation of human,(and on occasion, very tellingly, canine) survival strategies. This is a book to own, savour and re-read.

Book Description
In 1943 the Nazis war machine had subdued most of Western Europe. A very young Ted Norman joins the 448th Bomb Group based in Seething, England, as part of the Allies effort to win the war. Casualties are high with 1 in 20 aircraft missing every mission. As the bombing raids push ever further into enemy territory, Ted is forced to reach the very limit of his own endurance in order to become the Captain his men depend on. This is a work of fiction. But the 448th Bomb Group, Very Heavy, was real. The 448th lost 137 planes to all causes in its eighteen months in the Europe, with a maximum of 48 B-24s assigned at any one time. The author, Nolan Lewis, has used his experiences of World War II to create a vividly realistic story of a young B24 bomber pilot. Since the war he has pursued many different occupations including writer and reporter for various companies including Portland Oregonian, KGW-TV News, Portland Public Schools Public Information Office, Gold Prospector Magazine, Cruising World, and several minor magazines. He currently lives in Ione, WA, USA.
Customer Reviews:
The Men Who Fought The War In Europe From The Sky. .......2007-04-15
What a great story, it has it all; courage, fear, love, war, pain, nightmares, action, death and killing and compelling characters. Author Nolan Lewis has created a moving, and at times, even a tender account of a young bomber pilot and his crew. It is really so much more than just a war story--it is a coming of age tale set in war times.
Nolan Lewis gives the reader a multidimensional look at the life of the bomber crews who flew mission over Europe in WWII. The narrative is well written and the dialog adds more layers of emotion to the story. You can tell that the author has had experiences with what he writes about. The action comes across as realistic. The book is an easy reading experience but it is not the normal simple formula plot. The emotional complexity of the leading characters gives the book a much greater depth than most books of this genre.
I recommend this book to those interested in flying, WWII stories or just good insightful reading entertainment.
A Spellbinding Read.......2006-07-31

Clouds are Always White on Top (Nolan Lewis)
First Rate Novel
This book is written by a man who experienced World War II first hand. The novel itself is about the experiences of a young B-24 bomber pilot flying what was at the time one of the largest and most well armed bomber aircraft of the time and at the age of barely 20 years old, little more than a boy.
The young pilots and their crews had to fly across the channel into Germany with very little fighter protection and then withstand prolonged periods of anti aircraft fire from which there was no protection. Evasive action could not be taken particularly as they were flying in tight formation. It was just pot luck whether you got through it or got shot down. They then had to drop their bombs at the target and face the flak all over again.
The pilots were told, do 25 missions and then you can go home for a while. Some of them never even made it back from the first mission. The same horrendous conditions also applied of course to the British crews as well as the Americans.
Because of his experiences in the War the author brings a strong feeling of reality to the book and makes you almost feel part of the crew, sitting in the base bar, waiting to see if it close early, which means there will be a mission next morning. Being stood down again because the weather, either at the target or around the home base precludes the planes taking off. The elation of being spared the mission only to find that the aircraft will leave as soon as the weather clears. The heartache of losing a close friend, knowing that as a pilot you are ferry these men to possible death.
It is a book that makes you think, and realise how lucky you were to be spared the almost barbaric conditions of fighting a war in which comradeship is the only thing that kept a lot of men from going insane.
The hero of the book Ted Norman has his own demons, recurring nightmares of a particular mission on which he is co-pilot and his captain is killed in the seat beside him, leaving Ted to get the aircraft and the surviving crew back home, although he has several wounds himself.
AN AMAZING STORY! You won't be disappointed........2006-07-08
Clouds Are Always White on Top -
Flying the Box the B-17 Flying Fortress Came In
by Nolan Lewis
To let you know what this book is about, I will quote from the back cover:
"This gripping story begins in 1943 when the Nazi war machine had subdued most of Western Europe.
A very young Ted Norman pilots an American B-24 bomber of the 448th Bomb Group as part of the Allied effort to win the war in Europe. Casualties are high with 1 in 20 aircraft missing-in-action every mission. As the bombing raids push ever further into enemy territory, Ted is forced to reach the very limit of his own endurance in order to become the Captain his men are depending on.
This is a work of fiction, but the 448th Bomb Group, Very Heavy, was real. The 448th was based for eighteen months in Seething, England, during which time they lost 137 planes to all causes, with a maximum of 48 B-24s assigned at any one time."
Nolan Lewis has created from his own experiences of World War II this fictional novel about a B-24 bomber pilot, Lieutenant Theodore Norman. Ted certainly comes to life for us right from page one as he sits next to Captain Hansen waiting to take off for his first bombing run over Germany. By page 22 Ted has a problem:
"Suddenly all hell breaks loose. The bombardier, who was down under and forward of Ted's feet is gone, along with the whole front of the plane. The temperature is somewhere around thirty degrees below zero and he has about a two-hundred-mile-an-hour wind blowing up between his feet. The ship begins to fall off on the left wing so he looks over at the Captain.
For the first time he realizes that the left windscreen is also gone, along with most of the Captain's head.
Next, he gets a panicky feeling. He's going blind! Everything is going dark. He wipes his hand across his face and realizes that it's blood running down into his eyes from a scalp wound, but he doesn't have enough hands to keep it and the ship both under control.
By this time the huge bomber is practically upside down. They are picking up speed real fast. He chops the throttles, hauls back on the wheel, and wracks it to the right, but realizes he's fighting the weight of the Captain's body that is slumped over the left wheel. He calls the navigator and says, `Jesus Christ, Glen, get up here and give me a hand.'
The spin has progressed to the point where Shannon has to fight his way forward. It seems like hours, but is probably less than half a minute before he reaches the cabin.
Shannon takes one look and says, `Holy shit!' He stands frozen for a couple of seconds before he can digest the mess he has found and begin to move."
Besides describing the dangers of flying B-24s over Germany, the author writes about Ted's luck with the English ladies, his regular nightmares, his feelings about the men lost to war, and his feelings about flying-the only thing he was really good at. After 42 flights over Germany and shortly after returning to the US, Ted requests a discharge. He thinks he'll get a job as a pilot and applies at United Airlines.
The interviewer says, "`Plenty of hours. B-24, B-29. Mostly four-engine. That's good.' As he continues to read he suddenly says, `Jesus. Is this right?'
When Ted leans forward to check what he's referring to, the finger is on his date of birth. At Ted's nod he says, `But that makes you only twenty years old?'"
April 1, 1951 Ted is recalled to active duty and assigned to 403rd Troop Carrier Wing to fight in Korea. His response is `Korea . . . What the hell's a Korea?'
And in conclusion: "Suddenly he's gripped by a heady exhilaration. He's going back where he belongs. Back to his world. Where he knows what he's doing. Back to where he's the best. Where he doesn't have to make excuses. Maybe this time he will qualify for the order of the wooden cross and be done with it."
If you like well-written, realistic war stories, you won't be disappointed by this author. There's a lot to be learned in subtle ways through another person's experiences. The book includes a photo of Nolan Lewis at age16 in his Air Force cadet uniform. Nolan currently lives in Ione, WA.
Forty-two flights over Germany and home by age 20. Unbelievable!

Coastal Stratocumulus-Topped Boundary Layers and the Role of Cloud-Top Entrainment
Manufacturer: Storming Media
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423518705 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A440524. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ability of the U.S. Navy's Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) (Trademark) to accurately forecast the height and structure of the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL) in the coastal zone is analyzed and compared to surface and aircraft observations from the Dynamics and Evolution of Coastal Stratus (DECS) field study conducted along the central coast of California from June 16 to July 22, 1999. The stratus field was found to have significant mesoscale variability within 100 km of the coast due to interaction between the mean flow and the coastal terrain. This structure is consistent with general hydraulic flow theory and the development of a low-level coastal jet. However, the specific characteristics on any given day were very sensitive to flow direction, inversion height, and synoptic conditions. With some modifications, the model predicted the general evolution of these events with qualitative fidelity, but was slow to dissipate the cloud and frequently produced surface fog versus stratus. A consistent tendency was found in the model's predictions of inversion heights 200-300 meters too low, weak inversion strengths, high integrated liquid water content, and weak buoyancy flux near the cloud top. These observed biases are consistent with underestimating the cloud top entrainment velocity and entrainment fluxes in the modeled boundary layer. An explicit entrainment parameterization was developed to better represent the sub-grid scale processes at cloud top and was tested in the single column and 3D versions of COAMPS.

Estimation of Stratocumulus-Topped Boundary Layer Depth Using Sea Surface and Remotely Sensed Cloud-Top Temperatures

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A873083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The depth of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is an important parameter for both scientific and operational meteorological applications. The depth of the marine boundary layer has a significant influence on the atmospheric dynamics in the coastal zone. Knowledge of the depth of stratocumulus-topped boundary layers (STELs) will enable coastal operations to more accurately anticipate weather, and electromagnetic propagation conditions. This study develops a satellite remote sensing technique for determining the height of MABLs topped with stratocumulus clouds. Validation of the technique using coastal rawinsonde dataset from the Monterey Area Ship Track (MAST) experiment revealed that an assumption of 41% cloud with a moist lapse rate equal to -7.0 deg C/km had the best overall fit to the data. However, for shallow boundary layers with depths below 400m the most accurate assumption was 75% cloud with a moist lapse rate equal to -6.5 deg C/km. The application of this technique to sounding data returned an overall BL depth accuracy of 50m while the satellite application returned an overall accuracy of 65m. A sensitivity analysis of both surface and cloud-top temperature revealed that a 1/2 deg C change in either temperature resulted in an error of 60-70m in boundary layer depth.

Book Description
This is the story of the life of a pioneer airmail pilot in the 1920's. Coming from a hard scrabble childhood Steve Brattson wanted to fly like the eagles. He became an airmail pilot. By guess and by God, and by the seat of his pants, he and his colleagues learned the way. The traveling public is the beneficiary.
Customer Reviews:
Great book about the early airmail pilots........2003-02-23
For the reader interested in the early days of aviation. Historically accurate. Little known information about how the airmail got started.
Adventures and Misadventures in the Air.......2001-08-02
Jamiesonn's book is highly readable and informative. I had never thought about what the pioneers in aviation had to go through and the courage and committment they showed after crashing repeatedly only to "get on the horse again." This book would be especially interesting to pilots and others in the aviation industry, and to the general public as well. Thanks to C.H. Jamieson for entertaining me as well as informing me.

Description:
The Along-Track Scanning Radiometer 2 (ATSR2) instrument has a dual view capability that allows for stereo height retrievals. Stereo heights were retrieved for selected scenes over the United Kingdom Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research and the United States Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program Southern Great Plains site from 1997 to 2000. Stereo cloud-top heights obtained with the 11 @mm and 1.6 @mm channels of ATSR2 were compared with ground-based millimeter-wave cloud radar measurements at both sites. On average ATSR2 11 @mm channel cloud-top height retrievals were 350 m higher than those from radar with a standard deviation of 1 km. This difference increased with decreasing cloud-top height. One major problem found in the 11 @mm channel cloud-top height retrievals was poor delineation between surface (i.e., clear) and low-altitude cloud pixels, though this tends to lower cloud-top heights rather than raise them. The ATSR2 1.6 @mm channel stereo cloud-top heights had large discrepancies compared to radar because of the 1.6 @mm channel sensitivity to a lower layer in the case of multilayer clouds or the terrain in the case of optically thin single-layer clouds. For single-layer clouds, the agreement between the ATSR2 1.6 @mm channel and the radar cloud-top heights was similar to that between ATSR2 11 @mm channel and radar cloud-top heights.

Improved retrievals of cloud boundaries from MODIS for use in air quality modeling [An article from: Atmospheric Environment]

S. Smith
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Atmospheric Environment, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
A new approach has been developed at the Center for Space Research (CSR) to determine cloud boundaries from satellite data for use in air quality modeling. The approach combines remotely sensed cloud thickness, obtained from the MODIS cloud optical property products, with cloud base height measurements made at surface weather observing facilities to determine cloud top height. When compared to cloud truth estimates, compiled from measurements made at the Southern Great Plains Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Site in Oklahoma, errors in cloud top height from this new method were found to be significantly smaller than those in the MODIS (MOD06) cloud product. It was also found that relatively small errors in MOD06 cloud top temperatures can be magnified in MOD06 cloud top pressures because the interpolation scheme appears to not adequately consider humidity profiles in the NCEP data used to make these conversions.
