I was very disappointed in this book. I feel the only people that will find this book useful are CPAs that have not gone online yet. While I did find a few useful sites I did not know about prior to reading the book but it was not worth. This book gives little insight on what I beleave the skills the CPA is going to need to lead his client on to the information superhighway.

Much of the hoopla surrounding quality circles, teams, and high-performance work systems has been based on anecdotes and very thin evidence. It has not been established that those employee involvement strategies amount to anything more than another series of management fads or ruses designed to get more out of workers without giving them anything in return. This revelatory book, written by some of the skeptics, lays some of the suspicion to rest.

Based on their visits to 44 plants and surveys of more than 4,000 employees, Eileen Appelbaum, Thomas Bailey, Peter Berg, and Arne L. Kalleberg concluded that companies are indeed more successful when managers share knowledge and power with workers and when workers assume increased responsibility and discretion.

The study of steel, apparel, and medical electronics and imaging plants revealed much. In self-directed teams, workers were able to eliminate bottlenecks and coordinate the work process. In task forces created to improve quality, they communicated with individuals outside their own work groups and were able to solve problems. Expensive equipment in steel mills operated with fewer interruptions, turnaround and labor costs were cut in apparel factories, and costly inventories of components and medical equipment were reduced.

And what did the employees think? The worker survey showed that jobs in participatory work systems often provide more challenging tasks and more opportunities for creativity. Employees in apparel had higher hourly earnings; those in steel had both higher hourly earnings and higher job satisfaction. Workers in more participatory settings were no more likely than others to report heavy workloads or excessive demands on their time. They were, however, less likely to report involuntary overtime or conflict with co-workers, and were more likely to be satisfied with their surroundings.

Manufacturing Advantage provides the best assessment available of the effectiveness of high-performance work systems. Freestanding chapters near the end of the book provide full documentation of research data without interrupting the narrative flow.

Skills For a Low Tech Future.......2006-03-07

A wonderful book, despite its having been originally written more than 100 years ago. Fresh and sobering look at what it takes to make a civilized society run on a daily basis without modern technology, from food production to how to make cotton mattresses by hand, to manufacturing coal based blocks for home heating and cooking - in a backyard; and how to build a k'ang, a raised heated platform used for sitting and sleeping.
'Farmers' also gives an idea of the human cost and effort needed to keep land fertile and productive, conserve scarce resources, and the ingenuity required daily to have a reasonably comfortable, sustainable lifestyle over many hundreds of generations - a workable world one can confidently pass on to one's descendents, something we DON'T have, for all our vaunted "quality of life" in the US.

A Three-War Marine and One of Maj. Norton's Best Books!.......1999-10-30

As an amateur military historian, I found GGIW to be one of the best written books on and about the Corps that I have ever read. While Len Maffioli will serve as the epitome of a Marine Staff NCO, I know, too, that Major "Doc" Norton has done a masterful job of putting Len's life on paper. The amount of research required by Norton was, no doubt, incredible. Students of the Marine Corps, students of WWII; those who are interesetd in the POW experience and the Korean War, and those who want to learn about the War in Vietnam, should add this book to their library. My hat is off to MGySgt. Maffioli for his heroic service to his country, and to Major Norton for having the wonderful talent of making it all seem so real -- from the page to the brain. Whoever said Marines can't write? Well done... Semper Fidleis. A retired Marine fan in South Carolina.

Required Reading For All Marines!!.......1998-10-29

"Grown Gray in War" is the biography of Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Len Maffioli. Maffioli served in combat on Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, during World War II; was taken prisoner by the North Koreans during the Korean War, and later escaped from the Chinese Communists after 6 months as a POW; then saw combat again during Tet, in Vietnam, in 1968. --Thus the tiltle of the book. This is Major Bruce H. Norton's 5th book on and about Marines. It was also a winner in the San Diego Book Awards for biographies in 1997. Skillfully researched and well-written, this book should, in my humble opinion, be required reading for Marines in all grades. To accurately describe the event's of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, is a tribute to Major Norton's skill as a Marine historian. A great read!!

THE STORY OF LEN MAFFIOLLI, ONE OF ONLY 18 MARINES TO ESCAPE FROM A CHINESE POW CAMP DURING THE KOREAN WAR, IS WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ ABOUT THE MARINE CORPS. WELL WRITTEN BY MAJ. B. H. NORTON, THIS STORY DOCUMENTS WWII, KOREA, AND VIETNAM IN REMARKABLE STYLE. HATS OFF TO NORTON AND MAFFIOLI FOR PUTTING TOGETHER A SUPERB STORY. TEN OUT OF TEN!!!

On "Outcasts of Poker Flat".......2004-06-06

From the familiar opening tableau to the token cast of characters, "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" had given me the false impression that it was fighting for the title of "The Quintessential Western". With a setting crucial to the plot, a regional dialect, and roles now iconic of the old "Wild West", the story is a prime selection for a study of local-color fiction-but the fact that it loosens the fetters of clich? with originality, allows it to transcend the genre. Unconcerned about "throwing the first stone", the incongruously named town of Poker Flat makes a capricious show of moral superiority and rids the town of its undesirables. In an obvious "tip of the hat" to irony, three of the exiles required the willing cooperation of the townspeople to commit their fateful crime. After suffering banishment, the four ordained pariahs are assailed by a storm. Oakhurst, the poker-faced conventional Western hero, selflessly refuses to leave behind the others when they underestimate the situation and decide to wait the blizzard out. Only after the na?ve and comparably innocent, Tom Swinson and Piney Woods, enter the scene, do noble characteristics of the prostitute and her madam become apparent. In these unadulterated eyes the "soiled" women are given another chance. These virtues may have never been tapped and now redemption is a possibility or the women may have always been honorable and the town in a sanctimonious fit has discarded two "queens".

It is doubtful that with the altruism and courage displayed in the story that the characters are, in any significant way, inferior to the citizens of Poker Flat. Surprisingly, the stereotypical hero, Oakhurst is the only one to fold his cards when the odds get too steep. Brave acts abound amongst the more unlikely heroes. The "innocent" treks to Poker Flat to save his new bride and she, the child, comforts another when her own life is diminishing.

It is appropriate that Bret Harte is studied along with Mark Twain. Although, most critics consider Bret Harte a popular writer and product of the era, he will remain notable for introducing the world to Twain's work. Twain has even cited that he was inspired by Harte's regional fiction and subsequently influenced. Regardless if the novice supplanted the master, Harte's "Outcasts of Poker Flat" has deservedly remained a canonical text.

Boylan has carefully documented both the public and private lives of two almost forgotten socialists of the early 20th century. His book is well written and makes for entertaining reading as well as fine scholarship of an overlooked era in American politics.

The flashback to London and Walker's involvement with British intelligence will touch your heart. And the second divorce trial is hysterical.
