Lost Secrets of the Poultry Masters! In this engaging, practical book, Robert Plamondon describes how to raise baby chicks, using brooder-house techniques that, though now largely forgotten, were once used on millions of American farms. Anyone can raise baby chicks successfully by following these simple, proven methods. Robert Plamondon keeps a flock of 600 free-range hens on his farm in Blodgett, Oregon. His wife Karen Black raises 2,000 pastured broilers a year.
Customer Reviews:
Success with Baby Chicks.......2007-05-13
Covers all the basics. I especially liked the day by day instructions.
Well done.
It doesn't get any clearer than this!.......2003-03-22
Robert Plamondon has packed more great information about chick brooding into this book than can be found in any other current "how to" poultry book. The author combines his own chick brooding experiences with still valuable material from out-of-print poultry books, and shows the reader how to apply it using new technology. It is well illustrated with both old and new photos. This book is a must have if you want to raise chicks. I wish it had been available when I first started, but I have it now!
Best book on brooding chicks.......2003-03-22
It's about time someone compiled a book on how to brood chickens properly. Robert took his many years of experience and knowledge, and also his old library of out of print books and compiled a very detailed yet concise book that will help you have the greatest success or improve your past success to a higher level. I would recommend this book to anyone who is brooding chicks in numbers from 10 to 100,000. Thanks Robert for putting together this information.
Great Advice from a Trustworthy Source.......2003-03-22
Plamondon raises chickens and eggs at his successful Oregon pastured poultry operation. He is also a respected member of the internet poultry mail groups.
He has gleaned the best of the past--tried and true information--the almost lost "Secrets of the Past Poultry Masters".The Ohio Brooder plans alone are worth the price of the volume. The guidelines are suitable for all climates and breeds.
The book is strong on up-to-date nutritional and disease control information, and explainations of what does and does not work.
Easy to understand charts and illustrations help the novice and experienced poultry person to grasp the concepts. Plamondon writes in an easy to read, engaging style.
Highly recommended!
Well Written & Informative.......2003-03-22
...His helpful responses to questions were always well reasoned, clear and factual... So I was pleased to see that he had put together the results of his research and experiences in one place.
Most of the information presented is also available elsewhere, but this is so well written that I found it to be a page turner. I only wish he had included an index.

Book Description
This new book deals with the construction of finite-difference (FD) algorithms for three main types of equations: elliptic equations, heat equations, and gas dynamic equations in Lagrangian form. These methods can be applied to domains of arbitrary shapes. The construction of FD algorithms for all types of equations is done on the basis of the support-operators method (SOM). This method constructs the FD analogs of main invariant differential operators of first order such as the divergence, the gradient, and the curl. This book is unique because it is the first book not in Russian to present the support-operators ideas. Conservative Finite-Difference Methods on General Grids is completely self-contained, presenting all the background material necessary for understanding. The book provides the tools needed by scientists and engineers to solve a wide range of practical engineering problems. An abundance of tables and graphs support and explain methods. The book details all algorithms needed for implementation. A 3.5" IBM compatible computer diskette with the main algorithms in FORTRAN accompanies text for easy use.

This affecting story of an English couple's struggle to keep their love alive despite the damage inflicted by the husband's years as a POW reminds us that real-life traumas are more terrible and less easily resolved than those in war movies. Beautiful, vivacious Pamela Kirrage and quiet, intense RAF pilot Donald Hill fell in love in March 1939, less than four months before Donald was shipped out to Singapore. Captured during the fall of Hong Kong, he spent three and a half years in a Japanese camp, where he subsisted on miniscule rations and saw his companions tortured and killed for their part in an underground operation he had also joined. He recorded his experiences in an encoded diary that came to symbolize for Pamela, who married him in 1946, the crippling sorrows he was unable to share with her. The psychological legacy of Donald's imprisonment, particularly his fits of anger and emotional distance, prompted the Hills to quarrel and Pamela to drink. Unable to live together, miserable apart, they divorced in 1978, but remarried a year before Donald's death in 1985. Only when a British mathematician finally cracked the secret code of Donald's diary (keyed to the letters in his and Pamela's names) in 1996 could she wholly understand his private hell. Veteran nonfiction author Andro Linklater ably interweaves three distinct stories: Pamela and Donald's star-crossed romance, the tragic drama of his wartime suffering and endurance, and the gripping, step-by-step adventure of cracking the diary's code. His sad, moving book acknowledges the agony of a generation haunted by wartime horrors it could never discuss, while honoring the power of love to assuage, if not eliminate, emotional pain. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
For fifty years, Pamela Kirrage longed to unlock the secrets of her husband’s encrypted war diary. She was on the verge of giving up when she at last found a mathematician who became as obsessed with learning the secrets of the diary as she was. After months of painstaking investigation, he was finally able to crack the code, and in the process uncover the ending to an extraordinary World War II romance.
Pamela fell in love with RAF pilot Donald Hill in the summer of 1939, just a few months before he was sent to fight in Pacific. Although they planned to marry soon, Donald was captured after siege of Hong Kong and spent the next four years in a Japanese POW camp. Donald ultimately returned to Pamela, but he was never able to tell her about those lost years–and Pamela became convinced that the key to their happiness lay within the mysterious diary he brought back from the war. In
The Code of Love Andro Linklater uses the decoded diary as well as extensive research and interviews to paint a vivid portrait of the World War II era, turning this dramatic love story into an inspiring, unconventional epic.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the Best.......2001-03-27
This is simply the best book I have read in a long time.
Andro Linklater writes clearly and eloquently about the love affair between Pamela Kirrage and Donald Hill at the eve of World War II. He brings to life the great excitement of their budding romance and the long, difficult years they spent apart, Pamela doing her part to support England's war efforts at home and Donald languishing in a Japanese concentration camp.
The atrocities that Donald experienced are described in a matter of fact manner that does not take away from the sheer horror of what he must have endured. He was determined to document what happened in the camp at the risk of his own life and eventually coded his diary to ensure that it would not be discovered. Through it all, his promise to return to Pamela gave him the will to survive.
Years later after Donald's death, Pamela resolved to know the contents of his diary so she could understand what had happened to him, what had happened to them. I found the efforts to decode his diary just as fascinating as the turbulent relationship between Pamela and Donald.
This is an intelligent and articulate account of two passionate people caught up in the throes of war and their struggle to regain their lives and relationship once reunited. It is a romance, a war history, and a mystery all rolled into one.
I am recommending it to everyone I know. Read it!
A true tear jerker!.......2001-03-20
Pamela Kirrage and Donald Hill were very much in love and living in England right before the outbreak of World War II. Donald was sent overseas and spent three and a half years in a Japanese prison camp. He was never the same after the war, but tried to live a normal life with Pamela and their children.
David kept a diary during his imprisonment, but no one could crack the code until years after Donald's death, when Pamela found a mathematician who solved the mystery.
This book tells Donald and Pamela's sad, but moving story of true love, the horrors of war and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.
Book Description
Beautifully crafted stories of psychotherapy-told for the first time from the perspective of the therapist In her long career as a psychotherapist, acclaimed author Lillian Rubin occasionally encountered patients who demanded a very special, even unorthodox, therapeutic approach. For the first time, Dr. Rubin tells the stories of her most fascinating, most challenging case, "from the other side of the couch," focusing not just on the patient, but on her own inner process as she confronts the issues each case raises. Each of the seven stories she tells is a moving journey into the human psyche, from the secret life of "The Woman Who Wasn't" or the extreme regression of "The White Hat" to the smoldering rage of "The Man with the Beautiful Voice." Through these captivating tales, and in a thought-provoking introduction, Dr. Rubin illuminates the process of therapy and how it works, especially when rules need to be bent or even broken. For anyone who has been in therapy, or even wondered what happens behind those tightly sealed doors, this book offers a gift of insight. "This daring and engrossing book offers a unique gift to readers: a window into the mind and the heart of both sides of the therapeutic relationship-the patient's and the therapist's. Only a writer and thinker as agile as Lillian Rubin could offer such compelling stories that tell us so much about the process of pain and healing for both patient and therapist." -Kim Chernin, author of The Hungry Self Lillian B. Rubin is the author of eleven books including Tangled Lives, Worlds of Pain, Intimate Strangers, and Just Friends. A sociologist and psychotherapist, Dr. Rubin has been a senior research associate at the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in San Francisco.
Customer Reviews:
Seeing the Whole Picture.......2007-02-18
This book gives you an inside view of the therapist-patient relationship from the therapist point of view. It's enlightening to read how the relationship develops and how that impacts the patient's life. You can get a little bit of a feel for how therapy works and what happens. The book does a nice job of juxtaposing the 'rules' of how things are to be done and 'intuition' about how things should be done and the struggle between the two. My favorite chapter was the final one where the author shared her personal experience in therapy and what that relationship meant to her and did for her. A good read for a therapist or a client in therapy.
The book with the beautiful voice.......2006-12-31
Wonderfully real and inspirational reflections of therapeutic sessions with a therapist who seems to have the healing combination of genuineness, authenticity, self- and other-awareness, and the innate desire to really hear and see her clients. The words harmoniously sing from the pages of this book with the chorus repeatedly reminding us that in therapy it is indeed the relationship that heals.
Beautifully crafted short stories.......2004-07-23
Dr Rubin's stories are drawn from her clinical practice and her experience with her patients. The reader meets Eve Gordon who endured a harrowing childhood with her alcoholic parents; now 39, she lives a life of virtual isolation and desperately wants to become her therapist's friend. Many sessions are spent with Eve curled up in the corner of the practice without uttering a single word. Bruce Marins, a cripple - a "Thalidomide baby", a drug taken by his mother to cure her morning sickness - who rejects sympathy as being patronising, who feels anger and distrust of people around him and who sees deceit, pity and rejection wherever he turns. As Dr Rubin is about to greet Bonnie Paulsen and Jerry Stillman in her office, she is far from picturing the way these two patients are going to deceive her with their egregious lies and carefully plotted hoax - "How easily any patient can defeat even the most artful and accomplished therapist." she writes! Jake Garvin suffers from manic-depressive psychosis and so needs help because he's having trouble writing his dissertation for his degree. This is all the more urgent since the two job offers Jake has received depend on his finishing his dissertation. A case which will unfortunately end very tragically. Richard Durbin and Valerie Goldner are a yuppie couple. But why does Richard stubbornly refuse to have a child with Valerie? What mysterious event in his past makes him refuse to become a father? And finally there is the case of Delfina Ortega, a Mexican American, who was pregnant at 16, then became an excellent high school student graduating near the top of her class, who was subsequently awarded full scholarship to the university and then, when she was accepted to a graduate programme in Latin American history, she falls into a panic attack.
Dr Rubin's cases are a wonderful read for those of us who are mere laymen in the field of psychology.
Five Stars.......2003-07-02
Dr. Rubin explains that there are a set of rules regarding the relationship between a patient and doctor and how she sometimes broke the rules to help her patients. She shows the soul-searching and thought processes that go into the decision to break the rules by describing interactions with some of her patients. She does a great job of describing these cases, building the tension for the reader who is wondering why the patient has come in for therapy; there is always a big payoff when the secret trauma suffered by each patient is revealed. This is a very short book and I found myself wishing it was longer. I could easily read 400 pages + of these gripping stories. The human drama never ceases to be interesting and the author has a talent for writing in simple yet artistic prose.

Book Description
The recent impeachment has sparked a resurgence of interest in Andrew Johnson. America’s seventeenth president came to office at the end of the tumultuous Civil War. In spite of a successful political career spanning five decades, Johnson was one of the most unpopular and unsuccessful of all American presidents. Johnson was the subject of considerable historical controversy, and his conservative stand on nearly every social and political issue altered the course of Reconstruction. A president worth getting to know, Andrew Johnson was:
the only senator from a Confederate state to remain in Congress during the Civil War
the only president to receive no formal schooling
the only president to be reelected to the Senate after his presidency
the first president to be impeached. This illustrated A-to-Z encyclopedia provides carefully selected entries covering the people, events, and concepts relevant to Johnson’s life. Also includes chronology and index.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent synopsis of characters involved.......2006-03-05
This biographical guide to the life of Andrew Johnson consists of an introductory biographical sketch, short biographies of the people involved in his political and personal life, historical documents, a chronology, and a bibliography. The book consists of the articles, which are arranged alphabetically and include references to other articles in the work and to outside sources. The articles are well written and contain short explanations of each subject and a brief bio of characters of the period. The book depicts Johnson as a hard headed, self-educated man whose unwillingness to compromise his principles led him into conflict with the radical Republicans over Reconstruction, i.e. whether punishment of southern whites and catering to slaves or getting the South back on its feet were the primary objectives of the Feds. This volume treats Andrew Johnson as a complex man and a president and does a fairly good job of explaining the "sign of the times". One gets the impression from the book that to avoid the conflicts of reconstruction a 20/20 hindsite solution would have been to give the slaves a new start in the vast federal unsettled lands and a grub stake to separate them from their former owners and poor whites, thus avoiding a fight over the scraps left by the Civil War. Of course then as now, most politicans are more interested in looking out for number one, relatives and friends. Many of the problems concerning the Constitution and governing are better understood by reading this book, which is an excellent read! The editorial reviews are very consistent with the book; however, I do not agree that the book is only for the scholars. Anyone interested in how the Civil War came about would want to read "John C. Calhoun, American Portrait" by Margaret L. Coit, a Pulitzer Prize winning-biography of 1950, which has been updated and released by the University of South Carolina with some introductory comments by Clyde N. Wilson, the discerning editor of The Papers of John C. Calhoun.

Marilyn's memoir is a colorful account of raising a family on an Alaskan fishing boat that begins in 1946 with Marilyn's transformation from an Iowa farm girl into a seasoned fisherman. She interweaves history, the beauty of the country, the wildlife, the friendships and the challenges with the happy times afloat. The 133 photos capture her family's uniique lifestyle.
Customer Reviews:
Hope that there is a sequel!!!.......2004-10-01
My husband and I had just spent a number of fascinating days exploring The Pan Handle of Alaska (Southeast Alaska)-Which included-a number of communities that are only reached by boat or plane, as well as gliding among the ice floats in an area called Tracy's Arm to view a large glacier. When we landed in Petersberg we visited the museum and met Marilyn Jordan George. We could not resist buying her book; Following The Alaskan Dream.
We have both read it and have both thoroughly enjoyed it. The author gives you a detailed account of how life was lived during her days of salmon trolling in Southeast Alaska. Marilyn recounts the good-times and the trials of raising a family living on a boat, while salmon trolling with her husband, Skip Jordan.
It was most gratifying to read and enjoy a book that represents how positive thinking and a zest for life can give you such great pleasure. I was very sorry it ended---and hoped that there will be a sequel. Eliot Marshall/Klatzkin-Yardley, Pa.
Pure Pleasure.......2004-10-01
I bought this book at a book-signing Marilyn was having at Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center in Alaska. I was was there on a side trip from a cruise ship, and it was my lucky day. Marilyn autographed it for me, and I took it back to the ship - where it hardly left my hands for the balance of the cruise, and on the plane home. What a great book! Reading this account of Marilyn's early life with her husband in Alaska is like becoming a part of her family. You suffer with them when they don't find fish, and rejoice with them when the year is good. You see in your mind's eye the beauty of Alaskan waters, and can almost smell the salty air as they hunt the elusive salmon. You rejoice in the birth of each child, and marvel at their life aboard a small fishing boat. You live with them in the tiny cabin they build on land. Written in the first person, Marilyn brings you to Alaska and into her family with a wealth of details, and with a skill and honesty to be admired. The book deserves every one of it's Five Stars rating. Do yourself a favor and buy it for some long weekend when you want a really good read. You will not regret it!
A Wonderful Life.......2003-01-21
Besides telling the not-to-be-put-down story of her life, the author has created a historical document of southeastern Alaska, including the changes that occured during her many years there. The book is also a source of inspirational quotations which embody the Alaskan spirit. Marilyn Jordan George is a multitalented person; I am glad she penned her life story.
Experience life on a fishing boat.......2002-02-20
Vivid portrayal of southeast Alaska's vanishing fishing industry. Sharing the author's lifetime of experiences I could almost feel salt spray in my face. A must-read for anyone who has lived in this beautiful country, has visited there, or dreams of Alaska.
What an Adventure.......2001-12-19
Marilyn literally takes you aboard with her and her family. I almost got sea sick. LOL Marilyn is articulate and tells it like it is. She doesn't sugar coat the unfortunate happenings. You will laugh, you will cry and you will get angry at certain characters. All in all a wonderful read.

An unusual political biography.......2002-05-18
Ordinarily political biography is long on the public lives of its subjects, and skimpy on the private lives, no doubt because when a political figure deposits his or her "papers" with some library or institution he or she deposits only those papers pertaining to the public or political life. This entrancing study relies on the personal letters of not only Fighting Bob LaFollette and his wife but the letters of their four children. The book follows their private lives and reflects their public lives as they affected their private lives. Thus we get a much more intimate look at the lives of the famed LaFollette family, including all four of the children: Senator Robert F. LaFollette, Jr., Governor Phil LaFollette, and the two daughters. This is a study of a very political family from a standpoint such as I never have read before. It is a highly interesting work
a well researched piece.......1999-11-24
Weisberger's book is well researched and politically accurate. A wonderful portrait of the La Follettes. Captivating.

A devoted boyhood admirer of Fighting Bob LaFollette, I've become, since reading this marvelous memoir, a grey-haired admirer of Belle.
-- Studs Terkel
"Before the Kennedys, before the Roosevelts, there was another great and determined liberal family. Among its members was Belle Case LaFollette, wife of Robert LaFollette, Sr., and a true pioneer on everything from woman's suffrage to worker's rights to keeping the warriors at bay. I enjoyed the book immensely and learned much."

Chronicles the tragedy of junk science in action.......2004-08-23
This book takes the reader into the family of the author, whose father had been accused by the author's adult sister of abusing her as a child. The allegations of abuse arose from the sister's counseling sessions with an unethical and manipulative psychologist in Washington State--himself a sexual predator and who finally lost his license as a result of his actions. (My one criticism of the book is that the psychologist is apparently not named with his true name. Such people need to be publically named so that others might not be hurt by them.)
The author explores the devastating impact the false accusations had upon the whole family, and she takes us through the process that each family member went through in coming to the conclusion that the accusations were in fact false.
Anyone affected by this "recovered memory" phenomenon, which is considered "junk science" by many people both in and outside the field of psychology, will find this book an encouragement as they struggle with the impact of these iatrogenic accusations on their own family and friends.
