5 out of 5 stars Great reference book for cheese.......2006-03-23

I first came across the title of this book in my local newspaper in an article written by Pam Freir. It caught my attention immediately as my daughter and I enjoy trying new types of cheese. So I thought to give this book to her as a gift. It proved to be an excellent choice and we now enjoy cheese even more knowing the history, geography and technology behind the making of this extraordinary food.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy great cheeses of the world........2000-05-23

I got this book because I have been traveling to Europe and eating several chesses. I wanted to learn more and share this wonderful food with my family and friends. This book is just what I was looking for! It has wonderful pictures and to the point discriptions. A great book for anyone who likes cheese. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compendium of cheese varieties.......2000-04-30

This book does a great job of reviewing cheeses from around the world. It is entertaining to read and very informative. There are good quality photos of each of the cheeses, detailed description with history, anecdotes, wine recommendations, fat composition and occasionally a recipe. This book is more for learning about cheeses than about cooking with cheeses. The size of the book is small enough that you can inconspicuously take it to your local cheese shop and use it as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful and Informative.......2000-01-12

As an American who has travelled Europe extensively and LOVES cheese (and wine!), I was delighted to find this book in English which fills us in on all the background info about all these cheeses. It is very well researched and sophisticated in its selection. This book will make your mouth water.

            Book Description

Analytic K-homology draws together ideas from algebraic topology, functional analysis and geometry. It is a tool - a means of conveying information among these three subjects - and it has been used with specacular success to discover remarkable theorems across a wide span of mathematics. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with the essential ideas of analytic K-homology and develop some of its applications. It includes a detailed introduction to the necessary functional analysis, followed by an exploration of the connections between K-homology and operator theory, coarse geometry, index theory, and assembly maps, including a detailed treatment of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem. Beginning with the rudiments of C* - algebra theory, the book will lead the reader to some central notions of contemporary research in geometric functional analysis. Much of the material included here has never previously appeared in book form.

              Book Description

The Atiyah-Singer index theorem is one of the most powerful tools for relating geometry, analysis, and topology. In its original form, however, it applies only to compact manifolds. This book describes a version of index theory which works for noncompact spaces with appropriate control, such as complete Riemannian manifolds. The relevant "control" is provided by the large scale geometry of the space, and basic notions of large scale geometry are developed.

Index theory for the signature operator is related to geometric topology via surgery theory. And, paralleling the analytic development, "controlled" surgery theories for noncompact spaces have been developed by topologists. This book explores the connections between these theories, producing a natural transformation from surgery to "analytic surgery".

The analytic foundations of the work come from the theory of $C^*$-algebras, and the properties of the $C^*$-algebra of a coarse space are developed in detail.

The book is based on lectures presented at a conference held in Boulder, Colorado, in August 1995 and includes the author's detailed notes and descriptions of some constructions that were finalized after the lectures were delivered.

Dale J Bingham's In the Arms of a Stranger is a touching and moving account of his career as a paramedic. From his early days in Southern California to his work as a Tulsa, Oklahoma paramedic, he gives an inside look at the rewards, the trials, and the heartaches that emergency workers face everyday. In between he writes of his own struggles with a difficult career and of tragically losing his own mother to the very part of life he worked so hard to conquer. In the Arms of a Stranger will tug at the heartstrings of the reader and leave the reader with a greater appreciation for those emergency workers who struggle everyday to help those in need.

                  5 out of 5 stars Short Story.......2005-10-22

This book was really good. Its more like a book with abunch of short stories because every chapter is very diffrent.

3 out of 5 stars From the author.......2004-02-12

This book was simply a collection of stories and memoirs from my career - put into book form to give my children something to know about their father. Never intended for wide readership, it is nonetheless listed through the publisher. While somewhat unrefined, if you choose to read please understand that EMS is a harsh business, what is defined as excitement early in a career oftens fades and is replaced by more of a deep caring for the individuals that we serve. "Blood and guts" never was and never will be my thing. This is not action packed and thrilling. I apologize to those who have found only disappointment with it's purchase. I do not market this book. I do not claim it to be a prize of literary worth. But if you choose to read please read between the lines and understand that we in EMS are in the service of our fellow man. For those in the business, learn to "see" more than injuries and pain. I still believe and always will, that we rarely save many lives, but we impact countless people everyday by our actions and care. If I have learned anything in my career to pass on it is simply this "Learn to love those you serve." Period.

Thank you, Dale J Bingham PA-C, MPAS, BS, NREMTP

                  4 out of 5 stars Hidden gems.......2003-10-04

While this book by Mr Bingham is not destined for the pulitzer prize anytime soon, it is filled with some marvelous pearls, more related to life in general and not simply paramedicine. Having over 20 years in EMS myself I think Mr Bingham has the inside track, though the publisher could definitely use some "editorial" corrections.
Younger medics may not get it, but there is something more profound here. At least that's what I got out of it - I hope that is what Bingham was going for. I found the book cheap to buy and fun to read, though short.
And yes, paramedics can be dumb. I have met hundreds of dumb ones in my career. They usually "shine" -but they shine dim and dull.

4 out of 5 stars Good book. To the point.......2003-02-03

I thought Bingham did a decent job on this book. I can't find anything else by him so it must be his freshman effort. Hopefully there is more to come. I like the way he sees other people and the faults within himself. We are not supermen/women in EMS and very few actually see it that way. This book was short, but I think I got the message of what he was trying to say. Probably could use a little more "picture painting" but it was not a bad effort at all. And inexpensive. Want to read the next edition....if there is one.

4 out of 5 stars short but stocky.......2003-01-31

I really enjoyed this book. Not the longest I have ever read, but it touched on some areas most medics refuse to acknowledge - though we all feel them. If all you want is blood and guts maybe this isn't exactly for you, but I recommend it to learn a little about the business

                  Book Description

Successful Boston politician and real estate developer Joseph F. Timilty was convicted in 1993 of conspiracy to commit fraud, and subsequently served time at the Schuylkill medium security federal penitentiary in Minersville, Pennsylvania. A blend of drama and black comedy, Prison Journal excerpts Timilty's secret diary from that period, providing a rare and intimate look at the day-to-day life of the incarcerated. Intermittently poignant and comical, the journal captures both the monotony and fear of prison life, skewers a hostile and wasteful prison bureaucracy, examines racial and sexual tensions among inmates, and presents an array of unforgettable characters, all imbued with Timilty's ironic Irish wit.

4 out of 5 stars An eye opener.......1999-10-12

I could hardly put the book down. Wonderfully written! A story of nobility and courage amidst a justice system that went awry. The journal entries were a lesson on dignity and fortitude. Along with these lessons of moral character the writings were humorous, inspiring and touching. The most exasperating part of this novel were the countless examples of the senseless monies spent year after year to house non violent 1st offenders. A prison system more concerned about their own jobs rather than the welfare of our country. This book changed my original belief of lock 'em up and throw away the key to that of, the punishment must truly fit the crime.

Timilty is a man of obvious intelligence and ability. He brings his gifts and talents to his experience of incarceration. However, the prison "camp" in which he finds himself is so different from the prisons in which I worked, it was hard to feel compassionate or understanding. Often he mentions the expansive meals as well as the fine equipment available to the inmates. This is truly opposite to the meager, repetitive, unapetizing fare that I've seen served at prison facilities. And exercise yards are functional gyms or walking around the pods, not the tracks and weight rooms Timilty describes. This place was 5-star compared to most facilities. Timilty concludes with some solid points on prison reform although I would wish that he could have included the less well-supplied in his thesis. The best part of the book for me was his description of his fellow inmates as lovable people. That's where I could identify with him.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing! Terrific insights on prison reform needs........1997-11-27

Timilty writes from a career in politics and how he was caught up in an aggressive AG's effort to widen a political dragnet in Beantown. His well written tome (with a fine assist from Boston Globe writer Jack Thomas)moves fast, articulates prison life from the inside and calls for reform in first non-violent sentencing guidelines.

Aptly edited and with an informative introduction for contemporary readers by Kenneth N. Owens, A Tenderfoot In Montana: Reminiscences Of The God Rush, The Vigilantes, And The Birth Of Montana Territory is Frank Thompson's autobiography detailing his experiences in the upper Missouri country at the beginning of the Montana gold rush. Avoiding the Civil War, Thompson had headed west aboard a steamboat from St. Louis in 1862, arriving at Fort Benton (in what would eventually become the Montana Territory) and lived their for two and a half years searching for gold, running a Bannack mercantile business, traveling to the Pacific Coast, serving in Montana's first territorial legislature, and speculating in mining properties. Having a relationship with sheriff Henry Plummer, Thompson draws upon his intimate personal knowledge of one of the deadliest incidents of vigilante justice in American frontier history. A Tenderfoot In Montana is a welcome and informative contribution to 19th Century American Western History Studies collections and highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in how the Montana Territory developed during the mid-1860s.

                      Book Description

Jon-Henri Damski shows why he was one of the first writers in America to come out queer a dozen years ago. In essays which cut across culture, religion and politics, he marks the liberation movement in his own life, from academic, to gay writer, to queer thinker. Introduced by Neal Pollack, who writes: "I didn't always understand everything Jon-Henri said, or everything he wrote. Like his schizo mind, his writing sometimes goes off on odd tangents. Secret shards of knowledge burst out, seemingly disconnected to the previous paragraph. Popular references get knocked off-center by the obscure, by what was unspoken."
