Book Description
This two-volume text provides a comprehensive understanding of key financial and managerial accounting concepts. The organization of the text promotes flexibility, so instructors can reorder subject matter or alter the mix of topics to meet the needs of each individual class-without sacrificing the continuity of the course. Throughout the book, theory and practice are blended with numerous illustrations and examples to enhance student understanding. The first chapter describes the activities of a small business and demonstrates the preparation of a complete set of financial statements. These statements are prepared without the use of debits, credits, accounts, or journal entries. In later chapters, this illustration is repeated to emphasize transaction analysis and the accounting cycle after basic concepts have been explained. The text provides a broad overview of all aspects of accounting -- from the initiation of transactions to the financial statements and special reports. The text focuses on the needs, requirements, and analysis of data by financial statement users.

Book Description
Before World War II, farmers had few of the conveniences that were common in cities. Many farmers continued to milk cows by hand, pump water with windmills or gasoline engines, light their way with kerosene lamps and lanterns, heat with woodstoves, and plant and harvest with horses. And many had no indoor plumbing. After war’s end in 1945, change on the farm came rapidly. Electricity replaced lamps, lanterns, and gasoline engines. New tractors replaced horses. Hay balers made loose hay a memory. Grain combines replaced threshing machines. Not only was farm work transformed from 1945 to 1955, but so was life on farms and in rural communities. Threshing, silo filling, and corn shredding bees, where farmers gathered to help each other, became memories. Card games and neighborly visits were replaced by television. Young people left the land because mechanization required less labor. Large farms crowded out family farms. "Every Farm Tells a Story" is a first-person account of a small Wisconsin farm during and after World War II. This ""living history"" is a collection of true tales inspired by entries in Jerry Apps’s mother’s farm account books. The values recorded in the account books prompt recollections of his childhood and the traditional family farm values and ethics instilled in him by Ma and Pa. About the Author: A professor emeritus of agriculture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, author Jerry Apps has written more than 35 books, many of them on rural history and country life. Recent titles include "When Chores Were Done" and "Humor from the Country." His writing has earned awards from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Library Association, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent! Great for anyone that grew up on a farm........2005-07-23
I really injoyed this book, laughed out loud several times. I really enjoyed all the old farm ads also. Great picture of how farming used to be.
An inviting chronicle of changes in farming over the decades.......2005-06-05
Farm values and management can offer many lessons, especially when told through humor, as Jerry Apps demonstrates in Every Farm Tells A Story; A Tale Of Family Farm Values. Tucked into an inviting chronicle of changes in farming over the decades and resulting changes in values and methods, readers receive a fine blend of business savvy, history, and humor lending to light, easy reading.
A wonderful nostalgic romp, a letter to my cousins........2005-05-18
I have just come across a book you all should read: it is called EVERY FARM TELLS A STORY, A TALE OF FAMILY FARM VALUES, by JERRY APPS. it is published by Voyageur Press and is a wonderful story about growing up on a farm near Wild Rose Wisconsin in Washara County in the north central part of the state. As most of you know, Cousin Tom Larson and I spent a number of summers on the Bergum farm north of Wheeler in Dunn County; and almost everything that Jerry Apps describes in the book is something we did with Uncle Nelmer (who Tom and I still consider the greatest man in the world) and Aunt Selma (our second mother) and Kon and Stanley on that farm: threshing, making wood, cultivating, feeding chickens, stripping cows; old fashioned crank telephones, freeshows, feed mills--everything. The book is illustrated with period advertisments. This is a brilliant nostalgic journey. It's a neat
companion to my own The Reunion. But all of you should take a trip in EVERY FARM. this is a story that speaks to those of us who have had anything to do with farm life. it's a wonderful book for all my cousins and for all of us.

Book Description
During the twentieth century, radiation chemistry emerged as a multi-faceted field encompassing all areas of science. Radiation chemical techniques are becoming increasingly popular and are being routinely used not only by chemists but also by biologists, polymer scientists, etc.
"Radiation Chemistry: Present Status and Future Trends" presents an overall view of the different aspects of the subject. The chapters review the current status of the field and present the future opportunities in utilizing radiation chemical techniques. This will be of interest to chemists in general and in particular to radiation chemists, chemical kineticists, photochemists, physical-organic chemists and spectroscopists.
In view of the diverse nature of the field, the book is a multi-authored effort by several experts in their particular areas of research. Six main areas, both basic and applied, were identified and the book is organized around them. The topics were selected in terms of their relative importance and the contribution of radiation chemistry to the general areas of chemistry, biology and physics. The topics covered are as diverse as gas phase radiation chemistry, the use of radiation chemical techniques, the treatment of water pollutants, the chemical basis of radiation biology, and muonium chemistry. The book also contains an update of the next generation electron accelerators.

Book Description
New insights into the senior command levels of the United States fighting elite. Stories include accounts of men in battles from World War II. This book fills a void in the literature of Marine Corps leadership. Supplying the biographies of the first eleven men to hold the proud title of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Uncommon Men offers new insights into the senior command levels of the United States' fighting elite. This book portrays not only the lives of those pioneers, but also gives us a social history of the Corps since 1942 as only a Marine could tell it. The Sergeants Major of the Marine Corps come from all parts of the country. Chapin reminds us of their humanity, their families, and off-duty friendships and hobbies, and how they rose through the ranks.

Brief bio's for the first 13 Sgt's Maj of the USMC.......1999-08-20
This book in on the USMC Professional reading list, but as a Marine (any rank) you should read this book to gain an understanding of where the top enlisted in our Corps came from. This is not a story. The book contains short biographies that give you insight about the Sergeant's Major of the Marine Corps who set the standard for future Marines. Simply a great source of history for Marines, or those who are interested in our heritage. Semper Fidelis!

Book Description
For over forty years, Aryeh Neier has stood with the vanguard in the struggle for rights. Since joining the staff of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1963, he went on to become the youngest executive director in its history; to found and direct Human Rights Watch-the world's leading rights watchdog organization; and, most recently, to serve as president of the Open Society Institute. In Taking Liberties, Neier recounts this remarkable career. With striking detail and surprising candor, he recalls the persons he has encountered, the struggles in which he has taken part, and what, given the sometimes unintended consequences of these efforts, he might have done differently along the way. The memoir of a movement as well as a life, Taking Liberties offers unparalleled insight into the history of human rights. It is essential reading for anyone interested in international law, human rights, civil liberties, and-from the Guantanamo detentions to the war crimes tribunals-the crucial issues of our day.
Customer Reviews:
Bunch of books in one.......2004-03-14
A bunch of books in one as we see the turbulent litigation of the 60s and 70s from an insider's point of view, then the growth of Human Rights Watch and the important work done in Central America and elsewhere to George Soros' occasionally transformational efforts in former Soviet countries. Refreshingly honest, such as the part where Neier admits that the ACLU's mental health litigation asking for the mentally ill to be released from institutions unwittingly contributed to the homeless crises which continues to this day. I have never heard a liberal admit this, though it is probably true (it's important to admit mistakes to avoid them in the future). The book would have been better with more about Neier's personal life and his personal feelings about triumphs and defeats, but all in all a great insider view of civil liberties litigation, NGO politics, and human rights strategy.

None but Texians: A History of Terry's Texas Rangers
ASIN: 1880510456 |
Book Description
The ten companies of the Terry Texas Rangers were officially activated into the Confederate Army as the 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment, but throughout the Civil War they were known by the name of their first commander, Col. Benjamin F. Terry, who fell at the battle of Woodsonville. In over 200 battles including Shiloh, Bardstown, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chichamauga and Knoxville, they gave credence to Gen. John B. Hood's remark that there was "no body of cavalry superior." When the South finally surrendered, there were scarcely enough men left to form one company. This volume of vivid descriptions, of the first-hand experiences of men in the ranks throughout the duration of the war, makes available three of the rarest pieces of Texana concerning the Terry Texas Rangers' role in the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Texas Civil War Trilogy.......2006-11-05
I have been interested in Civil War history and wanted to read about Terry's Rangers since they came from the part of Texas I live in. This trilogy further reinforces how poorly equipped many of the Southern troops were and how much of their time was foraging the land for food, water, and horses. This was a good book.
Wonderful Collection Of First Person Accounts.......2000-12-21
This book is a must have for anyone interested in Terry's Texas Rangers (8th Texas Cavalry). It contains three rare first person accounts of the Ranger's activities during the Civil War including the diary of Ephraim Dodd who was unjustly hung as a spy by Federal troops. There are also several photos and an excellent introduction by Thomas Cutrer. I highly recommend it.

A Good thing in a small package.......2006-06-05
It is interesting to me that a short book such as this illuminates as much about the Kennedy administration than many thicker books for popular reading. A main difference is that the more popular readings focus on sensational stories and some try to make unsupported connections between some aspect of the political figure's personal development and that person's decisions while in office.
This short political biography ignores the bed sheet and fashion stories that dominate so many other Kennedy books. This is a book for a person with a serious interest in the Kennedy presidency. Despite its brevity, the author gives a strong presentation on the president's political style and his influence on domestic and foreign affairs. His discussion on Kennedy's significant domestic policies is of particular importance since, except for civil rights, JFK is better remembered for his foreign policies.
The writer without engaging in Peggy Noonan-like glorification of his subject (Noonan writes on Reagan) portrays JFK as a highly intelligent and astute figure developing more into a statesman than a politician.
Unfortunately, Kennedy's legacy was long ago hijacked by those who want to minimize his influence by remembering him as a youthful charmer with little substance. This is done by both conservatives (who are angered both by his civil rights efforts and his growing independence of military), and by liberals (who too are angered by his civil rights positions that moved too slowly for their taste and his general refusal to put the cart of the liberal agenda ahead of the national horse). As a result, most discussions of Kennedy center on matters that had little to do with him as the nation's leader.
Many of us (for me as a child) remember him and know him as a person whose death was very personal and traumatic. It was the first time many of us saw our parents and teachers cry. This book helps us to better explain to younger generations Kennedy's importance to the nation and to ourselves.
The Journal of a College Freshman.......2000-04-19
Burner wrote this biography upon previous works written about Kennedy. He admires Kennedy a lot because he doesn't really give any shortcomings that came about while Kennedy was President. Burners does give a clear picture about the events taking place in the book.

Frightening.......2007-09-10
Hartl's story of her "crazy" father is as frightening as it is original. I agree with the previous comment that the book could use a good editing, but also must say that this story should be read by manic-depressives everywhere. --chris palmer, author of VOICES BEYOND THE STREAM
Intriguing but difficult read.......2003-07-27
The story is compelling enough. Grammar problems and repetition make for a bit of a problem at times. The editor must have been on vacation. The author also makes a generalizing mistake in the end, yes, her father is mentally ill and violent, but not all mentally ill are violent...There definitly is a problem when someone like her father gets released time and again with no help, but that doesn't mean we should throw away the key with all mentally ill people.
