Great for the environment.......2007-07-25
Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.
I now have a composting toilet behind the house.......2007-06-21
This was our primary source material for building and maintaining our composting toilet. Works great, saves on water, makes for good plant food, and only smells like sawdust inside.
WOW!!.......2007-05-12
This book combines humor, biology, humor, facts, humor, and specific instructions. Did I mention humor? ;-)
It is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author points out that we are one of the few countries that defecate in our drinking water.
We now have two composting toilets. The one we spent over a $1000 for before we bought the book and the $50 one we built after we bought the book. Guess which one is easier to deal with?!
Everyone should read this!.......2007-03-12
Wonderful book that I wish everyone would read. Great information.
Insightful and well grounded book.......2007-03-10
The author created a masterpiece with this book, combining his vast experience of producing humanure with scientific insight, and great humor which made the book fun to read. I'm convinced that composting manure is the safest way to safely deal with our own excrement. Our society has got to be crazy to be flushing this immensely valuable resource to be dealt with later as it ends up polluting our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. I highly recommend this book to any concious reader who would like to greatly reduce their impact upon this earth.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive treatise on the chemical and biochemical consequences of damaging free radical reactions, the implications for the pathogenesis of disease and how this might be controlled endogenously and by radical scavenging drugs. Oxidative stress may be influenced by exogenous agents of oxidative stress, radiation, trauma, drug activation, oxygen excess, or by exogenous oxidative stress which is associated with many pathological states including chronic inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, injury to the central nervous system, and connective tissue damage. This and many other such aspects are presented clearly and in depth.
The development of antioxidant drugs depends on the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the generation of excessive free radicals
in vivo, the factors controlling their release and the site of their action. This excellent volume presents an up-to-date account of the current state of knowledge in these areas.

Product Description
This monograph provides novel insights into cognitive mechanisms underlying the processing of sound and music in different environments. A solid understanding of these mechanisms is vital for numerous technological applications such as for example information retrieval from distributed musical databases or building expert systems. In order to investigate the cognitive mechanisms of music perception fundamentals of hearing psychophysiology and principles of music perception are presented. In addition, some computational intelligence methods are reviewed, such as rough sets, fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks, decision trees and genetic algorithms. The applications of hybrid decision systems to problem solving in music and acoustics are exemplified and discussed on the basis of obtained experimental results.
Customer Reviews:
Small book with a few good insights though limited.......2007-07-29
as the author complains by lack of personal source material. Buford died during the war, had no surviving children, didn't write any kind of memoirs etc... Longacre did a solid job of discussing the union cavalry command but many aspects of the book like sections on Gettysburg and West Point seemed rushed. Certainly many other commanders had nice things to say about Buford unfortunately Longacre only found 1 or 2 of them.
Good biography of one of the Civil War's best cavalry leaders.......2007-06-25
John Buford is perhaps best known for his aggressive actions on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. However, he merits more consideration than for one day's worth of sound generalship. This book does a good, solid job of introducing readers to General Buford.
Although born in Kentucky, he later moved to what was to become Rock Island, Illinois. In the late 1840s, he entered West Point and graduated in good standing. Some of those whom he came into contact with at "The Point" included Ambrose Burnside, George Stoneman, George Steuart, William Jones, John Tidball, and Hugh Ewing (William Tecumseh Sherman's foster brother). In the "old Army," he was a trooper, including serving in "Bleeding Kansas" and into the Valley of the Saints, as the United States aimed to chastise the Mormons.
As the Civil War began, Buford was assigned to administration, although he wanted to be "in the saddle" as an active cavalry officer. After considerable frustration, he earned an active command. He did good service before Second Manassas/Bull Run, trying to alert General Pope of Longstreet's advance through Thoroughfare Pass, threatening Pope's flank. Alas! The significant intelligence never found its way to the right people. Indeed, this illustrates one of Buford's strength--gathering and passing on crisp intelligence (one function of the cavalry was to serve as "the eyes" of the army). However, later, he was consigned once more to administrative work.
When Joe Hooker became commander of the Army of the Potomac, Buford's luck changed again, as he was given an active command. After the debacle at Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee began his raid northward. Here, Buford played a key role. First, in gathering intelligence. Second, for his role at Brandy Station, when his cavalry put great pressure on one wing of JEB Stuart's cavalry, beginning to tarnish the reputation of the irrepressible Stuart's command.
Then, on to Gettysburg, where he arrived on June 30, assessed the land and the military features around the village, and decided to make a fight of it, fully realizing that his two cavalry brigades were facing Early's corps moving south toward Gettysburg from Carlisle and York and Hill's corps moving east along the Chambersburg Pike. As everyone knows, he held long enough for John Reynolds Union First and O. O. Howard's 11th Corps to arrive and join the battle.
After, Buford continued his good work, although he would face reverses as he pursued Lee's retreating army. Once the Army of the Potomac re-entered Virginia, he continued to play a role. However, illness cut short his career.
All in all, a useful biography of a figure who deserves to be better known. Indeed, the author originally refused the offer to write this book, because he did not think that there was enough information to do a competent biography. Readers ought to be appreciative that Longacre's assessment was wrong.
A Good Summary.......2005-08-02
Edward Longacre's "General John Buford" is good summary of General Buford's career. It is written in straight forward language and is therefore an easy read. Anyone who has a strong interest in the American Civil War probably is familiar with Gen. Buford through such works as the book "Killer Angels" and the movie "Gettysburg". Longacre's book provides much desired pre-civil war and civil war background information. He does interpolate a certain amount of descriptive coloring, but as an attempt to get a feel for the subjective qualities of the man this is not necessarily a bad thing. One could always hope for more detail and information, but Longacre does an admirable job with the available resources.
Thank goodness for the movie.......2005-07-08
Yes, thank goodness for the movie, Gettysburg since without that movie, this fine and very needed biography on General John Buford may never been written or published. The movie brought forward General Buford's finest day as a soldier and this biography bring forward the real man behind the Hollywood image.
Its appears that writing a biography on Buford may have been a problem due to lack of first hand material. Its appears that Buford was not a writer or many of it did not survived. But what comes out from Longacre's book is story of a decent and highly motivated man who took the long road to Gettysburg. His premature death probably robbed him of greater Civil War fame since he have proved to be one of the best cavalry commanders within the Army of the Potomac by the time Gettysburg came about. What he could have done if he lived would be one of the great "what if" of Civil War trivia.
Longacre's book is bit short on Buford's early life, lacking material would be my guess on this short coming. But the author was successful in bring out Buford's early military career, thus doing justice the subtitle of this book, "Military Biography".
Only part I am not sure on Longacre's account was his take on where Buford and General John Reynold's initially met on that first day of Gettysburg. Most well known and movie take would be at the Lutheran Seminary Cupola where that most quote "The Devil's to Pay" came out. Although the actual words may be questioned, I don't exactly buy the author's contention that the first meeting came about in the town of Gettysburg. Why would Buford be there, away from a crucial battle? This was based on civilian eye witnesses, of course the same type of civilians even today who can't tell the difference between a new born 2nd LT and a three star general!!
Other then that, this book proves to be quite readable, nicely researched and quite informative on the life of John Buford. This is the only biographical material I have read on Buford outside of that booklet I brought at Gettysburg back in 1995 written by Michael Phipps and John S. Peterson titled "The Devil's To Pay".
Not bad from Longacre.......2004-01-21
I had high expectations for this book and I must admit that I am disappointed. I agree that this was well researched but I must say that I could not read more than a couple of pages before putting it down and doing something else. A couple of things Longacre lacks, and possibly this is from a lack of primary source material, is a weak background of the Union General. We learn little about where he was born, what his young life entailed, and most importantly who his family was. We also get a mediocre summary of his involvement at Gettysburg, the most important campaign in his military career. I think Longacre could have went deeper. He should have discussed the first day in more depth, and perhaps compare/contrast Buford's character with the one portrayed in the movie "Gettysburg."
But overall I would recommend this book to anyone simply because it is the only biography out there on Buford. I think you do get a sense of who the General was and how he commanded and respected his men. I just wish it was better written.
Book Description
Although married four times, Julia Ruuttila claimed that the love of her life was not a man but a union. From her Industrial Workers of the World origins to the CIO, the International Woodworkers of America, and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, she stuck to unions throughout her long and vibrant life. A well known labor activist and journalist in the Pacific Northwest, Ruuttila chose the picket sign and the typewriter as her chief weapons. She possessed a tireless passion for workers and their struggles, whether founding a committee to free the last Wobbly prisoner from the Centralia Tragedy, leading the Ladies' Auxiliary of the IWA during an eight-and-a-half month lockout, or coming before the House Un-American Activities Committee. At the same time, her everyday hardships were not unlike many other working class women of her era: abusive husbands, illegal abortions, poverty, and single motherhood. In the premier title of Palgrave Macmillan's new oral history series, Ruuttila's remarkable story unfolds in her own words, with author Sandy Polishuk skillfully placing the narrative in its historical context and pointing out where other sources conflict with Ruuttila's account. Sticking to the Union provides a much needed woman's perspective on American labor history of the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Fighting on a Different Front.......2004-06-06
Author Sandy Polishuk reflects the determined efforts of her subject Julia Ruuttila - people who fight for their beliefs with little reward but the satisfaction gained from doing something right. The plight of working people is keenly felt as Ruuttila recounts the suffering at the hands of mill owners and indifferent public officials. Some things don't change. Whether you're a logger whose job is gone because companies decided to overcut forests, a tech employee whose job has gone overseas, or a retiree whose lost savings filled the pockets of self-serving CEOs, we all have lessons to learn from Polishuk's book and Ruuttila's story. It's a startling insight into our past, and a sober vision of our future. This is oral history at its best and most respectful.
Sticking to the Union is a delight!.......2004-01-28
Sticking to the Union is a delight! Ms. Polishuk definitely has a gift for making Julia Ruuttila's words sing, and I very much appreciate her journalistic attention to detail with respect to the places where the oral history diverges from recorded history. Viewing the immensely important Pacific Northwest labor movement through Julia's eyes with Sandy Polishuk as a guide is like a well-crafted gourmet meal. Delicious, satisfying, nourishing, and extremely educational!
Story of a Radical.......2004-01-03
Julia Ruuttila was never scared of "Sticking to the Union". She lived her life sticking up for the underdog and protesting what she saw wrong in the system. Small, spunky Julia told her own version of events. Sandy Polishuk carefully and respectfully corrects the stories. "The transcript of the interview [with the FBI] reveals that Julia's responses during the interview were less heroic than her recollection." Ms. Polishuk offers enlightening context, real knowledge of radicals and clear, concise writing. This book is a fascinating account of a radical woman willing to protest. What a wonderful way for a reader to learn history. I highly recommend "Sticking to the Union".
What a life!.......2003-12-07
Julia Ruuttila's life was amazing! And Sandy Polishuk has done a great job bringing her life to the page. The best part is the book is it's totally engaging and then you realize you've learned a ton of history about twentieth century activism (peace, labor, civil rights, birth control, women's rights etc.)at the same time.
While this book was written for adults, my teenage son read it too and loved it! He couldn't resist it because I was raving about it almost from the first page.
A Fascinating Book!.......2003-11-14
If you've ever wondered whether "just one person" could have an impact on history, read the story of Julia Ruuttila. Her lifelong activism shaped and changed the lives of many people in the Pacific Northwest and her personal courage in the face of hardship is truly inspiring. The author lets Julia's voice speak out from the pages, while also offering the reader helpful background information to understand the context of each situation. This is a truly fascinating book.

Book Description
George Francis Train was, among other things, the real Phileas Fogg: capitalist, communist, royalist, revolutionary, genius, lunatic, visionary prophet, pacifist, warmonger, presidential aspirant, and later, candidate for dictator of the United States, railroad pioneer, writer, and, ultimately, an eccentric. In July 1890, George Train set out on one of the most famous journeys ever made, traveling around the world in 80 days and finding himself immortalized two years after his return in Jules Verne's famous story as Phileas Fogg. This book details Train's incredible undertaking and chronicles his amazing life and times, including the story of how he was falsely accused of stealing 2 million during the gold rush in Australia and then offered the presidency of the Australian Republic.

If I did not already know that George's life was actually this dramatic and exciting, I would surely not beleive it was possible. And the Author has really done his homework!! Remarkably accurate from the usual rumor and story about this often misunderstood former statesman....I ought to know...George Francis Train is my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather's Cousin :)

Very Special Teacher and Very good writer.......2006-02-17
Rebecca merriman was my High School teacher at one time. I read her book and was touched by it. She is a special lady. True to the heart. very helpful to others. Shes an inspiration to me. I love you rebecca.
What a journey of a journaler!.......2003-03-05
If there is any book that shows how keeping a journal can save your life, it is WRITING OUT THE STORM. Yes, it's a hard one to read, yet Rebecca Mitchell Merriman's enthusiasm for life & her attention to detail shine through. Yes, it is full of the angst & turmoil of mental illness, yet embedded in each & every chapter are the kernels of redemption & surcease, until she can no longer control her illness.
That Rebecca Mitchell Merriman survived to tell her tale, with a lot of help from the steady companionship of her husband & their feline offspring, is undoubtedly the result of her untutored discipline at writing out her storm & the restorative power of spirit. She has gone through her trial by fire & lived to tell of it.
Very well done, both for the book & the mental disease survived!
Helped me to understand and be understanding........2002-04-19
Rebecca's book helped me to better understand the manic-depressive people in my life. The journal style gave (me)the reader a day to day view of life as a manic-depressive person. Her story is insightful, honest, heart wrenching, but also uplifting.
Rebecca's story helped me to understand that being manic-depressive is an illness, but that a ill person can still determine a path of health for their life.
A Personal Note re: Writing Out the Storm.......2001-12-20
Rebecca, I can't tell you how much insight I've gained through your beautiful, genuine, poetic words into the state of mind of family members and friends who suffer from mental illness. For many years, sufferers have gravitated to me because they seem to sense that I understand their plight and have compassion for them, having grown up in a family afflicted with a range of chemical imbalances.
Often, I've been deeply wounded by the words and choices that those closest to me who are operating from various platforms of mental distress have leveled at me. But, after reading your book which so eloquently and precisely states and chronicles your mood swings and behavioral variances, I now better realize how insignificant my external role has been in evoking negative responses from affected loved ones. What a relief for me, as one standing on the outside of this illness looking in, to discover through your account how the internal chemical triggers work in determining the subsequent behavior. From your revealing journal entries, I could clearly discern that your choices were chemically, not morally determined or driven. Also, what a comfort it was for me to hear you speak lovingly about those in your life, such as your husband and mother, who have been stable and loyal advocates during your recovery. I am greatly impressed with the virtues of strength, honesty, wisdom, compassion, and abiding faith you have skillfully woven throughout the pages of your compelling narrative.
Please know that whether or not your book becomes a best seller, you have lit a torch from the baptismal fires of your own crucible that casts an illuminating brilliance on a shadowy subject for all of us whose lives are directly or indirectly affected by chemical imbalance. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for your inspiring, precious, and heroic gift, Rebecca, and may you, like the sturdy red and yellow spring tulips mentioned in your book, always stay firmly rooted in the solidity, richness, and wellness of your sacred middle ground.
God Bless,
Stephanie McIntosh
Honest, funny, informative.......2001-10-19
Rebecca Merriman writes from the heart. She tells us that manic-depression is both an exhilirating and frightening roller coaster ride type of mental illness. It affords its suffereres with an oversized dose of happiness, confidence, and risk-taking only to plunge them into the depths of darkness and despair. Merriman writes with a "no holds barred" approach, opening the door to this mystifying disorder from which so many people suffer.
Drawing from her journals, Merriman shows through her writing how words helped put her manic depressive world in order, especially after her psychotic breaks and subsequent hospitalizations.
For anyone suffering from manic depression or who knows someone touched by this discorder, this book is an easy-to-read and enjoyable story of what can be a devastating, and sometimes deadly, illness. It offers hope by showing, from first hand experience, how the medications and counseling available today to manage it can help people live healthy lives.
