Well written and developed; it is apparent that this author has captured a characteristic of American life that eludes the present generation. The ones that lived through the "cold War" can only appreciate the patriotism that was America. Hemely captures it well. Does he go overboard in an effort to serve; perhaps... it is the essence of wanting to serve our country and the frustration of not being called. This is not what you might want to call a politically correct book. Well done!

A mere chance encounter that turned into a great adventure........2007-05-23

I had never heard the story of the airplane highjacking and was intrigued when i first saw the book sitting in an art gallery. After reading the flap it intrigued me a little bit more. Though when i first saw Reds sitting there i just had to actually meet him and buy his book. I told my girlfriend, "see that man sitting over there....he highjacked a plane in 1969 to go to Cuba and assasinate Castro." Ha she was quite astonished to say the least, and wondered how i knew that.

After reading the book I have to say it was an awesome read. I felt like I had been actually there with Reds on many of his adventures. To actually meet the man and talk to him for even just a few minutes really completed the experience. Thank you for your service Reds, and thank you for an awesome adventure.

I have served with Reds and when I learned of his book I immediately bought it and could not put it down. It was an easy read in that it has a great story that keeps you interested. As a true story, when you learn what he went through and what happened as a result, amazing. I hope it turns out to be as good a movie as it is a book!

Hate to say it, but I found myself doing the same thing as the reviewer named Leslie: leafing through the book, searching for passages about the author's husband's illness, and not passages where in which she talks about herself. I was disappointed by this book, and found it nearly impossible to care about the people in it. I thought I would have been left thinking more about what became of them and wondering about the author and her family's well-being, but all I thought was, eh.

BORING.......2004-08-21

I read this book to read about a man with anorexia, not about the boring life of a woman married to him. I skimmed through the whole book to try to find the tiny paragraphs scattered throughout that are actually about his eating disorder. In my opinion, she uses his eating disorder to tell the dull, dry tale of her own life. Don't read this book, even if you don't care about reading about eating disorders.

Who's the story about?.......2002-06-27

I was a little unhappy with this book. Not because the author isn't a decent writer, but because from the description of the book I thought this book was about the life of a male anorexic. The book, however, is mostly about the authors life (wife of the anorexic), not her husband. I did not buy this book to read about the life of a wife of an anorexic, but to take a rare look into the life of a male anorexic. This book jsut didn't provide that. It is still, over all, a good book, which is why I still gave it 3 stars.

I Admired the Author.......2002-06-17

Although I read more than a few reviews of this book that chided Barbara Lawrence for being a whinning, affluent woman who simply contributed to her husbands problems, I disagree. Rather, I found Ms. Lawrence's memoir to be a courageous and honest account of her struggles living with an eating disordered person, while also battling her own demons. Rarely do we get a look at things from the perspective of anyone but the person with the disorder. But Ms. Lawrence had her own story to tell, and I thnk she did a fine job of telling it. Having an eating disorder myself, I was heartened by Ms. Lawrence's ability to lay bear her own complicity in the dysfunction of her marriage in a compassionate and forthright way. I was somewhat surprised that she wasn't more proactive when it came to helping Tom seek treatment, but only a little. I don't think it was so much a function of naivete, as it was denial (of how bad things were, of how misguided her decision was to marry Tom in the first place, of the extent to which fear and a sense of unworthiness defined her existence) that motivated her? Although my own socio-economic background could not be more different from the author's I did not find this a barrier to sympathy or understanding. Instead, the strength of the book to me was in her ability to allow us to fully enter her complex inner life, and the struggle for wholeness I believe she is finally waging with success. As for the person who blithely commented that he/she was not surprised that Tom 'got better' when he found someone other than Barbara to be with, don't kid yourself people, eating disorders are about the sufferers pathology. Which is to say, no one can either make us sick or well. That awesome task remains our own.

Hard to understand.......2001-01-16

Although it was a fascinating story, this was a hard book to read. It was hard to be sympathetic to the characters -- Barbara because of her incessent whinning about how tough her life with a wealthy family was and how unfair that she didn't have a trust fund like her siblings, and him because he had absolutely no redeeming qualities. There is nothings likable about Tom, and the reader isn't cheering for his recovery. He is obviously mentally ill and utterly self-involved from the very beginning, and why she doesn't recognize this is puzzling. So is the fact that she stays with this lunatic for *25 years*. She doesn't love him, she doesn't need him, he's ruining her life... but still she stays. She never confronts the fact that she's co-dependant, and it leaves with reader with the idea that she stuck around because living with a sick, twisted man made for fascinating material. I'm not convinced that his problem was anorexia -- he had obvious mental and social problems before he started starving himself, and I felt that the anorexia was simply another syndrome of whatever was wrong with him. That a bright, successful, wealthy woman would stay with someone like him and tolerate his gross, controlling behavior left me shaking my head. Why Barbara, why?

Lincoln from Primary Sources.......2003-05-31

This book, first published in 1971, presents the life and career of Abraham Lincoln through the pages of the newspapers that covered it. This work is, therefore, essentially a biography written with multiple voices and from differing perspectives by the journalists who watched Lincoln's public life. It contains all of the virtues and vices of the reportorial profession. At times the reprinted articles are eloquent and insightful, at others they present gross inaccuracies and exaggerations. All come together to offer a complex portrait of arguably the most significant president of the American republic. Overall, they offer a fascinating representation of Abraham Lincoln and his times.

Editor Herbert Mitgang makes clear that the individual articles reprinted in this collection should never be considered objective accounts of Lincoln's activities. Instead, the newspapers of that era were overtly partisan. Even a relatively small city like Lincoln's Springfield, Illinois, had two newspapers, one ardently supportive of Lincoln and the Republicans, the other rabidly hostile. And both reported the same events in strikingly different ways. Readers see repeatedly in this collection the differing reportage of events in Lincoln's life. For instance, accounts of the Lincoln-Douglas debates are sensationalized toward one side or the other depending on the political allegiance of the newspaper reporting them. Mitgang appropriately notes that these reports "presented history in the rough" (p. xxiv).

While this collection ranges across the life of Abraham Lincoln, well over two-thirds of the work is devoted to his presidential career and the Union's victory in the Civil War against the Confederacy. Almost every major military action is discussed in some detail, but more importantly the role of Lincoln in reshaping the nation with the abolition of slavery receives considered attention. The struggles to maintain a ruling coalition and to manage both the radicals of Lincoln's own party and the peace Democrats enter the discussion. Of course, the assassination of Lincoln and succession of his vice president to the oval office gains attention.

This is a marvelous entrée for students into the primary sources of history. Newspapers have shaped our understanding of political events since the birth of the nation and this collection goes far toward illuminating the career or Abraham Lincoln. The reports and opinions of journalists show a person and a time in both its ambiguity and complexity. Its availability in this paperback reprint provides excellent grist for students.

Shadowdad displayed a vision from the heart. Well written and moving, the book certainly touched my heart. A definite read especially for those with aging parents. Rick says it all beautifully.

Quality of life vs. quantity of life.......2000-02-28

Rick's story about his family's experience with his Dad following several debilitating strokes must have been an extraordinarily difficult story to write. But I'm glad he did it. He discusses honestly the very difficult decisions and emotions families of "no hope, no quality of life" patients face. It is thought provoking and would be an excellent vehicle to facilitate a discussion on assisted suicide/living will issues. We are kinder to our pets at the end of their lives than we are to our family members.

Shadowdad a Riveting Read.......2000-01-06

Watrous's book contains a moving account of both the author's relationship with his father and the gradual deterioration of his father's physical, mental and emotional conditions following a stroke. Watrous examines his family's experience with a living will in New Hampshire and details his own struggle with the Death with Dignity isssue. Also discussed: resident care, assisted suicide, euthanasia and the rights of humans not to suffer.

Hard to read, hard to put down.......1999-12-23

This is a gutsy book, particularly the last third, as it chronicles with unusual personal honesty the five-year decline of the author's father from a bright and energetic person to the shell of a man sentenced to a lingering death. This book certainly makes you think about your own end. D H
