      Book Description

From Welfare to Work focuses on the challenge of moving welfare recipients from welfare roles to working roles. It offers a detailed, in-depth analysis of how private corporations and industries can become effective partners with government in training and hiring welfare recipients for permanent positions. The core of the text offers a compelling success story using a case example of how Pennsylvania Blue Shield trained, hired, and retained several hundred welfare recipients on its work force. It proved to be an innovative training and employment program: the corporation benefited from the participants new skills and loyalty, and society benefited as welfare costs were cut. Moreover, Pennsylvania Blue Shield has increased its pool of workers while making a contribution to both its community and society, proving that, with appropriate assistance from the government, private industry can make a difference. Ideal for students of social policy and business ethics, From Welfare to Work presents a broad discussion of welfare reform, public policy, and corporate social responsibility. It offers a practical explanation of the specific steps needed to establish a welfare to work program, including corporate tax incentives, business and government collaborations, and the special needs of welfare recipients. Demonstrating that it is possible for corporate America to combine bottom-line goals with socially responsible goals, this text is essential reading for all corporate executives who combine concern for the well-being of their companies with a sense of social responsibility. It is also fundamental reading for all legislators on the federal and state levels, as it calls attention to the essential role of the public sector in making possible the involvement of the private sector.

3 out of 5 stars Great story of corporate responsibility.......2002-10-11

From Welfare to Work: Corporate Initiatives and Welfare Reform, by Felice Davidson Perlmutter, was an informative book about how private corporations can collaborate with public welfare systems to train and hire employees. The book explores the need and benefits of corporate initiative to aid both the corporation and welfare recipients. The majority of Perlmutter's book details in extremity an example of a private insurance corporation, Pennsylvania Blue Shield, and their program to train and hire welfare recipients. The purpose of the case study is to explain how a large corporation can employ welfare recipients successfully and to address the issues that are critical to encourage corporations to execute a program of this nature. The program designed by Pennsylvania Blue Shield is fascinating because it shows how companies can become more dynamic by making profits and showing corporate responsibility.

Perlmutter does an excellent job of showing the extent that a company can be socially responsible and benefit financially at the same time. She uses a number of statistics to show that the costs associated with the programs are helping to reduce public spending and invest in the future success of both the individuals that are trained and the corporations implementing the programs. One noticeable aspect left out of the book is the lack of examples that illustrate poor implementation of corporate responsibility initiatives in contrast to the success stories mentioned.

Overall, this book was somewhat interesting to read. From Welfare to Work would be extremely valuable for a corporate executive to gain ideas beneficial to his or her company, but as a college student, there is not much use for this book other than opening my eyes to the fact that more than just public tax dollars can be used to help welfare recipients. It is good to know that many people on welfare want to do something with their lives other than sit around and receive government checks. If more companies would use programs such as the one described in the book, a great deal of tax dollars spent on welfare would be saved and the quality of life in our country would increase with more people having pride in their jobs.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic intro, but lack modern and technical info.......2000-06-09

This book provides an excellent background for new precision farming students/users. It is centered around building knowledge about how precision farming works, and how it can be applied. THIS BOOK IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE THAT ALREADY HAVE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND IN PRECISION FARMING. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU SEEK A MORE ADVANCED, TECHNICAL REFERENCE.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of the engineering behind precision farming.......2000-04-13

For anyone with an interest in precision farming but has only gained knowledge through magazine articles or talks on the subject, understanding this text can give a good foundation and insight for future learning on the subject. From the text, one can learn about the satellite system used in global positioning, remote sensing techniques, monitors aboard combines, sprayers and planters and computer communications in a modern farm production system. Finest attention to detail and sound decisions for maximum profitability is what precision farming is ultimately about. With an understanding and ability to apply the knowledge, opportunity awaits. This book is a starting point. I also believe that this book would work well as a supplemental text for a college or vocational agriculture course geared toward the subject.

                  Book Description

This book is a contemporary review of selected subjects in liquid chromatography, especially of the technical development, rather than the applications. The subjects are focused in the biomedical and environmental fields. This is also a troubleshooting record. Complex analytical problems such as sensitivity (sensitive detection by chemiluminescence, coulometric detection, laser based detection, necessity of degassing the system for sensitive detection), difficulty (free radical detection by Electron Spin Resonance, Polarimeter for chiral recognition) and reproducibility (packings for chiral separation and stable bonded silica gels) are solved. Theoreticallyand environmentally important miniaturizations are described. Individual chapters written by specialists provide information beyond what can be found in general textbooks of liquid chromatography.

                    Book Description

This remarkably immediate memoir tells of the U.S Army's essential role in the Pacific campaigns alongside the Navy and Marine Corps. America's sons, born in the first quarter of the 20th century, were forged in the twin crucibles of the Great Depression and World War II. The values and attitudes of these mostly idealistic young males ultimately sustained them in horrific trials against incredibly courageous, and often suicidally committed, Japanese soldiers blindly loyal to their superior officers and the Emperor.

MacGregor graphically describes the dire Depression years of 1930s' America, when he grew up in Spokane, Washington. He then takes readers through a heart-felt account of the war years and the savage, face-to-face small-unit actions in the Mariana Islands, The Philippines, and Okinawa from 1944 to 1945.

"Through These Portals" also contains one of the most notable collections of combat photographs ever assembled, and the author's discussion of small-unit action is exceptional. This memoir is truly an infantryman's account of war at its worst, and individual soldiers at their best.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2005-01-12

Wayne MacGregor was a US Army rifleman in the Pacific during World War Two who fought on Guam, the Phillipines and Okinawa. Through These Portals is a memoir of his childhood and war experiences. The battle descriptions are as descriptive of the horrors of war as any book ever written. The difference in this book is that he tries to place his experiences in the context of the war at large. For those with an intimate knowledge of the war this may seem redundant but for those who aren't as knowledgable of the war this extra information is helpful. The author also tends to moralize a bit but he is merely voicing common views of his generation. This book is definitely a must read and a good first memoir to read on the war in the Pacific.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth of How Boys Become Men in War.......2004-04-12

I was assigned to read Through These Portals in my WWII in the Pacific Class about a year ago at WSU. As a history major I enjoyed reading it and had a few things to say about this book.

When boys signed up for the service in WWII and even WWI they were expecting a "great adventure" where they would get to punch some "Jap" or "Jerry" however once they got their first taste of combat their attitudes changed from adventurous to survival. The title "Through These Portals" perfectly identifies with the coming of age in wartime conditions.

They go in as beach boys from all over the US, and they come out battle hardened men who have seen death multiple times and in many cases were the instrument of death. MacGregor perfectly captures this in his thesis about the transformation of boys to men. MacGregor's experience at Okinawa, Leyte, the Philippines and Guam really illustrated his own philosphes.

Which brings me to my next point, the imagry was nice, since this is an explicit memoir of MacGregor's experience he got to tell us every detail he could remember from the run-down boots he was forced to wear, to the horrible conditions of being in a foxhole to the Japanese fighting spirit that casted hell on our boys in the Pacific.

The only bone I have to pick is the first two chapters (56 pages) where he talks about himself growing up in the depression torn Pacific Northwest. This portion of the book REALLY dragged on and on and on till I had to skip that portion of the book. There were some dragging parts in between battles during the war portion of the book that also dragged however that could not be helped, however, the intro COULD have been better.

I personally met MacGregor a year ago and got to talk to him about why he included that section in his book, he said it was mostly just him recolecting his experience so yes, it could've been left completely out or maybe just a few pages.

Overall, a great book for history buffs like myself. However for general reading I would think twice. A great book for both would be With the Old Breed by EB Sledge.

5 out of 5 stars Captures both dramatic events and the grind of daily life.......2003-09-19

Wayne C. MacGregor Jr. is a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army 77th infantry division. Through These Portals: A Pacific War Saga is MacGregor's personal memoir of service in the U.S. Army during the Pacific campaigns, where he fought alongside the Navy and Marine Corps. Informative remembrances of the dire hardships of the Great Depression, background the values, attitudes, and morals that sustained the American troops who were thrust into lethal confrontation with the highly trained, combat savvy, ideologically fanatical, and sometimes suicidal Japanese soldiers. Also available in a hardcover edition, and a very highly recommended addition to World War II Military History collections, Through These Portals vividly captures both dramatic events and the grind of daily life as American soldiers struggled and often forfeited their lives in a war in the Pacific Theatre.

                      Book Description

All newborns in the U.S. and in many parts of the world now have a couple of drops of blood drawn from their heels in order to test them for PKU and a host of other genetic disorders that can cause mental retardation or premature death if not treated immediately. This is the biography of the man best known for his development of newborn screening for PKU. Yet this was only one of his prodigious accomplishments. Tests were developed in Bob Guthrie's laboratory for more than 30 treatable disorders that cause mental retardation or death, giving the term "newborn screening" fresh meaning. He also waged a battle against lead poisoning long before the public or the medical community became concerned about this danger and was a member of the Physicians for Social Responsibility-an organization devoted to preventing nuclear war and o-posing nuclear weapons testing.

When Deng Xiaoping died in 1997, his unlikely heir as China's principal leader was the former mayor of Shanghai, a middle-level leader who seemingly came from nowhere to occupy a position of central importance to the world. Bruce Gilley, a writer for the Far Eastern Economic Review, traces the life of Jiang Zemin, the adopted son of a hero of the Chinese revolution who himself took part in demonstrations against the nationalist government before joining the Communist party and assuming a series of posts. Removed from power during the Cultural Revolution, which he would later call "a period of unprecedented destruction," Jiang became a cautious critic of the old-line regime, rising to prominence only in the aftermath of the Tienanmen Square demonstrations of 1989. In the 1990s, Gilley maintains, Jiang helps preserve something of the Communist status quo while opening the government to younger reformers--who, Gilley suggests, will exert some pressure on the Chinese government to democratize, a pressure that government is likely to resist. --Gregory McNamee

                        Book Description

This pathbreaking book is the first full-length study of the rise to power of Jiang Zemin, now the central figure in China's "third generation" of leaders. Tracing Jiang's beginnings as a student in the underground Communist movement in Shanghai through his appointment by Deng Xiaoping as party general secretary and his sudden elevation to central authority in the wake of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing, Bruce Gilley offers a fascinating and highly readable look at how Jiang Zemin has secured his position as one of the world's most powerful figures.
Gilley follows Jiang's life and career from his early years as the adopted son of a revolutionary martyr, through his training in Western science and engineering, to his emergence as what many believed would be an interim figurehead in the wake of Tiananmen. Gilley shows how Jiang instead persisted as China's key leader following the death of Deng Xiaoping: While he shared the concerns of the last of the Party elders--including their idealistic views of Chinese socialism--he also accommodated the younger generation of economic reformers who have helped China to achieve staggering growth in its domestic economy and foreign trade. Gilley's analysis of the careful and methodical transition of power from Deng to Jiang during the 1990s is a remarkable study in complexity and contrast, clearly illustrating Jiang's ability to either placate his allies and adversaries or ruthlessly exploit their weaknesses.
Based on first-hand interviews and primary documents as well as a variety of mainland Chinese and international media sources, Tiger on the Brink is an unprecedented and immensely revealing look into the highest echelons of Chinese politics on the eve of the twenty-first century, and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the world's most populous nation and its newest emerging superpower.

                        3 out of 5 stars Such a love fest.......1999-04-14

For all the talk of China abandoning the practice of personality worshipping its leaders, here comes a non-Chinese citizen engaging in a veritable Jiang Zemin love fest. A nice introduction to the cast of characters in contemporary, post-Cultural Revolution China, but otherwise lacking in value as a serious reference book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the new age of Chinese politics.......1998-12-07

Gilley has written a thorough and scholarly, well researched book on Zemin, for Sinophiles and political addicts alike. He has an understanding of the motivations of Ziang in wishing to liberalise the Chinese economy, while holding on firmly to communist ideology. Also explained is the relationship between Ziang and Zhu Rongji, which while evident now, has a history steeped in Shanghai politics. A must read for all those interested in contemporary China.

This book presents the compelling histories of fourteen pioneer women, all born before 1900, who traveled Nevada Territory in unstable wagons, on temperamental mules, and in early Motel Ts to leave a legacy of courage and celebration as they broke records, hearts, and rules while conquering uncharted ground.

                                Book Description

Written by Gugin and St. Clair, Indiana University Southeast professors, this book details the life of Indiana native Sherman Minton (1890-1965), U.S. senator (1935-41), justice of the Seventh Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals (1941-49), and U.S. Supreme Court justice (1949-56). In his foreword, Abner J. Mikva, Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, Washington, D.C., Circuit, states that "this is a long overdue biography. Sherman Minton of Indiana was the last appointee to the Supreme Court who had prior experience as a member of Congress. . . . What makes this biography so pertinent is its thorough examination of Minton's entire career. . . . The book describes a direction on the Supreme Court that no longer exists and probably will not be replicated."

                                  Book Description

This brilliant book is a ground-breaking biography of a nineteenth-century Maori warrior, prophet, guerrilla fighter and leader.

With beautiful control, Judith Binney interweaves material from many sources: oral narratives, recorded sayings and song texts, as well as letters and diaries of many people, both Maori and Pakeha. The result is a completely new understanding not only of the previously much maligned revolutionary Te Kooti himself, but of the Maori and Pakeha worlds of late nineteenth-century New Zealand. Redemption Songs will have a significant impact in history, ethnography, cross-cultural studies, Pacific studies, biography and historiography, as well as being fascinating reading for the general reader. It is beautifully produced with black-and-white illustrations throughout and 12 pages of colour inserts.
