Hoping for hummers!.......2007-01-05
This is a great book. It's choc-a-bloc full of information. If you want to attract butterflies and hummingbirds then it really has a lot of ideas on how to do it. I can't wait to put the ideas into action in the Spring!
It's OK........2006-12-16
This is an ok book for someone wanting to learn the basics about attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. The information is all there, but the packaging isn't all glitter and glamour. Here's a functional source of information, not a coffee table book. The pictures are good, but not striking or enrapturing.
Beauty is more than petal-deep........2001-08-01
As the authors of this book point out, butterflies and hummingbirds add beauty to the garden. In my opinion, a garden made to sustain these interesting creatures is more than just pretty - it gives something back to nature. This guide describes how to attract butterflies and hummingbirds and provide essentials to keep them around. It offers many practical tips as well as background information on the species. The guide includes charts of plants which will attract and sustain hummers and butterflies throughout their lifespans, suggested garden designs, and an encyclopedia of hummingbird and butterfly species. It does not include a color photographs of each plant, but those can easily be found elsewhere. If you would like to devote a whole garden to hummers or butterflies, or just incorporate a few plants to attract them, this book is a good starting place and reference.

Book Description
1901. The author presents the legendary lore of the heavens in a way to attract the unprofessional reader. He uses numerous poetical quotations to illustrate the connection of the stars with the best and highest in literature. This book embodies many years' worth of material collected by the author in the course of his lecturing to college classes. Includes chapters on the twelve zodiac signs, some of the more popular constellations and much more.

Back to the Original.......2002-11-02
It's nice to see this book has been reprinted. It was written by my grandfather in 1901, and published by Ginn & Company of Boston, MA. He was professor of Astronomy at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.
I have a copy of the original publication; the cover has illustrations of the twelve signs of the zodiac, and has 129 pages, including the index. Hopefully, the reprinted edition has some biographical material on J.G. Porter.

Book Description
All 50 states are implementing mandates of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) assignments for contaminants likely to impact water in the United States, making water quality management a timely topic. TMDL criteria are a new initiative under the Clean Water Act and of critical importance to agricultural producers and state and federal regulators. Unfortunately, few precedents for assignment of pollutant maxima exist. This volume will show what one state (Mississippi) is doing to determine the most cost-effective and reliable practices for reducing the potential for non-point source pollution of U.S. waters. Readers may be able to apply some of the lessons learned in the Mississippi Delta Management Systems Evaluation Area (MDMSEA) to their own region.

Book Description
"When Is Daddy Coming Home?" is the moving story of one young American family during World War II. The war was coming to a close in Europe, and Richard Carlton Haney was only four years old when a telegram arrived at his family’s home, informing them of his father’s death. That moment was burned into the young boy’s memory and it changed his and his mother’s lives forever. Sixty years later Haney, now a professional historian, reconstructs his parents’ lives during the war, drawing from their letters, his mother’s recollections, and his own memories to create a unique blend of history and memoir. As the author recounts his father’s experiences in the 17th Airborne Division, he also recalls the effects of wartime rationing, scrap drives, and censored mail on his family at home.
Richard Haney is an expert on early-twentieth-century American history and on military history. Combining his personal memories and experiences with his knowledge of history, he has created a compelling, and often heart-rending, picture of life in wartime America. No one who reads this powerful story will come away unmoved.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Tribute .......2005-04-24
An amazing tribute book to both his father and his family during a time of turmoil for many many people. As said before it is a story that had taken place in towns across the United Stated, but also shows the side of Americans at home. I have had the honor of having Dr. Haney teach me in two classes and his knowledge is amazing on numerous subjects. After reading his book I hold him in even higher regard than I had before. It is an outstanding book that I recommend everyone read.
A Moving Tribute.......2004-11-29
When Is Daddy Coming Home is a very well written and heart moving story about how WWII impacted the author, his family and his life. The author's father, drafted later on in the war, and sent to Europe after those in his classification were determined to be exempt from the draft, was killed on a mission that didn't need to take place, after the glider he was in was hit right before it landed. The theme of the story, however, is the relationship between the author, his mother, and father. This is what we read about throughout the book, and this is what makes this story such a sentimental one. The author also reminds us that for every soldier that went overseas, there was a family, or friend waiting at home, and, many times, these people were left to carry on after the soldier was killed. I thank the author for sharing his story with us. This is a great book and I highly recomend it.
You Will Not Come Away Unmoved.......2004-11-24
With stories of young men coming home from Iraq in coffins the timing on this book is perfect. Many books are written on the history of World War II, from big stories of the movement of great armies, to the tales of heroic acts. This is not such a tale but a simple story of a young boy in Wisconsin (but the same story took place in every state). The young boy, born in November of 1940, writes of life in America during the war. Living in a happy family he was four years old when the telegram arrived at his family's home informing them of his father's death.
His father did not die the heroic death that you make movies about, it was an ordinary soldiers death. What makes it special is the writing in this book. At once historical, memories and poignant. It is an often heart-rending picture of life in wartime America.
Don't attempt to read this book without a hankerchief at hand.
A touching tale.......2004-11-19
This is a sweet little family story of World War II that comes with a sad ending. You know what's coming, but it still gets you in the solar plexus, the heart and the tear ducts. Richard Carlton Haney humanizes his father, and also brings in his mother and the Wisconsin homefront (it could be anywhere), while avoiding so many of the cliches that have become common of late. The truth, including one heartbreaking picture among the many interesting pictures, is wrenching enough. The text of the actual letters to and from Pfc Clyde Haney follow the main story, and are a wonderful addition.

Book Description
Memories of Kreisau and the German Resistance is the personal account of Freya von Moltke, a member of the Kreisau Circle, a German resistance group that participated in the attempt to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944. Freya’s husband, Helmuth von Moltke, was a cofounder of the circle and was executed after the failed assassination attempt.
Freya recounts both personal details and sweeping historical events. She describes the resistance work carried out during the meetings of the circle as well as the last days of Kreisau, after many of the members of the resistance were executed for their roles in the failed assassination attempt. When the war ended in 1945, Freya was evacuated from Kreisau, and the von Moltke estate was given to Poland.
Customer Reviews:
The Kreisau Circle.......2004-09-06
Sixty years ago the Gestapo and S.S. were seeking to destroy the members of the Kreisau Circle in Germany. Helmuth James Count von Moltke, Freya's husband, was co-founder and leader of this group. Freya von Moltke was intimately involved in the creation and work of the Kreisau Circle. In this thin book she recalls those days in Nazi Germany as the group prepared for the downfall of Hitler and the rebuilding of post-war Germany. With the arrest of her husband she carried on the work of the group and the preservation of their documents.
The final chapter recalls her life in Poland and Germany as the Russians and Poles took over goverance. Here we come to know a truly creative woman who persevered in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
Questions raised by members of the Kreisau Circle are totally relevant today. Helmuth James von Moltke was hung in January 1945 for thinking the "wrong thoughts." When judged by Roland Freisler of the People's Court, he was informed that those who were not for Hitler were enemies of the State! How relevant to our world where the same theme is constantly spouted by those in power. We have much to learn from the Kreisau Circle in the preservation of Freedom and Democracy.

Customer Reviews:
Ranald MacDonald, American and World Pioneer.......2006-02-04
Joann Roe has written a wonderful biography and book on some great History. Ranald MacDonald comes to life and the history his actions affected is explained in great detail. Joann Roe has done her homework. She not only uses original sources but she visited the places she describes. Where material from Ranald's life doesn't exist she fills in the blanks with others views and explains the surrounding history. She starts with Ranald being born in the now present day Astoria, Oregon. His father is a rising star and eventual Chief Factor in the Hudson's Bay Company and Mother is Princess Raven, a daughter of the local Chief Conconlly of the Chinook tribe. He is given a gentleman's education and his first job as a bank clerk. He is bored with this and runs away to sea. From there he joins a whaler and starts his trek around the world. He becomes one of the first Americans to set foot on Japan and teach English while held in captivity and run down the whole country before being released. Then he ends up in Australia for a while looking for gold. Then from there more ships and a couple of ship wrecks while globetrotting. Eventually he ends up back in western Canada and is greatly involved in the Gold rush around the Fraser River and exploration of Vancouver Island. His last days are spent in Eastern Washington near the site of the old Hudson's Bay Company Fort Colville on a ranch near some cousins and a niece. He led an amazing life and has an amazing story that more should know.
First rate account of an extraordinary life........1999-09-07
Jo Ann Roe has written a magnificent book, adding considerable information and insight on Ranald MacDonald. In addition to the biographical content, she added valuable scope by describing and explaining the context, for instance the Japanese forces at play at the time of MacDonald's arrival, the gold rush in Australia and British Columbia, etc. Thanks to her lively style, Ranald MacDonald becomes very present to the reader. It is a remarkable historical research.

Book Description
There's a cruel science experiment in which a frog is placed into a pot of cool water and heated slowly, one degree at a time. With such a gradual rise in temperature, the frog barely notices and is boiled alive. This is the predicament in which Annie found herself. Had her husband Ed become violent on their wedding night, she surely would have fled immediately. But instead, the marriage slowly deteriorated. She realized something wasn't right, but kept trying to make it work. If only she could have been a better cook, prettier, more fun, Ed would have loved her. It was only after a beating, in which she was thrown repeatedly against a door, that Annie finally took their 14-month-old son and left. This is a true story, written as a down-to-earth, daily journal and includes prayer, poetry, and Scripture. It's a story of faith, family, friendship, and survival.
