Book Description
Bananas, the most frequently consumed fresh fruit in the United States, have been linked to Miss Chiquita and Carmen Miranda, "banana republics," and Banana Republic clothing storeseverything from exotic kitsch, to Third World dictatorships, to middle-class fashion. But how did the rise in banana consumption in the United States affect the banana-growing regions of Central America? In this lively, interdisciplinary study, John Soluri integrates agroecology, anthropology, political economy, and history to trace the symbiotic growth of the export banana industry in Honduras and the consumer mass market in the United States.
Beginning in the 1870s when bananas first appeared in the U.S. marketplace, Soluri examines the tensions between the small-scale growers, who dominated the trade in the early years, and the shippers. He then shows how rising demand led to changes in production that resulted in the formation of major agribusinesses, spawned international migrations, and transformed great swaths of the Honduran environment into monocultures susceptible to plant disease epidemics that in turn changed Central American livelihoods. Soluri also looks at labor practices and workers' lives, changing gender roles on the banana plantations, the effects of pesticides on the Honduran environment and people, and the mass marketing of bananas to consumers in the United States. His multifaceted account of a century of banana production and consumption adds an important chapter to the history of Honduras, as well as to the larger history of globalization and its effects on rural peoples, local economies, and biodiversity.
Customer Reviews:
Big Business.......2007-05-14
To us they are just bananas, but to Honduras they were a major source of income until big business got involved. If you want to see how big business can destroy a source of income for many small farmers and destroy the local environment, then this is the book for you. Read about how promises were made but not kept by big business. See how business "leaders" were doing just fine but local workers were struggling to make a living. Healthcare or benefits, for the local worker, why? The struggle goes on for the local Honduran people while the banana business just moved on.
Banana for Banana Cultures.......2006-03-26
I very much enjoyed this book! It offers some interesting insights into the history of banana production in Honduras from an agro-ecological perspective. The impact of pathogens on patterns of production is not often highlighted, and this book does just that.
However, this work also attempts to do too much and in the end (in this case, quite literally -- in the Conclusion), it doesn't do enough of all that it sets out to do. A tighter analysis on the role of the state in banana production would have improved the overall analysis. A sharper historical perspective would have also served this purpose. Furthermore, a wider discussion of the issue of memory in the Chapter on Prision Verde would have made a discussion of collective memory add a new and interesting dimension to the overall project.
In sum, the book is very interesting and the moves the author makes (including the literary analysis, as well as his highlighting the trials of producers in the face of plant diseases, etc.) result in making this work a very interesting read! This book is worth having in any collection of works on Central America!

Book Description
The book presents a new theoretical approach to phase resetting and stimulation-induced synchronization and desynchronization in a population of oscillators. The author uses stochastic methods from statistical mechanics and applies his theory to models of practical importance in physiology and neuroscience. He makes the book accessible to readers not familiar with the mathematical formalism. The results are presented and additionally explained without formulae, particularly with a view to the interests of neuroscientists. The author also proposes improvements to stimulation techniques as used by neurologists and neurosurgeons in the context of Parkinson's disease and MEG/EEG data analysis. The book is written for researchers and graduate students but it can also benefit medical practitioners.
Product Description
Under the leadership of a dedicated pilot, the B-26 Marauder was a formidable weapon in the campaign to defeat Hitler's armies, and, in the words of his first copilot, "Lou was the best there was. He created a spirit among the crew that made us really want to fly the mission and be disappointed if we had to abort." This memoir begins with Captain Rehr's arrival in pre-invasion England in May 1944 and ends with the completion of Major Rehr's aircraft disarmament duties in postwar Germany in July 1945. Rehr, a squadron commander with the 323rd Bombardment Group, earned 12 air medals, five battle stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star. He describes his experiences, including five night-bombing missions he volunteered to fly in 1944 and accounts of attacks by Me-262 jets in late April of 1945. The narrative also recollects two summers in 1936 and 1938, when, as a teenager touring Germany, he observed the influence of Nazism. This memoir is the result of forty years of research on the combat history of the B-26, contributions from comrades, an extensive collection of rare photographs, artifacts including newspaper articles and letters, and all military records and documents relating to Rehr's part in World War II. One appendix describes where readers can find images and restorations of the B-26. A second gives brief follow-ups on the men described in the narrative, often with their remembrances of the events outlined.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent War Memoir.......2006-12-08
"Marauder" By Lois S. Rehr, with Carleton R. Rehr. Subtitled: "Memoir Of A B-26 Pilot In Europe In World War II." McFarland & Company, Jefferson, N. C. 2004.
The mains portion of this book deals with the author's adventures as a pilot flying the Martin B-26 Marauder, a twin engine bomber, in World War II. The book jumps right into the action, beginning with the D-Day, June 6 1994 invasion of Festung Europa. The author then traces the action from newly liberated France to the attacks on the heart of Germany. Chapter 11, "The Last Of The Jet Boys", is one of the more extensive accounts of the USAAF struggles with the German ME-262 jet fighter that I have read. Almost all, if not all, of the American aircraft were outclassed by the ME-262 jet. I found the author's stories about flying sorties to be gripping, but there are better flying accounts, as in "Wreaking Havoc: A Year In An A-20" by Joseph W. Rutter. The A-20 was also a twin engine bomber.
The last chapter, "Disarmament Duty" is interesting in its own right. The author describes the low-key but ever present hostility of the conquered Germans. When the Americans requisitioned their house for living quarters, some German ladies stuffed up the toilets with towels. Louis S. Rehr, the author, had visited Nazi Germany in the late 1930s. He had photographed various monuments, such as the "Feldherrnhalle" in Munich (1938). On page 181, the photo shows the author in the same spot in 1945. He also took a picture of the famous (infamous) Munich Hofbrauhaus being occupied by the American 157th Infantry Regiment. This chapter, alone, is worth reading the book for.
Great Read!.......2004-02-03
"Marauder: Memoir of a B-26 Pilot in Europe in World War II" by Lou Rehr (with Carleton Rehr) is a terrific read for anyone who enjoys aviation, or military history. It chronicle's Rehr's war experience from a Midwestern military academy, to pre-war pilot training, joining a B-26 squadron in the European theater during days after D-Day to the close of the war as that squadron's commander. If you enjoyed Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers", "Marauder" is a great companion piece, taking the reader through the final year of World War II from the perspective of a bomber crew. There is no bravado, no embellishment, just the true-adventure of another quiet hero of our "greatest generation". Mr. Rehr is able the frame the war with the unique insight of a young man who had visited pre-war Europe in 1938. Immediately after VE day, he witnessed some of the horrors of the Third Reich as well as the historic aircraft of the Luftwaffe. At 218 pages, this fast-paced book, and would make a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Book Description
Don't say a word. Bobby Barnes was ten the day his father shot himself, and the first lesson he learned about it was that he should never tell a soul because people might reject him. From that day forward, he hid his secret behind a series of masks--the mask of the Eagle Scout, the wise doctor, community and church leader--and feared that one day his mask would be torn off and he would be naked amid his humiliation and self-doubt. This is the story of a man who achieved the outward signs of success but yearned for inner peace. It took Bob Barnes many years and an unexpected turn of events to discover himself and realize the true meaning of his life. Read his story, and you will learn that doctors are human; they are susceptible to emotional pain and doubts about their profession. Read his story, and learn something about yourself.
" ... a deeply moving account of someone coming to grips with a painful past." - Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
" ... should prove helpful to many people." - Frederick Buechner
Customer Reviews:
The Good Doctor is Naked, Robert Hardy Barnes, MD.......2004-08-26
What a vital message!
"The Good Doctor is Naked" is Bob Barnes' personal story; but for me this book is so much more. For me, it speaks of what I have come to believe: I believe that if we, as a society, are to save ourselves from the terribly sad and neurotic existence we lead, we must re-define the word success.
Here is a medical doctor who has achieved it all; society would say, "This guy made it... big!" I say that Bob Barnes has "made it...big",too. But I say it for different reasons: I say it because he has dared to be vulnerable, I say it because he has dared to be honest, I say it because he has dared to challenge his own definition of the word "success."
Bob Barnes is saying to me that he could not find personal success until the "Real Bob Barnes" stood up. He is saying to me that his achievements stand; but that he is not the measure of his achievements. He is saying to me that he is the measure of his self knowledge, the measure of his self love, the measure of his honesty, the measure of his empathy and the measure of his service to his fellow man.
What a wonderful definition of success.

Evita: The Real Life of Eva Peron

Book Description
In this rigorous biography, Dujovne Ortiz takes us closer to the periphery of a woman who, from humble origins, was able to reach the rare privilege of living forever in our collective memory.

A biography of Evita, the saintly madonna of Argentina which leans more toward entertainment than heavy history. Ortiz recounts Eva Peron's humble birth, her extraordinary rise to power in Argentina at the side of her husband General Juan Peron, and her short and legendary reign as a virtual queen, dispensing comfort to the masses before she died from cancer at 33. Evita was christened Eva Maria Duarte by her mother, whose liberal sex life was a necessary response to poverty. The beautiful Eva found the same necessity when she went to find work as an actress in Buenos Aires. Eva's power over men eventually caught General Peron, and together their hatred of the ruling oligarchy reshaped the country. It is a political story with enough spice to make a dozen bodice-ripping novels.
Book Description
What fed Eva Peron's desire to be the savior Argentina's working class. Comprehensive and dramatic biography.
Customer Reviews:
loses something in translation.......2006-06-14
In English, this book often reads more like a romance novel than like a serious biography; I do not know whether it reads that way in the original language. It seems more like a work of poetry than a work of prose- not as many cold hard facts as I would have expected from a biography, but some vivid character portraits. Eva Peron comes across as a kind of overgrown child, alternatively desperate to be somebody, do good, and fulfill her whimsical desires for elegance and ego gratification. Her husband comes across as a cold fish, someone who would never have risen to the top in a bigger country with a larger talent pool.
An Epic Tale That Combines History and Mythology. .......2006-04-25
Alicia Dujovne Ortiz's major biography of Eva Peron is an interesting book chronicling the rise and fall of Argentina's most famous First-Lady.
Out of the many biographies written about Eva Peron, this is one of the better-researched interpretations so I definitely recommend it over the many other more sensationalized accounts. However, this is far from being the best of the lot. In my opinion, Nicholas Fraser and Marysa Navarro's book "Evita: The Real Life of Eva Peron" is the best written in the English language even though it's over 20 years old. Julie M Taylor's "Eva Peron: The Myths of a Woman" is also excellent and insightful, especially in getting a better understanding of the many myths this legendary woman inspired. Robert Crassweller's "Peron and the Enigmas of Argentina" also deserves mention because it is an excellent book, not just about Eva but of Peron and Peronism in general.
Ortiz's book is well researched but sometimes her personal opinion of Eva gets in the way. I guess it's to be expected when you have a woman analyze another woman who is renowned for her glamour and personal style. Ortiz does a good job laying out Eva's life from her humble beginnings to her amazing transformation into "Evita", the imposing and elegant blonde crusader of the less-fortunate. Ortiz uses a lot of witness testimony and she goes into detail when covering Eva's charitable work and Social Aid Foundation however it's nowhere near as detailed or as enlightening as the Spanish edition of her book which is disappointing and I will get into it a little later. Like Fraser/Navarro, Taylor, Crassweller and the several other historians/scholars who have researched Eva Peron and have written well-documented accounts, Ortiz also tries to separate myth from fact. Although at times, she is a bit rough towards the legend she is writing about, the author treats her sympathetically and portrays the mysterious Eva as a flawed but exceptional woman.
Eva's detractor's, on the other hand, have portrayed her as a one-dimensional caricature devoid of any human emotion and morals. Evita, in the eyes of Anti-Peronist biographers such as Mary Main, WA Harbinson, Paul L Montgomery etc, was a beautiful, murderous monster who was smarter than every single person alive in Argentina at the time and anyone who crossed her path fell victim to her dark, sinister charms. These writers dissect and bring to light every single negative character flaw, real or imagined, this woman may have possessed. They choose to ignore the 1000+ schools, 100+ hospitals and the thousands of other establishments such as homes, hostels and orphanages that Eva through her foundation built between 1948-1952. They hardly pay any attention to the food, medicine and money Eva personally handed out from her desk at the Evita Foundation or when she traveled to shanty-towns or remote, country villages. They may mention that through Eva's foundation several malnourished children finally received health care and food; they may hint at the fact that because of her several thousand impoverished country folk finally received running water and electricity; they may mention as a footnote that Eva sent First-Aid and food to countries outside of Argentina's borders such as Colombia, Ecuador, Turkey, Israel and the US but they will cite exploitation and self-aggrandizement as Eva's principal motive. But no matter how much they try to condemn her, the result is always the same, unintentional glorification. They loathe this bejeweled beauty but can't help love her all the same. The musical "Evita" is a perfect example of this. No matter how much it tries to discredit her, Eva's poetic image is what hovers in most people's mind long after the curtain descends. Most will remember an impeccably dressed blonde clutching a microphone and the famous taglines such as "She Seduced a Nation" or "EVITA IS IMMORTAL" or "EVITA will stir you to your very soul". These are hardly ways to represent such an amoral, corrupt megalomaniac who slept her way to fame.
This major biography of Eva Duarte de Peron was released around the same time as the film in 1996 (at least the English version was). It was originally written in French and later translated into several languages. It is very detailed and it held my interest throughout but having read the Spanish translation, this English version is a poor imitation. I'm not sure how close to the original the Spanish translation is but in comparing it to this, I noticed that the English edition is heavily edited and in some instances, very poorly translated. For those of you who can read Spanish, I recommend that version instead as it is far more complete. Having said that, Alicia Dujovne Ortiz treats Eva Duarte Peron as a flawed but extraordinary human being. After all that's exactly what Evita was, flawed but extraordinary? I guess that's how she should be remembered.

The dark myth of the white Santa Evita whose legacy as the patron saint of Argentina's poor. Ortiz paints a raw, compelling, and ruthless drive of one woman whose innate desire to rise above her shameful beginnings is riveting and profoundly sorrowful despite Eva's scliptic rise to power.
A biography which lapses into romantic best-seller style.......2003-09-12
I have yet to find an entirely satisfactory biography of Argentina's controversial first lady once widely revered as a saintly Madonna. This book is written chronologically, from the subject's birth in an unremarkable Argentinean provincial town, to her death and the return of her body to Argentina in 1974. It strives to be balanced and to summarize the evidence around various controversial points regarding the life of Eva Peron.
Unfortunately, this book, written by a Paris-based Argentinean-born journalist, while thoroughly entertaining, can hardly qualify as a serious historical or political analysis of Eva Peron and her times. Having only read the English version, it is hard to judge whether the translation is awkward is some places, or whether the original prose also lapses into a saccharine style of romantic best sellers. Even as a journalistic book on this subject, you might find a better, more articulate, and shorter account (which does draw from this book by Ortiz) in Looking for History: Dispatches from Latin America, by Alma Guillermoprieto (which I have also reviewed of this website).
There are some interesting photos in this book, but if it is photos of Evita and her times which interest you, I would recommend Evita: An Intimate Portrait of Eva Peron, by Tomas De Elia, which I have also reviewed on this site.
Unfortunate dramatization of an already dramatic story.......2003-01-31
EVA PERON by Alicia Dujovne Ortiz is not a good book. It is not helped by the fact that, as others have noted, it was originally written in another language. As is often the case, something was lost in the translation. In addition to being overly dramatic, at times tabloid-ishly so, it is plagued with historical inaccuracies: it uses the terms "dictator" and "fascist" to refer to Peron. Such accusations are by now passe to the serious biographer of Peron and Evita. As Robert D. Crassweller points out in PERON AND THE ENIGMAS OF ARGENTINA, "Peronism was not fascism ... (it was) an authoritarian populist movement, strongly colored by Catholic social thought (and) by nationalism [pp. 220-223]."
After reading EVA PERON by Alicia Dujovne Ortiz, I was left wondering what the point of it was. Why was this book published? It really has nothing of substance to offer. Obviously, it was published to coincide with the release of Madonna's movie EVITA and to capitalize on the renewed interest in the historical Eva Peron.
For a serious biography of Evita, I recommend EVITA: THE REAL LIFE OF EVA PERON. For an interesting anthropological study of Evita's importance to Argentine society, I would recommend EVA PERON: THE MYTHS OF A WOMAN.

Book Description
Page Lambert's story is a particular account of how she and her husband and their two small children moved from Colorado to Sundance, Wyoming. In superbly crafted writing, Lambert speaks of ranching traditions and of the cycles of life and death so elemental to ranchers. She explores Native American beliefs that go back generations and examines her own kinship to the wisdom of the western landscape. A universal story of the modern search for roots and traditions, In Search of Kinship offers a deep initiation into the process of connection to place and the resilience that rootedness offers.

Lyrical.......2004-02-04
Another writer who weaves words the way artists weave blankets: with knowledge and love.
The book is beyond wonderful and worth reading more than once!
It is a rare privilege to read such writing.......2001-06-10
In Search Of Kinship is an achingly luminous epiphany to read. A series of essays by an award winning Western author who honors her sacred connections to the earth through life and literature, In Search of Kinship draws on Native American sacred writings and traditions as well as others. It becomes a rich rainbow fusion seen through a filtering prism of light.
Unself-conscious in form and style, vivid in natural, daily detail, it is a series of testaments to a deeply felt faith in the land and creatures, human and non-human, who people the land set in Wyoming on the visionary back doorstep of the Black Hills near Sundance Mountain, Lambert draws upon numerous rich traditional literary sources, including Black Elk Speaks by John Niehardt, Buffalo Woman Comes Singing, by Brooke Medicine Eagle, and Lame Deer: Seeker of Visions by John Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes, to name a few. She weaves a rich blanket of hope, addressed to the land itself. In the epilogue,'Song of Songs Which is Wyoming's,' she writes of her aging horse, Romie: "Memories cloak and comfort. Time has, for each of us, a different measure. Your decline in many ways frees me to become a new woman whose past is just beginning to catch up with the future.
Actually, it is you , Wyoming, and not Redy, who has taken over Romie's role in my life. Our affair began despite my grudging nature, despite my loyalty to Colorado - land of my youth. At first, these gentle black hills hid their power from me. I compared your eastern edges to the Rockies of my childhood and thought them not worthy of my devotion.
I recoiled from your red-slashed buttes, scoffed at those who called them mountains; these mere places where your face wrinkled with age. I was, at first, deaf to the ancient whispers of those who had found shelter within your arms. I trod the ancient paths but saw only my own footsteps(pp.239-240)."
She goes on to describe the land as an ancestor, even a jealous lover.
"It was not fair of you to tease me with your elusive antelope, to flaunt your whitetail deer before my modern human eyes. You seduced me with the perfume of your summer sage, kindled memories of other women, dark-skinned and light.
But then, when I dreamt of home, of innocent days unburdened by painful truths, of running like the wind upon Romie's back in pursuit of the mythical buffalo, you pulled tight your sovereign rein and let loose the fury of your winter. You taught me that the true mythology of the buffalo, like the words of the Bible, must not be taken lightly. 'Ask the beasts,' it is written in Job. 'Speak to the earth, and let it teach you.'
Your storm raged around me, the vibration of your anger reaching deep chords. When I dared to open my eyes, you offered me a crystalline world, frosted brilliance glittering from every branch, a chance to start anew.
Like a reprimanded child, I pushed thoughts of former places from my consciousness and let you stake your claim on my no-longer-innocent soul.
It would have been easier had I not sifted your red earth through my fingers - had I not breathed in the musky odor of your mountain asters. I should have turned away from your hideless tipi rings, from your bouquets of dried weeds turned to silver sage, and from the shadows of your buffalo bones before it was too late. But I did not.
And now you will not let me go. You demand an enlightened future - whose very hope lies in the lessons of the past - a past that all our ancestors bequeath to all of us (.pp.240-41)."
It is a rare privilege to read such writing. In Search Of Kinship is to be kept, treasured, and returned to, for the glints and patina reflected in it are soul-enlightening.

A rare richness of spirit.......1999-03-24
This beautiful book of reflections about rural life, family values, and Wyoming, is a gem. Page Lambert brings grace and wisdom to her pages, as well as an understanding of what it means to live in the rural West. This is a book about love and courage. Both men and women will treasure this book and this author.
Moving, Extrodinary, Unique!!!!!!.......1999-01-11

Book Description
This book delineates the drive for Korean modernization by cultural nationalists during the colonial era in the early twentieth century. The cultural nationalism movement, led by moderate nationalists, eschewed overt resistance to Japanese imperialism and advocated self-strengthening programs to lay the foundation for future Korean independence. To describe this movement, this book focuses on Kim Songsu and his various projects for Korean modernization. The author provides a narrative that includes encapsulated stories and sheds light on the Japanese colonial policies concerning Korea.
A Korean Nationalist Entrepreneur examines Kim's projects in chronological order, reflecting historian Carter J. Erkert's statement that Kim's life history has been so closely intertwined with some of the deepest currents of modern Korean history itself. The book describes how Kim took over and developed a post-elementary school, founded Korea's first modern textile firm, established one of Korea's major newspapers, and established Posong Junior College (which later became Koryo University). In 1946, after Korea's liberation from Japan, Kim became a pivotal figure in the conservative Korean Democratic Party, which became the main opposition party in Korea in the 1950s. He eventually became vice president in 1951 under Syngman Rhee.
