From Saragossa to Moscow.......2000-05-13

Poles fought gallantly for France, and indirectly for their lost himeland, throughout the French Revoltionary and Napoleonic Wars. The most reliable of Napoleon's foreign troops, they marched the length and breadth of Europe and established a combat reputation second to none. Heinrich von Brandt was one of these, being commissioned into the Grande Armee as a sous-lieutenant shortly after Prussia's defeat in 1806. He quickly was assigned to the famous Legion of the Vistula, humped his pack, and went into Spain, seeing his first action in the famous second Siege of Saragossa. Brandt's fascinating narrative is lively, accurate, and blunt, telling in vivid detail the horrors of war and the lighter moments of garrison duty. He fought his war in Spain assigned to Suchet's Army of Aragon, seeing much action. When Napoleon starting gathering the huge army that invaded Russia in 1812, The Vistula Legion was one of the units pulled out of Spain to go into Russia. His description of the marches across Europe, the thorough preparation for the Grande Armee's invasion, and the trek to Moscow is fascinating-one can literally not put the book down. The best feature of the narrative, however, is Brandt's candid description of some of the notable personalities of the period, including Napoleon, Marshal Davout, and Marshal Suchet, all of whom he met and talked. He was praised by Suchet, interviewed for his commission by Davout, and saw Napoleon more than once, describing both he and Davout as having terrible tempers when provoked. His description of the terrible retreat from Moscow and the brilliant battle at the River berezina on the way out of Russian are fascinating. This is one of the best soldier memoirs I have ever read. It is as colorful as those by Charles Parquin and Baron Marbot, and very accurate. This book belongs on the book shelf of every Napoleonic historian and enthusiast.

In the great tradition of life stories, Ms. Rodman mixes the minute with the grand scheme of things, and paints for us a large detailed canvas of color and pathos. It is a great way of learning about far off places, through the eyes of one who lived it, rather than race by in a glass dome capturing only the superficial. Helen has made friends far and wide, and must be well loved by all. Methinks that whosoever knows her has a better chance of linking up with all inhabitants of the planet in less than the proverbial six degrees of separation... for she has known people in the most remote areas of the world, as well as presidents, prime ministers and even dictators!

I have finished reading From This Day Forward, (Memoirs Of An Attache Wife), and want to say that I loved it. What an interesting, rich, varied life Helen Rodman and her family have led, and with what gusto and equanimity she tells the story! I dropped everything in order to get on with reading this book and brooked no interruption till I got to the end.

Well written, this is the moving autobiography of a an attache wife's journey through three decades of travel and living overseas. Told with wit and irony, the reader rides the waves of happiness and sadness of the author's life in a manner that is deeply personal, often uplifting, sometimes heart wrenching. One marvels at the diversity of her experiences in locations ranging from the jungle regions of Central America to Buckingham Palace. Of equal interest are her descriptions of the people who cross her path, whether they be from the farthest reaches of the earth to the height of celebrity (Helen Hayes and John Wayne as examples). It is a pleasure to recommend this book as a fascinating insight into the life of an American woman who, as a team with her husband, represented our country with integrity, commitment, and dazzle.

Pattie was a young fur trapper from Kentucky, vainly seeking his fortune in the American southwest. The Narrative describes his sometimes outrageous exploits in New Mexico, along the Gila River, and in California from 1824 to 1830. He traps beaver, fights Indians, digs for gold, and saves thousands of Mexicans during a smallpox epidemic. This is a sweeping and generally accurate saga of the southwest and California of the time. A classic, and rightfully so.

What's true and what's not? .......2005-05-06

I can't recommend this book because its partly or mostly untrue. Pattie, is one is to believe him, traversed nearly every corner of the old West from 1824 to 1830, participated in countless battles with Indians, rescued Mexican maidens, was one of the first Mountain Men to reach California, became a hero when he vaccinated 18,000 Californians against smallpox, explored large parts of the Rocky Mountains, and ended up in a Mexican jail from whence he made his way back to the United States and dictated his story to a journalist.

Pattie tells a good tale and there is an air of authenticity in many of his travels. He probably saw some country out West, and his descriptions are no doubt valuable, but it appears he vastly exaggerated his exploits. The problem with reading the book is that you can't be sure what is truth and what is fiction.

Well, telling whoppers was a tradition among the Mountain Men and Pattie seems to have been a master teller of tall tales -- and smart enough not to make them so tall that they are manifestly untrue. There's enough authentic material about the Mountain Men in the 1820s to ignore this book without loss. If you're captivated by Pattie, the editor, Richard Batman, has written "James Pattie's West" which tries to unravel the truth in this story.
