Book Description
This is a major revision and redesign of a classic work in the field of veterinary medicine first published by Cornell University Press in 1933. For the Twelfth Edition of Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals, William O. Reece has overseen the writing of an essentially new book that retains what was best about its predecessors. Long a standard text for veterinary practitioners and other professionals who seek to refresh their knowledge of particular subjects, Dukes' Physiology of Domestic Animals will now appeal to a new generation of students of veterinary medicine and animal science and to biomedical researchers.
Section editors known for their scientific expertise and teaching skill oversaw the book's six main sections: The Body Fluids and Blood; Renal and Respiratory Function and Acid-Base Balance; The Cardiovascular System; Digestion, Absorption, and Metabolism; Endocrinology, Reproduction, and Lactation; and Nervous System, Special Senses, Muscle, and Temperature Regulation. This edition includes a complete listing of each chapter's contents immediately after the chapter head, study questions that highlight the major concepts of each major subsection, self-evaluation exercises at the end of the chapters, suggestions for further reading, and a comprehensive index.

Customer Reviews:
How to use "Go To" scopes and what to use them on.......2003-01-09
Covington's "Practical Amateur Astronomy 2 Volume Set" is for beginner and intermediate amatuer astronomers who have or are thinking of aquiring a computerized telescope. It consists of two titles, "How to Use a Computerized Telescope" and "Celestial Objects for Modern Telescopes", which complemet each other well.
The first book, "How to Use a Computerized Telescope" , is divided into two sections. The first covers basic topics on the use, care and feeding of telescopes in general. The second looks at three classic "Go To" telescope families. If you are looking to buy a computerized telescope, or already own one and want to get more out of it, then this is a good place to start.
Chapters:
PART I - Telescopes in general
1. Welcome to amatuer astronomy
2. How the sky moves
3. How telescopes track the stars
4. Using equatorial mounts and wedges
5. Telescope optics
6. Eyepieces and optical accessories
7. Astrophotography
8. Troubleshooting
PART II - Three classic telescopes
9. Three that led the revolution
10. Meade LX200
11. Celestron NexStar 5 and 8
12. Meade Autostar (ETX and LX90)
Though the models described in detail in the book are no longer the latest models, the foundations will allow one to get a better understanding of how computerized telescopes work, and how to get more out of their use.
In the second volume, "Celestial Objects for Modern Telescopes", Covington suggests various targets and observing programs. But that is not all. Also are tips on how to get the most out of various sources to identify the object of interest from various catalogs or atlases and to be able to tell a "Go To" telescope how to point to it. Probably the most useful pages in the book are the Bayer/Flamsteed to SAO cross-index and the GVCS constellation codes and star numbers.
Chapters:
PART I - Amatuer astronomy
1. Using this book effectively
2. Observing sites and conditions
3. The Moon, the Sun, and eclipses
4. The planets
5. Comets, asteroids (minor planets), and artificial satellites
6. Constellations
7. Stars - identification, nomenclature, and maps
8. Stars - physical properties
9. Double and multiple stars
10. Variable stars
11. Clusters, nebulae, and galaxies
PART II - 200 interesting stars and deep-sky objects
12. How these objects were chosen
13. The January-February sky (R.A. 6h-10h)
14. The March-April sky (R.A. 10h-14h)
15. The May-June sky (R.A. 14h-18h)
16. The July-August sky (R.A. 18h-22h)
17. The September-October sky (R.A. 22h-2h)
18. The November-December sky (R.A. 2h-6h)
Appendices
A. Converting decimal minutes to seconds
B. Precession from 1950 to 2000
C. Julian date, 2001-2015
The logical follow up for "How to Use a Computerized Telescope", this volume shows one how to use the various sources available to find the objects one is interested in studying. If I had this book when I first bought my LX200, I would have developed better habits in planning my observing sessions by being able to identify objects in the manner that the telescope has them identified in its database to find them quicker to allow more time for study and or imaging.

This memoir/adventure story covers a critically important phase in the creation of Israel's history.
Customer Reviews:
A life of Contribution & Meaning.......1999-02-14
An excellent account of brave men and women of a previous era - the stuff few if any young people are willing to do anymore, for their own lives/countries or others... enviable opportunities these people had to really risk all for a belief in something that was more than personal material gain... Regardless of your views on Israel, very worthwhile, easy, exciting reading. Great stuff Harold, and all those others!
Can't judge a book by its cover........1998-11-18
If you want a book about flying fighters for Israel, this ain't it (despite the cover picture). If you want a book about flying cargo into Israel (an Me-109 crammed into a C-46, for instance), and about shady methods used to get around international rules in order to fly cargo to Israel, then you want this one.
Also a personal story about the author beginning to get the big picture of life, rather than the small, selfish picture he had.

Book Description
As one of the designers and passionate proponents of the Oregon Health Plan, Ralph Crawshaw traveled the United States and abroad to proclaim its merits. His travels in the quest for compassionate health care combined with his witty writing garnered from years of being a contributor to JAMA and The Pharos has resulted in Compassion's Way, A Doctor's Quest into the Soul of Medicine.
Crawshaw examines compassion in the practice of medicine and our everyday world against the backdrop of suffering as an inescapable element of human experience. Calling upon a breadth of disciplines and intersections with leaders in his field, his insightful journey will delight the reader whether he takes on the neglected sense of smell or lights into the greed of the pharmaceutical companies. In the chapter "Oh, Where is the Balm of Gilead?" Crawshaw writes: "I expect to enter my dotage with a vengeance, devoting my final years and energies to a lost scientific cause. What Linus Pauling did for Vitamin C, I plan to do for the therapeutic effects of odors. Yes, I believe the right smell heals. Although odor therapy is perhaps a lost cause, as neglected as the rhinencephalon itself, I plan to raise a cry among the brethren and, if nothing more, a stink upon the wards."
A sampling of chapter headings illustrate the breadth of Crawshaw's uncommon expression: "A Lesson from Chinese Medicine," "Fee for Service from the Poor," "An Epidemic of Suicide among Physicians on Probation," "The National Health Selective Disservice," "The Better Health Business Bureau," "They all Laughed When I Spoke of Greedy Doctors," "African Slavery and Western Medicine," "Nurturing Hate in Psychotherapy," and more.
His amazing story-telling ability takes the reader from bedpans, lepers, and Chinese medicine to doctor suicides, airborne waifs, and threatening KGB agents. While some essays clearly address physicians, none is laden with medical jargon. Crawshaw writes of his concern for ensuring the inclusion of compassion in medical education, health care decisions, and social policymaking, as he cautions, "Beware of social efficiency bereft of reflection that treats compassion as an optional benefit rather than an essential need."
Now retired, Crawshaw is a psychiatrist and taught at the University of Oregon Medical School in addition to writing regular columns for The Pharos of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and Portland Physician, and Journal of the American Medical Association. He has served on dozens of state and national committees serving the cause of improved health care, and was twice selected to be an exchange scholar in the USSR.

The Maverick and the Machine: Governor Dan Walker Tells His Story
ASIN: 0809321483 |
Book Description
Although serious scandal erupted in Illinois Governor Richard Ogilvie’s administration— eight hundred thousand dollars mysteriously appearing in Secretary of State Paul Powell’s shoe boxes and other hiding places, the downfall of two Supreme Court justices for questionable stock dealings, corruption surrounding the Illinois State Fair— Ogilvie’s accomplishments, as Taylor Pensoneau demonstrates, rank him among the best governors in Illinois history.
Perhaps the most important of Ogilvie’s accomplishments during his single term in office (1969–1973) was the passage of the state’s first income tax in 1969. Supporting the income tax took political courage on the part of the new governor, but in doing so he saved the financially crippled state from economic disaster. He also looked far into the future; at a time when few people expressed concern with the environment, Ogilvie created an exemplary and hard-hitting antipollution program. He was in office during the Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1970 and was instrumental in the widespread restructuring of Illinois government.
Viewing Ogilvie as a pivotal figure in Illinois politics during a time of great social and political turmoil, Pensoneau provides a complete political biography. He sheds light on Ogilvie’s military heroics, his political career, and the Illinois elections of 1968, 1970, and 1972.

Book Description
A Short Season is Don Morehead’s bittersweet story of growing up on a Montana ranch during the 1940s. In 1941 his parents eagerly took up residence on a ten-thousand-acre sheep ranch in northern Montana. The entire family was soon caught up in the natural rhythm and grueling work of ranch life, meeting those challenges with energy, patience, and humor. The driving force behind the ranch and family was the father, Bill Morehead, the “hub around which activity spun.” Don especially was drawn into his father’s world, rarely leaving his side, and becoming known as his “small partner.” When his father died suddenly in 1948, Don was left with lingering, irreducible grief and loneliness.
Replete with marvelous details of ranching life, Don Morehead’s story is also a sobering and moving meditation on childhood and the special relationship that can develop between father and son. Morehead returns us to the quiet surprises of the first short season with our parents and helps us better understand the inevitable sadness of moving on.
Customer Reviews:
Growing up on a Montana ranch--like it really was.......2007-04-12
Having done it myself, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this biography reflects growing up on a Montana ranch in the 1930's and 1940's. It is sensitively and well written, and would be enjoyable reading to anyone interested in the subject.
I lived A Short Season with my brother, Don, he remembers well.......1998-07-10
Having grown up on this sheep ranch in Montana, it was achildhood that will always be remember and cherished. My brother madethis even more so with his book, A Short Season. There were so many happy fun times of children, and then there were the times of extreme sadness and sorrow for our family. When my father died our world came to a halt and we had to struggle to gain it back. I think we have done that with the book, it has reunited our family and we have gone back in time and the memories are still so much alive. This book of a Montana childhood will make whom ever reads it go back to their childhood, a feat we seldom do in our modern society, we are so busy and involved in the trials of our own lives we forgot we had a childhood, brothers, sisters and parents who were what we are. Thank you for letting me share this with all of you, Donna M. (nee Morehead) Johnson.

A delightful combination, definitely a keeper..........2005-09-21
This was a stellar pairing of wonderful writers.
"A Little Dare", Jackson
Alisdare "Dare" Westmoreland and Shelly Brockman were high-school and college sweethearts. After 6 years of what appeared to all to be an amazing relationship, Dare decided he was more interested in pursuing a career in the FBI than continuing his relationship with Shelly. Shocked and destroyed, Shelly moved away. Ten years later Dare is the Sheriff of their hometown and Shelly returns after years of self exile.
Shelly returns to town with a 10-year son that Dare doesn't know exists. Having reached that challenging pre-teen age, Shelly decides that it is finally time for Dare to meet his son and to help raise him.
Dare is shocked and surprised that he has a son and commits to doing whatever he can to win his son's love and trust. What Shelly doesn't know is that it is not only his son's heart that Dare has designs on.
This is a delightful story of attempting a second chance at love. In her enjoyable and fine tradition, Ms. Jackson crafts an attention-capturing, fulfilling tale.
"A Younger Man", Alers
When Jerome Kumi Walker encounters Veronica Johnson-Hamlin on the side of the road as she waits for help with her flat tire, he is both impressed and amused at the independent streak that only barely allows her to accept his assistance. When Kumi requests a home-cooked meal as a way for Veronica to repay his favor, she again reluctantly accepts. After sharing that meal, Kumi is strongly drawn to Veronica, while Veronica thinks Kumi - 10 years her junior - is too young and probably too inexperienced for her.
Kumi sets out on a mission to prove Veronica wrong. As he begins to court her he senses that much of her resistance is related to a painful past that she's unwilling to share. Kumi, however, is not deterred, as he is dealing with his own personal family drama, and sets out single-mindedly to woo Veronica.
This tale is satisfying in its allowing each of the characters to grow and develop individually as the romantic interaction between them unfolds. I really enjoyed this story.

A Book of Hope for People in Pain.......1999-09-11
This book does not presume to make sense of pain, but it tells stories of people who have more than just endured, they have risen above their circumstance and grown into something beautiful. This is an excellent book to give people who are hurting, or to whom life has given extraordinary burdens to bear. The overall effect of the book is to give hope for people who have reason to wonder if hope is possible.
