        Book Description

This text is based on the innovative and acclaimed course taught at MIT. The modular approach of the text's content allows adopters the freedom to select only those modules they wish to include in the course. Managing for the Future begins by setting the 'new' organization (a flat, flexible, networked and diverse entity) as the context in which managerial action takes place. The rest of the text works through teams, organizations, and skills. The three lenses (strategic design, political, and cultural) are used to analyze organizations and plan action. The goal is not only to describe the organization of the future, but also show readers how to become better actors within it.

                    Book Description

A Sentimental Journey is a social history of the life and culture of the World War II home front in Wilmington and Southeastern North Carolina. "The Defense Capital of the State," it became a mighty contributor to the war effort and the country's unique wartime boomtown, earning it the right to be proclaimed as "America's World War II City." The area had all the armed forces stationed in large numbers, a shipyard producing 243 cargo vessels, the vital state port, industries at capacity, and German prisoner of war camps. Thousands left to fight; 191 New Hanover County boys died. Two high school graduates received the Medal of Honor. Strategically located, it endured constant civilian defense drills and restrictions, U-boats sinking ships offshore (one fired on a defense plant), and until 1944, the threat of attack. The population nearly tripled. Demands for goods and services including housing, schools, food, and recreation overwhelmed. How officials managed the social, civic, jurisdictional, racial, and governmental complexities during the city's economic heyday-while handling huge construction projects, war workers, citizen stresses, black markets, crime wave, equal justice, and weekend hordes of soldiers-is portrayed through firsthand accounts and the daily newspapers. The author's vivid boyhood remembrances weave through and interpret the story.

                    1 out of 5 stars Mythology.......2006-06-03

In January, 1934, the Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co. began operation of their plant extracting bromine from sea water at Kure Beach. On April 1, they published a 7-page supplement to the Sunday Star-News with full details of the construction, process, personnel, and local involvement.

For the first time in history man extracted an element from sea water. The extracted bromine was converted to ethylene dibromide, the scavenger that allowed tetraethyl lead to prevent knocking in gasoline engines without fouling the engines with
                    lead deposits.

The product of this plant and a second built in Freeport, TX, were vital in the high-octane aviation gasoline that kept Allied planes flying in WW II.

The author completely neglects this significance and concentrates on nurturing a myth of a U-boat attack on the plant.

On the night of 24-25 July, 1943, the plant received a warning and was ordered to shut down about 1:30 AM. I interviewed Carl Moore who was working in the ethylene
dibromide building. He said that after he had shut down the unit he went to the top of the building, the highest in the plant, and saw some escort vessels moving about in the water.
He said no shots were fired. Monroe Shigley was the manager of both the NC and TX plants. He confirmed the shutdown and said no shots were fired.

I applied for and provided the documentation for the historic marker about the plant that was erected. The marker makes no mention of an attack that never happened.

Jones relies on the creator of the attack myth, Horton, for the mythical story, and, worse, for a mythical description of the process. Horton worked in the personnel department and had no reason to be on the plant at 2AM. After the emergency shutdown, he concocted the submarine attack story and has been telling it ever since.

Horton was a local businessman and became a New Hanover county commissioner. The myth grew long legs because it was not possible to refute it absolutely until the 1990s when the world learned of the British success breaking the German Enigma machine codes. It was not possible to employ this information in
attacking U-boats until the U. S. Navy and the Royal Navy deployed hunter-killer groups of escort carriers with destroyers and destroyer escorts to hunt them. Also in the 1990s the complete German U-Boat records were published along with the complete details of anti-submarine actions by Allied ships and aircraft. Then it was confirmed that Doenitz pulled his U-boats away from the U. S. coast in May, 1943. By July of 1943 there was no U-Boat within hundreds of miles of Kure Beach. I provided all of this information to Jones while he was writing his book, but he chose to nurture the myth. The final nail in the coffin of the myth was driven home when a young man reading my collected papers at the NHC Library in February, 2005, referred me to which reported that from June, 1943, the Atlantic U-Boats left their bases without deck guns. Robert Sterns' "Type
VII U-Boats" confirmed that the last deck gun attack took place in the spring of 1942, with the removal of deck guns being ordered November 14, 1942. Any U-Boat prowling the Atlantic in July, 1943, had no gun to attack the bromine plant.

                    Book Description

When people ask, "How did you get here?" I know they are really asking, "How did you, female of color from Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, get here?"

Dr. Rose-Marie Toussaint is unique--a young black woman surgeon specializing in liver and kidney transplants at a major university hospital. How did she get there? In this amazing book Toussaint tells us. Her inspiring story starts when a vodun priest predicts she will grow up to be a physician, then chronicles her rise to the pinnacle of her profession.

Rose-Marie's family struggled not only with her parents' chaotic marriage, but with the seismic changes that were beginning to grip their homeland. When the Toussaints emigrated to Miami, Rose-Marie immersed herself in science and math classes, and her dream of becoming a doctor began to take shape.

But the road to her dream was littered with obstacles: getting into college, making good grades, getting into medical school, and surviving the grueling, soul-crushing rigors that test every surgeon in the making. Add to that Dr. Toussaint's status as a black female in white male-dominated institutions and one can only admire the courage, fortitude, and determination that propelled her to obtain her M.D.--with some help from a few miracles along the way.

As a surgeon, it was her turn to become a miracle worker--for her patients. Dr. Toussaint takes us into hospital rooms to meet desperate patients praying for a life-giving organ, and into the OR to observe the wonder of transplantation. She vividly brings to life the breakneck race against time to prepare transplant patients when an organ suddenly becomes available, the long hours of surgery--sometimes more than 20--that both doctor and patient must endure. And she never forgets that for every life she saves another has been lost.

This is a book full of miracles--not least, Rose-Marie Toussaint's own luminous spirit, which lights up every page. To share her journey is a rare opportunity to experience the faith and resilience of a woman dedicated to making miracles happen.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    4 out of 5 stars One Woman's Struggle & Inspiration.......2002-11-22

Rose-Marie Toussaint's autobiographical novel Never Question the Miracle: A Surgeon's Story is a touching tale about the struggles of an African American woman whose lifelong dream is to become a surgeon. In plain and soemtimes simple language, Toussaint transports the reader to various times in her life, each fraught with strong and unique emotion. Toussaint shies away from nothing in this detailed account of her personal triumph over numerous obstacles such as her troubled childhood in Haiti, her draining years at college as a pre-med student, her failed relationships and her long years in residency. It is the story of a journey through life and the importance of not giving up hope.
The book begins with Toussaint struggling amid the limitations of transplant surgery. She tells of sick patients desperately in need of a liver transplant but too poor to afford one, while in another hospital a wealthy patient who lacks the will to survive is given preference because the family can afford to pay for the transplant. She tells of the reality of organ transplantation, how doctors have to fight with insurance companies to convince them to authorize the operations. These social injustices and bureaucratic intricacies of the medical world show the reader that there is much to question about the system. She aligns herself on the side of the poor, often times African American patients, whom she sympathizes with since she herself has had to overcome similar barriers.
The author then turns the spotlight on herself and begins with her autobiography which starts in Haiti; it is a childhood marked by poverty and a strong sense of religion, a blend of both Christianity and voodoo. She examines the various relationships that influenced her childhood and speaks openly about her mother's abusive nature and her father's desertion of the family. The subsequent journey to Miami and the reunion of her family there gives Toussaint the strength she will need to apply to a difficult premedical college program. From then on her family remains a solid backbone of support throughout the rest of Toussaint's journey.
From her college years on Toussaint shares her struggles without apology; she tells of the disappointment she felt at not getting accepted to medical school and her frustration with the low level jobs she took as a result. Even her heartbreaking personal relationships with men are included in the story. When at last she is accepted into a medical school and starts to make sense of the schooling process, her relief is contagious. During medical school, Toussaint is faced with considerable amounts of prejudice both because she is a woman and because she is African American. As she proves herself to the older doctors and professors, she is also proving to herself that she can accomplish her goals.
Toussaint's story draws the reader into her mind as she progresses thorugh her journey to ultimately become a transplant surgeon. Her thoughts and reflections make up the bulk of the book and center around the challenges she faces everyday. The reader watches her make mistakes and learn from them. Her story is continuously growing and developing as she matures. it is a story meant to inspire people to achieve their dreams, no matter what boulders lie in the way. It is a story about not giving up hope and underneath it all it is also a story meant to incite change for the sake of the thousands of poor people in this country whose insurance companies will not pay the price to save their lives.

Rose-Marie is a friend of mine. Because she is humble and unassuming, I had only a hint of what a treasure load of talent, inspiration and skill she really is. Her book tells her story - a young woman from Haiti, literally pulling herself up by her own boot straps to become a surgeon at Howard University Hospital specializing in liver transplant surgery. She has met every challenge that blacks and women must meet, and she has conquered them all with brilliance and understanding. I hope you have time to look at her book. It's a real inspiration for young people with dreams.

The final legacy of the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Labyrinth of Solitude

Itinerary records the evolution of the political ideas of Octavio Paz, the great Mexican writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. It is an intellectual autobiography, in a sense, but also a sentimental and even passionate one. In his thoughts Paz realized the past was inseparable from the present. And so he tells the story of his journey through time, from youth to adulthood. It is not a straight line, nor is it a circle; it is instead a spiral that turns ceaselessly over, bringing into view a time seventy years in the past and the actions of today. It is the final work by a great thinker and a magnificent writer.

5 out of 5 stars "Words Became My Dwelling Place, the Air My Tomb".......2003-07-04

Poet Octavio Paz has journeyed across much of the twentieth century landscape in this short book of essays. As a son of La Malinche (see his LABYRINTH OF SOLITUDE), he maintained a clearheaded sense of balance while his contemporaries were losing their heads over communism, surrealism, existentialism, and all the other isms that characterized that time.

What has always amazed me that Paz was at one and the same time both a truthsayer and a poet. Even to someone like myself whose Spanish is less than idiomatic, his poetry possesses a beauty and limpidity that are almost never met in combination. Only Emily Dickinson of the poets I know has this quality. One of my favorites is the poem "Epitafio sobre ninguna piedra" from which the title of this review is taken.

Now that communism is all but extinct, one forgets that only a short while ago it held so many intellectuals in thrall. Looking at our situation today, Paz concludes that "if I am sure of one thing it is that we are living an interregnum; we are walking across a zone whose ground is not solid; its foundations, it basis has evaporated. If we wish to climb free from the marsh and not sink into mud we should quickly work out a morality and a politics." I think that, as a people, we have not. I am reminded of Yeats's "The Second Coming":

                          The best lack all conviction
While the worst are full of passionate intensity

A final word: Toward the end is a beautiful little essay entitled "Imaginary Gardens: A Memoir" which, while responding negatively to a proposal for a public park, lets loose a Proustian flood of memory regarding the past of the town where Paz was raised, Mixcoac.

This little book, which can be read in a single sitting, deserves a wide readership. I loved it and feel impelled to seek out more of Paz's work.

4 out of 5 stars an intellectual journey of the mind.......2001-05-14

This is NOT an autobiographical essay, although you might suppose so after the opening story of his exile to California and then later back to Mexico where he was treated as a stranger. This episode serves more as a kernel from which grows his political and social education and experience. Paz briefly traces his political growth from childhood to maturity, through Mexico, the Yucatan (which he points out is so very different from the rest of Mexico), Paris, Spain, India, etc... The editor does his best to provide background history, but be warned that Paz assumes you have the same strong knowledge of Mexican history that he does. I though the highlight was his piercing conclusion about the evil in ourselves, "Evil is human, exclusively human. But not all is evil in humans. Evil nests in their awareness, in their freedom. In there also lies the remedy, the answer to evil... to fight evil is to fight ourselves. And that is the meaning of history."

The writing is clear throughout -- Paz writes well in prose form as well as poetry. A bit hard to follow sometimes, but aren't all intellectual journeys?

This was a great book; whitty, funny, suspenseful, from a more innocent time. An Arizona/Texas woman's life experiences in the pre and post-technology days.. Great for "young" adults of ALL ages. I recommend from 12 - 100 year age group.
