Rethinking work & Family.......2000-03-29
The work and family challenge: rethinking employment is a welcome publication for anybody who is a researcher in the area of work-family. Edited by Suzan and Jermey Lewis, the book is spilt in 3 parts. Part 1 deals with the context for change and puts employment and work/family issues within a european perspective. Chapter 2 by Peter Moss (Reconciling Employment and Family Responsibilities: A European Perspective) is of particular note. Moss provides an interesting an analysis of the way in which the EU and European memeber stated has approached the problem of reconciling work and home. Part 2 deals with policy and practice and presents work on the implementation of work-home policies. Of particular interest to me was chapter 4 (The Family Friendly Employer in Europe) and chapter 8 (Developing and Implementing policies: Midland Bank's Experience). Part 3 concerns barriers to the effectiveness of policies and strategies

Book Description
This monograph reports on the recent developments in the area of interplanetary and pre-solar dust grains. Chemical and isotope analyses of dust are discussed, especially with the aim to study the origin and evolution of interplanetary dust. Recent observations of extraterrestrial dust obtained with LDEF, Galileo and Ulysses are presented.
Several velocity mechanisms for dust particles are discussed, in addition to their impact on cosmic or cometary dust grain capture devices.
This volume is specially intended for research scientists and advanced (graduate) students in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and geo and cosmochemists. Scientists in related fields, like the environmental sciences (especially researchers of artificial debris from rockets and boosters), are also likely to be interested in this work.

The Only Guide Available to This Region.......2002-12-15
And that's a complement in itself.
For the short term visitor, this book will be a good read.
It has lots of nice photos, background information and good descriptions of the major tourist areas of Ambon, Lease, Ternate and Banda.
Unfortunately information on other islands (even on rather easily accessible Seram or Halmahera) is extremely limited, and is usually supplemented by lengthy references to old literature like the Malay Archipelago by Wallace, or even descriptions of places based upon hearsay. Needless to say, lots of that is wrong.
This may just be a blessing in disguise however, as most remoter islands of Maluku are ill-equipped to cater for tourists, and those determined to visit such places will find discovering them on their own all the more exciting.
I'd still recommend this book for anyone interested in Maluku, but would warn against expecting too much from it!
In fact, general guidebooks to Indonesia by Lonely Planet and Rough Guides (strictly the 1st edition only!) contain just as much info on the sights and facilities of Maluku as this book, and are certainly more up to date.
But if you find all these too limited, you will just have to wait and see things for yourself!

Book Description
arsenalpulp.com :
Billeh Nickerson tells it like it is: a wry and at times outrageous chronicler of contemporary gay life, written for those who can take it like a man, or at least read about it without squirming. In these charming and very funny essays, Billeh writes with disarming sweetness about love, sex, relationships, and subjects that might even make the women of Sex in the City blanch with embarrassment.
On occasion, Billeh is a Miss Manners for our times: after all, what would you do if you saw a friend at a nude beach who had toilet paper stuck to his genitals? Or what to do with friends who shave their pubes into artistic patterns, or those who insist on washing their dildoes in the dishwasher? Billeh also writes about what it feels like to be the token gay at a house party; laments the lack of Speedo-watching at the Summer Olympics now that bodysuits are the fashion the day; and describes what it feels like when the hot guy you've taken home turns out to be a Star Wars freak. (Nobody's perfect.)
More naked than David Sedaris, more fraudulent than David Rakoff, Billeh Nickerson's invigorating tonics are just what the doctor ordered. He's willing to explore new life and new civilization, and to go where no fag has gone before.
Customer Reviews:
Toasted wry.......2004-01-08
In this slim volume of outrageously humorous essays, Nickerson offers his life up in all its queer glory. From eating bananas on an airplane to how exactly to clean one's dildos to other uses for a baby's changing table, he makes us laugh with his zany tales and keeps us anticipating his next comic feat. Easily compared to Michael Thomas Ford and Kirk Read, Billeh Nickerson is a fresh wry voice giving life a tweak.

Book Description
Jade never wanted a boyfriend. She's all about freedom, excitement, the unknown.
She's definitely not about getting hurt.
But she's messed all that up. Big time. She's fallen for Jeremy Aames. Hard. And now the not-getting-hurt thing is out the window.
Customer Reviews:
Book 22 in the SVH: Senior Year Series.......2004-03-19
Despite the title (which is, like, the epitome of valley girl slang), "So Not Me" is a great SVHSY book. It picks up right where the previous book, "The It Guy," left off: with Conner McDermott's intervention. His reaction (summed up perfectly in his beginning journal entry: "What. The. Hell.") is to run away, hightailing it up the California coast to Red Bluff to find his estranged father, who is a compatible match with him: he's lazy, brooding, and an alcoholic. I feared it'd take another couple books for Conner to find his dad, confront him, etc., but thankfully this subplot wasn't as long-drawn-out as some others in this series.
Romance-wise, the following happens: Elizabeth Wakefield does a little "unintentional" flirting with Conner's best friend, Evan Plummer, while he's away. And Jade Wu has done the unthinkable: she's fallen for Jeremy Aames, despite priding herself on being a player. Jeremy, on the other hand, is treading a little more carefully, especially after she cheated on him.
"So Not Me" really shows how self-absorbed a lot of these characters are, especially in regard to Andy Marsden's sexuality crisis. After an indifferent response to his coming out, he finally gets some decent support from--of all people--his ex-girlfriend, Six Hanson. By the end, things are looking better for him for a change.
BOOK.......2000-11-24
Ok, first of all i think Jeremy and Jade make THE worst couple. Jeremy deserves so much better than JAde, like Jess. Jess is everything that he ever wanted in a girl and shes right in front of him and hes ignoring the fact that she still is i love with him. Instead he's falling for Jade AGAIN after he caught her with another guy. Now he Elizabeth and Conner thing is not looking good. Conner took off, and is with his long-lost father somewhere in Cali. All i know for sure is that if Conner doesn't come back soon then Liz is gonna fall for Evan, Conner's best friend. :(
Ehhhh.......2000-10-24
this book wanst as good as the others. there was no reference to ken or will or melissa. they are the most interesting charcters, they def. should be in some coming up.
So Not Right...?.......2000-10-21
This book was *really* fast-paced, but I think it climaxed a lot of the events that had to happen. Jade has fallen for Jeremy - the first guy she's ever truly fallen for, in fact - but you end up wondering, does she really mean it...and does she deserve him? Andy talks to Six, the first person who will really listen to him, and she convinces him to tell his parents about how he's pretty sure he's gay. When he comes out, his parents are surprised, and run him down with a few questions. But it really isn't the death situation he expected. Will still refuses to see Melissa, who misses him and desperately wants him to at least *talk* to her. Conner has bolted after Liz made the mistake of saying, "We're here because we love you" and headed to find his father in upper Red Bluff, California. He ends up staying with him and sending an e-mail to Megan informing her where he is...but not when he's coming back. Liz is falling apart and meanwhile Evan has become like a support for her. Tia mistakens it by thinking that two seconds after Conner's gone, Liz has immediately gotten together with his best friend and how sleazy is that? Liz is shocked and tells Tia that's totally ridiculous. She herself is not so sure about how she feels about Evan, though. He's a friend, sure - but could she ever consider him as more? Maria has alienated herself from Ken and frankly, I think that's great. They were never good for each other anyway, plus, his whole "instant-connection-with-Melissa" thing is hurl-inducing. The whole point is, this wasn't one of the better SY books, but there definitely have been worse. Hopefully Jeremy will come to his senses and knock out Jade, get back together with Jess, and Conner will come to HIS senses and return to Sweet Valley. So, overall - this book was all right.
a great book!.......2000-10-18
This book was awsome! At first I hated Jade because of what she did to Jeremy and Jessica, but now I see that she really likes Jeremy. Truely. Maria should just forget about Ken. He was a jerk and just dissed her for his new world, which revolves entirely around football. Andy made some big decisions invoving being gay, and I think it's great that he made them, but he shouldn't have been so hard on his friends for not knowing exactly what he was going through. They had a good reason to be distracted, with all the stuff Conners been putting them through. I think he needs more help than they can give him, and Elizabeth needs some support. As for her and Evan, I think he is exactly what she needs right now. Evan is a great guy, and I think him and Liz should hook up.

What an incredible writer.......2005-11-06
I haven't yet read the book but I've known and read Seabury for almost 20 years. As my editor for many years Seabury time and again proved what an incredible writer he is. His wit and humor is only equaled by the great Patrick McManus. Blair weaves his way through a story without wasting a single word and involves his readers to paint mental pictures as the story unfolds without knowing you're doing it. His writing is that powerful. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I'm sure it will be a must-read.
I wrote it.......2005-11-03
Listen: I wrote the book, so you might expect I'd give it 5 stars.
I just thought you'd like to know what it's about. So ...
Here's a book guaranteed to "perk" up your morning coffee break, proving that tall tales can be short. Learn to distinguish a terrorist from a mother and her baby, or how to do the beer curl to get in shape for football season. Meet Stummick, who does nothing but hang out all day, and B.B. Hardbody, a woman of great wisdom and beauty (who would gleefully strangle the author if he wrote anything else). Shake hands with characters like Grizzly Hemingway, a fly fisher who says beer coolers bounce because ale is made with hops. Each story will put a smile on your face and get you through the rest of the day - no matter what kind of geek your boss is.

Book Description
This chronologically organized introduction to the Western humanities (art, music, history, literature, and drama) establishes the historical context of each era before the arts are discussed. Hundreds of illustrations appear throughout the text, "Personal Perspectives" boxes bring to life the events of the day, and brief sections at the end of each chapter describe the cultural legacy of the era discussed. Volume II of The Western Humanities covers the period from the Renaissance through the present.
Customer Reviews:
The essential elements of the Western tradition (Volume 2).......2004-01-31
This is the fifth edition of Volume II of "The Western Humanities" by Roy Matthews and F. DeWitt Platt, covering the cultural achievements of Western civilization in terms of art, music, literature, philosophy, theater, film, and the other arts, from the Renaissance to the Present. The two chapters on the Renaissance are in both volumes of "The Western Humanities," which allows for institutional differences on where various schools decide to break the study of Western humanities into two courses. However, what attracted me to "The Western Civilization" was that in addition to the two textbooks, there were not only a pair of additional books with readings from literature and philosophy, but also a CD with music.
For example, when studying the Age of Reason (1700-1789) students will learn about the Enlightenment, the great powers, and cultural trends in Chapter 16 of this textbook. In the companion collection of readings they will read Pope's "Essay on Man," along with excerpts from Voltaire's "Candide," Rousseau's Confessions," Kant's "Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment," and Wollstonescrft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman." Then, on the companion CD, they would get to listen to Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" and Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony No. 94.
As the fifth edition of "The Western Humanities, Volume II: The Renaissance to the Present," emphasizing the linkages between cultural expression and historical conditions. Previous editions had expanded coverage of the contributions of women and other artists outside the traditional canon and added a multicultural dimension that looked at what was happening outside the Western tradition. This fifth edition expands coverage of Islamic civilization, obviously in response to current events.
"The Western Humanities" is organized chronologically into twenty-one chapters, the last 11 of which are in this second volume. The first two chapters cover the Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance followed by one on the Northern Renaissance. Following a pair of chapters on the Baroque, Matthews and Platt break the last three centuries of the previous millennium into the Age of Reason (a.k.a., the Enlightenment), the age of revolution (primarily the industrial one), the triumph of the bourgeoisie, the age of early modernism, the age of the masses, and the age of anxiety and beyond.
Each chapter begins by establishing the material conditions of the era (historical, political, economic, and social) and then presenting the crucial points that defined the culture during that period (major themes, issues, and problems of the period). The second half of each chapter focuses on the cultural expression of the period, including not only ideas in philosophy, history, religion, and science, but also the cultural artifacts of art, music, drama, literature, and (eventually) film. This shows the attempt to balance the historical background with the cultural and artistic achievements, and each chapter concludes with a brief section covering the cultural legacy of that period.
Among the special features are "Windows on the World," a series of two-page timelines that outline the most important historical events and cultural achievements in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, which appear between most of the chapters. "Personal Perspectives" are excerpts from primary sources and original documents that allow students to hear the voices of participants and witnesses in the historical and cultural events described in the text. At the start of the book there is "A Humanities Primer: How to Understand the Arts," that introduces readers to the understanding and appreciation of cultural works (defining and explaining terms and concepts). The back of the book includes an "Appendix, Writing for the Humanities: Research Papers and Essay Examinations," a Glossary, and an Index.
The focus here is on the essential elements and works of the Western tradition, which I see as being less information translating into more understanding and retention, which is certainly something I can appreciate. But as I indicated earlier, what I especially like is how students will get to read extended excerpts from the literature of these times and listen to the music.
Volume I of The Western Humanities covers prehistory through the Renaissance.

IT NEVER GOT HERE!!!.......2007-09-14
I would like my money back, because I have been waiting for this book over a month now, and had to go buy one from the bookstore after having had a quiz and still no book. I am sadly disappointed in my affiliations with Amazon and this seller. I have had no complaints up until this point and now would definitely reconsider before buying anything else!
Great if you like that sortof thing!.......2005-10-04
Great if you like that sort of thing to read. I have to read it for my req'd college class, so I'm not in love with it, but it's good if you have to read it.
The essential elements of the Western tradition (Volume 1).......2004-01-13
I have been laying the groundwork for putting together a two-semester Humanities course, which has meant checking out potential textbooks. What attracted me to "The Western Humanities" by Roy T. Matthews and F. DeWitt Platt was that in addition to the two textbooks, there were not only a pair of additional books with readings from literature and philosophy, but also a pair of CDs with music. So, for example, when students are studying the High Middle Ages, students learn all about feudalism, medieval Christianity and the church, and the equilibrium between the spiritual and the secular in the text of the chapter, which includes looks at the art and architecture of the period. The corresponding readings for this chapter would include "The Song of Roland," Chretien de Troyes' "Lancelot," Marie de France's "Lais" (Lays), Thomas Aquinas' "Summa Theologica," and Dante's "The Divine Comedy." Then on the CD there is the hymn "O Pastor Animarum" by Hildegard of Bingen (obviously, music selections are rarer when you are dealing with the Renaissance and earlier periods).
This is the fifth edition of "The Western Humanities, Volume I: Beginnings Through the Renaissance," which places the achievements of Western culture within their historical contexts, emphasizing the linkages between cultural expression and historical conditions. Previous editions had expanded coverage of the contributions of women and other artists outside the traditional canon and added a multicultural dimension that looked at what was happening outside the Western tradition. This fifth edition expands coverage of Islamic civilization, obviously in response to current events.
"The Western Humanities" is organized chronologically into twenty-one chapters, the first 12 of which are in this first volume, with the two Renaissance chapters reprinted in the second volume to adjust for where it comes in the curriculum of various institutions. The first six chapters in the first volume includes the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome and constitute the initial "ancient" period of Western civilization (3000 B.C. to A.D. 500). The next two chapters constitute a transitional period, with the end of the Roman Empire and the rise of Islam. The second period (500 to 1500) looks at when the West became centered in Europe and was largely dominated by the Christian church. The third period (1400 to present) is the story of the birth of the modern world.
The back of the book includes an "Appendix, Writing for the Humanities: Research Papers and Essay Examinations," an eleven-page Glossary, and an Index.
I was surprised that the main part of this textbook is only 351 pages long, even with all the photographs, most of which are in color (and most of which are big enough that you can pick out some of the important details). The focus here is on the essential elements and works of the Western tradition, which I see as being less information translating into more understanding and retention, which is certainly something I can appreciate. But as I indicated earlier, what I especially like is how students will get to read extended excerpts from the literature of these times and listen to the music. Now, if I can just get these classes scheduled...

Book Description
The European Community and Latin America profiles the power and goals of the European Community and examines the Community's past relations with Latin America and the techniques for their management. Factors significant for this relationship's future are analyzed: the global setting; the two regions' internal conditions; the potential of each to meet the other's needs; and the procedures for handling interregional affairs. Attention is given to the political/security interests of the two regions and the attractiveness, to each, of closer relations with other parts of the world.

When civilizaton falls, I'll be ready!.......2007-07-14
This book is well written, easy to read and full of useful information on how to survive out in the wild places. Anyone planning for the end of civilization (or just a fun weekend camping in the woods) should read this book.
"A Treasure".......2007-04-20
when i say treasure i don't use that term lightly. i originally read this book in it's entirety and really enjoyed it, then put it down for awhile. However, I have spent numerous hours in the outdoors as of late and have found this as a guide to just about anything i want to do in the outdoors.
I have used it to guide me through making baskets and containers in the wilderness, (and an easter basket for my wife), for skinning a wild animal, for making knifes, arrows, etc. from flint and bone, for guiding me to some edible wild treats. I could go on and on about the uses for this book. And even if this book isn't complete on a particular subject it will guide you to a book that does. Whether it's to one of his books or another field guide series.
Good place to start.......2007-02-11
This book is a great place to start if you're interested in learning outdoor survival. Very practical, not just what to do, but how to think when you're if you're stuck in a survival situation. Clear directions, simple illustrations. Not as dry as, say, a Boy Scout manual.
Survival at it's best........2007-01-10
Tom Brown is a mastermind.I got this book read it,then got all of his field guides. Outdoor survival is my love and Tom Brown has taken me to a whole other level. BUY IT!
Keep this in your pack. .......2006-07-26
This book is the best starting place for those wishing to learn about wilderness survival. The book is well organized and a pleasure to read. The subject matter can be dry, but Mr. Brown does a good job of interlacing his personal experiences with the instructional material. There are two reasons I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. 1) I think it could use more diagrams and pictures. Without an instructor by your side it would be easy to misunderstand some of the more technical skills covered. 2) This book is mainly for temperate regions. While much of the material is useful for any climate, it is missing tropical and artic specific information. Mr. Brown's knowledge of survival and tracking techniques is second to none. His field guides should be on every outdoor enthusiast's book shelf, and this book should be in your pack with you at all times.

A great read.......2007-09-07
Extremely well written! I never lost interest. If you enjoy the outdoors and like to camp, then you'll love this book. If you have kids and want them to enjoy the outdoors and discover what it would be like to live off of the land, then this book is for you. If you'd like to teach your kids how to survive in an emergency situation then this is a good start.
I definitely recommend buying the book and keeping it as a reference guide on your coffee table.
A great read and informative book.......2006-11-11
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in their children's future and well being, as well as strengthening the relationship they share with their children. It is also a great selection for anyone, of any age, who is interested in learning wilderness survival skills and living closer to the Earth. Do not be fooled by the title, this book contains some very advanced techniques that are only taught in some of Tom's most advanced classes. The skills are presented in an easy to learn/easy to teach format and each skill is presented in a way that opens up opportunities to have lots of fun with your children and at the same time pass on invaluable knowledge to them. The book covers most of the basic survival skills such as; Shelter building, where to find water, basic fire making, finding food, easily identifiable edible plants, making tools, cordage, erecting traps and snares, stalking, basic tracking as well as some very advanced techniques such as; camouflage, wide angle vision, night stalking and tracking, lost proofing, Scout games and activities and most importantly a general respect for the Earth and our environment. Highly recommended to anyone, parent or not, who is interested in learning or teaching nature survival skills, and living a more fulfilling life than modern society offers us or our children.
Unique and inspiring.......2002-04-08
This book can be useful to people of any religion. As a Christian, I was not offended, although I agree that the author definitely does not share my spiritual beliefs. We can all benefit from connecting to nature and developing a greater level of understanding/awareness/respect of the beauty that surrounds us... especially as children. Do not pass by this wonderful book because of a religious bias. Remove the wheat from the chaff, absorb the good information and ignore the rest.
I like it.......1999-04-02
I present Stone Age technology in school programs. I find Brown's information quite useful.
You, and your kids, can learn to pay attention to nature........1998-08-08
An excellent resource for parents, teachers, etc. I even found many of the suggestions useful for myself and other adult friends. I used many of the exercises with 3rd through 6th graders as a Girl Scout leader.
Be surprised at how little of the natural world you appreciate on a daily basis. Learn to really see and hear.
Also good for general awareness building and personal security issues for kids in urban environments. A good read.
