Book Description
Focusing on the Great Plains states of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota between 1929 and 1945, Down and Out on the Family Farm examines small family farmers and the Rural Rehabilitation Program designed to help them. Historian Michael Johnston Grant reveals the tension between economic forces that favored large-scale agriculture and political pressure that championed family farms, and the results of that clash.
The Great Depression and the drought of the 1930s lay bare the long-term economic instability of the rural Plains. The New Deal introduced the Rural Rehabilitation Program to assist lower- to middle-income farmers throughout the country. This program combined low-interest loans with managerial advice. However, these efforts were not enough to compete with the growing scale of agriculture or to counter the recurring drought of the era. Regional conservatism, environmental factors, and fiscal constraints limited the federal aid offered to thousands of families.
Grant provides extensive primary source research from government documents, as well as letters, newspaper editorials, and case studies that focus on individual lives and fortunes. He examines who these families were and what their farms looked like, and he sheds light on the health problems and other personal concerns that interfered with the economic viability of many farms. The result is a provocative study that gives a human face to the hardships and triumphs of modern agriculture.

Book Description
The discipline of nonlinear dynamics has developed explosively in all areas of physics over the last two decades. This comprehensive primer summarizes the main developments in the mathematical theory of dynamical systems, chaos, pattern formation and complexity. An introduction to mathematical concepts and techniques is given in the first part of the book, before being applied to stellar, interstellar, galactic and large scale complex phenomena in the Universe. Oded Regev demonstrates the possible application of ideas including strange attractors, Poincaré sections, fractals, bifurcations, and complex spatial patterns, to specific astrophysical problems.
Customer Reviews:
Regev's Chaos and Complexity in Astrophysics.......2007-10-03
"Very readable, engaging and understandable. Regev offers insights into and explanations of complex concepts and methods by using frameworks familiar to students (particularly of astronomy) on the graduate level. I found that there are a number of typos and misprints. However, the author offers a useful, detailed and up-to-date errata that can be accessed on his site (http://physics.technion.ac.il/~regev/erratum.pdf)."
-Timothy Purcell
An excellent introduction for astrophysicists to a wide range of topics in nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory.......2007-09-12
The book gives the essential details of such areas as bifurcation theory, strange attractors, fractals, and Hamiltonian systems, filling a gap in existing astrophysical literature. Comprehensive descriptions of those topics in astrophysics to which chaos theory has made significant contributions (e.g., the theory of stellar pulsations; dynamics of the solar system) are also included. The fact that the text is essentially self-contained makes it attractive for both graduate students and researchers to use.
O. Bloch.......2007-09-06
The book is written very clearly and it explains difficult concepts in a comprehensible way. I enjoyed exploring and learning from it.
instructive.......2007-09-05
a good guide book to the literature in this subject, lots of facts and readable. I have learned plenty.
An excellent text on nonlinear dynamics in strophysics in particular, but on nonlinear dynamics in general.......2007-09-05
I considered adapting it for a graduate class I taught on stability and non-normality. It didn't happened, because eventually I decided to write my own notes in the hope it will prompt me to write my own book on non-linear dynamics (has not happened yet...)
However, I was deeply impressed by this book. It is very clearly written, very thorough yet tractable, and at times witty. Most importantly, some issues I consider subtle, tricky or often overlooked or addressed head-on here, meticulously , scientifically soundly and, astonishingly, in a manner I think is suitable for even first or second year graduate students.
In short, I STRONGLY recommend this book to anybody interested in nonlinear dynamics, in the heavens or on earth...

Book Description
From award-winning science writer Barry Parker, the only book to consider chaos theory in all areas of astronomy.
Customer Reviews:
Cosmos Book Leaves Mere Confusion, Not Chaos in its Wake.......1997-07-29
As a caption to a photograph early in the book, Parker writes, "A field of stars. Some of them may be chaotic." To term an object "chaotic" is meaningless unless one specifies what behavior (its motion, its fluctuations in brightness) is displaying chaotic characteristics. This ambiguous and imprecise tone permeates the rest of the text, hindering a clear understanding of the sometimes counter-intuitive concepts of chaos.
_Chaos in the Cosmos_ aims to be a layperson's introduction to chaos, with applications to problems in planetary science, astrophysics and cosmology. Despite the careful attention Parker has paid to describing technical concepts in plain language, his explanations are not clearly constructed, and on several occasions include factual errors, contradictions and misunderstandings that lead me to guess he is not well-conversant on the subject himself.
Anyone who has read the fine work of James Gleick in his book, _Chaos_, will be disappointed with _Chaos in the Cosmos_. Readers already familiar with the history of chaos science and its basic concepts may find useful the discussion of recent research, and the particular focus on astronomical applications (though this is brief and confined to the last half of the book). Those who are new to the study of chaos will glean some knowledge from reading the initial chapters, but I do not recommend it as an introduction to the discipline, since the inaccurate and inefficient explanations are misleading to the novice.

A much needed focus on cosmic christology........1999-08-13
This is a good book that makes many fine points. I found especially interesting the link between ancient Jewish Wisdom literature and the subsequent developement of New Testament views of the personification of Wisdom in Jesus Christ. Alse good was Edward's pointing out of the importance of respecting Creations' Creator by honoring the Creation, hence an Ecological Theology. It is a fact that much of our Human pollution of the world is a blatant sign of our being sinful/selfish fallen beings. That last line being my own take on the Environmental Crisis. I recommend this book.

Book Description
Southeast Asia is a world filled with mystery and intrigue, and one that doesn't give up its secrets easily—as the author and his wife soon found out! Walking To Singapore is an often hilarious, but always informative look at the daily lives and disparate cultures of the region, and provides insight into the history of the region, the best (and most bizarre) foods, even religious temple etiquette. The book celebrates the beauty of Southeast Asia: swimming with sea turtles in Malaysia, seeing the sunrise from the rim of a smoking volcano, the Grand Palace in Bangkok, and watching wild orangutans waking at sunrise in Borneo. The author's adventures also take them to some of the most magnificent historical and archaeological wonders of the world such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Burma's city of 4,000 temples at Bagan, and the magnificent Buddhist and Hindu monuments of Borobudor in Indonesia. Helpful as a guide to budget travel in Southeast Asia—for about $10 per day!—Walking To Singapore also recounts some of the difficulties and downright danger that await—from an all night journey along the Road to Mandalay in Burma, to leeches in Sumatra, to grenade attacks in Phnom Penh!
Customer Reviews:
Extremely funny, informative book!.......2001-10-17
This book is hilarious!...and informative. The travel essays tell how it really is to travel in some of these incredibly remote, but incredibly wonderful parts of SE Asia. Unlike most travel guides that merely descibe the points of interest, without honestly telling how difficult it can be to get there--without doing it the "tour group way"--this book tells how YOU can do it on your own...but gives some advice to ease the trip as well as to caution the traveler. Every chapter also provides tons of information on the history and politics, etc. of the region, too. But what I like most is that the author encourages everyone to give independent travel a try. And by traveling as the author and his wife did, anyone can do it on a shoestring budget. Personally, I would RATHER eat and do as the locals do; the author shows that it's not only possible but very cheap and a lot of fun!

Book Description
The old man's will leaves a chunk of money and a Cadillac convertible, but stipulates that his body must be buried in Las Vegas. Harlan Q is ready to make the trip in order to get away from Paps, his Bible-thumping father, who doesn't take to money made by cards and whiskey. Through a little creative coaxing, Harlan Q convinces Paps to transport the quickly ripening body of his grandfather in the back of their station wagon, but it's a long, hot trip.
As they drive the body back to its home, Harlan Q and his father pick up Warrior, a Hollywood-bound, Zen-minded actor-in-training. Warrior helps Harlan Q forgive his prejudices about Paps's single minded-approach to life. Moreover, the trip forces Paps to question his own feelings about his long gone daddy, which may help as he tries to understand his rebellious son.
From the book... The first time I met my grandfather, he was laid up on a porcelain prep table at the Hamilton-Johnston Funeral Home. His eyes were wide open and he had a grin on his face, but he was dead as a doornail.

fine novel.......2006-05-27
Hemphill's debut novel, told in a fresh voice with a southern twang, is a delight. She intertwines a difficult father/son relationship, religious arguments, a road trip with a coffin in the car,and an unlikely friendship; the result is a moving story well worth reading.

A reference no collection should be without.......2006-08-20
WOMEN AND WAR: A HISTORICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT is a reference no collection should be without: from specialty military collections to general-interest public library holdings, WOMEN AND WAR offers the browser and researcher an A-Z compendium of facts organized by topic. Listings by both war and biographical sketch of individuals allow for easy cross-referencing, while listings often run several pages charting history, culture, and including bibliographic references at the end of each article. Small black and white photos, cross references within volumes for further follow up reading, and an attention to detail make WOMEN AND WAR a recommended pick.

It's impressive how much National Geographic can squeeze into a small book. Each entry tells how big the park is, describes its flavor, indicates when it's best to go and how to get there, and includes an elegantly useful map. A detailed tour of the sights includes glorious pictures (450 total), highlighting the best of each park. But practicalities are not neglected: entries include headquarters' addresses and phones, entrance fees, facilities for the disabled, accommodations, pet regulations, and what there is to do. And so it goes for each of the 54 parks--it's a gem of a guide.
Book Description
Now in its fourth edition, the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America is the ultimate birder's field guide. Sturdy, portable, and easy-to-use, it features the most complete information available on every bird species known to North America. This revised edition features 250 completely updated range maps, new plumage and species classification information, specially commissioned full-color illustrations, and a superb new index that allows birders in the field to quickly identify a species.
The National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Fourth Edition will continue to be a bestseller among the fastest-growing sector in the U.S. travel marketthe nearly 25 million people who travel each year specifically to observe wild birds.
Customer Reviews:
The BEST guide to the National Parks.......2006-09-26
We originally owned an older edition of this book and just purchased this to replace it. We have been to many National Parks over the years and have found this guide to be the best one out there. The drives as listed are fantastic... you won't miss anything if you have this book along with you!
Outstanding Resource.......2006-01-07
I obtained the first edition of this book over ten years ago, and have kept that along with the latest edition in my book collection ever since. At that time I had never been to a national park, but this little book insipired me to visit 35 of them, volunteer in two, and work seasonally as a ranger at one.
This book is packed with useful and interesting information about each of the parks, and it is a pleasure to read even when not planning a trip. I highly recommend it.
Best comprehensive guide to the national parks.......2005-09-20
We recently purchased this book just before our four-national-parks tour. The book not only gives you an overview of the parks, practical information such as how to get there, and nearby lodging etc., it has very good recommendation of must-see stops, and different levels of hikes you can take and what to expect. We used the book at every park and it helped us effectively use our time and it is a joy to read even without going to the parks.
Excellent guide for National Parks.......2005-08-29
If you like to visit the National Parks or just want to know more about them, this is a great source of information. All National Parks, Monuments, Wildlife Refuges and some National Forests are covered. It is full of pictures and maps that look great. Nice all in one book.
Great Introduction To The National Parks.......2004-11-30
This is an excellent book to use as a planning guide for trips to any of the National Parks in the US. I have been to many of the parks, and without exception the book's advice about how to get there, when to go, what to look for, etc., is excellent in every way. The book is filled with excellent color photography, and accompanying explanatory text with detailed entrance information that is particularly useful in some of the busier parks. There is also some good introductory safety information presented, but as always, it is a good idea to talk to local authorities when arriving (this is especially a good idea in the Alaska parks, many of which are veritably full of bears.)
All the parks are worth seeing, and this book gives a good introduction to them. Among the favorites that I have been to and particularly recommend are Denali National Park, an easy drive from Anchorage, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the island of Hawaii (the "Big Island"), Zion National park in Utah, home of some of the most spectacular desert landscape in the world, and Badlands National Park in South Dakota, featuring not only spectacular landscapes, but amazing animals in abundance.
This book is a great place to start; now get going and enjoy the beautiful National Parks!
