Book Description
In arid lands, where vegetation is sparse or absent, the open ground is not bare but generally covered by a community of small, highly specialized organisms. Cyanobacteria, algae, microfungi, lichens, and bryophytes aggregate soil particles to form a coherent skin - the biological soil crust. It stabilizes and protects the soil surface from erosion by wind and water, influences water runoff and infiltration, and contributes nitrogen and carbon to desert soils. Soil surface disturbance, such as heavy livestock grazing, human trampling or off-road vehicles, breaks up the fragile soil crust, thus compromising its stability, structure, and productivity. This book is the first synthesis of the biology of soil crusts and their importance as an ecosystem component. Composition and functioning of different soil-crust types are discussed, and case studies are used to show the impact of crusts on landscape hydrology, soil stability, nutrient cycles, and land management.

High Recommendation.......2007-03-03
After being frustrated of where to find helpful data about microbial crusts I asked a Army Corp of Engineer professional with a long documented research history of microbial crusts. He recommended this book and basically anything that Belnap is involved in. I find it containing a plethora of information that encourages me in my studies. There are case studies of microbial crusts from around the world in it, as well as a foundational information pertaining to the structure and purpose of these micro communities. I am eager to reference this in my thesis.
The "Wholly" Book of BSCs.......2005-05-03
Compiled and written by various experts from many different academic fields, this book represents our sum-total knowledge of biological soil crusts (BSCs) to date (at least, as of 2003). It is logically-arranged into different sections and chapters, each written by an expert in that area. It is fully referenced throughout, and includes bibliographies at the end of each chapter.
The book is a valuable research tool for exploring nearly any topic related to BSCs--from the microbial structure to their biogeography. It also discusses areas of further research needed, and how much we still lack in knowledge about this wonderful ecosystem.
If you have ever wanted to know the intricacies associated with BSCs, or are simply a curious scientist (or generally curious person, I suppose), this is a superb introduction and overview of a quite complex ecosystem. It is an invaluable research resource.
BSCs are found all over the world, and it is a shame that more people aren't aware of them, their accompanying benefits, and the need to preserve them.

Book Description
This book offers a unique review of how astronomical information handling (in the broad sense) evolved in the course of the 20th century, and especially during its second half.
This volume is a natural complement to the book
Information Handling in Astronomy published in the same series. The scope of these two volumes includes not only dealing with professional astronomical data from the collecting instruments (ground-based and space-borne) to the users / researchers, but also publishing, education and public outreach.
In short, the information flow in astronomy is thus illustrated from sources (cosmic objects) to end (mankind's knowledge).
This book will be very useful for researchers, teachers, editors, publishers, librarians, computer scientists, sociologists of science, research planners and strategists, project managers, public-relations officers, plus those in charge of astronomy-related organizations, as well as by students aiming at a career in astronomy or related space science.

Book Description
For as long as I can remember, It's just been Daddy and me. I can't remember my mother. I was told she died in an accident when I was four, and that's all I know about her. I don't understand why there isn't even a picture of her. The other thing I don't understand is why we're always moving -- different towns -- with no explanations. I know something is wrong. It begins with my birth certificate-- my only link to my mother. Then I overhear a conversation: "Tell terri the truth ," Why are we moving all the time? Are we running away from something or someone? What kind of secret is Daddy hiding...and why can't he share it with me.
Customer Reviews:
Strange and moving young adult book........2007-04-15
I had remembered this book from when I was younger and when I saw a copy for sale second-hand, I was curious to see how it held up over time. I only had a vague memory of the plot, just a sense that it had disturbed me when I read it.
Taking Terri Mueller is a book that deals with the very adult issue of custodial kidnapping. Terri finds that her life is strange compared to other children-- constantly moving, no real family. As she gets older, she is less inclined to accept the differences, and starts pushing her father to find out the real story of what had happened to her all those years ago...
Even as an adult, I found it a disturbing book. Mazer does a good job of capturing Terri's mixed loyalties and the difficult intricacies of her situation. My only real concern is the book's refusal to judge the actions of Terri's father. It almost seemed as though Mazer was encouraging us to tacitly accept that he had a fair point of view and that his rightness had not been completely eroded by his actions. I find that very difficult to accept. I realize, however, that her audience is young people who might find themselves in a similar situation and that her purpose is to reach them without judgement.
Recommended.
A gripping read, full of very real horror..........2006-12-12
Throughout most of her life, Terri Mueller has lived alone with her father Phil, constantly moving, constantly readjusting to a new life in some other state. She never thought much of her father's restlessness, just counted herself lucky to have such a doting dad.
But by the time Terri becomes a teenager, she begins to find their vagabond life a little odd. Why can't they stay put like everyone else? And why don't they have an extended family, like her friend Shaundra? Terri does have an aunt, her father's sister Vivian; but Vivian only comes to visit once a year, and in the meantime, Terri can't write or call her...
One day, going to fetch Vivian's cigarettes from her purse, Terri spots a photograph of her aunt with two boys. Who are they? Why haven't Vivian or Phil ever mentioned them?
All her life, Terri's been told her mother Kathryn was killed in a car accident when she was only four years old. So why are both her father and aunt so evasive about her mother? Why aren't there any photographs?
Despite knowing that the truth could be more harmful than anything she's ever known, Terri begins to realize that a life of lies is just as horrible. Slowly, but insistently, she begins to demand the truth...who is she?
Although this book was written over 25 years old, it is in no way dated. Sadly, Terri's story could have happened to anyone, and still often does...
An Exciting and Intriguing Read.......2004-06-04
This book was a terrific read with many suspenseful moments within. It's about a young girl (Terri) who has always lived with her father and thinks her mother is not alive. However, they are always moving from one place to another. This makes Terri very suspicious about who her father really is. She believes that her father kidnapped her from her mother and is just not telling her where she is. Norma Fox Mazer writes the story well enough so that readers will actually be able to put themselves in Terri's place, especially with all of the decisions she has to make along the way. This book is definitely a book I would recommend to young adults. This is because the author really puts into perspective what it would be like to move all of the time and believe your father might have done something in the past that has affected you, is affecting you, and will affect you. This is overall an exciting and intriguing read that is great for a wide variety of people.
taking teri muller.......2003-03-18
Taking teri nuller was a really good book.At first it was boring but then it got intresting int middle and the end.
This book was about a girl and her dad. They always moved around. Her dad told her that her mother was dead and she died in a car accident. When actually he took her from her mom because she was going to move to Italy and he thought that he would never see her again. When she first found out she was mad at him and wouldn't talk to him for a while. Then she went to live with her mom for Christmas and she wasn't going to go back with him but she decided to because she loved him and missed him.
Excellent book.......2003-01-21
Taking Terri Mueller has been the best mystery book I have ever read. I enjoyed it greatly, especially because I could not imagine if that happened to me, I don't know if I would have reacted the same way she did. The only person in her life that she loved and trusted ( her father) had kidnapped her and lied to her about her mother still being alive. It has a great twist to it and I find that is what makes this book appealing to teenager readers like myself. There are not many mystery book that I think teenagers enjoy, but I think they would this one.

Customer Reviews:
Book Amazon was unable to send me........2007-02-14
I would love to be able to review this book, having just read Suzy's "C'est La Vie". However after a long conversation with a non English as a first language speaker, it was decided if I wanted the rest of my order I would have to forgo Born to Shop NY. Others, let me know if you were able to purchase this book and if it was helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Suzy comes through.......2006-10-15
The last edition of Born to Shop disappointed me becasue Suzy Gershman's interest seemed so narrow that the stores and places she liked were too far out of my range. In this edition she's made some changes. Cheap shopping is listed and the luxe, nowhere else except NYC stores are listed as well. She must have gotten some younger helpers because much to my delight the Sean Jean store and and Triple Five Soul shop are mentioned too. One thing I've always liked about the Born to Shop series is that the advice shows you how to get around town safely, how to buy quality and how to have a good time with as few hassles as possible. And don't think this book is just for women. In our last trip to NY my husband frequently consulted it and was very pleased with the directions and commentary.
This book and Gerry Frank's guide are all you really need to take a weekend NYC trip.
A good comprehensive book - with reservations.......2006-07-05
There is a problem with travel books in that they try to cover EVERYthing in a city. I like books that just tell me the best places to go for what I want.
This book leans towards being a total reference, but offers the shopper plenty of options.
The bargain shopper needs to know one thing - Century 21 next to the world trade center site. That is about where the unbelievable bargains end. Now you can save some money on the book and spend it on shopping
One nicety about the book is that the author includes place to eat around the shopping.

Customer Reviews:
Ho Hom shopping experience.......2002-07-16
This book was a disappointment. Gershman mainly suggests the stores that fit her style which is, in her words, non-trendy and older. She omits many of the one-of-a-kind boutiques that make New York a truly unique shopping experience...a time to savor and discover the new styles that one only reads about in magazines and sees on the E! channel. Instead, she leads shoppers to chain stores and common mall fixtures, which would be ok...I do want to know where the Gap is located. But, she mentions the same stores over and over...pointing out each location all over the city. If purchasing a shopping guide, consider Fodor's CityGuide New York. It contained every single bit of information as Born to Shop plus much more.
Does the job.......2002-04-22
This pithy, unrelentingly cheerful guide book is quite useful. Even if you aren't a power shopper the book gives you a clear picture of NYC and what's fun to do there. It gave me the most up to date answers about taxis fare, the subway and how much a limo from the airport will cost(don't bother). As for Suzy's reccomendations. Well, her taste may be different than yours. As far as she is concerned there are only certain places in NYC worth shopping in so if you are curious as to the best place to have lunch in Harlem this aint the book for you.
I haven't been to NYC since I was a kid and had forgotten everything I knew about getting around. Suzy's book was a big help.

Book Description
A defining feature of Japan's emergence as a global economic superpower has been Japanese firms' establishment of thousands of affiliate operations in North America, Europe, and Asia. Despite the tremendous importance of this development, there have been surprisingly few articles published on the management of Japanese operations abroad, and even fewer attempts to collect and make sense of this scholarship. Schon Beechler and Allan Bird remedy this situation with Japanese Multinationals Abroad: Individual and Organizational Learning, a unique collection of essays from an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars. The book opens with an introduction by the editors, followed by a chapter analyzing the evolution of research on multinational enterprises in general and on Japanese multinational corporations in particular. The remainder of the book is divided into three sections. In the first section the contributors address the impact of Japanese management practices on individuals and groups, analyzing the interactions between Japanese expatriates and local employees that lead to negotiated "third cultures." The second section shifts to the business unit level, examining the ways in which Japanese firms attempt to transfer or substantially modify home country management philosophies, policies, and practices to fit the local affiliate. The final section, focused on the corporate level, deals with the impact of subsidiary management activities on the organization as a whole. The contributors address various aspects of organizational learning related to the transfer of managerial knowledge from subsidiary to parent or from one overseas affiliate to another. Japanese Multinationals Abroad: Individual and Organizational Learning addresses a set of issues that are critical for both international business researchers and practicing managers. It not only provides an integrated picture of how Japanese employees and organizations learn to adapt and prosper, it presents an clear lessons for all multinational corporations, regardless of their national origins.

Customer Reviews:
Sunshine Does Make the Seasons.......2007-10-04
I'm a student studying to become a teacher and I used this book to build a lesson plan. I think the concept of how seasons changes is presented in a manner for 2nd or 3rd grader to easily understand. The hands-on demonstration included in the book was also helpful is enforcing the concept of why there are 4 seasons. The additional resource information provided at the back of the book is also a helpful tool for use with modifying your lesson plan to meet various student learning levels. I will keep this book in my library for use when I do become a teacher.
Wonderful!.......2006-11-11
You won't be disappointed with any of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science books. As a primary grade teacher, I am extremely satisfied with this product. The text is easy to read, illustrations are always colorful and relate to the text, and diagrams provide additional information and explanation when needed. I constantly use these books to teach science concepts to my little ones.
Explains why we have seasons.......2001-08-10
if you have an energetic child like my 5 year old who is always asking why - this is a great book. I got this book around summer soltice when my sun did not understand why he is going to bed when it is so bright outside. By doing the "experiment" with an orange and a flashlight, I think he understands why we have seasons.
