Another suspenseful erotic thriller by that outstanding author of mysteries, Sebastien Japrisot. This is the third of his books for me, I've read his masterpiece Very Long Engagement and also Women in Evidence, all great mystery/detective stories, all totally different and suspenseful, Mr. Japrisot is an expert at plot twists and keeping the reader surprised.

The central event from the past in One Deadly Summer was a young woman terrorized and raped by three men. Years later the psychotic daughter conceived during the rape becomes obsessed with taking revenge, but is she taking revenge on the right ones or creating more innocent victims? The story is related to us by several different narrators, all with a different take on what it is happening, ultimately after a tragic ending the reader is left to decide who the true victim is. Hard book to put down and unforgettable.

Dark Side of Provence.......2002-12-29

Get this book if you can find it! A real twister of a plot, an atrocity committed 20 years before, a member of the next generation planning total revenge...every time you think you know what's going to happen, you're taken down another road. A plot skilfully woven with everything gradually revealed, up to a gut punch of a horrifying ending. The ramifications of this story are still occurring to me the next day. It's one of the few books I will keep to reread. The setting of the scene is also wonderful--if your idea of Provence is Peter Mayle's Hotel Pastis or Chasing Cezanne, try a taste of Japrisot for different point of view. If you like contemporary French authors, dont miss it.

Marvelous read.......2001-02-15

This has instantly become one of my favorite reads. I love to happen upon authors who are new to me. This is the first book of Japrisot's that I've read. I was expecting a murder mystery, and ended up with a classic tragic love story and a heart-wrenching ending. Japrisot demonstrates superior story-telling skills in his revelation of the main characters thoughts and intentions as they speak and act. The dialogue is so well presented even the occasional humorous comment is so natural in its presentation and well-timed that you only realize later that of course even a mentally tortured person has the capacity for comic insight.

While one cannot deny the absolute superiority of A Very Long Engagement, I found One Deadly Summer to be the most enjoyable among the rest of Japrisot's oeuvre. This is one instance where his powers come through with a distinctive flair, upon the themes that echo through all of his work: droplets of truth gathering through a confusion of voices, the sheer blindness of love, the eternal mystery that is woman, the infinite sadness of human error, and the surprises and tragedies that is life itself. How much of the world, and others, do we really "understand"?

EXCELLENT TALE OF REVENGE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES.......2000-03-09

The author did an excellent job of weaving the story together, one piece at a time while never losing momentum. Although the main character's desire for revenge stems from events of the past, the reader is never bombarded with backstory and is instead shown backstory through character thoughts when it is necessary and pertinent to the story. Although I cannot say that any of the characters are likable, there are believable and the author does keep us aware of their thoughts and intentions, therefore continuously holding our interest. The ending is surprising, dramatic and certainly well worth the wait.

About halfway through this book I just skipped to the last couple of pages. I couldn't keep any of the characters straight and didn't really care about any of them. There were needlessly detailed descriptions of things that had nothing at all to do with the plot. I will pass on this author in the future.

Beth Hartly's second venture into sleuthing.......2001-11-09

Beth is very busy in her legal research business. Her neighbor Phillip Barry is murdered in his office. His son, Peter, who shovels snow for Beth in the winter, asks Beth to help solve the crime. Of course, Beth can't say no.

This is an entertaining mystery. There is nothing special about it, but the characters and the mystery were interesting and it was a quick read.

Disappointing Tedium.......2001-10-23

This was a hard book to stay with. The author bogs the slender story down with detailed descriptions of who wore what and who ate what along with her tea. There's a potentially interesting plot hidden there somewhere, but it's so overladen with unessential verbiage that some may give up before finding it. I'll probably pass on searching for others by this author.

After reading "Milwaukee Winters Can Be Murder"--I couldn't wait to return to the East Side of Milwaukee and Beth Hartley's next escapade. Beth Hartley is 43, divorced, and working out of her historical home doing legal research. Somehow she keeps getting involved in solving murders however, much to her boyfriends dislike. Her partners in business also think she is nuts, but how could she turn down her 16 year old neighbor boy when he asked for her help in finding out who killed his father? This is a very likeable and strong character, one who makes a point of having Sunday dinner with an elderly woman she met on her first "case" and she even brings the dinner! I look forward to more seasons in Milwaukee! Anyone who likes the Kinsey Milhone detective series will most likely enjoy these books.

Character Flaw.......2000-10-03

The story is well written and exciting to read. I was able to relate to John Hartman's experiences, being familiar with the city of Gallup. I was drawn into the book and I found myself wanting to know what happens next. However, the Navajo characters are very stereotypical. The people of the Navajo Reservation are not as ignorant of Westernized medicine and the general American lifestyle outside the Reservation, as the book led us to believe. I also had the sense that most of the Navajo characters were cold and uncaring. This characterization is very unfortunate, especially since the book was published relatively recently.

A well-constructed thriller and a great read........1998-07-22

"Deadly Indian Summer" is a well-crafted novel that combines the author's knowledge of the American Southwest, Indian culture, medicine and the ways of Washington DC. This is a compelling story that only gets better as you read on. The characters are vivid - particularly the main character - a doctor who is haunted by his past and struggles to combine his skills with ancient Indian ways. Schonberg shows great respect for Native American culture and beliefs. He also has the necessary ingredients for a thoroughly modern thriller.

A Complete Work on Consumer Psychology.......2000-01-09

I read this book, during my first course in business.

After reading the book my thoughts on consumer psychology were better furnished; I was able to write a paper for my course evaluation that got me 99.25% and top rank.

The textbook is a strong reference that will be valuable to anyone working in Marketing. People, however, tend to find this science in particular more difficult than the other marketing sciences. The book, however, makes Consumer Behavior easy to understand.

Another related book although too simplistic in comparisson is Why We Buy by Paco Underhill.

Great insight of the marketplace and excellent examples.......1999-04-22

I am taking a college course titled after this textbook. It is very informative and gives helpful real life examples of how the principles are used in marketing today. My only problem with it is the information required to answer the questions at the end of the chapter is often not included in the chapter. My exams are given from those questions and many times I can't find the answers in the book. That can also be good because it makes me think for myself, but I wish I knew for sure if my exam answers are correct.

Understanding Kamenets.......2007-02-18

My great great grandparents lived in Kamenets. Their children spread thruout that region before they and their children left for America, Israel, Moscow, and South Africa. This book's explanation of the 19th Century social and economic order of this town and its environs finally allows me to understand, interpret and to place into perspective the stories my grandfather told especially in regard to Jews, the Polish overlords, Belarussian serfs and Russian rulers. Anyone interested in Jewish "family history" of that area of Grodno will greatly appreciate this book.

A great book .......2006-10-10

My next-door neighbor raved about this book when he read the Hebrew translation. It was more recently translated into English and I received a copy as a birthday gift. There is a very long introduction that I suggest that readers read only after reading the actual memoir first. The intro then becomes much more meaningful.

The book was written in 1913 and describes what life was like in Kamenetz - the shtetel that he grew up in. It was a typical Eastern European shtetel and the period the book covers is the 1850's and 1860's. It is amazing how the author so clearly captures the spirit of that period. He wrote the memoir as a series of little vignettes - each one describing a different aspect of life in his village. Some of the stories are comical and some are sad. Relations with the non-Jewish population is discussed as well as the relations with the representatives of the Tsar.

My grandparents came from Eastern Europe and after reading this book I felt that I was given a rare treat - a glimpse into my own past.

BOLDLY GONE BEFORE.......2004-08-07

Okay, so I Google myself. That's how I discovered this astonishing memoir, published (1913) in Warsaw in Yiddish, by a man who may or may not be my blood. I read the Hebrew translation in 2001 and corresponded a bit with Editor/Translator Dr. Assaf, a professor of Jewish History at Tel Aviv University. Assaf is a thorough and inspired scholar. The Hebrew edition was superb, and the English edition is, too.

Yekhezkel Kotik was born into one world and lived long enough to die in another, one in which nearly all physical remants of the old were vanished. An essentially medieval culture, on the periphery of the Russian Empire, unchanged for nearly a milleniuum, was in the course of Yekhezkel's adulthood swept away by the ripples of modernity which swept through the Russian Empire.Kotik was born in a small town in the Belarus -Lithuanian region of the Pale of Settlement, at a time when most men expected to spend their entire lives within a few kilometers of the spot where they came into the world. The 19th Century, however, did not end as it had begun. The emergence of industry, global commerce and the fundamental transformations of political economy which devolved from and fueled these tectonic shifts set people in motion to an unprecedented degree.
Kotik's adult life was strikingly modern. He resettled himself several times in different towns in Belarus and the Ukraine, operating ( with generally disappointing results) a series of businesses. He came to rest in cosmopolitan Warsaw, where he opened what turned into a thriving coffee house much favored by the city's Jewish intellectuals, artists, activists, bon pensants and bon vivants. Yekhezkel flourished in this milieu, and became locally famous as an organizer and promoter of all manner of cooperative societies.

Late in his life, Yekhezkel's socialist son Avraham urged him to write a memoir. It had become clear by this time, the early 20th Century, that the millenium of shtetl life in the Pale of Settlement would otherwise leave few traces of its existence. Yekhezkel, who had never before written anything but pamphlets and corporate by-laws, applied himself to the project and produced the first volume of a planned three. The book was made available to the leading Yiddish writer of the time, Sholom Aleichem, who declared it superior to anything he himself had written. Kotik's subsequent efforts were somewhat less well received, but now I'm giving away too much !

For me, Yekhezkel Kotik is an inventor, possibly the greatest of all time. He invented a time machine.

The research examines four periods: the populist administrations of Echeverria and Lopez Portillo, during which the foundations of modern financial markets were paradoxically laid; the debt-crisis years of de la Madrid, who reversed his party's political strategy by favoring the business class with financial opportunities; the economic transformation undertaken by Carlos Salinas, who mixed genuine reform with destabilizing anti-market measures; and the political watershed of the Zedillo administration, whose unpopular bank rescue gave opposition parties unprecedented power within Mexico's policy making process. Kessler also provides a comparison of financial collapse in two other emerging markets, South Korea and Russia, and examines the political roots of crisis in both countries. What makes financial liberalization tough?.......2000-10-22

This book offers a timely and compelling explanation that will allow the reader to understand why Mexico, a country that became the darling of the international financial community after following orthodox liberalization policies, ended up in 1995 with the most dramatic recession in its modern history and cuased the Tequila Effect, which threatened the stability of the world's financial system.

The author shows how political considerations played a key role in the direction of the liberalization process of Mexico's financial system. The author argues that liberalization led to inconsistent and unsustainable patterns of financial policy, which contributed to Mexico's 1995 deep recession and the consequent bank bailout. The author argues that although market reform has been promoted in developing countries to improve economic efficiency and stimulate growth, in Mexico financial liberalization provided rent-seeking opportunities for privileged groups and increased the states' ability to finance politically inspired obligations.

A Remarkable Guidebook.......2003-02-20

The Animal-Speak is a remarkable guidebook. Even if some readers do not feel altogether comfortable with the idea of telepathy with animals (much less humans), The knowledge about animals author Ted Andrews shares nonetheless is invaluable. Andrews has written more than two dozen books (including ANIMAL-SPEAK and ANIMAL-WISE). Andrews says wild animals have much to teach us and that through our bonds with pets or domesticated animals, we can become more aware or and tie into the intelligence that binds all nature. Animals can help us become more human and less mechanistic.

Each of the book's 10 chapters explores different aspects of the relationships of human to animal and animal to animal. If you are a skeptic about the depth of communication possible with the animal kingdom, personal stories such as Andrews' encounter with a barracuda show there are eminently practical aspects of such interactions. The chapter on animal communication and telepathy offers common-sense insights, and Andrews' also covers shamanic quests, spirit masks, shapeshifting and medicine shields.

Andrews does not try to be cute in his exploration of human-animal relations. While the book is not rich in children's stories that are understandable by the very young, there is no doubt that even preteens can benefit enormously from key chapters, such as "The Power of Domestic Animals", because most children have direct experience with pets at home or with animals on a farm. Andrews' rich insights and deep respect for the natures of our animal friends will serve members of that young audience well as they grow up to become Earth stewards. The book includes an excellent reference-guide appendix to the meanings of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and sea creatures to assist readers in utilizing the wisdom the text contains.
