Although named for America's top military hero of the day, Winfield Scott, Hancock was not originally intended for a military career; nevertheless he was destined to become one of the best corps commanders in the Union army. An 1844 graduate of West Point, he served in the infantry during the Mexican War with distinction before transferring to the quartermaster's department.

During the Civil War, at the battle of Antietam, Israel Richardson was killed and Hancock was sent to command his division in the Second Corps, thus beginning a historic association. At Fredericksburg his division took part in the costly assaults on Marye's Heights and at Chancellorsville he skillfully covered the Union withdrawal. Hancock stepped up to the Second Corps leadership. With the fall of John Reynolds early on the first day at Gettysburg, Mead dispatched Hancock to take over that wing of the army and decide whether the battle should be fought there or not. This was a high honor since Oliver O. Howard, a senior officer, was already on the field.

On the second and third days of the battle, Hancock directed the Union center until wounded by a nail and by wood fragments, possibly from his saddle, were driven into his thigh by enemy fire. After a long recovery, he returned in time for the Overland Campaign. He fought well at the Wilderness and was brevetted Major General for crashing through the Confederate salient at Spotsylvania. At Cold Harbor his troops were slaughtered in a futile assault ordered by Grant.

Following the Confederacy's collapse he came into conflict with Grant who objected to his lenient treatment of the South. He was mustered out of the volunteer service on July 26, 1866, the same day that he received the appointment of Major General. Remaining in the army, he held various departmental commands and was a potential Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1868. Hancock died on February 9, 1886, at Governors Island still on active duty. This is a digital reprint of the C.L. Webster shoulder board edition, "As Published in 1887".

Entertaining and Informative.......2001-09-08

I was truly excited to find this book. Almira Hancock (wife of Gen. Hancock) wrote this book soon after the death of her husband at the request of many friends and admirers. She gives a wonderful account of her life with one of America's greatest soldiers as well as a valuable point of view of America in that time period. It is not the most complete biography ever written on Hancock though, the chapters on the Civil War and specific battles (Gettysburg for example) lack detail and attention. She actually spent more of her time concentrating on his post-war activities (Indian War, and Presidential election) as well as his pre Civil War service (other than the Mexican War, which is not even given). Information on the Mexican war or the General's formitive years are not given, because Mrs. Hancock begins the book at their marriage. Which is understandable concidering that shes wrote mostly on events at which she was present. One of the things I enjoyed the most was the letters. Mrs. Hancock added many correspondence letters, ones that the General wrote to her, those written to and from Gen. Sherman, etc. and at the back of the book, many letters that Mrs. Hancock received just after the death of Gen. Hancock, from USA Gen. Sherman, USA Gen. Sheridan, CSA Gen. Gordon, etc. Most of the information given is not available in any other source, Mrs. Hancock burned any records or letters that she did not include in this account. After reading many books on Hancock, I'd have to say that this has the most reference to his character and personality, if not through Almira's descriptions, by his own dialog. This is an enjoyable and informative first hand account of America in it's formative adolescence.

Excellent story, poor execution.......2004-05-22

999 Officer Down transports the reader behind the scenes into the life of Phoenix cop Russ Reiker. Written by his wife, Catherine Marfino-Reiker, the narrative is heartfelt and poignant, describing great triumphs and losses in this man's life.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Reiker is not skilled in the craft of writing. She gets her story across, but without the help of a good editor. I frequently stumbled over mid-sentence tense or point-of-view changes. I was also left feeling unsatisfied at the end because she provided few details about the cause of Russ's accident.

For the story, this is great book. If you also read to enjoy creative language and vividly painted images, you're likely to be sorely disappointed.

Thought Provoking, Makes you think.......2001-03-27

I found this book to be very interesting, as it was my first experience reading of an Officers life. I found it intriguing the way the chain of command is initiated and followed through. There are rules and codes of procedures when even talking to your superiors. I thought that in itself had to be stressful for the officer, always having to know what to say and how you have to say it to your superiors, as not to ruffle any feathers. I find the officers are a close knit group, they look after their own, no matter what.I would recommend this book to all people in the field of law enforcement, their families and friends.

Eye opening,Riveting, Heart Wrenching,Truly a Must Read,.......2001-03-26

Never have I read a story which truly focuses in on the emotions and reality that an officer of the law must endure while in the line of duty. The corruption and crime on the streets never embraced me until I read this book. One can not imagine what it must feel like to be humiliated, harassed , and even hurt, while your main objective is to uphold the law and protect the people we live with. Think about the oath they take, the intense training, the Risk???? Always having to look over their shoulders. They all have families and lives just like you and I and yet their main objective is to protect the people, uphold the law no matter what it takes. Officer Reiker was a devoted Officer of the Law, a true inspiration to mankind, a leader. He not only enforced law and order, he took the time to educate children who were not as priviledged as some. Never did predujice play a part. In Officer Reikers career, he endured more than any average human could, and survived by only a miracle. Officer Reiker can be proud ,he can hold his head up high knowing in his heart that he always did the right thing, no matter what the risk. . Yes I highly reccomend this book to the people we live with, the people we talk to every day. Take a Walk in Officer Reikers shoes and see what it feels like. Hats Off to Officer Reiker........

One of a kind!.......2001-03-26

I found this book to be the most compelling "Cop" story read to date. The book delved behind the scenes issues of life - and all that goes with it. I felt his story was at first hard to read due to emotional understanding of just how real it all became to me. My first thoughts were that we don't pay our law enforcement enough for what they must sacrifice for the rest of us. My second thought was how did he emotionally get through his tour of duty - I know that I could never had done it. Great book and a must read!
