Book Description
The Family Business Compensation Handbook, published by Family Business Magazine, offers perceptive and practical advice on rewarding and motivating family and non-family employees in family-owned companies.
Written expressly for company owners, managers and advisers, the Handbook fills a critical information gap. Traditional compensation resources don't address issues that commonly arise in family firms, where questions about proper pay structures are intertwined with concerns about inadvertently fostering family rivalries or the desire to distribute wealth to loved ones.
The Handbook provides easy-to-follow expert advice from 50 leading family business consultants, compensation specialists, attorneys, financial planners and company owners themselves on managing the intricacies of a family firm's compensation. The book also includes real-life stories of family firms that have grappled with often-confronted compensation issues. It covers such topics as:
* What to do when compensation divides siblings * Devising phantom stock plans for key non-family executives * How to take special family circumstances into account * Adjusting pay practices after the founder has stepped aside * Why non-qualified deferred compensation plans are especially effective * Retructuring a pay system from equal to fair * Uses and abuses of perquisites * Compensating family company board members
Designed for frequent reference, The Family Business Compensation Handbook will help readers understand -- and successfully resolve -- the quandaries faced when designing and implementing family company compensation.

Book Description
This book presents a new law of human behavior founded by the author some twenty-five years ago, but not proclaimed as a law until now. The Law of Escalating Marginal Sacrifice (LEMS) states that when a person exerts more effort pursuing a job, task, or goal, the negative outcomes, or costs experienced by the person as a result of the higher effort exerted, rise at an increasing rate the rate of increase accelerating rapidly as one's effort capacity is approached. Such a relationship, between effort exerted and perceived costs associated with that effort, has profound implications for managing people in the workforce. This relationship provides a vital framework for integrating the theory of the firm with the theory of individual behavior a synthesis too long neglected.

Book Description
Doctor Van Orden has worked in several areas of both clinical medicine and basic medical science. He considers himself a psychotherapist and a "wounded healer", having had to struggle with his own demons in order to become able to help others. Through his formative years he became disillusioned about the ways that doctors in training become emotionally hardened. He then found that psychiatric training largely failed to produce healers who were emotionally healthy themselves. As medicine became more commercialized he rebelled at the depersonalization of "services" provided to "medical customers."
Where Have All the Healers Gone? is about his own personal growth and his fascinating experiences with patients, many of whom had been badly or unethically treated. Finally, he shares his frustrating experiences with modern medicine as an impersonal corporate business.

Despite the book's title, and its gushing dedication to her daughter Susan Ruby, ("I think of you, and I thank God (and my own mother)"), former congresswoman Susan Molinari's Representative Mom has more to do with political than family leadership.
And how could it be otherwise? Molinari came only recently to motherhood, not long before quitting politics in 1997 to pursue a career as host of a morning TV news show. She's been a political player since the age of 27, when she became the youngest person ever elected to the New York City Council. It was only a few years later that she was elected to the U.S. Congress, following in the footsteps of her father, Guy Molinari.
The younger Molinari's politics are an interesting hybrid. A pro-choice, feminist, Staten Island-raised Republican in the George Bush mold, she often found herself breaking ranks with her party on issues such as child care and gun control. Not surprisingly, she believes in the art of compromise. "I've never been one to win my issues by threatening to impale myself on a sword." she says of her political style. "Some people consider that a deficiency. 'Oh, Susan Molinari plays the game,'they say. They sorely misunderstand the nature of the political process."
This is a straightforward memoir that will be of interest to readers who want a more detailed picture of the meteoric rise of one woman in the political arena, as well as the leading figures with whom she worked. --Maria Dolan
Book Description
The touching, funny, and human story of an ordinary working mother's adventures in extraordinary places: Susan Molinari, the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in the U.S. Congress, now host of "CBS News Saturday Morning".
She was the youngest person ever elected to the New York City Council. After her election to the U.S. Congress, she quickly rose to a leadership position, becoming the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in that body and one of the most popular politicians in the country.
Her appeal lay in her commitment and in her personality. USA Today praised her as "one of the most visible baby-boomer advocates for women's issues." Entertainment Weekly said Molinari has "a smile so wide that her eyes have to close to make room for it on her face." She was the keynote speaker at the 1996 Republican National Convention, an early and forceful advocate for intervention in Bosnia, and a dedicated fiscal conservative deeply concerned with the welfare of women and children.
Yet at the height of her power, the woman the New York Times called "one of the Republican Party's most promising politicians" decided to take on a completely new challenge--anchoring a new major morning news program.
The ups and downs of Susan Molinari's remarkable life form the heart of this warm, lively narrative. Bright, hardworking, and energetic, she took on challenges when no one thought she could succeed and painstakingly built a career, eventually rising to the summit of her profession. She also met Congressman Bill Paxon, the man of her dreams, married him, and started a family.
In Representative Mom, Susan Molinari relates the pressures, joys, and complications of being a powerful woman in a traditionally male-dominated environment, and discusses--with humor and grace--the difficulties of balancing family life with professional responsibilities. Her story mirrors the dilemmas and triumphs of a generation of American women.
Customer Reviews:
Ms. Molinari and her climb to the top.......1998-07-07
This book is an interesting look into how my former U.S. Representive spent her time. Susan talks about all the obstacles she had to overcome. But what other job in the world would allow its members to bring children to work and allow one to dress like a bag lady? It's too bad that Susan had to wait until she was re-elected to decide that her dream job would be a T.V. anchor. Representive Mom and her climb to the top was a real let down.
this book is very upbeat and amazingly non-partison.......1998-06-15
Representative mom is a look at the amazing life so far of one of americas former brightest political stars. Susan Molinari tells us her well wishers how and why she gave up a very promising career and future as an american politcian, and maybe even the first female president. She tells about growing up in politics, being the only Republican on the New York City council. Ms. Molinari lets the american people in on the magic that happens when you are a member of the House of Representatives.

Spider Jack Rules!.......2000-03-29
Spider Jack, by Calvin Chimene, is a fun and unusual read like his other great book, Hot Nights in Houston. It is a collection of unique and interesting stories full of wonderful characters and unusual situations. I especially like the chapter called Strange Inventions, with poems written in the styles of the masters. My husbands favorite is the Pulviolava.
A riveting romp through war!.......2000-03-29
Spider Jack is an amusing and sometimes disturbed look at World War II through the eyes of Spider Jack Yates. It is almost as if one took Catch 22, Mein Kampf, and "Its a Mad Mad World" and tossed them in the Cuisinart. With great cajones, Chimene has managed to show us war in another light, and made it humorous and interesting in a way Stephen Ambrose never could.

A must have for anyone who cares about animals!.......2006-06-23
Ms. Lopez has really done something special as she combines a love of animals with practical advice on how humans and animals can co-exist. She passes on to her readers the benefits of her amazing experience as a volunteer at a Texas wildlife refuge. Her special connection with this subject matter enables her readers to discover new and exciting ways to enjoy wildlife while still preventing thos unwanted problems that sometimes result when we get "too close" to nature. Thanks Andrea!
When Raccoons Fall Through Your Ceiling - A. Lopez.......2003-03-25
Andrea Dawn Lopez's book explains in easy-to-understand text why human/animal conflicts or situations occur, and what to do to remedy them. Anyone who's ever had an animal visitor in their home will find this book useful. As the title suggests, Andrea explains how to coexist with wildlife in a non-lethal manner. The author's affection for wildlife is evident in her warm, tender writing.
Good information.......2003-03-20
I Loved this book it's finaly nice to have writen material on how to deal and live with our wildlife. I live in the country and some people just dont understand that the animals were here first and it is our job to learn animal safty and respect and also safe ways to deal with the animals. Andrea covers all this in her book and I would like to prsonally Thank her.
Sincerly,
Julie Hanenberg
For the Love of Animals.......2003-01-01
How true this writing is. The animals are being forced out of their natural habitat to make room for humans.
I have no doubt that Andrea's experiences go well beyond what she has written about, even as a child. She has made it clear that co-existing is possible without much effort on our part.
BE PREPARED! Where have we all seen those words written before?
Although "common sense" is not all that "common", I think this book makes clear to all of us what we can do to make our lives and the lives of the animals a much safer place.
