                      Book Description

Skill Wars shows how to increase productivity and profits by making investments in human capital development. It addresses the disparity between the available jobs and available workers. By education and training only 20% of all American workers can fit well into our demanding high-tech workplace. How do we train the 80%?

Skill Wars defines the race between advanced technology investment and human resources investment and shows managers how to measure that investment. It introduces a Human Capital Scoreboard of seven new business management/measurement tools including a more accurate calculation of ROI (Return on Investment) for employee performance improvement programs. It also provides case studies of how quality training can deliver on more problem-solving/thinking skills. It has a foreword by Joseph Boyett, author of The Guru Guide and Workplace 2000.

Skill Wars is a "basic workplace performance primer" that presents complex issues in a simple language and format that will move both business leaders and the American public to give their popular support. There are few viable alternatives. Gordon believes that, "Only at great peril can Americans continue to largely ignore the workplace as an important arena that helps structure learning for life."

Addresses the 'hot' topic of increasing worker skill shortages in American business
Offers a Human Capital Scorecard of seven new business management/measurement tools
Very important ROI (return on investment) chapter

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Vital Book for Our Times.......2002-08-10

America-and the world-face a serious, probably debilitating shortage of skilled workers. Oh, there are plenty of people out there, most of whom want to work. However, if they don't have the skills that are in demand by employers, their work opportunities and career futures are limited. Employers will compete to attract and hold the people with the skills to get the job done. Savvy workers will compete to acquire and market skills that will be in demand and that will make them unique and marketable in the world of work. Many will do well. Other employers and workers will not fare so well, changing the face of employment.

This book addresses a wide range of topics, organized into three sections: Measuring Human Capital Development, Reports from the Firing Line: Improving Productivity and Performance, and Developing People. The content is not directed just toward educators or professionals in the field of training and development. It is more broad-based. As explained by the author in his introduction, "For the business person, "Skill Wars" is a policy book about managing and measuring workplace performance and profit. For the union leader and employee, "Skill Wars" is about employability and personal growth. For parents, "Skill Wars" is about their children's future careers and guaranteed participation in "the American Dream." For politicians and government leaders, "Skill Wars" is a blueprint for what new voters are beginning to demand in every state across America: new laws to create a more knowledgeable workforce. For educators and trainers, "Skill Wars" offers new ideas on how to better collaborate with all these groups and create innovative, diverse curricula, whether in a schoolroom or the corporate classroom."

Ninety figures illustrate the book, accompanying the text to illuminate the concepts delivered on page after page by Edward Gordon, PhD, a consultant specializing in human/intellectual capital for over two decades. His teaching experience at DePaul, Loyola, and Northwestern Universities complement his work as a consultant, writer, and speaker. Gordon certainly has the credibility and background to write this important book.

You will bob your head up and down in agreement as you read this book. You'll also shake your head in disbelief and amazement as you realize how far behind we are-how much remains to be done. Gordon cites the numbers, concentrating on the ROI: the Return on Investment in building skills and capacity. The research has been done on this book, as evidenced by the number of footnotes offering bibliographical references. The pages are packed with information.

The final chapter, Investing in Human Capital: A Blueprint for the 21st Century, is particularly powerful . . . and should be carefully considered by everyone in a position to help build the skill base that will be needed. And that's all of us. Gordon warns that "The gap between the so-called 'knowledge workers' and low skilled workers is widening at an alarming rate." Why is the gap growing? "Because too many businesses are engaged in an act of financial levitation, trying to make bigger and bigger stacks of money from companies that are barely growing. Their magic act centers on cost-cutting, squeezing staffs, slashing training, eliminating everything except their 'core business operations.' The predominant American management philosophy of the 1990s has been that business exists only to drive up stock prices and enrich shareholders."

As we've seen in recent months, this strategy has been damaging, to say the least. More sensitive employers are creating life-work balanced environments, demonstrating stewardship for the world around us, and taking other steps to correct and improve our corporate society. "Skill Wars" should stimulate more serious efforts to build workforce competencies or all the other efforts will be smoke-and-mirrors and façade.

More people need to read this book. Now.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody's In The Skill War!.......2000-04-04

This book is about a key topic--how do you get and keep the people you need to grow? It is a solid read for leaders whose companies must compete for the best people. The book is a primer on how to compete for talent--one of the toughest jobs a company has to face. It is an easy read--probably good for someone to take on their next plane trip. Highly recommend!

                            Book Description

This thoroughly revised and updated edition of one of the classics of kinetics text books continues the successful concept of the 1974 edition: In its first part, a simplified approach to the determination of rate laws and mechnisms is given steadily working up to complex situations. In the following chapters the principles developed there are extensively used in a comprehensive account of reactions of transition metal complexes, including reactions of biological signifacance.

The text is illustrated by numerous figures and tables. Points of further interest are highlighted in special insets. 140 problems, taken from the original literature, enable the student to apply and deepen his newly acquired knowledge and make the book highly useful for courses in inorganic and organometallic reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, a wealth of over 1700 references renders it an indispensable work for the active researcher.

                              Book Description

Today's managers and decision makers face an escalating challengge in understanding the dynamics of their organizations. A key element in this debate, which is currently the subject of a great deal of interest, is the nature of the linkage, or convergence, between (I) organizational change and transformation, (II) corporate planning and attempts to implement the planning at all levels in the process of transformation, and (III) the role of information technology and systems for decision support and communication in organizations. This book was conceived to address this challenge. It contains papers addressing, especially: frameworks for organisational transformation and decision support; cases and issues in decision support and organisational transformation; issues in corporate growth, upsizing, mergers and acquisitions; issues in downsizing, privatisation, outsourcing and personal innovation.

                                Book Description

On August 15, 1862, 36-year-old James Jasper Hartley enlisted in the Union army in Guernsey County, Ohio. While serving nearly two years with Union troops as they fought their way toward Richmond, 36-year-old James Jasper Hartley wrote 89 letters to his wife Melissa back on the family farm. The poignancy of the letters-unpublished until now-comes from the fact that Hartley was an alert observer and a compassionate man with a sense of humor. He worried about worn out boots as well as the bullets of rebel sharpshooters; he was concerned about the state of his crops back on the farm and whether wife Melissa could get a good price for their old horse Bill. The letters provide direct glimpses of Hartley's life as a Union soldier, from his induction into the army to his brutal death in the disastrous battle of Cold Harbor, eight miles short of Richmond. Hartley's epistolary accounts make war not the abstract contest of debatable causes but the day-by-grubby-day coping of ordinary men caught in national chaos that destroyed homes, towns, farms, cities, industries, families, and the men themselves.

                                  Book Description

When God leads man to a calling, who is man to resist the urging of the Lord? When Rufus Cleveland Lewter, Jr., was born, his family knew he was destined to become a physician and healer. Rufus knew his destiny and relished the thought of fulfilling the will of the Lord.

But when the time came to enter medical school, Rufus found that there were those who would stand in the way of the Lord's demands. An African-American who had served his country proudly in armed conflict, Rufus found that he was not welcome in American medical schools. His career voyage took him overseas, overcoming tremendous odds and familial strife Rufus went on to become the first African-American to be educated in Egypt as a physician.

But things were not to be easy for this man of mercy, as his move back to the United States was filled with more heartache and despair. How much would Lewter be able to take before he gave up on the Lord's requirements and took down his shingle? Would he be able to maintain the sanctity of his marriage when he was the only one who felt strong in the wedding vows? And what discrimination would Rufus be able to overcome to help those in need, both physically and spiritually?

To Freedom Born: The R.C. Lewter Story chronicles the life of this amazing man as he struggles to overcome obstacles and odds that surely would have broken other men. Lewter shares a strong determination and triumph of character that will inspire readers to new heights of resilience and awe.

                                  Book Description

Ozaki Yukio, who was returned to his seat in the Japanese Diet twenty-five times, served in that body from its inception in 1890 to 1953. He was several times a cabinet member and, for ten years, mayor of Tokyo. A strong advocate of representative government, he both witnessed and propelled Japan's transformation from a late feudal society to a modern state. His autobiography, available in English for the first time, gives an insider's account of key episodes and leaders over seven decades of Japanese history.

Ozaki's political life spanned the Meiji rise to power and Japan's defeat in World War II, and he played a significant role in each phase of that epic. As a young reporter, he gained preeminence with incisive calls for supremacy in East Asia. A European trip that showed him the devastation of World War I converted him to advocacy of arms reduction and international cooperation. He watched with dismay as Japan encountered isolation and military disaster. Known for the courage of his convictions, he became a marked man, carrying a death poem in his pocket. His sturdy independence survived the American Occupation, as he deplored his associates' readiness to heed occupation dictates.

Ozaki's story reverberates with the immediacy of his personal knowledge of every major Japanese political figure for three-quarters of a century. It is the account of a man who made history as well as writing it. His story is the story of modern Japan. Through it, readers will gain first-hand knowledge of Japanese constitutional history, one with rich relevance for contemporary Japanese politics.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Marvellously-told story of Japan's political development.......2003-01-06

Ozaki was a real original, a samurai fighting for political modernization and responsible government. Elected to the very first Diet in 1890, he served for more than 60 turbulent years. He knew everyone in Japanese public life and draws sharp portraits of them and their actions. The story is told clearly enough (with annotations where needed) and vividly enough to serve as an introduction to Japan's political history. The editing and translation, by Ozaki's grand-daughter, is excellent.

Elaine Breen's humorous and sometimes irreverent reflections on her life in a small coastal town in California, as a mother of eight children, and as a woman in her 70's who wears a lot of purple, will surprise and entertain readers. It is the author's particular world view--seeing normal day-to-day events with a twist, humor, and irony--that brings life into her writing. This book is a treat that will lighten your heart and remind you not to take life too seriously.

I could not put My Peaceful Forest by Elaine Breen down until I had read the entire book! Whether you're a resident of Pacific Grove, California, or not, Elaine's insight and humor will keep you turning the pages. My Peaceful Forest will make you smile, will tug at your heart a little but mainly is a simple tale of life and it's ups and downs from a Mother's, Grandmother's, and Wife's perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Elaine has done it again........2001-02-10

I loved "My Peaceful Forest"! Elaine has such a refreshing writing style. I just came in from shoveling a foot of snow, and I curled up to a warm fire, a cup of tea and got lost in this book. It's best to read it when you want to get away from it all after a tough day. 105 pages of delight. It makes you want to visit the village of Pacific Grove, have a piece of apple pie at Toasties or sitting on the park bench watching the seals and otters swimming near the beach (but not together). I share Elaine's love of cows and Snickers bars. I wonder if you sprinkle chocolate chips on a cow, will you get chocolate milk? (you have to read the book to understand that). Anyway, great job once again Elaine! May God be with you when you bring your '82 Volvo in for its 500,000 mile checkup....I can't wait for your next book.
