    Book Description

Overworked managers know that management is about doing the best you can with what you've got, in the real world of organizations that are demanding more and more, for less and less. This book is for every manager who knows that if doing that was as easy as most books and trainers make out, they'd be doing it already. The books you've read all seem to have been written by people who don't know what it's like in the real world of work, and mistake you for a superhero instead of a real manager. You know you could work out a better way of doing things, but the trouble with being an overworked manager is that you just can't seem to find the time.

But what if someone else had done it for you -- read all the management books, developed an approach that works and put it all in one practical accessible source? And what if that someone wasn't a management guru or consultant, but an overworked manager like you? Real Coaching blends the authors thinking framework with your experience, to help you be the best you can be. Overworked managers know that management is about doing the best you can with what you've got. This book blends the author's thinking framework with your individual experience to help you improve your coaching skills using feedback to influence and solve problems.

5 out of 5 stars It's great, 'it does what it says on the tin'........2003-05-10

There are many things that I like about this book, and it has proved such a good read I felt absolutely compelled to write a review about it.

Topics include: the need to become a good coach, why past attempts at coaching failed, how the beliefs of the coach have a part to play, the need to pay attention not only to skills but also the 'human element', optimal allocation of responsibility, making lasting improvement, increasing self-awareness, sharing an understanding of the issues, analysing and learning from previous experiences and why after all this it can still go wrong. The book covers a lot of material, but the friendly and chatty style with which it is presented makes it always a pleasure and never a chore.

This book does not patronise. It does not claim to provide a single right way of doing things, which 'if you do you will be fine' - life simply isn't like that and any book worth its salt (as this one is) will recognise that. In short it is 'coaching and feedback come to life' Too often, the books I have read are prescriptive instead of descriptive, offering solutions that would only work in a book, not in the real-life setting of a workplace.

The book is very easy to read. There is no 'jargon' as such, but the terms that are used are explained clearly. The writing style is free flowing and considered yet not stuffy nor over-elaborate. In keeping with this, there is also a brief summary at the end of each chapter, simply called 'In Short', which reviews the key points.

On the surface it's a quick read with everything you need to get started and improve your performance being brought to the front of your mind immediately. However, it is in delving in a little further that you appreciate not only the care that must have gone into this book to make it such a succinct read, but the ability of the author to connect her experiences to your own in such a way that the details begin to unravel themselves as you become more immersed in the book.

One highlight for me, was, very roughly paraphrasing, how we can change whatever we are unhappy with by examining the beliefs triggering this behaviour and analysing what had held us back in the first place. If we do this we make changes that are very easy to stick to. It enabled me to put right something I had been doing wrong. But, calling any part a highlight would merely suggest the book has failings or shortcomings in other areas, which simply isn't true. The fact that this book doesn't make any radical claims that it has all the answers if you follow the advice exactly is much of its appeal.

I have now read the first two books in this series, and if the others are as good as these, this collection could well become a 'Management Bible' for today's busy overworked manager. It was a pleasure to have read such a lively and inspiring text. I don't want to oversell it (which I don't believe I have) so the best thing to say would be to get hold of a copy yourself to see what I mean. Highly recommended, a must for all managers trying to perform under the pressures of the real world.

        Book Description

Armored scale insects are among the most damaging and least understood of the pests that prey on forest trees, fruit and nut crops, landscape ornamentals, and greenhouse plants. The passage of U.S. plant quarantine laws was prompted by devastation caused by an armored scale in the nineteenth century, and the appearance of new invasive species remains a vital concern at ports of entry and for arborists, farmers, nursery workers, foresters, and gardeners everywhere.

This book provides the most comprehensive available information on the identification, field appearance, life history, and economic importance of the 110 economically important armored scale insects that are found in the United States. The authors have devised the first field key to economic armored scales, which will be invaluable to those trying to identify the pests and prevent the introduction of new exotics. (Most of the species covered are not native to the United States but broadly distributed across the globe.) The extensive color plates and highly detailed line drawings surpass anything available in other volumes on armored scale insects, and have not previously been published.

Especially noteworthy are the data on distribution, host plants, and the kinds of damage caused by armored scales. The species descriptions include scientific names, synonyms, common names, field characteristics, microscopic characters, affinities, host plants, distribution by state, life history, economic damage, and selected references.

          Book Description

Wildlife-Habitat Relationships goes beyond introductory wildlife biology texts to provide wildlife professionals and students with an understanding of the importance of habitat relationships in studying and managing wildlife. The book offers a unique synthesis and critical evaluation of data, methods, and studies, along with specific guidance on how to conduct rigorous studies. Now in its third edition, Wildlife-Habitat Relationships combines basic field zoology and natural history, evolutionary biology, ecological theory, and quantitative tools in explaining ecological processes and their influence on wildlife and habitats. Also included is a glossary of terms that every wildlife professional should know. Michael L. Morrison is professor and Caesar Kleberg Chair in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University in College Station. Bruce G. Marcot is wildlife ecologist with the USDA Forest Service in Portland, Oregon. R. William Mannan is professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

I would probally regret buying this book, even if i do like animals. The book WILDLIFE-HABITAT RELATIONSHIPS:..... SEEMS KIND OF BORING.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of traditional concepts and techniques.......2000-06-16

Morrison et al.'s second edition of Wildlife-Habitat Relationships: Concepts and Applications is a welcome overview of the state of the art in the mid-1990s. The authors examine their subject from three complementary viewpoints: basic concepts, measurement and analysis, and management. Individual concepts are presented very clearly and the writing is first-rate. The authors provide a level of detail appropriate to an introductory overview.

While this text is suitable for an undergraduate course and provides an excellent basic reference, seasoned professionals may find it lacking. For example, more recent numerical techniques (such as resource selection functions) are beyond the book's scope. Nevertheless, "Wildlife-Habitat Relationships" is admirably up-to-date in many respects, including excellent discussions of experimental approaches and scale, and I've referred to it many times during the course of my own Ph.D. work.

I have some prejudice against this guide because of its high recommendation of a spectacularly horrible hotel in Corfu (room like a cell, property overrun with chain-smoking German package tourists). It has the usual Michelin virtues of good maps with star-rating prioritization of sites. Not as much information about smaller towns as Lonely Planet and not as many maps. A good but not a great guide.

                Book Description

Do tweens have economic power? At 20 million and growing, this group presents a serious opportunity for today's marketers, influencing as much as 20 percent of the $550 billion in household spending by the 8.7 million families in which they live. As part of Generation Y, tweens are the last offspring of the large and powerful baby boom generation and, like their parents, are a market force to be reckoned with.

No longer children and not quite teenagers, tweens-kids aged 8 to12 years-are one of the fastest growing market segments for corporate America. With significant influence on household and family purchases, the four key motivating drivers for tweens are fun, freedom, power, and belonging. The Great Tween Buying Machine will demystify the newly discovered tween market using research findings and by discussing product development techniques and the latest marketing strategies in packaging, advertising, and promotions.

The Great Tween Buying Machine reveals key information on how to expand a company's marketing base now, recognizing that an early investment in the tween market is an investment in a company's future.

                1 out of 5 stars A new low..........2006-03-31

Marketers and advertisers base the majority of their life on the creation of false needs. Siegel demonstrates why it is that this "tween" market has become so interesting for businesses: this particular age group is old enough to make suggestions to their parents about how to spend their money but still young enough to be utterly manipulated.

5 out of 5 stars Tween Marketing Experts.......2005-08-26

There are some books available that explore the Tween's social and ego needs, but there was nothing in print that went deeper - to identify the specific motivational platforms or "drivers" that explain why Tweens make the choices they make - until now. The Great Tween Buying Machine is the authoritative source for exploring what drives Tweens, and what the social and personal implications are for Tweens. As a V.P. of Marketing, I found the explanation of a Tween's "Hierarchy of Needs" exceptionally insightful. Essential information if you plan to expand your company's base. Highly recommended.

                5 out of 5 stars a real must-read.......2005-08-25

A friend highly recommended this book and I would do the same to you. You will gain valuable insights into the complex, evolving world of tweens and begin to understand the way they interpret the world around them. A real must have for the library of any marketer, designer or brand manager.

Trebitsch Lincoln was a proselytizer for two Christian denominations, a social researcher,an escaped convict, a winning candidate for Parliament, a German spy, a participant in the Kapp putsch of 1920, and a Buddhist monk.
You literally can't make this stuff up.
I read the book with disbelief, but the facts are there. It was a lot easier to forge new identities in the years before social security and national i.d. cards. Lincoln's travels took him all over the world and he seems to have conned people of all nations and political persuasions.
Mr. Wasserstein's book is beautifully written. I think it should be back in print.

                      Book Description

In the past twenty years, economic policy in Latin America has veered toward neoliberalism, or market friendliness. State interventions in the economy were cut back in many areas, in the form of reductions in fiscal deficits; privatization of public enterprises; reductions of import quotas and tariffs and export subsidies; removal of barriers to foreign capital flow; and increased faith in the private sector and market processes.
This book offers an intellectual and historical background for these policy choices, specifically in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The contributors detail the structural reform and economic policies in Latin America and discuss the various and often contradictory effects neoliberalism, such as fluctuating growth rates and saving-investment balances, worsened corruption, growth of exports, falling wages, and rising unemployment. In addition, each case study forecasts the effects of neoliberal policies on future growth and income distribution in the respective countries. Finally, it offers policy alternatives to neoliberalism.
The essays in this volume are: an introduction by Lance Taylor; "The Argentine Experience with Stabilization and Structural Reform," by José María Fanelli and Roberto Frenkel; "Opening, Stabilization, and Macroeconomic Sustainability in Brazil," by Edward Amadeo, "An Ongoing Structural Transformation: The Colombian Economy, 1986-96," by José Antonio Ocampo; "Economic Reforms, Stabilization Policies, and the 'Mexican Disease,'" by Nora Claudia Lustig and Jaime Ros; and "Structural Reforms and Macroeconomic Policy in Peru: 1990-96," by Oscar Dancourt.
Lance Taylor is the Arnhold Professor of International Cooperation and Development, New School for Social Research.

                      Book Description

Scientists estimate that, until 1900, the water level of the Chesapeake Bay rose at the rate of three feet every thousand years. Alarmingly enough, the bay rose by one foot in the twentieth century alone, and for evidence of this dramatic change one need only observe the effects of rising water on the islands of the Chesapeake Bay, which slowly are slipping from sight.

A retired oceanographer who first conducted research on the bay in the 1950s, William B. Cronin here supplies a survey of the changing fortunes of these forty-odd islands, from Garrett in the north to Gwynn and James islands to the south. Cronin's historical and scientific tour outlines their erosion, their loss of marshland, and the rich if changing human experience they have supported for generations. He draws on imagery that includes the work of celebrated local photographer A. Aubrey Bodine, colonial and state records, newspaper pieces, and his own personal and professional experience.

Historic nautical charts, compared to current data from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, leave no doubt of the crisis many of the islands face. On one, Holland, rising water in the late 1910s forced townspeople to move their houses by barge to the mainland. On another, Barren, a sizable hunting lodge housed guests as late as the 1970s but by 1985 had become a wreck beneath the water. An appendix documents the many small islands that have dropped entirely from view since the seventeenth century.

5 out of 5 stars A book to keep or a book to give.......2007-08-09

I was so delighted with this book, which was a purchase for my library's collection, that I bought another copy for myself! Living on the Chesapeake Bay myself, I am always on the hunt for great books for my personal library. When folks come for a visit, it's nice to have books for them to peruse. This book is a remarkable and timeless work of art as well as a wealth of knowledge! There are, sadly, too many places on the Bay that are gone forever, and many that are almost gone, due to time, tide and weather. This book gives the reader a wonderful history of each island, as well as magnificent photographs, and even GPS locations for each. If you're a Chesapeake Bay boater, you've gotta have this! If you know someone who is, or just someone who enjoys stories of our wonderful treasure of the Chesapeake, this makes a wonderful gift!
