The competence-based perspective on strategy and management emerged in the 1990s as a new approach to developing strategy and management theory and practice. In the past decade, the focus on organizational competences -- and the resources, capabilities, and processes that create competences -- has provided a highly productive "broad church" for theory development, research, and practice in both strategic and general management.

Authored by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working within the competence perspective, the papers in this volume contribute to developing a better theoretical and practical understanding of interfirm interactions that significantly affect an organization's competences. The papers present both theoretical developments and empirical research based on a variety of case studies and other research in diverse industrial and geographical contexts.

The papers in this volume develop three themes. Part I includes papers that address the key issues of managing activities in an organization's competence building and leveraging processes that span the boundaries of two organizations. The papers in Part II investigate the role of networks and strategic alliances in competence building and leveraging processes. Part III presents papers that investigate competitive interactions between firms in their competence leveraging activities.

I object! This is a great book on Cavalry Operations!.......2002-12-29

The previous reviewer missed the point. As an Executive Officer Mike Mahler was second in command, and often on-site commander of the unit. In this position he also had a lot of day-to-day contact with supporting and supported units. This is not a blood and guts account of fighting tanks, but one of how Armored Cavalry works. As a former Armored Cav Officer it was a great read and Colonel Mahler did a great job of explaining the complexities and challenge of Cavalry Operations. I wish I had had officers as good as he was commanding me.

As to not ID'ing the unit, that is his choice and I will not fault him for it. Maybe he just did not want to drag up the names of dead or incompetent officers. Who knows.

If I could I would love to talk with the Colonel one on one about his experiences. Great book for anyone interested in Armored Cavalry.

A Staff Weenie's Odd Account of Vietnam.......2001-01-02

COL Michael D. Mahler served as the personnel officer (S-1) of the 1st Brigade/1st Infantry Division from August-December 1967 and Executive Officer of 3-5th Cavalry/9th Infantry Division from December 1967 to August 1968. The weirdest thing about this memoir is that Mahler never identifies his own unit or any other, or any individuals; everything and everyone is referred to in generic terms. It is very odd to read an account where no names are mentioned. With all this secrecy, I'm surprised that Mahler didn't conceal that this was a Vietnam memoir and instead call it "Orangeland". Essentially, this is a collection of anecdotes, war stories and observations strung together. Some are interesting, some are not. This work is lacking in humanity, since there are no characters (just generic, faceless, company commanders, platoon leaders, etc.) and there are no great lessons here. It is also odd for a non-green tabber (i.e. a unit commander) to be writing a memoir; the actual trigger-pullers might have done a better job. There is not even any of the drama of supporting a combat unit; Mahler could have gotten much more into the specifics of armor logistics but instead he just glosses over it. Overly generalized to a fault. One suspects Mahler is some kind of weenie by the end. Of note, the squadron intelligence officer (S-2) is never mentioned, so I guess intelligence and what the enemy was up to was not a big concern for Mahler. The maps are few and crude. The only slight value of this book is the paucity of other armored unit memoirs from Vietnam. This book is far inferior to Sergeant Ralph Zumbro's Tank Sergeant.

A Superlative Account Of Vietnam 1967-8.......2000-12-27

Major Mahler served in an Armored cavalry unit in Vietnam before and during the Tet Offensive, and here he relates his experiences during that time.

One may not associate armor with Vietnam, but armor did play a significant role in the war, as Major Mahler demonstrates here.

The stories within run the gamut, from the Birddog pilot shot down to the discovery of VC grains hidden along a road that the troopers confiscate, only to find that a nearby village gets pillaged by the VC because the grain was hidden along the road for the VC to take; the troopers gather enough grain to give back to the stricken villagers. There is also the tunnel that an APC falls into - and promptly unearths a surprised NVA general. There are the running shootouts during the Tet Offensive, and children accidently hit by .50 caliber machine gun fire and operated on by Army medics. There is the night an enemy company literally walks into an ambush by armor and a delightfully one-sided battle with an NVA batallion holed up in a large village, a battle that somewhat resembles the climax of Invasion USA.

There is also Major Mahler's note on the situation on the ground following Tet - of how farmers who could not use roads the year before could now take their crops to market, "and this was progress that could be seen and felt in a war where progress could not easily be quantified."

Major Mahler takes us to Vietnam through his words and we see what went on.

Ringed in Steel: Armored Cavalry in Viet Nam.......2000-04-19

Having served under Major Mahler during a time covered by part of his book, I can say everthing presented in the book is accurate. The book contains a factual account of the actions of the 3rd of the 5th Armored Cavalry in Viet Nam while Major Mahler was Executive Officer. With it lack of blood and guts, or gory details, it is a book which my wife and family can read as a way of getting some insite into what my life was like during those days so long ago. For years I had wondered why our officers had kept bringing us back to the same over-night position. We came back so many times that, as expected, we were attacked in force by a well prepared NVA. Our losses were high, both in terms of men and equipment. Even as a PFC, I had known our repetative use of the same positions, right along the side of Highway 1, was potentially desasterious. Until reading "Ringed in Steel", I had placed the blame opon our officers. Major Mahler exposed the orders, given by the Marines, objected to by our officers, which dictated that our unit return to this position every night. My confidence is now renewed in the decision making capability of the United States Army Officers Corps. For an insite into how our military operates, how decisions are made, what factors enter into those decisions, this book is a must read.

Excellent and true.......2002-06-04

Knowing nick in life did not take away the impact this book had on me. It tells his story and does it well. I commend Nicks mother for her courage in taking the time to write this story to share with everyone. I can only hope that this story has as much of an impact on people as Nick did in life.

A Young Man's Journey with AIDS.......2000-10-13

In this book Nick Trevor has found out that he has AIDS. His mother a strict catholic comes to terms with her son and both open up to a new way of thinking. They find the answer to the question when bad things happen to people, Will that make the person bad?

This book is different in that the voice of the writer switches from Nick to his mother. His mother being the true author works to write the book as if her son had written it himself. I found this different and interesting.

I was really impressed with this book on the way that Nick's mother shows how she accepted the fact that she would have to bury her son. Luellen, Nick's mother, was a strict catholic but supported her son when he was sick and needed help the most. The book takes you through both Nick and Luellen's saga as he slowly slips away. I liked that the book told the story of what happened not just the facts that AIDS is deadly and very painful to the person and the family. I think that Luellen through the book portrays a normal person in a changing world, at the start she knew very little about AIDS and what medicine could be taken. She has general stereotypes about AIDS victims and has to break through them so that she can help her son. In the book page 98 Luellen is meeting with a doctor and the doctor wants to know what she thinks about her son possibly being gay and waits for a reaction. "Look, Doctor, no parent would want their child to be homosexual. In this world, all other things being equal, the life of a homosexual is much more difficult row to hoe than the life of a heterosexual...But if my son is gay, he's gay, and I would love him just the same." So as this shows Luellen accepts what has happened to her son and works to help him enjoy his life and helps Nick fight until the end.

I really enjoyed the book and think that it would be something great for everyone to read. One area of improvement would be that sometimes it switches between who is writing and makes it hard to understand. Other than that, I think it is a great new look to a very modern topic and something that everyone could benefit from reading.

Walker's a Little too Self-pitying.......2007-05-30

When a young med school student ("Walker") decides that a young, attractive woman who had just attempted suicide needed love, he was correct. "Michelle" needed love, but she more desperately needed help. Like many borderline females, Michelle is unbelievably sexy, impulsive, full of rage, childlike, and incredibly needy. Because of his misguided and naive attempts to save her, her rage, self-doubt, and hate mushroom. Walker is overmatched and Michelle's unrelenting suicide attempts and physical attacks nearly destroy him. The story is gripping; but, worse, it is pathetic. Walker makes little effort to understand Michelle, to participate in her therapy, or to get her to see a better psychiatrist. His "love" is weak and amounts to nothing more than fearful placating. I don't know what horrified me more, his limitations or her rage. Walker unabashedly places the blame on Michelle - who was too mentally ill to controll her behavior. A far better book is Rachel Reiland's account of her recovery from BPD, "Get Me Out of Here." Rachel's psychiatrist is an astounding physcian and healer. He never allows Rachel to manipulate or intimidate him -- and he is committed to making her well. Where Walker leads the reader to believe those with BPD are forever consigned to hell, Rachel's psychiatrist leads her to heaven.

In the story you will meet a young doctor who gets caught up in a whirl wind romance with a young beautiful patient after a suicide attempt. He is deeply attracted and fascinated by her but completely unprepared for the full force of the dark side of her personality. The book offers no solutions but if you have anyone in your life who you even suspect of being borderline personality then you should buy this book.

Even though the case of borderline personality described in this book is mild I still think that the book is an excellent example of the general behaviour of the borderline personality and the affects on those that love them. This book will help you understand the common behaviours of borderline personalities. Buy this book and know that you are not alone and that you are not to blame.

The book is absolutely invaluable in helping you realise that you are not alone. Many people feel very alone when in relationship with someone who has borderline personality simply because they can not talk to anyone about their relationship because other people can not relate to the behaviour of a borderline personality because it is so far removed from reality. Here at last you will find someone who understands what you are going through and can "talk" to you through this book.

Borderline personalities are often in denial about having borderline even after receiving a diagnosis they will usually vacillate between blaming you and complete denial and only very rarely evening admitting that they even have a problem. If you suspect that someone in your life has borderline but you are not sure then buy this book and find out. After reading this book you will be know if the person in your life has borderline or not because the `evidence' presented in this book is simply overwhelming.

Excellent Book on BPD.......2005-11-02

Excellent book. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who had a relationship with someone with BPD. I had the misfortune of getting involved with a woman with BPD and almost lost my sanity. These people are like children, following their impulses, having no sense of a stable self. In my experience the woman with BPD changed from one mask to another, depending on whom she was with. At times she was very sweet like an angel, then at other times she would turn into a raging monster. She had numerous affairs and she lied about them. She appeared happy at one moment and then she'd get really depressed. She'd also accuse me of things I haven't done. Getting immersed into the world of someone with BPD can be a real nightmare. I'm glad that there are books like this, helping people to identify it. People with BPD appear interesting, charming and exciting until you get too close. Then they react with rage and accusations. And I had to deal with all sorts of lies and manipulations, becoming more isolated and depressed. I hope this book helps others understand what BPD really is and help all involved in the healing process.

Too many errors and full of fluff.......2005-09-25

When a novel has errors it loses its credibility and I stop dead in my reading track.

On page 94 and 95 of the hardback copy, the couple goes to a laundry and proceed to fight. Suddently the laundry contains article from their apartment,which they demolish as they fight.

Mistakes continue on pages 127 where the author/doctor's younger sister,credited with the first college diploma in his family, died at the age of 22. Did he not receive a diploma?

Age-related errors continue on page 137.

AS far as its BPD content, the novel is fluffy.

It was like reliving my marriage.......2005-06-11

I have to start out by saying that I am not neutral with regards to borderline personality disorder. Like the author, I was married to a person who suffers from this disease. Reading this book was very eerie for me because it brought back a lot of memories and experiences which I had mostly managed to forget. For me, the biggest take-away was being able to hand the book over to a friend or family member so that they could understand just a bit what it was like to live with a borderline -- the spiraling descent into madness, and the slow crawl out. The author had the advantage of clinical training and expertise and was STILL drawn into a relationship which, at the very least, derailed his career for a couple of years. Your average person on the street is much less well equipped to deal with mental illness. If you are stuck in a relationship with a borderline, giving this book to friends and family may help them to understand how you got into this mess and why it is so hard for you to get out. If you are the parent or sibling of a loved one who is clearly enmeshed in a bad relationship or marriage and can't seem to get out, this book may help you understand why.
