Book Description
"Provocative... Challenging... The missing piece... Put words to what I've always known and couldn't explain... A new world view..."
The WEL-Systems(TM) approach to organizational, professional and personal change is a new, powerful and effective model that goes far beyond tips and techniques and works with the power of the individual. Using cutting-edge science and principles from quantum biology and their relationship to organizational systems; and grounded in the power of the potential of the individual, the WEL-Systems(TM) model helps us understand - finally! - how we are part of the problem and how we can become a dynamic force in the solution.
This book:
* Puts the responsibility and the power back where it belongs - with each of us as an individual.
* Demonstrates that we are not victims, nor are we helpless and at the mercy of 'the system' given that we are the system.
* Reminds us that we always choose from intelligence. The question is: are the choices we're making creating the kind of environments/experiences, at work and at home, that we want to live?
* Strips away the illusions that prevent us from being willing to take action.
* Identifies the most prevalent model for corporate structures and reveals why it doesn't get us where we want to go.
* Identifies the habits of thought that prevent us from taking action in our own lives.
* Identifies the tools that will make a difference in the quality of our work/life.

Women in the Military Who Were NOT Nurses.......2003-10-17
This book opened my eyes to the experiences of women who served in the Army (and the other service branches) during World War II. I found out they were not all nurses or "donut dollies" but serious and dedicated women who left the safety of their homes to "join up". Although Ms. Pollard chose to use language more common during the Second World War, I forgave her as I read because the stories were enlightening. For example, I had no idea how other women saw these soldiers in uniform. The responses were often jealousy and fear that the women in the Army were out to take other women's husbands away from them!
Ms. Pollard reflects on the variety of jobs the women took on while the men went to fight; everything from office work to ferrying servicemen into battle. The amazing thing was that after the military women came home, they donned their kitchen aprons and went right back to housekeeping and bringing up their children with litle or no thought that they had broken through much of the sex bias about women performing "mens work". Some of these "powerful" women themselves failed to connect that they had become role models for their children and grandchildren.
Ms. Pollard also reflects on the "shell shocked" soldiers she saw and worked with at the end of the war. It is gut wrenching.
I highly recommend this book as a means to learn about roles women have played in our contemporary history; a subject LEFT OUT by most teachers in high school and college these days.

wrestling with acceptance.......2001-05-24
Author Caren Topliff is correct in her assertion that there are not enough resources available to help patients and families faced with spinal cord injury (SCI). Wrestling Back should be applauded for its stark and unembellished storytelling. It is a thought provoking memoir, and very hard to put down. Topliff includes an appendix with contact information for SCI advocacy and treatment resources.
As an able-bodied person, can I imagine my legs not responding to my commands? I try. Can I imagine how permanent the word permanent can be? Wrestling Back is a terrifying first-person account written by the mother of an Olympic-bound college athlete who is permanently paralyzed in a car accident. Topliff's story of her son's struggle to live drives it home that there is a huge family drama behind spinal cord injuries. Even when the patient regains independence, the struggle to accept a new life with physical limits is unthinkable to most of us.
Topliff deserves praise for her painstaking and candid account of the tensions in her family, the medical care her son received, and her exhausting vigilance. It is notable that she spent much of her energy convincing her son to fight for his life yet couldn't always support herself in the same way: her quality of life often seemed depressingly low. Maybe it was the relentless pace and tone in which she wrote the story, with intense focus on the central experience of supporting her son, but I felt drained after finishing the book. It takes a pragmatic and focussed mindset to support someone who has suffered a major trauma. Topliff was as much a survivor as her son, but her efforts took an incredible toll on her.
In a physical sense, the SCI patient (statistically, a young adult) becomes an infant again at the time of the injury, and the mother often builds an exclusive relationship with the born again child, monopolizing the chores of physically caring for that child to the detriment of her family and herself. Topliff exhausted her physical and spiritual self as Larry's primary caregiver. Larry not only went through a rebirth as a quadraplegic, but also a second adolescence. Until he married, his mother lived with him in the same house, sleeping with one eye open and monitoring every aspect of his health. She didn't or couldn't allow her son to be fully independent. While it can't be denied that Larry had many physical complications and needed of a lot of care, is it possible that Topliff, in spite of herself, internalized the stereotype of the helpless disabled child-person in the wheelchair?
Through much of the book I felt Topliff was hoping for unattainable outcomes, for a cure. Perhaps she used hope as a lifeline. Unrealistic hope can be a defense mechanism against facing something that feels unacceptable. It is part of the human condition to long for what you cannot have. For someone whose body has been broken, whose sense of self has been shattered -- this longing for a return to 'normalcy' must become acute and painful, and a mother's instinct would want to relieve that pain.
A telling omission in this very personal story is dialogue with other family members, including Larry. Topliff's emotional journey is a lonely one. She describes expressions in her son's eyes that substituted for words, and she describes a lack of communication in the family. Families often shut down in reaction to this kind of life change, as a way of coping with the trauma. The drama and suddenness of it, the social stigma and the physical and financial burdens can be too much to take in all at once, and can pull families apart. It is uncannily similar to the scenario of facing homosexuality in a family member. Just as noone chooses to be disabled, many homosexual individuals would not choose to be gay, given the choice, because of the stigmas and difficulties it will present them in their lives, from social awkwardness to rejection and discrimination to a reduction of civil rights and on down the line. The new identity of the family member is something the family must learn to accept. If they will achieve closeness, they must learn to embrace it, despite the possible negative reactions of those outside the family.
There is a definite and vast canyon between Before and After a spinal cord injury. The injured person is not the only one to see the moment of their injury as a watershed. Parents have dreams that they project onto their children -- and partners and friends have an image of their loved one as 'able-bodied'. In Wrestling Back, Larry's parents were committed to helping him realize his goal of competing in the Olympics. A successful athlete, Larry's body and physicality were a part of his identity. Not only did friends and family see Larry in this role, he saw himself this way as well. Someone who arrives After the SCI has occurred might not see these Before ghost images so strongly, and could be less likely to have expectations of something different -- at the same time, they may possibly overlook the person who existed before the injury. There is no denying that Larry has changed, and there is no denying that Larry is still Larry.
In the closing paragraph of the book, Topliff explains in a very deliberate fashion the pride that she and her family feel for Larry and his accomplishments (he became a wrestling coach and a father). Her need to state this so explicitly pinpoints one of the most difficult struggles of SCI: the difficulty of acceptance. Prejudices and stereotypes of the disabled exist in all of us: not only in the mind of the public but in the families of the disabled, and most poignantly, within the disabled person him/herself. The preservation of pride in the face of a permanently disabling injury is the most incredible struggle of all.
Caren, i cannot thank you enough for telling your story.

Book Description
At 3:58 in the morning of June 5, 2002, Ed and Lois Smart awoke to the sound of their nine-year-old daughter Mary Katherine’s frightened voice. “She’s gone. Elizabeth is gone.” At first they thought she was having a bad dream about her older sister, but Mary Katherine’s seeming bad dream would quickly become their worst nightmare. Their daughter Elizabeth was gone.
They were not sure why the media picked up on Elizabeth’s story, but after their daughter was kidnapped she became the whole world’s daughter. After nine months of a strange, hard, sometimes rewarding, but mostly painful journey, Elizabeth was miraculously returned to them. Just as millions throughout the world had grieved for her loss, now they celebrated her safe return.
In Bringing Elizabeth Home, Ed and Lois share the pain of every parent’s worst fear: “What would I do if my child was taken from me?” They also share a story of great hope, strong faith, and trust in God. The Smart family had always been devoted to their Mormon faith, but through their terribly painful experience they gained a tremendous inner strength, which became the key to their survival. They write, “Having our daughter back home, in our arms, is nothing short of a miracle. It is the ultimate proof that God answers prayers. Granted, sometimes the answer is not the one we pray for, but still it remains an answer. We feel truly blessed that He answered our prayers the way we had hoped for, although we realize, regretfully, that this is not always the outcome in kidnapping cases. We have met so many families with missing children and we’ve seen how deep their pain goes . . . But what we hope to convey through our journey of faith and hope is that with a strong belief in God, all things are possible. Miracles do happen.”
In the end, the Smarts’ story brings one point poignantly home--nothing is more important in this world than family. Not money. Not work. Not a fancy new car or an expensive, big house. Family, the prayers of so many friends and strangers, and trust in God are what got them through this experience--and having survived, they have no doubt that they can persevere in any situation as long as those three things are in their lives. Though their story is filled with many incredible twists and turns, they never lost focus on what was important: bringing Elizabeth home.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing!.......2006-06-13
The first time I read this book, I was watching it all happen. i'ts like I was invisible. I admire Elizabeth for having the guts to do what she did. I would have fought back, but she did it the safe way, she didn't resist. Reading this book, you feel like you know the Smart family. I pray for all Missing Children everywhere. Elizabeth is the luckiest girl in the world! Mary Katharine was so cool and collected. she is amazing too. read this book!
Bringing Elizabeth Home.......2005-03-07
Bringing Elizabeth Home was a heartwarming story about Elizabeth's tragic journey. I would of preferred it if Elizabeth told the story rather then Elizabeth's parents: Ed and Lois Smart. But I think that there were rumors going around about Elizabeth's story, and they just wanted to tell the world what really happened.
They are a really strong family for having to go through Elizabeth's kidnapping. Escpecially her sister (Mary-Katherine) for having to see her sister getting kidnapped, and not being able to do anything to save her sister. I enjoyed reading about the Smart's sad but also happy story.
The subtitle says it all, really. .......2005-01-09
The subtitle says it all, really. Readers expecting to learn details of Elizabeth Smart's captivity should look elsewhere; there are no such revelations in this book. Her parents leave it to Elizabeth to tell that story herself, someday, if she chooses to do so. This is Ed and Lois Smart telling their own story, and that of their family's other members, during the months between Elizabeth's kidnapping and her return.
Faith played a huge role in keeping the Smart family's hope alive during those months, so it's natural for them to speak of it often. For some readers this may give their book a "preachy" quality, while for others it may strike exactly the right note. True crime this is not - it's more like a series of essays, sharing each parent's feelings while walking us through the events as they remember them.
Worth reading, but oddly dry for all the material's tremendous emotional impact. I came away feeling that someone - authors, ghostwriter, editor(s), I couldn't be sure who - worked so hard at avoiding sensationalism that the effort backfired. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.
A story of faith and hope..........2004-09-16
As the Smart family has said, they wrote this book themselves because they knew their story would be told, and they simply wanted to ensure that the story was truly being told from their perspective. Anyone who claims that this book was written for profit is off his/her rocker. The Smarts are a very wealthy family who had no need to profit from their nightmare.
As far as suggesting that they were hiding a pregnancy, congratulations on your math skills, but pregnancy doesn't show for at least four months. Are you suggesting that they kept her away just for fun for the remainder of the time? What a preposterous notion! Additionally, while the LDS faith teaches abstinence, it also has an social services system which includes counseling, and if needed, placing babies for adoption, showing that they do recognize that unmarried people have babies and that they are ready to help.
Lastly, my largest commendation to the Smart family. This experience was a test of faith that no family would ever want to endure. Ed and Lois Smart took a terrible situation and used it to rally for the Amber Alert, and turned their nightmare into a blessing for other families. There were few that believed that Elizabeth would return alive. The Smarts gave the example that nobody has the right to question another's faith.
Stolen Innocence.......2004-07-23
As I read your comments and after reading this book myself, I wanted to suggest that you read another book that is about a much less publicized kidnapping of a Mormon girl some 30 years ago. The book is Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story. I found that Stolen Innocence took a more realistic approach to a bizarre and terrifying experience. Perhaps the Smarts weren't quite ready to share the complete experience, beyond just the justifiable gratitude they felt for Elizabeth's return. The author of Stolen Innocence is not afraid to takes a look at her own failings and weaknesses during the tragic time of her daughter's kidnapping and the years following the ordeal. It looks at the family's ignorance and victimization, but more importantly aslo their hope and strength. I highly recommend it. I recently saw the subject/victim of the "Stolen Innocence" book on Good Morning America and could hardly believe her story, so I had to buy the book and read it for myself!

In Bringing Elizabeth Home, Ed and Lois share the pain of every parent's worst fear: "What would I do if my child was taken from me?" They also share a story of great hope, strong faith, and trust in God. The Smart family had always been devoted to their Mormon faith, but through their terribly painful experience they gained a tremendous inner strength, which became the key to their survival. They write, "Having our daughter back home, in our arms, is nothing short of a miracle. We have met so many families with missing children and we've seen how deep their pain goes . . . But what we hope to convey through our journey of faith and hope is that with a strong belief in God, all things are possible. Miracles do happen."
In the end, the Smarts' story brings one point poignantly homenothing is more important in this world than family. Not money. Not work. Not a fancy new car or an expensive, big house. Family, the prayers of so many friends and strangers, and trust in God are what got them through this experienceand having survived, they have no doubt that they can persevere in any situation as long as those three things are in their lives. Though their story is filled with many incredible twists and turns, they never lost focus on what was important: bringing Elizabeth home.
Book Description
At 3:58 in the morning of June 5, 2002, Ed and Lois Smart awoke to the sound of their nine-year-old daughter Mary Katherine's frightened voice. "She's gone. Elizabeth is gone." At first they thought she was having a bad dream about her older sister, but Mary Katherine's "bad dream" would quickly become their worst nightmare. Their daughter Elizabeth was gone.
They were not sure why the media picked up on Elizabeth's story, but after their daughter was kidnapped she became the whole world's daughter. After nine months of a strange, hard, sometimes rewarding, but mostly painful journey, Elizabeth was miraculously returned to them. Just as millions throughout the world had grieved for her loss, now they celebrated her safe return.
