4 out of 5 stars a great find for HR professionals.......2001-05-11

I should state outright that I'm not an HR professional -- this book is required reading for a course I'm taking. Rothwell writes a very professional (much more so than some of the other HR texts I've been assigned) and well designed textbook that makes it relatively easy to transition a traditional HR office to more of a Human performance office. Every once in a while you'll think to yourself, "well isn't that obvious," (hire bright workers and you won't need to train them as much...), but Rothwell does provide charts and checklists that provide a blueprint to enact these ideas which can only help an organization be more productive. Highly recommended in its field.

                          Book Description

Patrick Moore, one of the world’s best-known astronomers and host of the BBC’s record-breaking series The Sky at Night, joins forces with celebrated “space artist” David Hardy in a lavishly illustrated look at our evolving images of space. Looking back to their 1972 classic, Challenge of the Stars, Moore and Hardy show how early space art sometimes proved amazingly prophetic—incorporating ideas about spacecraft and space stations that would later come true. They also show how some of the spectacular fantasies of the ’70s gave way to realities more fantastic still, such as the canyons of Mars, the geysers on Triton, neutron stars, and black holes.

                          Book Description

The Columbia tragedy of 2003 left the United States questioning its actions in space. Have we financially starved the program into an inability to act? Have we chosen the best course of action for our money? Even deeper questions remain: What should our goals be in space? How critical is space to our future? What role should the government play? How much are we willing to spend? From historical context to the Columbia accident and recommendations, from possible destinations to methods and policies for getting there, with stops at space advocacy and the new directions for NASA, Tom Hill takes the reader through many facets and viewpoints in space. Insightful, well-researched, and at times funny, Space: What Now? is for anyone who wants to talk intelligently about humankinds future beyond the atmosphere.

                          Customer Reviews:

                          5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and timely!!.......2005-07-21

In Space: What Now?, Author Tom Hill takes us on a bold, jargonless, insight-filled journey through the past, present, and future of activities in space. We are briefly introduced to the various players - space agencies from around the world, as well as public, non-profit outreach groups and private entities working on access-to-space issues. Opinions are stated as opinions, and facts are stated as facts.

The book really shines in the middle chapters, where Mr. Hill uses a unique writing viewpoint and his extensive background in both military and civilian space operations to skillfully dissect some of the myths holding us back in space. He proposes several practical solutions to the most difficult issues. My two favorites are separation of human/cargo launches and creation of orbital fuel depots, but read the book to understand the proper context and limitations of these concepts and many more.

Finally, the latter chapters will make a convincing case for what we should be doing in space, Moon/Mars, and how we should be going about it. You won't agree with every opinion in this book, most likely, but you will certainly come away with exciting new perspectives, thoughts, and ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Projecting paths for our space future.......2005-03-03

Note: a version of my review was published in the Huntsville (AL) Times.

In his introduction to Tom Hill's "Space: What Now?", astronaut Buzz Aldrin recommends the book as a necessary contribution to our "current national debate on space". Unfortunately the debate that began with the Columbia accident seems to have withered, and the book's content is already slightly dated.

Nevertheless, Mr. Hill has done us a service in a summary of space exploration before 2003, analyzing in some detail the Columbia accident, and then in a reasonably even-handed way projecting a number of different paths for our space future.

Hill attacks several "myths" and misconceptions that may have weakened our enthusiasm for space travel. Astronauts really are human beings. Heavy lift rockets like the Saturn V are not essential. Space hardware isn't inherently more complicated than anything else. Humans and robots aren't competitors, they can and should work together in space.

Beyond our current efforts in space close to Earth, Hill suggests a specific range of new destinations - high Earth orbit, the Moon, asteroids, and (where his biases show slightly) Mars. Hill has some interesting specific ideas for a public-private partnership in space development. An orbital depot could allow in-orbit refueling; the government could promise a flat-rate contract, like a continuous X prize, for any private company able to supply the depot with water (to be split into hydrogen and oxygen fuel).

Many of Hill's ideas have been either put into action or somewhat mooted by the new US space plan announced last year. Hill devotes a chapter to discussing that. He shows a balanced mix of skepticism and optimism: he's willing to give this plan a chance to take the steps forward we need, but it's not everything he's looking for.

Hill's discussion of space activist groups ends with a call for unity, followed in the epilogue with a "this has essentially happened" note. I met the author at the July "Space Exploration Alliance" event; the unity there was encouraging, but it's not clear it will last.

Much of the book shows an enthusiasm more for technology than for the economic "dollar" questions that are really key to our space future. Some of the numbers seem wrong (for example on solar power satellite launch requirements) but to his credit Hill covers a number of the market issues that could lead us down the route to reusable space flight and much lower costs to orbit.

Recent developments are noted in the epilogue, and the author has set up an active "blog" at spacewhatnow.com to stay up to date. Read this book if you're looking for a good summary of where we are, and where we're going, in space.

My uncle lent me this book and I have enjoyed every page of it. The Harrisons do an excellent job enlightening the reader about the basic wildlife species found in most any backyard. In addition, if you don't have these species showing up around your bird feeder, bath or in the trees, and meadows and the like around your home, they give hints to help you attract them. If you enjoy wildlife and want to learn as much as possible about the species that inhabit the treelines, sub divisions, marshes and gardens that surround you, this book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, albeit heavy, book set on Philippine Orchids.......2001-05-24

This large and heavy two-volume set is the largest and most complete reference that I know of dealing with Philippine orchids. It was published in Pasig, Metro Manila in 1984 by the Eugenio Lopez Foundation Inc. The set weighs in at a hefty 17 pounds and measures 14" x 10.5" x 3" in the slipcase.

Volume 1 (360 p.) features predominantly text, but contains a a few photos and a lot of line drawings. There are six chapters, three appendices, a bibliography and index. Chapter 1: About Orchids (p.1-6); Ch. 2: History (p. 7-14) and A Folio of Botanical Paintings and Drawings (p.15-49; very lovely); Ch. 3: Geography and Climate (p. 49-57); Ch. 4: Endemism and Distribution of Philippine Orchids (p. 57-77); Ch. 5: Orchid classification (p. 77-83); Ch. 6: Philippine Orchidaceae (p. 83-328); Appendix 1: Orchid Authorities (useful list); App. 2: Changes in Nomenclature; App. 3: Glossary. The Geography and Climate chapter (3) includes maps of Soil Cover, Climate, Humidity, Rainfall, and Temperature. The maps in Chapter four are very pretty, each two full pages, and they include Distribution of Aerides,Vanda, Trichoglottis & Renanthera in Southeast Asia and the Philippines; Bulbophyllum; Dendrobium; Eria; Phalaenopsis; and the Southeast Asian Region Showing the Asiatic and Australian Continental Shelves with Wallace's and Weber's Lines. Individual species descriptions in Chapter 6 comprise the bulk of Volume one. There are four to five species on each page, with plant description and measurements, original publication information, locality and altitude. A very attractive feature of this volume are the large, stylized, dropped/descending initials with orchid background motifs, used in the text section headings, Index, and Bibliography.

Volume 2 features 260 full-page color plates, two appendices and an acknowledgements section. Appendix 1 covers the Flowering Seasons of Philippine Orchids (p. 253-310); Appendix 2 provides columnar tables of the Distribution of Philippine Orchids (p. 311-374). The photos include 21 Aerides, 38 Dendrobiums, 61 Phalaenopsis, and 10 Trichoglottis, and 31 Vandas. Other genera are represented by fewer than 10 photos each, giving you an idea of the variety of Philippine orchids. Many of these photos are truly stunning anlarger than life-size. In particular, there are several two-page photos, such as Trichoglottis brachiata, Vanda Merrillii and Vanda Sanderiana. The distribution tables identify the altititude range, general location of the species in Luzon, Visayas, Palawan or Mindano, and occurences in any foreign countries.

Available for US$358 from Koeltz Scientific Books in Germany, or US$250. from Tecson Orchids in the Philippines (plus postage).

1861. Volume 2 of 5. Lord Macaulay wrote this history of England from the accession of King James the Second down to a time which was within the memory of men still living. He recounts the errors which, in a few months, alienated a loyal gentry and priesthood from the House of Stuart. He traces the course of that revolution which terminated the long struggle between our sovereigns and their parliaments, and bound up together the rights of the people and the title of the reigning dynasty. Lord Macaulay relates how the new settlement was, during many troubled years, successfully defended against foreign and domestic enemies; how, under that settlement, the authority of law and the security of property were found to be compatible with a liberty of discussion and of individual action never before known.

This book brings together fourteen of the most influential articles on the English Civil War, which have appeared over the last thirty years, introduced and contextualized for the reader. Peter Gaunt provides a substantial and wide-ranging introduction giving the essential background to the period and key debates within it, and helping readers to understand and interpret the following chapters. The English Civil War: The Essential Readings includes coverage of all the major debates on this key period in English and British history. It examines the different interpretations of the causes of the war, encompassing long-term origins and short-term causes in the British as well as an English context. It covers key themes surrounding the course of the civil war of 1642-46, and aspects of the impact and consequences of the civil war during the late 1640s and beyond. It discusses military and political affairs alongside social, religious and economic developments, providing a rounded picture of the period. This book not only presents an essential source of key articles, it also provides the critical context to understanding the nature of past and continuing historical debates surrounding the major aspects of the civil war.

This book rambles quite a bit and provides a wealth not very targeted information. Do I really need to know how the rain cycle works to survive in the suburbs? Or how a generator works (without instructions on how to build my own out of scraps)?

In all, the useful information in this book would fill a smallish pamphlet. The rest is filler.

                                            A great disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Good ideas on how to survive in the Big City.......2001-07-23

Where to get food, water, shelter in the city? What happens when there's a disaster? This book is a decent start. Lots of helpful chapters on how to get the essentials, as well as what common edible plants grow in the city.

Another food-for-thought thing you can read is the chapter in Way of the Scout (also by Brown) on his first solo trip to New York City.

4 out of 5 stars As a city dweller, I find this book very informative........1999-05-26

This book is a valuable resource of information for city and suburban dwellers, considering the impending Y2K situation at hand. Although the information in this book is important to know in any situation, I purchased it with the intention that it would help my family and I to cope with any Y2K related problems. The book helps to remove a fear of the unknown by explaining how household systems work, as well as how we are all connected to our ecological systems. When you realize that your basic needs for survival are: shelter, water, fire and food, in that order, you can live without all the other "wants". After reading Tom Brown's book, I feel better prepared to handle any emergency.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A "MUST-READ" to prepare for Y2K Transition!.......1998-11-02

Wow...if you had to pick any one book to have by your side during an emergency, this is it! Brown includes tons of practical advice especially relavant for getting prepared for the Year 2000 time change and probable temporary utility breakdowns, not to mention longer term survival techniques. Gets you thinking, that's for sure!

Keen book. Brown has lived the skills, and it shows.
