Customer Reviews:
Good for the short attention span.......2007-07-24
I used this book in a graduate-level seminar, and was completely disappointed in it. The articles are brief and offer little practical advice or straightforward descriptions of performance management systems. The empirical support is not presented; in general, you get the feeling of reading one case study after another.

Book Description
The sinking of the USS Maine plunged the United States into war with Spain. A young Lieutenant Richmond Pearson Hobson was just beginning his career as a Naval Constructor when he was given the job of sinking the collier USS Merrimac in the Santiago de Cuba harbor. Although their enterprise was not completely successful and they became Spanish prisoners, the daring of Hobson and his crew captured the imagination of a nation hungry for a hero.
An extremely good-looking, single man, he became the "victim of a kissing craze" and has been called America's most kissed man. His life was one of contrasts as he championed a strong Navy in the Pacific before Japan was considered a threat; supported women's rights and marched with them at a time when no self-respecting male would consider such an action; as a Southerner, he supported civil rights; and fought for prohibition and world-wide narcotics control.
Customer Reviews:
Biography of an unusual man who predicted political changes.......2001-05-18
Rear Admiral Richmond Pearson Hobson came into public prominence in 1898 when the Spanish-American War was not going well for the United States. Hobson undertook a seemingly suicide mission designed to sink the USS Merrimac in Santiago Harbor in Cuba and survived. This was a complex man who was both a romantic and deeply disillusioned, who had loyal friends and determined detractors, who experience high popularity and public rejection, wh was considered by some as an extremely moral person and by others as a self-righteous crusader. This was also a man who became an Alabama Congressman, a Civil Rights advocate, a Women's Rights advocate, and an who advocated international drug controls and prohibition. Richmond Pearson Hobson: The Naval Hero From Magnolia Grove is the impressively researched and superbly presented, and highly recommended biography of an unusual man who predicted political changes well before they became reality and very strongly advocated the need for an American Naval power in the Pacific to deter the Japanese. A stance that brought him severe ridicule for forty years, until Pearl Harbor and the onslaught of World War II.

Robert Leonard Reid, a well-known writer on alpinism, delights in the satori-inducing dangers of mountaineering. "Once on vertical rock in desert country," he writes in Mountains of the Great Blue Dream, "I reached for a crack, inserted my fingers, stepped up, and stared into the steely eyes of a rattlesnake coiled two feet from my hand." And that's just a start, for this fine collection of essays recounts many other death-defying adventures endured in nights spent pinned to rock walls in howling winds, days battling ice storms and uncooperative ropes. But this is not just a book of macho accomplishment on the high peaks: Reid writes affectionately of the mountain landscapes among which he has walked and climbed, lending his book a rare and welcome poetry. --Gregory McNamee

Native Kansan Earl Browder brought a midwestern twang to American Communism, leading the Party's U.S. branch from 1932 to 1945, but his individualistic streak was also his downfall.
James G. Ryan follows Browder's career through his adolescent canvasing for Socialist presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs and imprisonment for pacifist resistance to World War I to his rise through the ranks of the CPUSA and guidance of the party during the Popular Front years. Although he professed loyalty to Stalin, Browder believed that he could step away from the party line; by the end of World War II, his mistaken belief would result in a Stalin-sanctioned ouster. Ryan's biography ably delineates how, more than anyone else, Browder had--but ultimately mishandled--the chance "to weld the best of Communism with the best of the American tradition."
Book Description
A Kansas farm boy corrupted by the perks of power.
“Ryan’s study may well stand for many years as the definitive biography.”--Society
“This meticulously researched study, which has made excellent use of both Soviet records and FBI files, shows how fatally flawed was Browder’s attempt to reconcile Stalinism, Americanism, and his own grandiose ambitions. A valuable contribution to the history of American radicalism, this book is highly recommended for all readers interested in the history of American politics and social movements.”--Choice
“The first comprehensive biography of the Communist leader . . . the body of the book centers on Browder’s years as the [Communist] party’s national leader from the early 1930s to his removal as secretary general and subsequent expulsion from the CPUSA (American Communist Party) after 1945. The book’s most significant characteristic is the extensive use of recently opened files on the CPUSA housed in the Russian Center for the Preservation and Study of Documents of Recent History in Moscow.”--Journal of American History
James G. Ryan is Professor of History at Texas A&M University at Galveston and coeditor of The Historical Dictionary of the Gilded Age.

Book Description
As young girls, a year apart in age, Alison and Amy Wilensky were almost indistinguishable. And they were inseparable: growing up in a comfortable Boston suburb, they were never far from each other's side, wearing matching dresses, playing the same games, eating the same food. But Alison began gaining weight in elementary school and by the time she was sixteen was morbidly obese. The sisters remained close, but over the years the daily indignities and affronts endured by Alison took their toll, reshaping her identity indelibly and affecting the sisters' relationship in unanticipated ways. In her late twenties, Alison underwent gastric bypass surgery, in the wake of which she lost more than 150 pounds and achieved the shape she'd dreamed of for so much of her life. It wasn't just her body that was transformed: every significant relationship in her life was profoundly altered. The Weight of It is a universal story of how we discover what makes us who we are, and how we become the people we want to be. Amy Wilensky is uniquely equipped to write this book, and she does so with fine perception, insight, and compassion.
Customer Reviews:
Not really about anything.......2006-12-01
This book isn't really about anything. It is mostly little details about various events in the lives of the two sisters, with no actual point or meaning. There is in fact very little about weight loss, weight loss surgery, or the changes that took place in the girl's life after she had the surgery. Most of the book is dedicated to endless details about parties that the sisters held and shopping trips they took. There is also a one-and-a-half page quote from Alice in Wonderland. There are far too many trivial details and far too little actual interesting content regarding what Allison went through.
What's more, this book isn't even in the first person. It's by the SISTER of someone who had weight loss surgery, so really has no idea what the experience is like. When I saw the book I bought it, curious as to how a story of human tragedy and triumph can be interesting when told from the point of view of someone who wasn't even there. Now I know: it can't.
I would've given one more star for PICTURES!!!!.......2006-01-21
This was a book I couldn't put down. I truly enjoyed it. But to me, there was ONE major flaw: no pictures!
In a book that details a woman's weight loss struggle, pictures are an absolute requirement, at least in my mind. Even the author herself states that Before and After pictures are her favorite part of any magazine. So why didn't we get any in this book? Heck, I would even take an 'After' with no 'Before.'
Why is this so gosh-darn important to me? Because like most people, I want to see who I am reading about. Since I am taking the time to read an entire book about a person, I think I should be given at least one glimpse of this person...and no, the childhood photo on the front cover of the book doesn't count. Like most people, when a woman has made herself over from an obese, all-black-clothes-wearing wallflower into a stunning wearer of Betsey Johnson dresses, I want to see that dazzling transformation. And, like most people....I am just nosey.
Good book otherwise.
There is a fascinating book here, but not on weight issues.......2004-06-12
Amy's sister Alison certainly sounds like a person that would be fascinating to know...immensely creative, complicated and colorful. I enjoyed reading about her very much. However, the subject of her weight gain and loss is not nearly enough to carry this book. It might have been, if she herself had written the book, but reading about someone's else's weight issues from a sister's perspective is not, frankly, that interesting. I'm not saying that Amy Wilensky is not a skilled writer, for she certainly is, and I loved a lot of the little details included here, but I think she would have done better to write a general family memoir or a portrait of her sister overall.
I also found upon finishing the book that I didn't really completely get her perspective and feelings about her sister pinned down. The book starts with a scene on an airplane where her sister Alison is portroyed quite negatively, and scattered throughout the book are other scenes like this. Sometimes they seem to be out of the narrative flow and I am not sure why they are included in the way they are...they seem a little mean-spirited alongside the more balanced parts of her characterization of Alison. I think perhaps Amy's feelings are still a bit in flux about her sister, and this book may have been better written with the perspective of a few more years.
I would not discourage buying or reading this book, and in fact I am quite eager to read Amy's other book, Passing for Normal, but I would not buy it if you are mainly interesting in reading about weight issues or weight loss surgery.
I loved this book........2004-05-11
I am buying copies for all of my friends! The Weight of It is simply a beautifully written book that was difficult to put down. Wilensky examines herself, her family and her loving, imperfect relationship with her sister in a voice that is compelling, funny and fiercely smart. The author's exploration of her sibling relationship is flawed, complex and heartfelt, just as any balanced examination of a such a relationship must be. The story is peppered with poignant thoughts and facts about obesity, prejudice, gastric bypass surgery, sisterhood and identity. Throughout the book, Wilensky drives home an interesting, sad truth; obesity, like alcaholism, affects the entire family. After reading this book, I have more compassion for both the overweight and their families, and I know more about gastric bypass surgery as well. Any person who has struggled with his or her own weight, or who has pondered the causes and effects of obesity, will find this book fascinating.
just ok........2004-04-14
As a memoir, I got that Amy was writing about HER experience, and her own identity in relation to her sister. But somehow, I still needed to see more about her sister, Alison. I read the book jacket again after I finished the book, and ultimately I think it missed the mark: the jacket writes about the stranger that Alison became post-op, but its hardly what was covered in the book. Indeed, we learn very little about Alison at all, and Amy appears guarded in discussing the relationship, almost clinical in her description of their relationship. There are some strong moments, but very little tenderness, and a lot of the drama falls flat.

Book Description
This book contains the results of a three-year research programme by a joint team of experts from four different EU countries. The main focus of this research was on investigating the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for the disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment. The research work was focused on: the possibility of using abandoned underground mines for disposal of hazardous chemical waste with negligible pollution of the environment; the properties and behaviour of waste-isolating clay materials and practical ways of preparing and applying them; development of software tools to assess the stability, performance and risks associated with different repository concepts, considering the long-term safety of the biosphere; the isolating capacity of reference repositories; the different approaches for handling hazardous chemical waste. The project has demonstrated that hazardous waste can be safely disposed in underground mines provided that adequate assessment, planning and design procedures are employed. Information is also included on the selection of site location, design and construction of repositories, predicting degrees of contamination of groundwater in the surroundings, estimation of isolating capacity of reference repositories, cost estimation of this approach in comparison with some other approaches, and many other relevant issues. Invaluable to researchers and engineers working in the field of hazardous (chemical) waste disposal, this title will also significantly aid experts dealing with nuclear waste.
