                Description:
The reaction between sodium chlorate and sodium chloride in presence of aqueous sulfuric acid is studied in a well stirred reactor at various temperatures and molar concentrations of chlorate, chloride and acid. The reaction rate is evaluated by analyzing the consumption of chlorate or chloride iodometrically or argentometrically. The rate law is established. Reaction has been found first and second order with respect to chlorate and chloride concentration, respectively. Reaction order is found about 13-14 with respect to molar concentration of sulfuric acid but it reduced to 2.4 when acidity function, h_, is substituted in place of molar concentration. The temperature dependence of the reaction is also investigated and pre-exponential Arrhenius parameter as well as activation energy are determined. It has been observed that ClO"2/Cl"2 ratio is markedly affected by chlorate to chloride ratio. Reaction mechanism compatible with the reaction kinetics is proposed.

                  Description:
Rank annihilation factor analysis (RAFA) was used to the spectrophotometric studies of acid-base equilibria in the presence of @b-cyclodextrin (@b-CD). When the conditional acidity constants (@b-CD concentration dependent acidity constant) acts as an optimizing object, and simply combined with the pure spectrum of acidic and basic forms, the rank of original data matrix can be reduced. The residual standard deviation (R.S.D.) of the residual matrix after bilinearization of the background matrix is regarded as the valuation function. The performance of the method has been evaluated by using synthetic data. Spectrophotometric studies of neutral red, 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitrocatechol in the presence of varying amounts of @b-CD are used as experimental model systems and the amounts of conditional acidity constants and formation constants of the inclusion complexes of @b-CD with acidic and basic forms are calculated. The conditional acidity constants increased by increasing @b-CD concentration for all three investigated acids. The calculated stability constants show that 4-nitrophenolate, 4-nitrocatecholate anions and basic form of neutral red (neutral form) form more stable inclusion complexes with @b-CD than their acidic forms.

                                  Book Description

Ever since C.S. Forester's fictional hero Horatio Hornblower began to delight readers, there has been speculation that his adventures were based on the career of a real naval officer. Several names were suggested, but the general conclusion was that Hornblower was a composite character. In this thoroughly researched book the author argues convincingly that Forester's model was Adm. James Gordon, a flesh-and-blood hero of Nelson's navy. Gordon entered the Royal Navy as a semi-literate eleven-year-old and rose to become Admiral of the Fleet. He took part in major sea battles, frigate actions, single-ship duels, and operations far behind enemy lines. It was the fire of Gordon's ships against Fort McHenry that inspired the American national anthem. When he died, after more than seventy-five years of service in the navy, The Times called him "the last of Nelson's captains."

To support his claim, Bryan Perrett points to The Commodore and Hornblower's venture into the Baltic to harass the seaward flank of Napoleon's army during its retreat from Moscow as a remarkable parallel to Gordon's invasion up the Chesapeake in 1814 and his return down the Potomac with twenty-one prizes. He explains that Forester lived in the United States at the time he wrote The Commodore and fearful of offending his American readers, studiously obscured the identity of the real Hornblower.

In telling the largely unknown story of Admiral Gordon's active service career, the book will be appreciated not only by the thousands of readers who have enjoyed the adventures of Hornblower, but also by those interested in the naval warfare of the Napoleonic period. Readers who enjoy biography will find that they have the added bonus of an absorbing literary and historical detective story.

                                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Moderately interesting, particularly for Hornblower fans.......2002-02-02

This was a moderately interesting real-life account of a British sea captain contemporaneous with the Hornblower books. As such, it makes for an interesting comparison between fact and fiction, and, as the author says, sometimes the former is even more extraordinary than the latter.

The author doesn't fully prove his case that Hornblower was based on Gordon, though there are some striking parallels. The most notable one is that Gordon came up the Chesapeake as a commodore with a small fleet very similar to the one that Hornblower led into the Baltic. (What the author finds suspicious is that Forester wrote a naval history of this period that glosses over this incident, perhaps due to the similarities with Hornblower.) The author uses footnotes and an introduction to point out other points of commonality.

As I said, moderately interesting, particularly to a Hornblower reader, but not particularly a page-turner.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Supplement to Horatio Hornblower Series.......2000-04-07

"The Real Hornblower" is a surprisingly in-depth book following and examining the life of Admiral Sir James Gordon. Perrett has obviously researched Gordon under a microscope, as there is very few sections of his life that are not covered. The book begins with a short examination of C. S. Forester, and his creation of Horatio Hornblower, and then delves into Gordon's life, through newpaper articals, personal letters, ship logs, and Gordon's own unpublished auto-biography. In addition to following Gordon, Perrett gives a very acurate historical account of the wars and politics (which revolve around the European and American naval fleets) during the time that Gordon was alive, make this an excellent naval history or reference book as well. For anyone who has read C. S. Forester's series on Horatio Hornblower, this book is an excellent supplement, allowing you to see a different side of 'Hornblower' in Admiral Sir James Gordon.

Enjoyed reading my friend John's (and fellow writer),book on his African Experiences.

His wife Adeline did a great job too.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable story of medical experiences in East Africa........1999-08-21

Dr. Hult has written a truly remarkable story of life as a missionary pediatrician in East Africa. His writing is at all times clear and concise. He brings to life an era in this former British colony then called Tanganyika. For those of us who were there, and who recall the people and places he writes about, it's a nostalgic trip into the past. But for those who weren't there, this book paints pictures that portray humor and pathos, successes and failures, adventure and routine, life and death in a primitive African culture. A must-read for everyone interest in missions, African culture, or just the people themselves.

                                      Book Description

This new encyclopedia of the life of the great explorer Captain Cook is both a meticulous piece of scholarship and an attractive and accessible reference book for the general reader. Cook - the great sailor, surveyor, cartographer and explorer - has had much written about him but, inevitably, many of the published works explore only aspects of his career; in The Captain Cook Encyclopedia the author - with the help of some twenty distinguished scholars and writers - sets out to answer any question about Cook likely to be raised in the study of his life and career. The work is arranged alphabetically and the essay length of each entry gives a proper context to the people, voyages, events, places and ships important in his life, and allows the author to deal in depth with the latest findings. The work is fully cross-referenced and each entry is followed by a suggested reading list for those wanting to pursue a topic further. There are appendices, a full bibliography and a chronology of Cook's life and times. An introductory essay on Cook's life, from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire to his violent death in Kealakekua Bay at the age of fifty, puts his achievements in context and deals with the latest findings and controversies, and the whole book is rounded off with a careful selection of illustrations and maps. Not only an unrivalled companion to every aspect of his career, The Captain Cook Encyclopedia is also an ideal introduction to that great century of exploration when Cook, more than any other, delineated the world as we know it today.

                                            Book Description

OECD's annual survey of Australia's economy. This issue's special features cover corporate governance and entrepreneurship in Australia. The survey finds that the medium-term growth record is very good but that the pace of job creation has slackened since 1995. The absence of strong inflationary pressures has contributed to the steady recovery. Monetary policy has shifted from a restrictive to a moderately expansionary stance. Fiscal consolidation has been maintained. Despite a lower-than-forecast deficit in fiscal year 96/97, fiscal repair efforts must be sustained. Stronger growth and lower employment are in prospect but developments in Asia pose a risk. Further reform was made to industrial relations and unfair dismissal legislation, but concerns remain about the effect of the award system on labor market flexibility. Reforms to strengthen apprenticeship are being made and radical change in labor market assistance is being put into place. Implementation of the Hilmer reforms on competition policy is progressing well, but demands for a slowdown in other reforms should be resisted. Some progress has also been made in addressing expenditure pressures in health care. Planned reforms to the financial system should enhance efficiency and tax reform should be pursued. Laws on corporate governance are being reexamined. A "business judgement" rule is needed and regulatory barriers to institutional shareholder activism should be removed, as should unuseful impediments to take-overs. But the case for some other reforms is mixed. Continued market-oriented reform will enhance entrepreneurship.
