Book Description
Healing the Downsized Organization is for managers and employees who must make sense of dramatically changed workplaces after reengineering, restructuring, or downsizing. Here are "best practices" from those who are successfully reinventing their organizations and re-creating healthy workplaces. Documented examples from executives, managers, and employees who have bounced back from this challenge reveal how they minimized pain during downsizing and discovered promising possibilities for changed employer-employee relationships.
Dramatic profiles of four organizations--representing manufacturing, media journalism, education, and health care--provide lessons you can practice today, whether downsizing is unfolding now or whether it looms in the future. From interviews with CEOs, managers, and employees, you will understand how individuals at all levels have handled the tension between personal and organizational goals, managed the human struggles, and achieved victories as they cut costs and redeployed resources to face competition or changing market conditions.
You will learn how these companies and individuals coped with downsizing, including:
¸ how "survivors" regained momentum, focus, and job satisfaction after downsizing
¸ what kinds of company-employee interactions allowed trust to be rebuilt
¸ how managers succeeded in balancing the concerns of those who left and those who stayed
¸ ways to be an effective leader in the transitional period
¸ approaches to forge a new employer-employee social contract for the emerging workplace
Healing the Downsized Organization is the recovery book for the downsizing of America.

Book Description
The debate over genetic manipulation and its use in plant improvement and protection has led to an increased demand for developing methods for detecting and characterizing genetic manipulation in plants and plant products such as seeds and foods. This book is unique in presenting all relevant methods together in one volume: those for using and determining markers retained in genetically manipulated products as well as methods for eliminating marker genes and procedures for characterizing chromosomal aberrations in genetically manipulated plants.

Book Description
This year the Huntington celebrates the centennial of its spectacular desert garden, one of the largest such collections of cacti and other succulents in the world. Visitors to the twelve-acre garden marvel at its more than 3,000 species, including the vivid blue and green Puya, a rare type of bromeliad; the Lithops, or "living stone," whose camouflaged leaves mimic the shape and color of rocks; and the dazzling red, orange, and yellow torch-like blooms of the winter-flowering aloe.
In this beautifully illustrated volume, Lyons draws on decades of experience with these unusual specimens to explore the Huntington's desert garden. He tells of its early development, describes its principal collections, and gives instructions on the care and landscaping of desert gardens.

Ship of fools ...

Jessica Wakefield is running out of patience. She's desperate to find the dashing stranger who saved her life, but he refuses to come forward. Is he just shy -- or does he have something to hide?
Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth catches Tom with The Bride!!!.......2005-03-28
Elizabeth catches Tom with Nicole,Jason Pierson's bride when she didn't want to have it with him. Isabella and I think Danny caught Tom and Nicole together,Winston and Denise are marooned. Nina is after the ship's doctor, and Elizabeth wants Tom out of her life. Tom doesn't get out of Elizabeth's life untill Dana Upshaw, and Jessica wants to meet the mystery man who saved her life when she fell overboard[kind of like Ellen Riteman in The Unicorn Club"Bon Voyage Unicorns" ] It's someone she's known since 6th grade.
okay.......2001-07-01
This book could be on the edge but you knew Jess is probably never gonna find her mystery man. And you knew she was gonna get caught, same with the ring thing, also it is a little boring in some parts like why would nicole want tom to kiss her again, liz is going after todd, but you also know that shes gonna get back with tom, but I don't want to spoil it so read it
sorry, but this book was great.......2000-09-05
this book was really sad funny and great all at the same time! it was NOT boring it's book 2 in a trilogy, so if you get this one, also get #12: college cruise and #14: shipboard wedding!
One of my favourite SVU trilogies..........2000-04-06
I found the beginning of the 'Cruise' trilogy absolutely hilarious. I couldn't believe what Tom did. It does seem a little strange that he would just go for another girl, especially since he is supposed to be so in "love" with Liz. Nina and Bryan are particularly irritating in this series, it annoys me that Bryan is portrayed as this control freak. Anyway, Danny and Isabella are having problems, especially since Isabella insists on sticking up for Tom Watts (guess she still hasn't gotten over her crush on him). Personally, I'd like to see Isabella and Tom get together, they'd make such a cute couple. Also, Elizabeth's tendency to be 'perfect' can get a tad annoying, I wish she would just relax and take it easy. I don't know why she's going for Todd, he's a complete loser, and not to mention the fact that he dumped Liz at the beginning of college for the same reason that Liz is annoyed at Tom. Hint: Bedroom. ;-)
PRETTY BORING.......1999-04-03
This book is just about the most boring book I've ever read in the series. Tom kisses Nicole in a moment of insecurity (a really dumb reason) Elizabeth sees this and instantly falls into the arms of her ex-boyfriend Todd Wilkens (should have done that sooner since now he's getting involved with a sports/tomboy freak) Tom is now banging Elizabeth's door down for what reason I have no clue; Elizabeth is definatly the worst do-gooder ever. She's busy caring for her sister Jessica, for what reason I don't know. Jessica is always getting herself into scrapes and Liz is ALWAYS pulling her out of them. She is always abandoning Tom for that snob (if you've read Billie's Secret, you'll know what I'm talking about) Danny is being a jerk. All those ethics classes are making him paranoid, stupid and just downright insane. Actually stealing a ring just so Jason and Nicole can't get married? Why can't he just tell Jason to his face that Nicole has been cheating on him with Tom. On top of that he gets Jessica into trouble because the captain thinks that she stole the ring while she was rooting through everyones' cabins (Being Jessica she was looking through the cabins for a very dumb reason:she was trying to find her true love! This girl was almost raped and she stiils wants another boyfriend? Well, he did save her life) Well, that just about sums the book up right.

Book Description
This insightful analysis of the ways in which South Korean economic development strategies have reshaped the country's national identity gives specific attention to the manner in which women, as the primary agents of consumption, have been affected by this transformation. Past scholarship on the culture of nationalism has largely focused on the ways in which institutions utilize memory and "history" to construct national identity. In a provocative departure, Laura C. Nelson challenges these assumptions with regard to South Korea, arguing that its identity has been as much tied to notions of the future as rooted in a recollection of the past.
Following a backlash against consumerism in the late 1980s, the government spearheaded a program of frugality that eschewed imported goods and foreign travel in order to strengthen South Korea's national identity. Consumption -- with its focus on immediate gratification -- threatened the state's future-oriented discourse of national unity. In response to this perceived danger, Nelson asserts, the government cast women as the group whose "excessive desires" for material goods were endangering the nation.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking study of consumerism.......2005-05-14
This very entertaining illuminated a developing country's discovery of consumerism. I enjoyed not ony the insight into Korean life, but the way the book put this bahavior in a broader context.
Fresh and Intelligent.......2001-03-13
Ms. Nelson's keen eye and sensitive writing create a vivid picture of how tensions among tradition, nationalism, rapid economic development and the globalization of markets play out in the everyday life of Koreans. Her book got me thinking in new ways about shopping and the collective unconscious, both in Korea and in my own culture. I came away with a better understanding not only of Korea, but also of how anthropology is done (at least by one talented anthropologist) in a postmodern world.
A lot of interesting information here........2001-02-07
This is one of a spate of new books looking at Gender and Consumption in the new middle classes developing around the world. In general, I much prefer Mills' "Thai Women in the Global Labor Force" or Wolf's "Factory Daughters" to this one. Those two books have an explicit focus on gender and aknowledge the contentious nature of household decisions on spending money. The case of the Korean middle classes during the "miracle economy" of the 1970s and 1980s has a lot of intrinsic interest, and there is a lot of information here to think about. But too much of the information is summary statistics on whole segments of the population, or relatively fragmented stories and anecdotes drawn from personal encounters and interviews. It gets very hard to connect these two levels.
Rudi Colloredo-Mansfield's book "The Native Leisure Class" about highland south America does a better job of linking intimate details of daily life with 'big picture' ideas about consumer culture and development in general. It is a very tough assignment.
Nelson has a great topic. She writes well, and clearly knows Seoul extremely well. But this is not the great book on the consumer culture of a developing country that we have been waiting for.

Book Description
From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain is an account of the making of the American landscape following European settlement. It starts with "virgin" forests and grasslands of the central and northeastern United States, and successively documents the clearance and fragmentation of the region's woodlands, the harvest of the forest and its game, the plowing of prairies and the draining of wetlands. The Native American, the trapper, the farmer and the lumberman all benefited from the land and its resources; the degree to which their activities altered the soil, the climate, the natural plant and animal communities, and the water cycle is examined here.
Customer Reviews:
A singularly comprehensive ecologcial history of this region.......2006-07-14
Many have written about the region's history, some have connected its ecology to the invasion of colonists and subsequent events familiar from grade school studies of the origins and development of our nation. This book give context and meaning to both. Along the way, it roots our present conservation challenges in a firmer substrate, and contributes to our understanding of this place with a solid foundation in a philosophy of interdependence with the natural world in a time when that notion is all too uncommon. I recommend it. My only gripes: its overwrought exposition on ecological histories is a bore and it is painfilly overpriced which will limit the readership of what is otherwise an important book.

Book Description
Economics, Dominique reminds us, is a social science, with prescriptions that are statistical in character but inherently polemical. In contrast to the laws of the natural sciences, economic statements, meaningful as well as meaningless, can be transformed into a vehicle for the promotion of "false consciousness," as when the polemical prescriptions of social sciences are used to promote unavowed interests. The axiomatization of economics in the early 1950s, though well-intended, has produced two negative consequences: the equation of science and mathematical formalism by some, and a total lack of concern for experimentation on the part of others. These translate into excessive abstraction, empirical irrelevance, and a total lack of social purpose. Dominique argues that excessive abstraction is causing economics to gradually lose its social usefulness. This state of affairs has, in turn, led the general public to accept at face value the prescriptions of an untested orthodoxy, such as "unfettered globalization," as genuinely scientific. In the era of unfettered globalization, the top 20 percent of the world's income earners have become richer while the bottom 80 percent have become impoverished and environmental degradation has gone unabated. Dominique argues that, according to the scientific theory of economics, the top quintile must pay the costs and the bottom four quintiles ought not bear alone the brunt of globalization. To reverse this outcome, the bottom 80 percent must become pro-active in economic policy formulation. A challenge to contemporary development and economic policy that will be of interest to economists, public policy makers, the international business community, and social activists.

Customer Reviews:
good pictures, not much information.......2007-06-23
Someone else described this as a "coffee table" book. that is exactly right. the pictures are nice, but there is not much information in it. If you are looking for a book about sedona to help you know what to do there or how to get around or just good basic information - you won't find it here. and it's too big to take it with you on vacation.
Great book about Sedona.......2007-04-12
I have bought several books on Sedona in the past and this is by far the best. The pictures are large and vibrant and the descriptions and information are accurate. The book covers formations, wildlife, flora and fauna, cultural history, etc.
I am taking my third trip out to Sedona this month and this book gave me new insight to some places to go and the history that lies within Sedona. This is a great book and it is always on my coffee table for all to see the beauty of Sedona.
Spectacular Sedona.......2007-01-17
This is a wonderful snapshot of the Sedona area! Just leafing through it brings back many memeories of being in the area. Wonderful photos and great information. At an unbelievable price! A wonderful gift at not much more than the price of a card!
Absolutely Gorgeous.......2004-11-24
This book is a great "coffee table book." It's a nice gift to someone who has been to Sedona and misses it, as well it gives the pre-visitor to Sedona a decent idea of what to expect from Sedona visually. I only say "decent" because, well, Sedona is THAT beautiful. The book is done superbly and effeciently.
While my husband and I honeymooned in Sedona for 5 days in October, the weather changed dramatically from sunny, windy, rainy, dry, wet, humid, crisp and refreshing and back to sunny again. Nothing was ever ugly, or less than jaw-dropping, about it. Additionally, it is simply an interesting place to be because constantly, all day long, Sedona offers 360 degree views of something curious to look at. Even the buildings, shops, architecture, private homes are all somehow tickling to the senses. What keeps you focused is where the mountains are placed. It helps you to remember you're feet are still on earth.
This book, purchased while in Sedona, we felt was a good summary of that feeling. We hope you like it. ~~ Mr. & Mrs. G.
One of America's great natural wonders........2003-04-19
Sedona is one of those places on earth that when you visit, you are touched by its ever changing beauty forever. This lovely offering is filled with spectacular photographs and natural history, recreation and historical information. Having visited Sedona many times, this book truly captures the essence of this unique piece of landscape that attracts so many people for its beauty, its mystical power and its outdoor activities. Northland Publishing has produced a "coffee table type book" without the often lofty investment expense. If you have ever made a pilgrimage to Sedona or long to visit, this is the book that you must have in your home library. Truly, a beautiful book.
