        4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction.......2005-01-25

        Pros:
        1. Rephrases of theorems in more understandable words other than just mathematical terms.
        2. Use of analogy is particularly helpful.
        3. Very readable proofs -- just about the right amount of details.

        Cons:
        1. Too many trivial examples in the first chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Soft and pleasing intro to the (mathematical) coding theory.......2004-09-22

A very soft introduction to coding theory. All the necessary information in finite field theory etc. are reminded of and short proves are also included. It is 25 years ago that I studied mathematics and it still was easy to follow. If you start from scratch you obviously have to invest some time to get a grasp of the mathematics before you can understand the application to coding.

After having read this book I finally know what this error messages of "Failed 312 cyclic redundancy checks" actually mean and why cyclic codes are used in physical networks (good burst correction properties).

If you want to dig deeper in the subject and you want to learn about nonlinear codes and more: than the authors tend to reference Neil J. A. Sloane, Florence Jessie MacWilliams "The Theory of Error-Correcting Codes".

Prompt delivery, book was in great shape. I'd buy my next textbook this way!

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Coding Theory.......2000-03-27

The greatest quality of this book is that all the author expects the reader to have is a basic mathematics background (a Discrete Structures background of basic Set Theory). It contains consise explanations and straightforward proofs to all the essential theorems of the subject, but, fortunately, is NOT too elementary that it loses its true mathematical appeal. To top it all, it is chock-full of excellent applied problems in communications, image transmission, and even a party trick here or there (oh yes, friends WILL be impressed when you can error-correct an ISBN!).
In short, I think this book serves as a wonderful textbook into introductory Coding theory. And as for the subject of Coding Theory in general, maybe to spark a bit more interest in some potential customers, a thorough study of the theory will bring together all types of Mathematics (from algebra, calculus, number theory, set theory, finite geometry, and linear algebra).
        All will be revealed!

              Book Description

PASCOS is an interdisciplinary symposium on the interface of of Particle physics, String theory and Cosmology. Over the past two decades these three disciplines have increasingly become closer. Historically there was always a strong overlap between particle physics and cosmology. This connection has become even stronger with the realization that some of the fundamental issues in cosmology such as the presence of dark matter and dark energy may possibly find a resolution only via new theories of particle physics. At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.

Culture and Positioning as a Determinant of Strategy: Personlity and the Business Organization by Tony Ellson (Palgrave Macmillan) This book offers an alternative to the traditional process of segmentation, targeting and positioning, highlighting some important implications for management and marketing practitioners as well as academics. Strategic positioning is the assertion of an organization's personality on decisions of how and where to compete. Operational positioning is an exercise in communication that concentrates on perception and image.
The book suggests that the principal drivers of strategic positioning play a fundamental role in the determination of strategy at all levels and play a pivotal role in differentiating competitors and generating competitive advantage. In particular, strategic positioning requires awareness and sometimes adjustment and changes in an organization's culture rather than just the cosmetic approach sometimes sought through promotion, advertising and communications plans.
Strategic positioning is distinctive from operational positioning and that strategic positioning is sustained by the genuine capabilities and competencies of a business rather than perceptions and images promoted by communication techniques employed by advertising and promotion. There is a clear implication that the source or driver of strategic positioning is the culture or 'personality' of the business as determined by the history of the company and the personal preferences of the owners or senior managers.
If strategic positioning is the outcome of these factors, then the methods of segmentation, the choice of target segment, and customer perceptions are also likely to be influenced by them. The expression of culture, history, and preferences is likely to be displayed by the behaviours of the business in a similar way to the traits of humans that in sum total lend themselves to the establishment of a metaphorical personality. If organizations have a personality that amounts to a strategic positioning in the minds of customers, then it is an important feature that will be reflected in corporate strategy and indeed, the determination of marketing strategy and all other functional areas across the value chain. A diminution of relevant and meaningful competencies and capabilities to match profitable and growing market segments is likely to have a major and significant effect upon the future success of a business. It suggests that organizations risk becoming stuck in an ever-decreasing circle dictated by their own paradigmatic view of the world, their industry, and their customers. This would mean that effective strategic positioning requires an awareness, as well as recognition, of the need to make adjustment or change to the organization's culture as part of the marketing strategy. This is an important and difficult task for all managers in a business organization that seeks growth and durable success.

                    Book Description

When Hazel Wolf died, at the age of 101, more than nine hundred of her friends--from the governor of Washington to union organizers, from birdwatchers to hunters--crowded Town Hall in Seattle to honor the feisty activist and tell the often outrageous "Hazel" stories that were their common currency. In this book, Hazel herself tells the stories. From twenty years of taped conversations, Susan Starbuck has fashioned both a biography and a historical document, the tale of a century's forces and events as played out in one woman's extraordinary life.

Hazel Wolf earned a national reputation as an environmentalist and was awarded the National Audubon Society's Medal of Excellence, an honor she shared with Rachel Carson and Jimmy Carter. She laid the groundwork for a unique coalition of Native Americans and environmentalists who are now working together on issues related to nuclear energy, fisheries, and oil pipelines. She lectured and taught at schools and universities all over the United States. She lobbied Congress to maintain the national parks, and she corresponded with global leaders. But for all her influence, she never held a political post higher than precinct committee officer in Seattle's 43rd legislative district, and her highest office in the environmental movement was that of secretary in the Seattle Audubon Society, where she served for thirty-five years.

This book follows Hazel Wolf from childhood to old age, a lifetime of burning with a fierce desire for justice. She saw the quest for justice as a collective responsibility. Time and again, she met that challenge head on. Whether organizing for labor rights or founding chapters of the Audubon Society, battling to save old-growth forests or fighting deportation to her native Canada as a Communist, over and over she put herself in the line of fire. "I was just there," she said, "powerless and strong, someone who wouldn't chicken out."

"Here is a blueprint for activism, not for the power-hungry but for the dedicated. Starbuck's role is understated, but this historian has artfully crafted the material. Hazel is clearly something special and, happily, this book about her is, too."--Karen J. Blair, Central Washington University

In Hazel Wolf's own words: "Most people are just trying to improve things. You do what you can do. I ended up being Hazel Wolf."

"I can organize things I don't even know anything about. I can get people going."

"We can plan destruction or we can plan the other way. That's our challenge."

"This universe, where one thing eats another--I think that it's savage and I've thought that for a long time."

"How can I worship a Creator that I feel is morally inferior to me? If I couldn't figure out a better universe than the one we've got, I would just quit my job and go on unemployment. When I meet Him, eyeball to eyeball, before He consigns me to the nether regions, I'll tell Him just what I think of Him."

"I was born in 1898. I'm going to live till the year 2000, so I can have been in three centuries. Then I'm going."

Hazel Wolf really understood how to organize and shares her knowledge with the reader. But don't be fooled by the practical nature of that remark: Hazel Wolf was also a great character and funny. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read about a woman with an amazing (and very long)life who knew how to get things done, how to grow and move with the times, and never lacked the self confidence to go for what she wanted.

5 out of 5 stars An accurate and interesting book about a true hero.......2003-03-26

Hazel Wolf was a friend of mine and fellow board member on the Seattle Audubon Society for nearly 25 years. Susan Starbuck's book about Hazel is both highly entertaining and a very personal view of this unique woman. Susan has done a masterful job of weaving together a myriad of stories from and about Hazel into a coherent guide to Hazel's life as a dedicated organizer of social movements from her early life through her death at 101. Hazel never saw a wrong that she felt could not be righted. She dedicated her life to achieving justice, whether it was for working men and women, for jail inmates, for racial justice, for the environment or against war, often at the expense of her own personal and family life. Hazel led the way for women's independence and liberation through hard work and example without ever thinking about the meaning of those terms. At a recent celebration of Hazel's 105th birthday, Congressman Jim McDermitt and Governor Mike Lowry both said that in these times of Bush's war, we need Hazel's example of leadership more than ever.

5 out of 5 stars Hazel Wolf- A persistent power for the right things in life.......2003-01-31

A powerful woman! If you think you have energy, read what this woman did right up to the end of her 101 years.

5 out of 5 stars Activist Wanted to Have Fun.......2003-01-19

Hazel Wolf could have been your grandmother. A real tomboy, she grew up with her toes in the sand of Pacific Northwest beaches and her fingers around a basketball. The working class kids of Victoria B.C. were her "gang," and the comradeship and fun they cooked up animated her whole life.

Later, working as a secretary in Depression-era Seattle, Wolf organized fledgling unions wherever the bosses assigned her. They'd fire her for organizing, re-assign her to a new job, and she would begin organizing again. Like she always did, Hazel was just making friends and having fun.

In one of the "Hazel Stories" that fill the book, sheriff's deputies tried to evict a down-and-out family from their home by carrying the furniture out onto the sidewalk. Hazel and her friends, who sometimes cared to call themselves socialists or communists, simply carried the chairs and tables back into the house through the back door. The sheriff eventually gave up.

The U.S. government tried to deport Hazel Wolf during the McCarthy period because she was a) a communist, and b)Canadian. Just like the sheriff, the feds failed, too. Hazel had thousands of friends, and she wasn't afraid of political pressure. As she said, "I was just there, powerless and strong, someone who wouldn't chicken out. Somebody always stops the nonsense all through history."

Author Susan Starbuck says Hazel Wolf knew her life would make an important story; that it might evoke the next generation of social and environmental activists. At bookstore readings, Starbuck tells prospective readers, "Hey folks, here's an owner's manual about what to do when your government runs amok." The message of "Hazel Wolf: Fighting the Establishment" is theat we, too could have fun being activists...and also change the world.

                    5 out of 5 stars Skillfully Done........2002-11-24

I have just completed reading Hazel Wolf's biography by Susan Starbuck, which was published by the University of Washington Press. Ms. Starbuck has skillfully knit together the words of Ms. Wolf, based on years of interviews with her, with her own author's narrative. Because Ms. Wolf's life was so dramatic and has been so vividly presented by the author, the book is interesting and preserves an important part of Northwest political history.

Paul Monette first made a name for himself in 1978 with his debut novel, Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll, a comic romp with serious overtones. He established himself as a writer of popular fiction with three more novels before he and his lover were both diagnosed with HIV. In 1988 he wrote On Borrowed Time, a memoir of living with AIDS and of his lover's death. The passion and anger that fueled On Borrowed Time surfaces again in 1992's Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story, his National Book Award-winning autobiography. Although it follows the traditional structure of the autobiography and bildungsroman--early family life, education, reflections on how art influenced the subject's view of life--Becoming a Man also filters Monette's story through two central facts: the closet and AIDS. Monette writes of the pain of being closeted, the effect it had on his writing, and how it shaped (and often destroyed) his relationships. Monette's fear and fury at AIDS and homophobia heighten the same skill and imagination he put into his fiction. This vision--poetic yet highly political, angry yet infused with the love of life--is what transforms Becoming a Man from simple autobiography into an intense record of struggle and salvation. Paul Monette did not lead a life different from many gay men--he struggled courageously with his family, his sexuality, his AIDS diagnosis--but in bearing witness to his and others' pain, he creates a personal testimony that illuminates the darkest corners of our culture even as it finds unexpected reserves of hope.

                    Book Description

A child of the 1950s from a small New England town, "perfect Paul" earns straight A's and shines in social and literary pursuits, all the while keeping a secret -- from himself and the rest of the world. Struggling to be, or at least to imitate, a straight man, through Ivy League halls of privilege and bohemian travels abroad, loveless intimacy and unrequited passion, Paul Monette was haunted, and finally saved, by a dream of "the thing I'd never even seen: two men in love and laughing."

Searingly honest, witty, and humane, Becoming a Man is the definitive coming-out story in the classic coming-of-age genre.

                    5 out of 5 stars A most moving account.......2007-09-09

A frank, honest and very moving memoir, it is beautifully written (which makes the odd grammatical error all the more perplexing) with prose which flow almost seamlessly. The writer describes a varied and colourful life searching for Mr Right, and while he eventually finds fulfilment and happiness, the ultimate conclusion is nothing short of tear inducing. A most captivating read.

5 out of 5 stars Angry, thoughtful, disheartening, and triumphant.......2006-12-28

The tone of this book is sometimes so overwhelmingly negative and self-deprecating that, if you don't know at least a little about the author, it would certainly overshadow the meaning and ultimate victory of this journey, chronicled here with such amazing detail as to transport a reader, almost, deep inside Paul Monette's head.

If you're reading the book, or would like to do so, know that Mr. Monette does find love, more than once, and that he finds his journey to have been both extraordinary and extraordinarily painful, I believe. Sadly, he is gone now.

Also keep in mind that Mr. Monette lived long before Will & Grace and Latter Days and anything that would counter his impression that the world was out to uncover his homosexuality and that it wasn't the greatest sin/evil that he could have imagined.

In another place and time, I see many parts of myself and my journey in his, although likely drastically less dramatic and with far fewer prep schools involved. (Like none.) His journey provides insight and detail that can assure countless masses that they are not alone and are not unworthy to find happiness and love despite not filling the traditional recipe for heterosexual roles.

SO READ THIS BOOK, and feel his pain. Relish his rich experiences, his amazing writing ability, feel his loss, and relish his ultimate victory, if not victory over AIDS, then the victory of finding love. Not easy reading, but highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Taps into the rage many of us felt growing up gay.......2005-12-12

I give this book 5 stars because of the intimate way in which I related to the story told here. I am not sure if a non-gay person would enjoy this quite as much, although I'm sure they would find it a worthwhile read. An important read, really, for straight and gay alike, because it explains by example how many of us felt violated and suppressed growing up in a society that had little tolerance for homosexuality. True, things have changed now, (though not enough), but this book details the state of growing up gay in 20th century America, and all that it entailed, written lavishly and flowingly.

4 out of 5 stars Not incredibly written, but profoundly important.......2005-11-02

As a twenty year old heterosexual male I found this book to very insightful. Monette illuminates both the sturglles and the shame of the homosexual community. I understood that it was hard to be gay, but this book has really helped to show me that this strife comes not from any inherent feeling attached to homosexuality but is a result instead of the prejudice and hate of the public, many of whom are supposed closet cases. I think that eventually America's continuing and blatant homophobia will be seen in the same light that we now view the cross burning and racial pogroms that dominated our contry for centuries. I wish you all strength and courage in your battle against these evil forces. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Important text in gay literature.......2005-06-30

Becoming a Man is the National Book Award winning memoir by Paul Monette, and was a landmark text in the literature associated with HIV. This book was, in many ways, the "little book that could," beating out such non-fiction heavyweights as David McCullough for the NBA.

Monette is a fascinating character - shortly after reading this memoir, I saw the documentary about Monette's life. I have always enjoyed his novels...Taking Care of Mrs Carroll, The Longshot, and Halfway Home. This memoir is not only brilliantly written, it is well-suffused with the authors thoughts about being gay, suffering with HIV, and the experience of being "other."

When Monette passed away, literature lost a bright light.
