Yes, families CAN travel !!.......2002-02-08
While living in Asia, we've made an effort to travel out of country every three months for well needed 'environmental relief'.
At first we limited our travels to places such as Hong Kong & Thailand. Nothing too spectacular from memory.
Then, after that first year, I was handed a copy of 'The Family Travel Guide' by an American friend. I didn't think I'd get much out of it...
WELL, that book hasn't left the coffee table since. It's been used primarily for 'inspiration' over the years, but the contact details have also proven most useful.
WE TRAVELLED TO ROME AND ROVANEMI (FINLAND)ON THE STRENGTH OF THAT BOOK - AND FOR THIS I WISH TO THANK THE EDITOR!
My children will never forget the time they met Santa (last Easter) or the Pope waiving from his window in the Vatican City (six months prior).
To add to this, they've now been priviledged enough to visit the likes of Scotland, Turkey, Nepal, China and several other nations in SE Asia.
This book taught me that 'kids clubs' are not the "be all - end all".
More parents, if they're fortunate enough to have the funds to travel with their tribe, should curl up on the couch with 'The Family Travel Guide'. It's been a God's send to us!

Store Wars: The Battle for Mindspace and Shelfspace

Book Description
Store Wars The battle for mindspace and shelfspace Judith Corstjens, Arrow Consultancy, Bois-le-Rois, France and Marcel Corstjens, Professor of Marketing Insead, Fontainebleau, France Fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) marketing has become a struggle between manufacturers and retailers for control of Mindspace and Shelfspace. Partnership is seen as an Indian wrestling match between manufacturers and retailers: co-operation can only be gained from a position of strength. Marketing for FMCG manufacturers now involves understanding retailers, their business and marketing strategies, their strengths and their limitations. The major aim of modern marketing is to affect the balance of power between retailers and their suppliers. Store Wars sets out to equip the reader to thrive in this climate. "Advertising agencies are in a unique and sensitive position as mercenaries in the battle between manufacturers and retailers. They work for both sides. This book provides, with its concept of mindspace and shelfspace, a profound and contemporary insight into the anatomy of branding on both sides of the divide." Martin Boase, Chairman, Omicom UK plc "The battle for mindspace and shelfspace provides a practical framework within which FMCG managers will need to test, adjust or even fundamentally change their strategic address. It describes the new reality." Dominic Cadbury, Executive Chairman, Cadbury Schweppes plc "Marcel and Judy have brought to bear their intellectual prowess and institutional knowledge to provide an enlightening view of issues in modern retailing. A book full of thought-provoking ideas for academics and practitioners alike." Rajiv Lal, Professor of Marketing, Stanford UniversityCustomer Reviews:

Keep this a secret........2003-01-04
Buy a copy and keep it a secret - you will appear to have mastered the major strategic issues in grocery, this book is that good.
The issues are examined in a balanced way and the conclusions are well drawn. Be warned, it takes time to read as every three or four pages gave me so many ideas that I would put it down and write a paper inside my business from the ideas and options the book had generated.
Well worth the cost, but keep this between just us.

Never disappointed by a Janice VanCleave book.......2006-03-21
A little interest boost for elementary school biology.......1999-04-10
Projects and activities to teach concepts, terminology, and (according to the author, Janice VanCleave) laboratory methods. This book and the others in the series each describe 101 experiments. For biology they are classified under plants, animals, and humans. Each is presented in a two-page spread with an illustration on the right. The order is logical. By working through the book doing some experiments and reading about the others, one would form significant concepts. An explanation is given for each activity. Growing carrots from carrot tops demonstrates that a plant can grow if it has portions of base, stem, and root, and if it receives food and water.
The explanations are oversimplified in some cases (for "finger monocle" for example). Younger students need simpler explanations, but I believe the scientific principles could be stated more accurately. Also, some of the illustrations could be improved, but basically the book is good.
For a total science program I would recommend a textbook or a number of broad topic books. Individual experiments miss some of the overall themes and some concepts are hard to demonstrate.
I have not seen evolutionary concepts in the book. It and others in the series seem best for about grades 3 through 5. Younger kids could profit from most of the activities. The explanations don't bring out the scientific principles clearly enough for older ones.
Part of a series from John Wiley & Sons.
