            Book Description

The book discusses the preliminary results of the COBE satellite (Cosmic Background Explorer). First, the three instruments on board COBE: FIRAS (Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer), DMR (Differential Microwave Radiometer), DIRBE (Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment), and the data acquisition and reduction techniques, are described by members of the COBE Science Team. Most of the subsequent material is devoted to the cosmological implications of the observations. The topics covered are: the Early universe: Planck era, inflation, dark matter, relic particles, etc. large and small scale anisotropies of the CMB large-scale structures and galaxy formation infrared to submillimetre background dust in galaxies and quasars instrumentation and observation techniques Scientists of different communities, from particle physics to observational astrophysics, have been enabled to share their convictions and their doubts about the `excess of perfection' of the relic Cosmic Radiation. Only such opportunities will allow us to make progress in the understanding of our Universe.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars True Modern Fey.......2003-05-11

This is a poignant, often sad fantasy about the life of a girl who considers herself a failure, leading a fairly miserable life even with her skills and a decent job. It truly lives up to its moniker of fairy tale, for it is as all good lore: Gritty, supernatural, with a few morals to impart and a decidedly imperfect ending.

It begins by introducing the characters, the young woman Jo, her drugged-up mother, her domineering cop father, her coworkers at the shop. She is an ace at fixing cars, but very depressed because of her family life and nonexistant social life. Staying late one night, she decides to build a humanoid out of spare parts, simply as a lark; but when lightning hits it, it comes to life. After understandable fright, she takes it home and installs it in a room on the roof of her tenament, and starts trying to teach it language and knowledge. He eventually picks up a name from the neighbor, who loves to play as King Arthur: Galahad. Jo slowly makes progress on teaching him, with the help of a spell-n-speak to give him voice, through flash cards and later many books from the library, particularly about astronomy.

At the same time she's trying to find her way around a social life with a few other young women, visiting clubs and going on double-dates. Each seems to become one disappointment and disaster after another; even an enjoyable and relaxed evening with a local magnate that leads to a night of passion, is a misunderstanding. Here and there, however, her very imperfect friends and even family reveal sides of themselves she never knew, giving her a glimpse into who they are deep inside. But all of that comes to an abrupt end when Galahad saves her from her father's drunken abuse one night, and they have to flee. The end is triumphant, passionate, and heartbreaking, and to say more would be to ruin the conclusion of a very fine story.

This is one of the few books that have truly affected me on a deep emotional level recently. It's drawn in a style very similar to PvP (pvponline.com), enough so that I was drawn to it and picked it up for that reason alone. But it's really a very melancholy story, full of sadness and pain and decadence, with threads of wonder and hope running through it, like any true fairy tale. The characters are all fully-realized, each looking almost like cut-outs only to expose their dreams and fears and become more real. The way that we do view people, simply as "others" that we pigeonhole, until we get a glimpse of who they really are, and then they suddenly become as human to us as to Jo. It is the story of one girl growing up, trying to come to grips with her past and her future. The inspiration may be fantastic, but the feelings are entirely real. We see her starting to live life again for the first time in years, her many disappointments and failures, and slowly discovering who she is in the world. And it is all done very finely, death and pain and escape and joy mixed in with such respect that you never feel this is anything but real. As a fairy tale should be, one written for our age.

The dialogue is also well-used, and feels very realistic. We never see into anyone's thoughts; we never need to, because our view is of Jo, though her thoughts are often written down in a journal or opened up to Galahad. The narration is very low-key, preferring to let the story tell itself once it's under way. The art, of course, is stunning, easily conveying emotions, clear events, and important details. Obviously a quite solid work that can bring new insights and hope to anyone struggling with their own future.

This book will definitely appeal to anyone who has ever been in this position, especially those in it right now. There is some violence and suggestive sex, but the emotional pain and turmoil far outweighs that. But the end offers a mixed hope, that life can go on.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Tale into the Heart of a Woman and her Friend........2002-09-24

A surface skim of this book might suggest that this book is simply a female urban version to The Iron Giant. Well, this book is far more than that. It is a glorious coming of age tale about a young woman and a strange being who manages to open her eyes to the true glory of herself.

The girl, Josephine, is a wondeful lass who can find neither happiness nor peace outside of her job at a small auto garage as a good mechanic. Her home life is hellish with a fat bullying thug of a father and a doped up broken zombie of a mother in a spiteful neighbourhood that sees her as a freak. All of this takes their toll on her self esteem as she looks on enviously at the social life that other women seem to take on at ease.

It all culminates with a flight of fancy as she builds a construction of a idealed perfect man from spare auto parts. That little indulgence takes on a wonderous tone when a freak bolt of lightning strikes the construct and brings him to life. Eventually, the mechanical man and Josephine meet and the girl gains a companion she never anticipated.

In the story that follows, Jo struggles to teach the Robot, who soon dubs himself as Galahad from Arthurian legend, how to communicate and the complexities of life and existence. In return, Galahad helps make her see the true beauty of her nature that the world of fools around her cannot perceive even as she strives to fit in a square peg in a round hole kind of world. However, events take a terrible course of their own that will forever change the lives of the characters.

This book is American sequential art at its finest with a story that speaks to the human spirit while giving voice to those whom the world has kept silent for so long. It's quiet, funny and yet poignant in the beginning until the narrative builds to a shatteringly tragic but triumphant climax that will touch your soul. The truths expressed are age old and universal, but the telling will give them an immediacy and power that stay with you.

If you like comics, or want to see what the medium can be like in fiction, then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

                                Book Description

Is there a universal language of love, a "kinship with all life" that can open new horizons of experience?

Example after example in this unique classic -- from "Strongheart" the actor-dog to "Freddie" the fly -- resounds with entertaining and inspiring proof that communication with animals is a wonderful, indisputable fact. All that is required is an attitude of openness, friendliness, humility, and a sense of humor to part the curtain and form bonds of real friendship.

For anyone who loves animals, for all those who have ever experienced the special devotion only a pet can bring, Kinship With All Life is an unqualified delight. Sample these pages and you will never encounter "just a dog" again, but rather a fellow member of nature's own family.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Simple Unavoidable Secret.......2006-07-11

I can't count how many copies I've bought of this book because I keep giving it to people. Years ago, it got me to study my cat tracking a cockroach without letting the bug know he was watching. That started my process of becoming more carefully observant of everything around me. It isn't ESP. It is, simply, paying attention. Most importantly, it is love, respect, and appreciation for All Life. By the time you finish reading (no doubt still hungry for more), you'll have gotten the message and probably given it a try. If you're serious about it, you'll find your life changing little by little and you'll discover how you can improve your relationships with others - animals or people - or insects, plants, and the planet itself. Once I chose to be somewhat of a reclusive hermit, but I couldn't do it because I have literally millions of intimate friends. The evidence of long ago that there was harmony among all on earth is still present. In choosing to stand there, we can begin to resolve our differences. We can evolve as humans. We can put an end to war and pestilence unfailingly, "whenever the human does his required part." Written in 1954, Boone's message is more important for us now than ever.

I read this book back in the late 50's and still own my original copy. It had that much of an impact on me! I have always been an animal lover, esp. dogs, but this book taught me more respect for all living things. I was fascinated with Boone's experiences and remember way back then trying to control a fly in a similar way. (I don't remember if I were successful.)

Today you can find book after book after DVD about "_________Whisperers" (fill in the blank with a type of animal), many of which are not unique (Cesar Millan IS the REAL thing, however!), but this book was a foundation book for all the rest.

I highly recommend reading it and am delighted to see it's back in print. Now I don't have to loan it out with the fear I'll never be able to replace it--actually, I still won't loan it out. Friends, here it is; buy your own copy!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Juicy and Right to the Heart!.......2006-02-27

My life has been about animals for so long...I even run a pet-care business! When I was kid, I knew all this stuff. But then I "grew up" and somehow lost track of the wonder of 'being still' and 'knowing.' In this phase of my life I'm finally back on track -- due in large part to the amazing animal teachers in my life. (And some great insight by humans as well!) This book really hits the mark when it comes to understanding the bond among all living things. It's straightforward and thoughtful and full of love. Just like you want all your relationships to be! It's a must have for any animal lover's library.

I have made a gift of this book to a number of friends and having ordered another totally enjoyed it all over again. Delightful and sensitive it is a must for all generations regardless of age.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Empathy For All Life.......2005-04-12

Mentally connecting with animals and insects? Boone tells the true story of his quest to understand their world from a totally non-anthropocentric (human superiority) view point by becoming a willing student and admirer of dogs, bugs, etc., in hopes of learning about them.

His open, non-judgmental attitude while attempting mental contact opens up a whole new world of communication and friendship. He bungles along with trial and error, but he soon finds out that non-verbal language of thoughts and feelings is just about all that is necessary to commune with them and this, coupled with true admiration and love for what each critter is and does, gives them the safe comfort zone they need to feel appreciated and open with him.

Boone opens the story with an exceptionally well trained, smart and alert police dog from Germany named "Strongheart". The dog was brought to Hollywood to be groomed for films and he becomes a sensation in several films such as Jack London's "White Fang", et al. London, of course, is one America's most famous writers- especially known for another and even more popular dog story, "Call of the Wild"- both stories a must for all animal lovers. As a note of interest, Strongheart was the first dog to star in film and preceded the popular "Rin Tin Tin" series.

Larry Trimble, the man who trained Strongheart for the movies, had to take a break from Hollywood and go to New York for business, so he asked the screenwriter Boone to "dog watch" for him and here the fascinating tale of their meeting of the mind/spirit and friendship begins.

Boone goes on to tell of other critters he learned to commune with and finishes the book with a fly he befriends and calls "Freddie". I learned about Freddie from a reference in Joanne Elizabeth Lauck's book, "The Voice of the Infinite in the Small"- another beautiful treatment of finding empathy for life in all it's marvelous creations- especially bugs.

If I hadn't had many of the same incredible experience's with critters that Boone writes about, I could easily have dismissed this stuff as interesting, but hard to believe. My experiences did not come close to the intentional, driven need to know that Boone writes about and yet, I still have had some very consciousness awakening experiences of inter-critter, if you will, communication.

This book is a gem and a fast read- too fast, you will want more!
