    Book Description

Financial crises have occurred throughout history, resulting in the loss of national and international public and personal wealth, creating political uncertainty and shaking the foundations of the national, regional and international economic and social order. This book provides answers to the basic questions of what could have caused some of the more recent regional financial crises, what their key characteristics were, how they could have been prevented, what lessons national governments, central bankers and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have learned and how such crises could be prevented in the future.
The authors include current and former cabinet members of national governments, central bankers, IMF officials, scholars and practicing economists in both national and multilateral organizations, all of whom have either participated in the management of the various types of financial crises they analyze and discuss and/or have made major contributions to their understanding, including recommendations of how they could be avoided in the future.

This is one of the few books on cannabis to avoid high-voltage hyperbole in favor of a simple, easy-to understand story. The Sinsemilla Technique tells how law enforcement agencies forced marijuana growers to grow fewer and fewer plants on smaller and smaller plots of land to avoid detection. To make up for the lack of quantity, marijuana growers were forced to improve the quality. Thus was born the science and art of growing plants without seeds, or "sin se milla." The Sinsemilla Technique tells the story of life in the marijuana gardens of the West Coast. It is richly illustrated with real-life stories that make the sinsemilla technology come to life. The Sinsemilla Technique is beautifully illustrated with black and white and color photographs (check out the infrared photos of hidden gardens!), well-crafted line drawings and charts filled with growing information. No high-voltage hyperbole here. Just a simple, fun and very-informative read!

The book reviews methods for the numerical and statistical analysis of astronomical datasets with particular emphasis on the very large databases that arise from both existing and forthcoming projects, as well as current large-scale computer simulation studies. Leading experts give overviews of cutting-edge methods applicable in the area of astronomical data mining. Case studies demonstrate the interplay between these techniques and interesting astronomical problems. The book demonstrates specific new methods for storing, accessing, reducing, analysing, describing and visualising astronomical data which are necessary to fully exploit its potential.

          Book Description

Sigurd F. Olson was the most beloved wilderness advocate of his generation. His renowned writings, including the nature classics The Singing Wilderness and Listening Point, evoke the singular beauty and richness of the northern woods and lakes and reveal a philosophy of preservation that is as eloquent and relevant today as when he first wrote. The wilderness was the spring of happiness in Olson's life, and he devoted himself to the pursuit of sharing this magic with others and ensuring its future existence.

Revealing Olson's understanding and love of wilderness, Spirit of the North gathers together for the first time the most quotable and memorable of his well-loved passages gleaned not only from published works, but also from personal letters, journal entries, and speeches. Reflective, anecdotal, and universally poignant, this book is a chronology of thoughts and experiences that ebb and flow in their assuredness and reveal the whole man, a wilderness icon mired in doubt while he doggedly refused to abandon his dreams. David Backes, preeminent Olson biographer and scholar, contributes an introduction to each chapter, illuminating the historical context and personal significance of Olson's words.

Frequently, during a quiet moment of contemplation on a canoe trip, Olson would read brief passages of poetry and prose scrawled on small scraps of paper for inspiration and peace of mind. Similarly, Spirit of the North is the ideal wilderness companion, passionate, authentic, and deeply reverent of the natural world.

Deftly edited by David Backes, Spirit Of The North: The Quotable Sigurd F. Olson collects the words of wisdom and insights of conservation activist and writer Sigurd F. Olson (1899-1982) whose many honors include the highest possible from the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Izaak Walton League. A moving and poignant testimony, Spirit Of The North is an impressively memorable and inspiring compendium of reflections upon the power and beauty of nature, and of man's duty to help preserve the natural world, the higher philosophical issues concerning who we are, and what truly has meaning in our lives. "Final victory always goes to those who keep fighting for a worthwhile ideal in spite of reverses."

              Book Description

In 1897, famed explorer Robert Peary took six Eskimos from their homes in Greenland to be "presented" to the American Museum of Natural History. Among the six were a father and a son. Soon, four were dead, including the father (whose bones, unbeknownst to the son, were put on display). One returned to Greenland. And the other -- the young boy -- remained, the only Eskimo in New York for twelve years. His name was Minik. This is his story. A story of lies and deceptions. A story about the price of exploration. A story about discovering the truth of a culture.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2006-03-22

A marvelous book. Smiler's Bones is exciting and funny, tragic and inspiring. The author dives deeply into this fascinating story of a real boy, expanding it and painting in long-forgotten details of Minik's life, until the reader is left at last with both a vivid sense of life in turn-of-the-century New York and the glaciers of Greenland, as well as an expanded sense of what it means to be alive in any era. At the age of forty, I found it very moving, and I suspect the young reader just beginning to emerge from an obsession with Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew would find it utterly engrossing. Highly recommended.

              3 out of 5 stars good but...........2005-08-01

while this is a wonderful book and is absolutely haunting, it (i believe) cheats the reader out of the ending. the happy ending supplied by the author is inauthentic and detracts from the story.
however, the alternating chapters are heart-wrenching and what this boy went through was absolutely devestating. kids should know about the atrocities of the past, however bad.

              5 out of 5 stars exciting eskimos.......2005-02-16

I just finished Smilers Bones and it was great. It was hard to get into because it kept going from present to past without telling you. Also, it was hard to figure out the Eskimo language. But it was really good once you got into the book. It's a story about the explorer Peary and how he brought six Eskimos from Greenland to New York city and put the on display at the Museum of Natural History. They all die but the youngest boy, Minik. It's really the story of his survival. The other part of the book thats good is learning about Eskimo customs. A little bit of a surprise ending. It's also a true story. Read the authors notes at the end of the book. Definitly worth reading.

Self-healing can be a long journey--one that starts with having to wade through miles of misinformation and flavor-of-the-week hype. In an attempt to help sort out the hodgepodge of material on various methods of improving your health, Jane Brody and Denise Grady have assembled a book filled with carefully analyzed articles written by themselves and the reporters of The New York Times. Insightful and informative, The New York Times Guide to Alternative Health doesn't present a specific how-to plan for anyone; rather, it provides readers with a practical reference tool for everything from herbs to homeopathy.

The chapters are divided into general categories, most of which involve items that are ingested. Herbs, foods, minerals, vitamins, combination supplements... the list seems endless. Remaining chapters are devoted to a variety of more physical remedies like tai chi, acupuncture, massage, and meditation. In every case, you'll find a distinctive newspaper style quite different from the personal--not to say touchy-feely--format of most alternative health books. After noting the studies and statistics cited, even the hardiest skeptics may decide to add a daily multivitamin or reconsider hormone replacement therapy. Some of the writers are the biggest skeptics around; as one says on the topic of vitamin-rich cosmetics, "I've been known to skip the workout and just tone my eyelashes." Whether you're a chronic doubter or have a tendency to believe everything you read, this guide has a deserved spot on the shelf, especially as a reference for double-checking suggestions from Web sites, well-meaning friends, or other less straightforward sources. --Jill Lightner

                Book Description

An indispensible resource for anyone interested in alternative medicine.Nearly half the American population has at some point consulted a practitioner of complementary medicine -- a chiropractor or a specialist in acupuncture, homeopathy, massage therapy, or herbal or Chinese medicine. The amount of money spent on treatments and products in these areas is staggering, yet we still know little about their efficacy.Adhering to the same high standards of investigation used by mainstream medical science, Jane Brody, Denise Grady, and the reporters of The New York Times take a hard look at the products, the research -- and the scams. They reveal the facts about unregulated dietary supplements, interactions between herbal and prescription medicines, and the many theories about the power of the mind over physical ailments. They evaluate claims about popular remedies like echinacea, ginkgo, and St. John's wort, and review the increasing body of scientific data on alternative treatments, including critical government case studies.Contributors to this timely and authoritative guide include star writers of the health, science, and business pages of The New York Times, whose articles are prized by those seeking practical, reliable, well-researched reporting on vital health issues.

I really admire Jane Brody, but some of the material in this book is 4-5 years old. In the fast paced world of integrative medicine, some info seems a little dated.

                  Book Description

In 1868, Jack Renton, a teenage Scots sailor, was shanghaied in San Francisco. In 1876, he was rescued from captivity on the Pacific island of Malaita, home to a fearsome tribe of headhunters. After the rescue, in a sensational best-selling memoir, Renton recounted his eight-year adventure: how he jumped ship and drifted two thousand miles in an open whaleboat to the Solomon Islands, came ashore at Malaita, was stripped of his clothes, possessions and his very identity, but lived to serve the island’s tribal chief Kabou eventually as his most trusted adviser. For all the authenticity and riveting detail, however, it turns out that Renton’s chronicle glossed over key events that made him the man that Kabou said he loved, “as my first-born son.” Mining the oral history passed down in detail from generations of Malaitans, documentary filmmaker Nigel Randell spent seven years piecing together a more complete and grislier account of Renton’s experience—as a man forced to assimilate in order to survive. While The White Headhunter is the story of a man transformed by an island, it is also the story of a man who transformed the island as he prepared it for the onslaught of Western civilization.

                    Book Description

This pathfinding collection shows how the health of the planet is inextricably linked to the psychological health of humanity, individually and collectively. As such, it is sure to become a definitive work for the burgeoning ecopsychology movement, which is both a new beginning for environmentalism and a revolution in modern psychology. Collected here are writings from the premier psychotherapists, thinkers, and eco-activists working in the field, including:
James Hillman, world-renowned Jungian analyst, relating the "one core issue for all psychology" - the nature and limits of human identity - to the condition of the planet
Chellis Glendinning, author of My Name Is Chellis and I'm in Recovery from Western Civilization, alerting us to "the link between the psychological process of addiction and the technological system"
Carl Anthony, former president of Earth Island Institute, arguing for a "genuinely multicultural self and a global civil society without racism"
Ralph Metzner, president of the Green Earth Foundation and author of Maps of Consciousness, decrying our loss of "respect for the mysterious, and humility in relationship to the infinite complexities of the natural world"
Joanna Macy, writer, therapist, and Buddhist, noting that "we all need to unblock our feelings about our threatened planet" if we are to work through out "environmental despair"

3 out of 5 stars psychology wakeup call.......2006-03-09

This book contains essays from a variety of sources. It does not tell you what ecopsychology is but tells you why it makes sence.
It quotes many psychologists, even Freud, and analises the real issues of today. Excellent material for a college thesus, but no real info on the techniques used/

                    5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for a thesis.......2002-08-03

This is a highly informative book. It tells about people's different points of view on the highly volatile and up-and-coming field of ecopsychology. This book is a great source of information and knowledge of the field as well as it's a pretty easy read. I used this book as a jumping off point for research for my undergraduate thesis. If you are interested in environmental issues and psychology, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars still the classic.......2001-12-23

Assembled here are some of the leading lights of ecopsychology, with papers and excerpts from the books they've written: Roszak himself, Aizenstat, Hillman, Gomes, Glendinning, and on and on. A rare collection of important voices.

The idea of ecopsychology is to open up awareness to the unheard voice of the Earth. "Animism" is a 19th century assumption that assumes the world lives only to the degree we project into it. The authors here realize that animism is a reductionistic and outdated concept that only serves to justify the ongoing rape and dematerialization of the natural world--a world that in fact projects her presence into those of us who can learn to hear her.

This is not a back-to-nature project but a necessity if we are to preserve what's left of the Earth from our greed, haste, and the global warming of the psyche endemic to a society of rapacious and immature consumers too bent on private advantage to do what our ancestors did for a million years of history and prehistory: recognize and respect her personhood. And today, we can do so with all our critical faculties intact and a bit of help from green technics.

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2001-12-15

To those who are environmental activists, this explains much of what the lay person thinks. This book I don't feel was meant to be a textbook of sorts, but it helps people who are trying to open up the minds and hearts of the human race to realize that we each as an individual can control how much and in what way we impact mother earth. Fact upon fact have been given out to try to convince people of the terrible acts we commit against Mother Earth and yet some people still don't feel they are responsible. I enjoyed reading the book. Honestly, I didn't rad the book to critique what the authors believe or rate their knowledge or intelligence, I read it for information on how to help! I feel it will help me to present my views to people in ways that they may understand and I will understand more of how people perceive them.

1 out of 5 stars Animistic sentimentality disguised as science........2000-06-07

Look, these guys are talking out of their hat. They'll use lots of impressive sounding words to try to convince you that what they claim is irrefutably scientific, and make a lot of generalist statements without any supporting data. What it really sounds like is religious dogma of some sort, not the statements of scientific professionals. They make references to Freud that even an undergraduate student of psychology would know are false or misleading, and make use of the most misleading tricks of logic in an effort to just run over the reader and override any critical thinking attempts that could be used to possibly question their line of thinking. When the authors are not attempting to obfuscate their agenda, they are constantly complaining about the ecological crisis the world is in, without offering any possible solutions except for vague statements about changing paradigms. One of the first chapters is nothing but a rambling, sugar-coated ode to the life of a hunter-gatherer, where all the author does is idealize the supposedly simple lifestyle of the "noble savage". Things he left out? Snake bite, unavailable antibiotics, death from starvation, infanticide, tooth decay, superstition, I could really go on. I'm not saying that civilization is everything it is supposed to be, but let's not completely idealize its opposite either, and that's something these guys are completely guilty of. I, probably like yourself, consider myself globally conscious and am interested in protecting and preserving the wild places of the Earth. However, I am also, hopefully just like yourself, not interested in losing my ability to think critically in the process. Please just avoid this book, which really has nothing to do with psychology at all.
