Book Description
Every day, 700,000 Americans working in Japanese companies confront the "rice-paper ceiling." International business consultant Rochelle Kopp exposes this invisible obstacle to advancement at Japanese corporations, how it operates, and what you can do to "break through" it to improve your workplace relationships and career prospects. Along the way she details case studies that reveal the profound differences between Japanese and American work styles and cultures. If you work for a Japanese company, or plan to, you need this book. "A revealing, readable account of American-Japanese interactions in the workplace."-Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard Business School
Rochelle Kopp is a Yale graduate with an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. She is Managing Principal of Japan Intercultural Consulting in Chicago.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for individuals that work for a Japanese company.......2005-08-19
I currently work for a large Japanese and have identified many of the issues that were written in this book. Recognizing many of the issues that Americans have working for Japanese corporations is one thing, but understanding the many drivers is another. The book was 'right on' on so many issues is was scary. This truly is a must read for anyone that works for a Japanese company or wants to work for a Japanese company. Although at times it can be a bit redundant, the book was a easy read and very well written.
For American employees of Japanese corporations.......2001-02-08
In The Rice-Paper Ceiling: Breaking Through Japanese Corporate Culture, Rochelle Kopp notes that although more than 700,000 Americans are currently employed by Japanese companies, very few Americans are in top-level management positions with those firms. The explanation lies in the real but almost invisible barrier that prevents sufficient communication across the cultural divide. Due to differing attitudes toward work, goals, accountability, and a variety of other factors, American employees and Japanese bosses often have completely opposite assumptions about how things should get done. Japan's current economic slump (and the litigation pending against such companies as Mitsubishi) clearly show that Japanese managers are not infallible. Success comes from honest communication and mutual understanding of goals. Highly recommended reading for American employees of Japanese corporations, American governmental and economic policy makers, economists, as well as both Japanese and American corporate executives, The Rice-Paper Ceiling provides numerous practical and forward-thinking strategies for getting beyond the culturally induced conflicts as Rochelle Kopp provides a very highly recommended, insider's guide to what really goes on inside the Japanese corporate system.
An excellent introduction to Japanese corporate culture!.......1999-06-25
This well-written and thought-provoking book outlines some key differences between American and Japanese corporate culture--with a sense of perspective and a touch of humor. I highly recommend it to Americans working with Japanese firms...and it may be of interest to Japanese businesspeople wondering how younger Americans view their professional ethos.

Book Description
An up-to-date progress report on the current status of solar-terrestrial relation studies with an emphasis on observations by the Russian Interball spacecraft and the Czech Magion subsatellites. Papers in the volume describe the various spacecraft in the International Solar-Terrestrial Program and the research questions that they are being used to address. The emphasis is on correlative studies employing multiple instruments and multiple spacecraft.
The book begins with a description of each spacecraft active in 1998 and describes the roles they can play in correlative studies. This is followed by an up-to-date status report concerning ongoing studies of the solar wind, foreshock, bow shock, magnetopause, magnetotail, and ionosphere, with an emphasis on the observations made by the four Interball spacecraft.

great book for the new england turkey hunter.......1998-03-15
I read this book some years ago and found it invaluble to anyone who hunts wild turkey in the new england states. Instead of giving general turkey hunting info or focusing on southern states as many books do, this one tells about tactics for the northeast and gives a lot of historical turkey data for each of the new england states. Unfortunately, I lost my copy a few years back and since I was able to locate it at Amazon.com I will be buying a new one. Mike Koffink

Everything you've ever wanted to know about cruises.......2007-01-13
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (1/07)
Every question you've ever had about cruising and quite a few you've never known how to ask will be answered if you take the time to read this marvelously comprehensive guide to cruising the Caribbean, Hawaii, New England, Alaska and Europe. Corey Sandler's "Econoguide® Cruises" is a wonderfully informative guide to choosing, booking and enjoying the perfect cruise vacation.
The book starts with tips on "How to Choose a Cruise" (including extremely valuable information on how to get the best possible rate), "How Big is BIG?" (great tips on whether bigger is better and when is a new ship better than an old classics), "Where in the World Do You Want to Go?" (with practical tips on ports of call and ports of embarkation and more), "How to Buy a Cruise" (choice of travel agent, need for insurance, best way to pay for cruise) and "Your Home on the Water" (how to choose the cabin).
The following sections deal with the life on board - including very detailed descriptions of possible expenses on board and how to best deal with them, safety at sea, dining on the high seas (including my all-time favorite cruise advice on a sensible dining strategy - Don't be afraid to skip a meal. Missing an occasional breakfast or lunch won't kill you.), getting to the port on time (very, very important - you definitely do not want to wave good-bye to your ship leaving without you!) and the "Before You Set Sail" section (valuable advice on what to pack, tips on paperwork and passports, medical needs and personal supplies, cameras, arriving at the pier, boarding, immigration and customs information and lifeboat drills).
This practical part is followed by wonderfully entertaining and informative cruise diaries from 13 different cruises. While amusing reading in themselves, they also offer additional insights into the life on board of different ships. They should also make you want to experience each and every one of those voyages.
The last part of the book deals with cruise line ratings, ownership, description of different cruise lines, several ships and even the history of cruising. And to make your next cruise even better, the author included a glossary, so you won't act like a total landlubber and stagger around looking for starboard without the slightest idea what that might be.
Engaging, informative and truly practical, "Econoguide® Cruises" is an ideal companion for anybody wanting to learn more about cruising and eager to choose the most suitable cruise as well as get the best deal possible booking it and enjoying the activities both on board and in the ports of call. The author's down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach will definitely make your next cruise experience a much better one.

Wonderful pre-teen angst..........2004-07-01
I read this book when I was 12, and it really moved me beyond words. She is caught in that in between world of girl and woman. This story goes beyond just her family; to the lives affected by super hard times during the depression, and how various people handled it. And, to how she feels leaving her old world behind at the end of things...
I really connected to the way Seeley's relationships were described, and therein lies the unique ability of this book to reach a preteen. If a reader is anywhere between 9 and 13, I think it is safe to recommend this book.
I'm buying a copy to have "on hand" so that I can loan it to my preteen niece and one day, give it to my daughter.

Book Description
In the wake of its wartime destruction, Japan experienced a period of strong industrialization in the 1950s and 1960s, reaching an exceptionally high level of per-capita GNP or per-capita income. After the two oil crises, the growth rate of the economy declined, and it has since stabilized. During this stable period, Japan's macroeconomic performance, in particular the level of unemployment, has been considerably better than that of other industrialized countries. This economic performance can provide us with valuable information on the role of wages and of the labour market. In this book, Professor Tachibanaki investigates the empirical and theoretical issues of wage determination and wage differentials in Japan since the War, concentrating on recent developments. He also examines the relationship between the role of wages and such features of the labour market as employment and unemployment. Japan's institutional singularities - including what the OECD called the `Three Sacred Treasures of the Imperial Houses': nenko-joretsu (seniority system), life-long employment, and enterprise unionism - are investigated on both efficiency and equity grounds. The Japanese authorities collect a great variety of macroeconomic data, including data relating to the labour market which is categorized according to a large number of demographic variables and firm characteristics. Professor Tachibanaki reports and analyses the data that is publicly available, including the Ministry of Labour's annual Wage Structure Survey of over one million employees, enriching it with its own research observations. An introduction to the main characteristics of the labour market, industrial relations system, and wage in Japan, explaining the degree of difference from Europe and the USA, establishes a framework for labour economists relatively new to the study of Japan. Detailed explanations of wage determination according to sex, age, education, experience, occupation, size of firm, and performance takes the reader beyond stylized assumptions about average behaviour in Japan.

Even professionals can use help.......2007-03-09
As a certified arborist I was having a little trouble with my winter i.d. of trees. This little book has helped tremendously.
great guide in a sparse field of study.......2006-03-15
The "Winter Tree Finder" by May Theilgaard Watts and Tom Watts is a compact little gem.
I have not been able to find such a comprehensive and easily portable guide to using leaf scars, buds, and twigs to identify trees in any other source.
The entire book is only 58 pages long and easily fits in a pocket or backpack. Page 1 includes a nice diagram and description of the parts of a twig. Then you progress through a series of questions and drawings that helps you arrive at the identification of the tree. The last few pages include an index and the rear cover has a little measuring rule.
On the whole, this is a useful and fun guide to trees while hiking in the winter.
Useful and extremely portable.......2006-02-17
This is a fine little guide. It's close to the perfect field guide on this under-treated subject--physically small, light and reasonably complete. If your nature rambles don't stop when it gets cold, you should consider this little volume.
Great pocket tree identifier........2005-10-23
I like the way this book allows anyone to identify trees in winter. Its small size makes it easy to carry one a hike. A must for the backpack.
Great little book.......1998-01-22
This book does a very sensible job of helping people idnetify trees when the normal folliage is missing.
