Book Description
Price movements in financial markets are not random. There are actually clues that allow sophisticated investors to uncover trends and make accurate predictions. The key to discovering this predictability lies in a new set of mathematical techniques --the application of dynamic, non-linear time series. This new science of investment is where chaos theory meets the markets. Richard Urbach offers practical advice and applications on the latest mathematical techniques and examines the opportunities these new techniques can deliver.
Customer Reviews:
There is no practical value to this book.......2003-05-20
Hundreds of pages of insanely dense math with absolutely no practical information on how to apply chaos theory to the markets. In fact, the author seems to suggest that it may be impossible to use chaos theory as a prediction tool in the financial markets.
This is akin to a recipe book written by someone who thinks cooking is impossible, so all he can really write about is grocery shopping. NOT recommended! A much better book is "Trading on the Edge" by Deboeck.
The only cool thing about the book is that you can use it to impress your friends/enemies with the title and loads of arcane equations inside.
The title of this book is extremely misleading!!!.......2001-10-11
1) first, there is hardly *any* mention of markets in the
book. I only found two references
to the market in the entire book. the first reference was
early on where a couple of plots of the S&P were shown at
daily and weekly time frames, and the author stated that the
plots resembled each other and therefore this could be taken
as evidence of self-similarity.
the title of the book is mis-leading... it would be as if
a calculus textbook were to call itself "calculus in the markets"
simply because they have a section on compound interest...
2) there is a lot of hand-waving in the theory that is covered.
the author does cover a lot of ground, so it is understandable
that more details and explanations of certain subjects are
not provided. this book *is* a good bibliographic reference,
for example if one is interested in a particular topic, it
could be looked up in this book, and references to all the
seminal works are given.
3) there are better books out there that cover similar subject
matter, and *are* centered on the marketplace: for example,
Mandlebrot's "Fractals and Scaling in Finance", Lo and
MacKinlay's "A Non-Random Walk Down Wallstreet", William Brock
et al "Nonlinear Dynamics, Chaos, and Instability", and
several books by Edgar Peters.
Chaos and Dynamical Systems, but no market footprints.......2001-09-09
I'm surprised that this book got reader reviews that
are as favorable as the reviews posted before this one.
If you are interested in the mathematics of chaos and
dynamical systems, this might be a good book for you.
However, this book is densely packed with mathematics
and unless you have a very solid mathematical background,
Peitgen, Jurgens and Saupe's wonderful book "Chaos and
Fractals: New Frontiers of Science" might be a better choice.
This book covers the basic mathematics of dynamical systems
but does not delve into graduate level mathematics.
If you are thinking of buying this book because its title
mentions markets and non-linear financial time series,
save your money. The author spends five very mathematically
laden chapters discussing dynamical systems. There is nothing
solid on applying the mathematics of dynamical systems to
financial time series other than the observation that they
sure seem chaotic. At the very end the author weakly suggests
that dynamical systems theory might be applied to market
information, but he provides no examples.
People who develop successful market models usually don't
publish much on them, since there is a lot to be gained
by trading them. So one cannot catagorically state what has
and has not been done. However, I know of no case where
dynamical systems mathematics has been used to successfully
provide predictive models (e.g., models you can trade and
make money on) of financial markets. This book certainly does
not live up to the promise of its title.
There are a number of good book on time series analysis and
modeling. For example, see "Wavelet Methods for Time Series Analysis" by Donald B. Percival, Andrew T. Walden. This book
does not deal with financial time series directly, but it does
deal with "non-stationary" time series.
Monumental! But Oh, the math!.......2001-07-29
Everything you would care to know and to spare. Exceptionally well written and comprehensive for a technical work. And the book is highly technical, both in vocabulary and exposition. The math... and there is lots of it... is a stretch for me and I have passed PhD qualifiers in Operations Research and Statistics. So this is not an easy book, nor one to take to the beach. But I assure you that you will be well rewarded for your efforts.
deciphering arcane mathematics.......2000-07-27
As an applied scientist the thought of deciphering the language of rigorous mathematics in any field can be a little off putting. This book is a pleasant change. With its intuitive approach at the start of each chapter, the reader is given a feel for the subject matter, something which is often lacking in texts of this level. Particularly illuminating were the chapters on dynamical systems and embeddings. They gave meaning to what most of my generation had only heard through James Gleik and those fiendish cyclone generating insects. One can see the potential of the subject stretches beyond the financial markets.
For new comers to this field, the collection of algorithms and references throughout the book provide a rich starting point. The writer has provided a sound reference for the researcher and clear signposts in the mesmerizing land of non-linear dynamics.

An enjoyable look at farming and respect for the land.......1997-10-14
A JOURNAL OF THE SEASONS ON AN OZARK FARM, Leonard Hall, University of Missouri Press, Columbia, MO, 1980, 208 pgs., pb $9.95 Before I came to the Ozarks I knew next to nothing about life in rural America. What I knew of farming would fit on a diet plate of vegetables, which came, of course, from the store, not the farm. What I knew of country folk was what I learned from Andy Taylor and Hee Haw. After five years of living in the hills of Shannon County, I've learned quite a bit. Knowledge came from talking to my neighbors, attending auctions, and from walking the dirt road behind my house in the evenings with my wife Julie and Rio the dog. Lately, a great deal was taught to me by well known Ozark writer Leonard Hall in his book A Journal of the Seasons on an Ozark Farm. Hall wrote the Current River saga Stars Upstream and was a regular columnist for the St Louis Post Dispatch. His narrative of a single year intrigues the reader with a simple yet subtle narrative of a life on his farm, "Possum Tro

Book Description
An almost complete collection of the papers given at the International Workshop on Imaging in High Energy Astronomy (Anacapri, Italy, 1994). These proceedings, which concentrate on imaging above 10 keV, represent the state of the art in the field, resulting from the success of many missions (I.C. Granat and CGRO) carrying detectors for high energy astronomy with imaging capabilities. The main topics of the book are Bragg concentrators, coded mask-modulation collimators, double Compton telescopes, the occultation method, tracking chambers, and new experimental techniques. The book also contains some papers dealing with image reconstruction and processing, with an emphasis on the above techniques.

A wonderful source.......2003-07-17
a treasure of information for those interested in exploring new kinds edible landscaping. I cant really add to the review previously, other than the fact the book is mostly geared to the British gardener. Americans like me will need to do a bit of research about the climate and environment of UK.
This is not really a bad thing, but it would be nice to include a little more about the author's climate with a zone map
Invaluable information on creating natural gardens.......2001-02-16
Plants For A Future: Edible & Useful Plants For A Healthier World offers invaluable information on creating natural gardens, woodlands, and farms that are in harmony with nature's ecosystems, and contain a wide variety of easily grown perennials and self-seeding annuals that are delicious and healthy food stocks for human consumption. Complete descriptions are provided for edible and other useful plants which are native to both Britain and Europe, and from temperate areas around the world (including the United States). These are edible plants suitable for an ornamental garden, lawns, shady areas, ponds, walls, hedges, agroforestry, and conservation projects. Author Ken Fern shares his experiments and successes in growing herbs, vegetables, flowers, shrubs and trees. Enhanced with b/w and color photography, Plants For A Future is an enthusiastically recommended, "reader friendly", compendium of information, personal anecdotes, and enriched for the gardener and horticulturalist with detailed appendices and indexes.

Obviously Not An Historian.......2006-03-22
Mr. Brown is not an historian, only a story teller/
The historical quality of his book is dubious.
His illustration of Frederick Fuger, First Sergeant of Cushing's Battery is in reality a picture of Fuger's son, Frederick W. Fuger, an infantry officer who served in the Spanish American War.
Anyone with a passing knowledge of US Army history would recognize the insignia on the figure's helmet as that of an officer in the 13th Infantry, not the 4th Artillery with which Fuger served all his military career.
Anyone can compile and copy reports. It takes a practiced hand to analyze and present history.
James B. Ronan II
He died bravely........1999-06-16
If you visit the Gettysburg battlefield, pause at The Angle and spend a moment beside the monument to Cushing and his men. You will be standing on the very spot described in Brown's gripping account of the battle. Cushing was a distant relative of mine, which makes this book special to me.
Highly enjoyable biography.......1998-04-10
Before I read this book I had no idea who Lt. Alonzo Cushing was or what he did. This very enjoyable book provided a detailed insight into the life of Cushing as a cadet and through the Civil War until he met his death beside his cannons at Gettysburg. The author provides vivid descriptions of the life of a Union soldier during the war and the terrible battles that they fought. A very engrossing and enjoyable book. Recommended for anyone who likes a good read about mans courage during difficult times.

RI Master Gardener Advanced Education.......2007-10-17
As the RI Master Gardener Advanced Education Coordinator, I have used this book for two years in workshops delivered to our membership. The "Locator Key" and identification system is easy to use (easier than using the weed identification systems) and the drawings and descriptions are clear. Would recommend to anyone interested in identifying wildflowers or "weeds."
Best Wildflower Guide I Know.......2007-08-14
Because the keys are based on number of petals, this is the easiest identification guide I have. I take it into the field along with the Peterson's guide, which has better illustrations, and cross-check my flowers.
Very Useful.......2007-06-11
In the past, I found field guides to wildflowers very frustrating. I have both A Field Guide to Wildflowers : Northeastern and North-Central North America (Peterson Field Guides)and a Golden Wildflower guide. Because the aforementioned are organized by color first, one has to painstakingly search though all of the illustrations until a probable match is found. This is time consuming, and for me, very difficult, leading to many misidentifications.
Newcomb's Wildflower guide takes a different approach. Created for the non botanist, it begins with flower shape, then leaf location, then leaf shape, until you have a 3 digit numeric key. Next by looking under this key for more detail, you are directed to the right page(s). For me this is wonderful, it takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you find the correct illustration and description quickly without having to page though a multitude of pink or blue or white, etc. flowers.
Admittedly, this system is not for everyone. Many people may like starting with color, but for me this guide is truly useful in the field.
Great guide for beginners and advanced.......2007-05-23
Overall a great book if you are interested in wildflower identification. I wish there were more pictures. Once you learn the coding, it is easy to narrow what you are looking for. I tried identifying a a flower that I already new by using the coding and was able to go directly to it. Using it to identify others you don't know takes a little practice, but it cuts your search time way down.
A Staple for Every Fan of Plants.......2007-03-08
This book is the first to go into a field bag when headed outside. It is an invaluable resource. A great deal of drawings (mostly B/W) that aid in the identification of Northeastern wildflowers. Note: requires a moderate amount of practice and/or knowledge of plants and flowers to be truly effective.
