Book Description
Nematodes that are parasites of insects are no longer a laboratory curiosity. They have begun to be accepted as environmentally benign alternatives to the use of chemical insecticides, for the control of insect pests. Nematode worms are now applied as biological control agents against insect pests of numerous horticultural and agricultural crops. This book provides a comprehensive review of entomopathogenic nematology. It begins by reviewing fundamental biology and setting a taxonomic foundation for nematodes and their bacterial symbionts. Several chapters are devoted to functional processes involved in parasitism and to nematode ecology. Later chapters describe technological advances and control methodologies.

Voyage Alone in the Yawl Rob Roy
ASIN: 1929516061 |
Book Description
First published in 1866, this book caused a sensation in Europe and America, sparking a wave of recreational canoeing by such well-known figures as Robert Louis Stevenson and inspiring paddlers from the Victorians to the modern practitioners of canoe camping and sea kayaking.
Customer Reviews:
One of the earliest kayaks.......2007-06-06
Scottish sportsman John Macgregor was an outdoor writer and distant relative of Scottish folk hero and outlaw Rob Roy. Macgregor designed and built a hybrid canoe / kayak with a sail and kayaking paddle which he named the "Rob Roy". He then paddled through the rivers, lakes and canals of Germany, France and Switzerland, portaging between waterways on a cart or on trains. This was a completely novel idea for the time, traveling alone, by water, in a boat so light it can be carried, and it fired popular imaginations across Europe. His account of the journey became a best seller read by royalty and laymen alike, attracting newspaper attention and crowds along the route.
"A Thousand Miles" was written as both an account of the journey and a sort of travel guide for those wishing to follow in MacGregors wake. Indeed, fellow Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson was so enthralled by MacGregors trip, he soon made his own Rob Roy, which he wrote about in An Inland Voyage, Stevenson's first published book. One can profitably find comparison between MacGregor and Stevenson's accounts, Stevenson being the genre imitator, but superior in writing quality.
MacGregor's account has a degree of Victorian optimism that is refreshing, not unlike Jules Verne's "Around the World in Eighty Days", the world is an Englishman's oyster with new and exciting modes of transportation making outdoor expeditions available to everyman. At times his account becomes journal-like and banal, commenting on every town, supper and rapid he comes across, and there is no central narrative other than the curious mode of travel and incidental encounters - but for learning about the details of European life in the 1860s and the zeitgeist of the time it is an authentic and pleasurable journey that was influential.
Originally published in 1866, there were many later editions while Macgregor was still alive, I think up to nine, that had additions including a map, discussions of the Prussian War in the 1870s etc.. the success of "A Thousand Miles" would spur Macgregor to take many more voyages and other travel accounts of his trips in the Rob Roy, but this was the first.
Great Book.......2001-02-02
This is a delightful book by a Victorian gentleman who obviously had some dash and a sense of the theatrical, but also a wonderful dry humor and spirit of daring. It is a wonderful book to read as you get ready for an extended canoe or kayaking trip, or just to read by the fire on a cold winter evening. It is interesting to see that MacGregor faced many of the same challenges of traveling by kayak through Europe that you still find today.

Great ending to the mini series.......2006-05-29
In the final book in this mini series, Sue comes to Jessica in the middle of the night and tells her the truth about Jeremy, that he is a good for nothing gold digger, and that Jeremy never planned to marry Jessica, it was all just an act.
With the help of Jessica's sister, Elizabeth, Jessica searches the Internet for any info on Jeremy and she finds out that Jeremy isn't his real name. Jeremy has also tricked two more rich women into marrying him, and at the last minute he stole their fortune and left.
Finally, Jessica comes up with a plan to catch Jeremy. She calls up Todd and the police detective, Sue and they decide that Jessica will plan to run off with Jeremy to South America. Hidden in Jessica's clothes will be a microphone and Sue will be chasing Jessica the whole time.
Everything goes as plans, until Sue gets into a mini carwreck while chasing Jessica in Jeremy's car. Will Sue, Elizabeth, and Todd get to Jessica in time, or will Jeremy have his final revenge on everyone?

Great! A bit anticipated, but never mind........1995-10-20

Book Description
Christmas on a psychiatric ward can be downright depressing, but the nurses of St. Anne's Hospital are determined to deck the blues by decking the halls. There's only one problem: someone's planted a bomb in their brand new Christmas tree. The ensuing devastation leaves seven corpse buried in the rubble of the ward, wiry pine branches protruding from their bodies like the shafts of green fir arrows.
Caroline Rhodes, RN, thought she'd left all her problems in Chicago when she moved to the quiet little town of Rhineburg, IL. But after witnessing the bombing at St. Anne's, the middle aged nurse finds she can't escape her past. Not only is she a suspect in the eyes of the FBI, but now, for some unknown reason, she's also on the killer's hit list. Aided by Carl Atwater, an elderly professor of history at Rhineburg's Bruck University, Caroline goes on the offensive to prove her innocence. She employs the skills she's acquired over her nursing career, observing and assessing both the living and the dead until, on the night of the town's annual Winter Festival, she uncovers the identity of the Mad Bomber of Rhineburg'.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing like a fatal Christmas tree.......2005-04-11
Mary Welk doesn't just gives readers a holiday blast, she adds explosives to it. A Deadly Little Christmas is that most fun read that combines Christmas cheer with a ruthless killer and a registered nurse reluctantly moonlighting as detective. Full of festive details juxtaposed merrily against cold-blooded murder, this an enjoyable page-turner. Merry reading!
A cozy Christmas mystery for fans of all ages........1999-06-04
I love to read a mystery with a Christmas theme, and I wasn't disappointed by this one. The plot was intriguing, and the characters grow on you until you don't want the book to end. I hope Caroline and Carl return very, very soon! Also, the language was clean enough that I could give this book to anyone without worrying they'd be offended. That's a rare thing in a book today.
Suspencful from beginning to end.......1999-06-03
From the time that Caroline Rhodes was introduced to the solving of the mystery, I was kept in suspence the whole way. Every page brought along new information and kept me guessing about who the murderer could have been. Wonderfully written and a great accomplishment for the author. Bravo! I can't wait to read the next one.
Deadly Little Christmas Packs A Big Wallop!.......1999-06-02
Mary Welk's Deadly Little Christmas is one of the very best books I have read in a long, long time. You get absorbed from the first sentence and it just gets better from there until the last sentence. It is full of twists and turns and really keeps you wondering what's next. I can't wait to find out what happens to Caroline and the group next. I would advise anyone to RUN, DON'T WALK AND GET THIS BOOK NOW.
Holidays and Murder! What better way to celebrate!.......1998-11-23
This tale will keep you guessing til the very end. Finally, a believable and likable heroine, a goodly touch of humor, and well woven subplots - and all just in time for the holidays! (This one I'm wrapping up for me.)

Great Deals For Those Who Have Reached The "Big Five O".......2005-01-11
No age group represents such an enormous market of potential consumers than those over the age of fifty.
According to author Joan Rather Heilman, author of Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're Over 50 (2005-2006),
more than a quarter of the population of the United States is over 50, and by the 2020 it is expected to reach one third.
It is little wonder why the business community actively courts this sector of the population that controls most of the wealth of the USA.
If you are one of the lucky ones who have reached the "big five O," hold onto your wallets before you fork out money for hotels, car rentals, tour packages, college courses, airfare, entrance admission to parks, restaurants, buses, trains, sports activities, and even shopping.
Heilman passes out all kinds of "goodies," as if we are children in a candy shop, with hundreds of tips as to how to stretch your vacation dollars.
Dividing the book into twenty chapters, the author presents excellent insights pertaining to various value-added possibilities. However, as stated by the author, it is essential that if you are over fifty, you must very often ask for these discounts. Most vendors and their representatives will not voluntarily offer them to you.
Most of the book is devoted to savings the over fifty crowd can enjoy from the travel industry. Realizing that this sector of the population is the most ardent travelers, it is only logical that the travel industry would offer all kinds of price reductions.
Heilman details the offerings of the various airlines with their names, phone numbers and web sites. Similarly, discounts pertaining to hotels, motels, car rental companies are listed.
Are you looking for some alternative lodging? Did you know that Del Webb Sun Cities, the largest builder of active communities offers a Vacation Getaway program, where you can enjoy low-cost, short vacation stays so that you can sample the lifestyle to see whether you would like to move in? Bear in mind, however, that in order to qualify one partner in a visiting couple must be over the age of 55.
In addition, the reader will discover all kinds of deals concerning trains, buses and boats pertaining to North America and elsewhere. Companies such as Amtrak, Via Rail in Canada, Greyhound Lines, train passes in Britain, France and other European countries offer some kind of a discounts, although requirements as to age may differ.
If you are a sport's enthusiast, Heilman presents a comprehensive rundown of assorted clubs, tours, associations, and other institutions that offer different vacation possibilities as skiing, cycling, walking, golfing, even softball, where special privileges and discounts are offered. Names, phone numbers, and website addresses are included.
In addition to being a nifty addition to one's library, this reader friendly book would make a great birthday gift for anyone celebrating his or her big five O.

Analyzing the progress toward commercialization made in Bangladesh's relatively developed and competitive microfinance industry, this report explores the challenges and implications for various types of stakeholders. Recommendations for positive approaches to improve commercialization of microfinance while preserving the social objectives of microfinance institutions are covered in detail.
Book Description
Using highly specialized, advanced digital satellite imaging-first made possible in the year 2000 with the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-this book presents an astounding collection of images of the Earth's mountain ranges carefully compiled over the course of five years by the German Remote Sensing Data Center. Now available to the public for the first time here, the most majestic peaks on all seven continents are visible as they never would be to the naked eye-in views taken from 500 to 15 miles above the Earth that reveal the entire mountain range at once, unobstructed by clouds, haze, and the refraction of light.
Mountains from Space is much more than a collection of extraordinary pictures; it is a serious work of nonfiction about every important aspect of these fascinating geological formations, from their genesis by volcanic activity to their specific sociological features. Contributions by esteemed scientists and mountaineers alike highlight this provocative study of our planet Earth.
Customer Reviews:
The Beauty From Above........2005-12-21
These spectacular pictures taken from different media (Space.cam using Shuttle Radar) are a unique collection of Earth's mountain ranges on all seven continents, some as seen from Space during the Shuttle Radio Topography Mission. Stefan Dech, professor at the University of Wurzburg in Germany where these 120 images were compiled, as head of the Remote Senisng Data Center over a five year course concludes: "distance creates clarity."
These views of Earth's "natural sculptures" taken by highly technical instruments available only to the Space program, are from a distance of only fifteen miles above the Earth to five hundred miles out in Space. Dech felt awe in processing this geophysical data into actual photographs and now is able to share the marvel for the first time. They allow us to see the beauty and vulnerabilty, and "appreciate its wholeness without boundaries."
Of all the coffee-table books of photos from Space on the market all at once, this shows our planet's craters caused by volcanoes in Hawaii and glaciers caused by global warming like the Malaspina Glacier in Alaska. The world's tallest mountain is Hawaii's Mauna Kea, and the snow is visible on Mt. Kilmanjaro in Tanzania which reaches 19,340 feet (eighty percent of its glacier mass has melted away).
Some of these scientific images are digitally enhanced to make details free of haze, light refraction and clouds. Vast panaromas taken by astronauts from the International Space Station are shown in their glory. The first photos taken during the Apollo missions, particulary 8 and 11, showed the whole Earth as seen from Space.
There is a good view of Anarctica's Vinson Massif, as are Russian, European, Australian, South American (Andes and Aconcagua), the Himalayas in India, and the Rockies and Mr. McKinley in North America. Dech is assisted in this presentation to the public by Glaser, a climate researcher who teaches at the University of Freiburg.
Accompanying the breath-taking photographs, we have some personal acounts of mountain climbers such as Alexander Huber, Chris Profit, Stephen Venables and Reinhold Messner. He holds the claim-to-fame of being the first man to climb Mt. Everest 'without supplemental oxygen.' A great admire of Sir Edmund Hillary (the original conqueror who used an ice pick to cut the last steps 'on the roof ridge of the earth,' Messner was the first to climb all fourteen of the world's 8,000 meter peaks and wrote a book about it, ALL FOURTEEN 8,000ers. He worries about global warming, calling the tall mountain ranges "ecological fever thermometers."
Mr. Dech's conclusion, looking down at those same mountains as seen from Space, agrees with Messner: "the view that extends out from a great distance is a gift." This book would make a wonderful gift.
Messner has also written REINHOLD MESSNER, FREE SPIRIT: A CLIMBER'S LIFE, THE NAKED MOUNTAIN, and THE CRYSTAL HORIZON: EVEREST - THE FIRST SOLO ASCENT.
A reminder that we live on planet Earth.......2005-12-15
These photographs of our planet Earth show an enormous view, however, the details provide an intimate look into our world. The book is a "Oh, look at that.." resource for everyone. The images will draw you back to the book over and over again.
Don't own yet.......2005-12-10
I haven't purchased this book yet. I saw just one picture, of the Hawaiian Islands, and I intend to purchase this book as a gift soon. The picture was amazingly beautiful, ethereal, what the world must have looked like at creation.
