From the supplier: Most economic programs supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are based on fiscal adjustment. The main objective of all adjustment programs is to strengthen public sector savings which, in turn, is intended to increase available domestic and foreign resources, as well as to support productive public investments. The IMF conducted a study of 23 low-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America that have adopted IMF-supported programs for the period 1986-91 to assess fiscal developments in these countries. The study found that the usual strategies used by governments to reduce and finance budget deficits are raising tax revenue and cutting expenditures. Results also show that relatively small improvements in key fiscal indicators have been achieved in these nations. Findings, however, should be interpreted keeping in mind the success of many of these countries in restructuring their economies.

From the supplier: There are three major social policy challenges facing the Eastern European countries in their transition to a market economy: how can people be encouraged to move from low-paid, unproductive jobs to better-paid, more productive, but potentially less secure jobs; how to protect vulnerable sectors of society from the social costs of adjustment; and how to improve education and health when the meager resources devoted to the social sectors are already threatened by inflation and budgetary deficits. Eastern European countries are turning to the European Community, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund for economic assistance and the expertise needed to reform the labor markets, alleviate poverty, improve health, and upgrade education and training.

Best of Temp Slave! is a screaming artillery of work-related stories harvested from the internationally famous temp worker zine, Temp Slave! This book is a mighty megaphone for the thousands who slave in offices where self-worth and job security are forever defined by the word temporary.

My only complaint with this book is that its too short! I wish it were longer! I loved the stories, they were so entertaining!

3 out of 5 stars To live outside the law you must be honest.......2001-03-02

While this book is an excellent recount of the truth of life as lived for most of us (including an essay on what it is like for a real working person to live and work in France, which is no piqnique by any means), literature has a dual duty.

One is to tell the truth about mere suffering and of course Temp Slave does so.

The other is to reinforce the lesson with a committment to truth and Temp Slave does not do so.

That is, it is disingenuous to want to hold the wicked capitalists to schoolbook notions of honesty and plain dealing when within the same essay you recommend an interesting variety of ways of soldiering, goofing off, and stealing time.

Leon Trotsky tried and failed to answer the question of ethics in "Their Morals and Ours." One can read Lev Davidovich as wanting to live justly but ultimately painting himself in a dead end because of a misreading of Marx, and the result was tragic, involving as it did a hammer in the head in Mexico.

The only answer is an absolute committment, from the subordinate side of the job equation, to honesty and fair dealing, leavened with an absolute committment to solidarity with one's fellow workers, extending up into middle management, and, to the extent that CEOs are human, to Jack Welch of General Electric. The lesson of our century is that peaceful change succeeds whereas violent revolution and sabotage does not, instead producing the opposite of the desired effect (as well as good old Fascism.)

The hatred we've seen for people like Mihail Gorbachev seems focused on their verbosity (Gorbachev gets on Russian TV, only to be cut off.) But verbosity itself may only be the process of peaceful change speaking the truth in Taoist fashion, a dripdrop of water wearing away the rock.

The authors in Temp Slave seem anti-intellectual and so exhausted by their jobs and pleasures that they would not sit still for a Gorbachev: but I cannot see how they then have any alternative to today's computerized and prison-like work place.

Human affairs do not follow the rules of machines and soldiering, goofing off and stealing time does not make it hard for the bosses. They have ways of predicting such antics and compensating for them, and one of the most popular ways is cracking down on us fools who try not to goof off.

Human affairs follow the laws of the dialectic, or perhaps chaos theory. Thus bloody-mindedness is not a revolutionary act taking place in a vacuum but dialogic...it sends a message to the bosses, all right, and the message gets an instant response in the form of INCREASED amounts of workplace surveillance and increased crackdowns on The Rest of Us.

It's all very well to feel oh-so-superior to your lifer coworkers when you are a temp of arcane sexual persuasion with an advanced degree in Irish economic history. For it is true that society and the workplace damages people.

But check out your own damage first. While the women narrators of Temp Slave try to maintain a connection with the earth by taking breaks in a nearby park, the male writers seem to maintain a connection with Budweiser in their off-hours.

That's all very well: it is not for me to deny a workingman his pleasures. But it means that we cannot make absolute statements about what pathetic losers fulltime employees are when in many cases they are making the best of a bad situation.

To live outside the law, you must be honest, and I look for a literature of work that is honest all the way down. I do not find it in Temp Slave. Instead, I found it in Ellen Ullman's SLAVES TO THE MACHINE, about what it is like to be a REAL computer programmer, only a cut or so higher on the food chain than the temp.

I know you always say that you agree: so where are you tonight, Sweet Marie?

2 out of 5 stars Dark humor, could use more thought provoking stories........1999-09-15

Thought this book used too many negative incidents, no lessons learned. If you want an original, entertaining, positive and negative look at temping from America's first authored temp (even testified for temps in Congress) read Temporarily Yours by Wendy Perkins. You will love it!

5 out of 5 stars The writing is by temps, who tell the whole truth about temp.......1998-11-28

Best of Temp Slave by Jeff Kelly Garrett County Press; ISBN: 1891053426

This entertaining little book includes over 30 hilarious essays, along with numerous cartoons and comics about temping. The writing is by temps, who tell the whole truth about temping. They also offer great advice for temps on how to get even with the bosses.

Definitely not a rose-colored-glasses view of temping or work in non-union, corporate dominated America. This book covers the daily grind of insecurity, humiliation, and insult that temps endure. Instead of dream world advice, Temp Slave contains advice based upon real world experience, where neither the temp agencies or their clients give a flying damn about the temp, except for the mega-bucks we generate for them.

It is very refreshing to read a book by temps and for temps that show how many temps feel the abused. Best of Temp Slave lets temps see how they are not alone or aberrant in their feelings of abuse and insult. This book is an excellent contribution to the task of re-creating the worker solidarity that is necessary to overturn abusive working conditions in corporate dominated America.

2 out of 5 stars See how low temp employees can go in this book........1998-10-22

In an era of downsizing, rightsizing and mergers, American employees have taken a beating. Never has that been more evident than in this supposidly humorous portrayal of temps (temporary employees) in the workplace today. Brief stories, comic strips and essays relay the plight of temps in their own words. Jeff Kelly admirably tries to give temps a voice through his zine and in this book. But what's here are endlessly wining, devious and downright hostile tales of employees, which I found horrifying. You'll read about major supply rip-offs (as if it's okay to steal because you're a temp and not treated like you want); nasty attitudes; plots to disrupt work and harm others; misplaced mail plots, and on and on. You'll also have the displeasure of reading dark comics that are riddled with anger and hate. I've been a temp, and I do think there are plenty of problems with temp agencies and how companies treat temps. But most of the temps featured in this book obviously don't want to do anything constructive about the situation. They just want to squeeze all they can from their assignments and irritate as many people as possible. Okay, one or two of the stories are funny. And alas, at least Kelly has provided a forum for temps, and in doing that, one could argue he's being constructive and his book is serving a purpose. But I found it a real downer.

                      Book Description

This site-synthesis volume presents 20 years of work at the North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Research Site. It provides the definitive information base for the ecology of temperate lakes, and a general assessment of the role of lakes within their landscapes. The Wisconsin temperate lakes LTER site has had a major role in the growth of our modern limonological understanding, and this book also chronicles the history of this work. The book should be of interest to most American limonologists and a significant number of general ecologists.

4 out of 5 stars Older But Worth the Read.......2003-01-09

Got this item off a Bargain shelf but I wished I had bought it before...

I love the straight forward style of writing the authors use for this travel guide. They seem to really know about the places they talk about and are upfront and honest with their ratings. You really feel that they've "been there, done that" unlike many other travel books which are so stertile you wonder if the author has been out of his own country, ever.

Up Close Ireland starts out with the basics: how to get there by plane or boat, how to get around once you are there, what you need to get into the country, where to look for visitor information, etc. Then it breaks down the country into it's main sections -- Dublin and Environs, Midlands, Southeast, Southwest, West, Northwest and Northern Ireland. In each section you read about the main cities, you'll find a small map of said cities and/or the general area, places to stay, places to eat and what's worth seeing in the area.
Due to the print date of this book, many of the food places, especially in Dublin, and possibly some B&Bs may be gone or changed but I still plan on using this guide when I visit Ireland in a few month's time. After all, the main sights to see in Ireland have been around for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years and are unlikely to have changed drastically in the last few. Cost of everything is printed in Irish pounds (the Republic of Ireland is now all Euro) but the equalization of the American dollar and the Euro should offset most of the differences -- the pound was once worth more than the dollar.

The book ends with an At A Glance Chronology, a list of Irish family names and where to find them within the country and relevant Irish books and videos available.

I give this item four out of five stars only due to it's age. I truly wish Fodor's would replace or update this Up Close guide for Ireland.

Personally, I am using it as part information gathering, part entertainment until it gets closer to my vacation dates.

3 out of 5 stars Light and Travel-Friendly.......1999-12-11

During my six-month stay in Ireland, I found this to be a sufficient guide. Plus, it is pretty light and easy to carry in a full backpack. However, I found that other guides were more descriptive and accurate, so it really was used as a companion guide. Go to a restaurant or pub it recommends and ask about lodging, entertainment, etc. The people there usually will help you quite a bit, plus you find out more info than can ever be put into a book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and very up to date information.......1999-10-11

I recently went to ireland and brought with me this book. Throughout my three week trip, I constantly used this book to find good places to stay, eat, do my laundry and of course drink. All the places it suggest are there not like in other travel books you go there and the place has been closed for years.

                        Book Description

The new Art Encounters series was created as a platform for young readers to develop an appreciation for the work of the great masters. Each book is a piece of historical fiction based on a single painting from one of the great masters and set at the time in which that work was painted. This series gives readers an inside look at the artist, their techniques, style and inspiration. The first title, The Spirit Catchers, is based on Georgia O'Keeffe's "Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves". History and fiction merge in this uplifting novel about a boy whose artistic talent awaits a great mind to uncover it. A child of the depression, Parker begins his relationship with Georgia O'Keeffe by stealing her property, notably a camera. She is prepared to let him rot in jail when she develops the photos he has taken with the stolen camera and recognizes the boy's raw ability. Set against the backdrop of New Mexico's stark beauty, Parker's struggle to find his artistic vision clashes with O'Keeffe's fierce independence and private nature. Parker tries to connect with his surroundings through the use of a camera, while O'Keefe uses it as an aid for finding points of view otherwise difficult to obtain. This book is a literary interpretation of O'Keeffe's painting, "Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves," as well as an intimate look at the artist's fame, her relationship with Alfred Stieglitz, and her creative process.

5 out of 5 stars What a great way for kids to learn about artists.......2004-10-21

My 12-year-old daughter has been curious about Georgia O'Keeffe ever since we visited her museum in Santa Fe last year. So I got this book for her and she really loved it! Not only is the story a real page-turner, but the author has worked in a lot of real-life quotes from G O'K. I recommend this book to any parent who wants to teach their children about art in a painless, entertaining way!

                          Book Description

In the thirteenth century the French kings won ascendancy over France, while France achieved political and cultural supremacy over western Europe. Based on French sources, this meticulously documented study provides an account of how Philip Augustus (1179-1223) brought about this transformation of royal power.

                              Book Description

In 1958, 1976, and 1985, Argentina experienced severe imbalances of its external accounts, which led to attempts at economic stabilization through an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. This book examines these IMF-supported programs and their success in alleviating Argentina's economic problems. Luigi Manzetti explores three aspects of the issue: the programs' impact on the Argentine economy from a policy management perspective; the methods by which different political regimes coped with similar problems and the level of their success; and the relationship between economic stabilization and political institutions, with particular emphasis on why IMF-supported programs encounter problems and how these problems can be overcome. Exploring the previously overlooked relationship between economic and public policies, Manzetti begins his study by examining the balance of payments problems that afflict developing countries along with the role played by the IMF in solving them. He assesses IMF involvement both in terms of economic theory and policy recommendations, portraying the academic debate that for years has surrounded the IMF. The peculiarities of the Argentine case are outlined, as are contending interpretations of the country's chronic economic crises. A set of three chapters fully details the stabilization plans of the Frondizi, Videla, and Alfonsin administrations. Finally, a concluding chapter argues that wrong assumptions by the IMF and the mistakes of Argentina's policy makers were responsible for the limited success of the programs. This work will be an important reference tool for courses in economic development and Latin American studies, as well as a useful resource for academic and professional libraries.

                                Book Description

"We raised our fists and cheered. . . . With the sagas in our heads, with Iceland at its wildest beneath our boots, it would not have been impossible to see Bárdr clumping along the summit ridge, prodding the glacier with his staff, ready to show us the way down."

Iceland is a pictorial classic on one of the last "undiscovered" countries in Europe--reissued for the first time in paperback.
Iceland is often thought to be covered by ice, but in fact it is gloriously green. Lush meadows, wildflower fields, and miles of rich tundra cover a landscape of remarkable variety: deep lakes, bubbling hot springs, tumbling waterfalls, snow-capped mountains. It's also a landscape amazingly alive with massive lava flows and enormous glaciers. The human story of Iceland goes back more than eleven thousand years, and its heritage is told here in a treasury of riveting sagas of real-life heroes and all manner of supernatural beings.
Both the land and the people of one of Europe's most gorgeous countries come to life in this colorful account of the authors' adventures as they walk, climb, and photograph their way through Iceland and connect to the bone-chilling sagas and the unfamiliar terrain. With breathtaking photographs from critically acclaimed writer and journalist Jon Krakauer, author of the international bestsellers Into Thin Air and Into the Wild, and a penetrating narrative from Outside contributing editor and travel writer David Roberts, Iceland splendidly captures the spirit of this enigmatic country.
Circumnavigating Iceland in summer and winter, Krakauer and Roberts encounter tales of monks and Vikings, outlaws and adventurers, trolls and witches. While touring and photographing, they discover the myths and legends of Iceland's stirring history. Numerous other feats--including a hazardous winter climb to the summit of one of Iceland's tallest mountains--round out a fascinating introduction to this unique and beautiful land.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Presented Book.......2006-11-10

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading and beautiful photographs.......2006-08-19

I recently visited Iceland for a a couple days enroute from Europe to the US and found myself enchanted by the country and its people. Returning home, I immediately wanted to purchase a book that would give me a better understanding of the culture, the land, and the history. This book has it all, and has filled me with interesting facts and stories, not to mention the beautiful visuals the photographs give. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in or loves Iceland.

                                4 out of 5 stars Slight Disappointment.......2006-07-26

Well, I must admit a slight "prejudice" regarding this book. I bought it because I've already read all the other books by Jon Krakauer (and loved every one a bunch!). But, this book is quite different from any other that Krakauer has been involved in. Right on the front cover it says "Photographs by Jon Krakauer Text by David Roberts" so I guess I shouldn't really have been all that surprised by the "difference." In fact, I have no choice but to believe that virtually everything that Jon Krakauer lays his hands on turns to gold somehow (this book is no different in this regard), since he absolutely has to be a severely super-experienced pro explorer, mountain climber, skier, paddler, writer and now, photographer, as well, judging from all he's written. If anything, he "under" emphasizes the feelings and emotions, at least, for those of us who've had at least a small taste of the miseries, dangers and pitfalls-- weather can play a big role-- that befall nearly every person who does these things. At some point, if your heart is in it at all, you'll get the crap scared out of you big time, unless you are completely out of your mind, either due to drugs, insanity or whatever. Krakauer is amazing at writing about all of this and more, but you'll find none of that in this book, at least none written by Krakauer. Nonetheless, as I said, Krakauer does anything and everything to perfection and with class, and in this book the text by David Roberts is nothing to boo-hoo at all. He is the equal of Krakauer in his own writing style and he tells great stories which are parts of the endless "sagas" that go on for centuries there, part of ordinary everyday life and culture for an Icelander, but a strange curiosity for foreigners from afar. Krakauer deferred to Roberts here most likely for a couple reasons; because he thought Roberts knew more and could write easier and with better results regarding Iceland, and he probably wanted to focus on developing yet another great natural talent of his own, photography, especially in such a surreal and amazingly different place that most peoples of the world aren't very familiar with. I'm guessing here, but the end results are superb. I know there are the little issues of content and various criticisms about whether they covered Iceland in a "balanced" and "informative" way, or whether the photos really represent the "true Iceland" that you'd see and experience should you take a "normal" vacation there (if there is such a thing). But those types of travel info books can be gotten by buying the title "Iceland" from any number of companies like Frommers or Fodors to many lesser known and more colorfully illustrated travel books that may or may not have as current of info as these well-known ones. I'm sure this is NOT the genre that Roberts and Krakauer had in mind when doing this book. Their book should be in that genre, too, but is very much more than that and I can definitely recommend it for anyone interested in Iceland, whether you have been there, are going there soon or maybe never will go there, but just want to know about the place. This title must be on your Iceland (or Jon Krakauer or David Roberts) list, whether short or long!

4 out of 5 stars In Saga footsteps.......2005-12-27

For anyone into the wild and all pure nature of Iceland, this is a good but advanced start. Try taking Njall's Saga at one hand and this very good-quality pictured book at the other and flip through the pages as you learn more about the Saga, the characters and the actual places where all these wild yet quite Icelandic bravery epic stories took place. This book is also great for anyone who would want to pursue a deeper understanding of the life during 1000 - when Christianity was adopted in Iceland. Again in this book you will get to read parts from various sagas, see turf homes and get a taste of pure Iceland. Enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars The Illustrated Icelandic Sagas.......2005-01-28

This is the illustrated Icelandic Saga companion book. Roberts and Jon Krakauer make me want to go to Iceland-tomorrow.
