After a description of the essential features of viticulture, including a concise history from antiquity to modern times, the authors consider the taxonomy of the grapevine and the evolutionary processes that gave rise to the diversity within the Vitaceae. Particular attention is paid to the genera Vitis and Muscadinia, which are considered a reserve of genetic variation for the improvement of grapevines. A description of the vegetative and reproductive anatomy of the grapevine precedes a full discussion of the developmental and environmental physiology of these fascinating and economically important plants. The concluding chapter considers the potential for genetic improvement of grapevines and includes coverage of the problems encountered, and the methods and strategies employed, in breeding for scions and rootstocks. Special reference to the role of plant biotechnology and tissue culture in the genetic improvement of grapevines is also made.

I would recommend this book to all those interested in plant science, horticulture, and particularly viticulture. Not an ultimate collection of knowledge in this area, but a very nice and original contribution to it.

Compelling, but slightly disappointing.......2004-09-11

Marc Solie is running for his life. He thinks he has killed a security guard at the horrible, abusive detention camp he's been sentenced to. Now he and his dog are wandering through the bleak California wilderness, not sure where they are or even where they can go to find safety.

As Marc walks and hitchhikes north, he thinks back to how he got sent to Camp Heritage in the first place. Through flashbacks, readers learn about Marc's little sister's death from leukemia, his parents' difficult grieving process, and his own, sometimes violent, attempts to get his parents to notice him again. Readers also learn more about the horrific circumstances that led Marc to attack the camp guard and flee for his life.

This storytelling style, gradually revealing details of Marc's past, should be suspenseful, and at times it is. However, the teasing repetition of past events, often stopping just short of telling critical details, can cause frustration. Nevertheless, Marc's story, especially his discouraging attempts to manage his own grief after his sister's death, is compelling and sympathetic.

Although this is not one of the more successful efforts from Edgar Award-winning novelist Willo Davis Roberts, it will still keep readers engaged and rooting for Marc to find safety and forgiveness.

Good, but could be better.......2005-08-02

Tom Beaudoin's Consuming Faith names multiple challenges of living Christian faith in a market-driven society. He pays particular attention to the anonymity of product production, linking global injustices to the clothing and footware found in North American stores. He offers a fine reflection on the use and abuse of unknown human bodies around the world to create products that clothe North American bodies. Beaudoin's investigation of this question began with his own concern about his favorite articles of clothing, and his efforts to track down their sources and the conditions under which they were made. His pursuit was challenged at every turn, and frequently turned up in dead ends.
The book is highly readable and accessible to a general audience. It falls short in two ways. One is that he fails to substantiate some claims. I'm not so concerned that it is poor scholarship, since it is written for a popular audience. But doesn't he think that some of his readers would also like to get their hands on the information he found so enlightening? The second shortfall is that he offers no direction. How are we to proceed? Considering that this started with his personal search, he might have at least offered for consideration the actions he finally chose for himself (besides writing a book). Beaudoin's is a good and thought provoking book, but it could have been a much better book had he given it more.

Insightful and thought provoking.......2003-12-21

Beaudoin's presentation of his theology of consumption and spirituality is very accessible to people new to the concepts. His non-moralizing approach is inspirational rather than guilt-inducing. His humor is delightful. Although I personally do not come from a Christian tradition, I find this book applicable to my own life. I recommend this book to anyone who is curious about global economics.

This book presents analysis of endemic deprivation in India and the role of public action in addressing the problem. The analysis is based on a broad view of economic development, focusing on human well-being and 'social opportunity' rather than the standard indicators of economic growth. India's success in reducing deprivation since Independence has been limited. Recent diagnoses of this failure of policy have concentrated on the counterproductive role of government regulation, and on the need for economic incentives to accelerate the economy. Professors Dreze and Sen argue that an assessment of India's failure to eliminate basic deprivations has to go beyond this limited focus, and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate public involvement in the provision of basic education, health care, social security, and related fields. Even the fostering of fast and participatory economic growth requires some basic social change, which is not addressed by liberalization and economic incentives. The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. Best Shelling Book for All Ages!.......2007-07-09

This great book is packed with trivia, great photos, humor and education. The kids in our family love looking at the pictures and I love the color photos identifying not only many of Florida's seashells but also other mysterious matter that you may happen to find on the beach. I've read it over and over and still find something new each time I read it. There's a section on cleaning shells, how shells reproduce (this is mind-blowing!). What is so interesting is many shells are shown with their inhabitants inside so you now know exactly what kind of animal made that beautiful shell you now have in your hand. The book covers areas in Florida such as the famous Sanibel, as well as other beaches on the West Coast, the Keys and South Florida. You'll discover which shell is worth thousands of dollars, which lump of stuff found on the beach is more valuable than gold and so much more. I've ordered extra books for my nieces and nephews because it is so rich in knowledge.

My five-year old loves loves visiting her grandparents in Naples, FL. Her two favorite activities are swimming and collecting shells along the beach shore. This wonderfully informative, thorough, and beautifully illustrated guide has helped her (and me) to learn all about the various sea shells that are native to Florida. I have looked at other books about seashells but this one is by far, the BEST! If you are planning a trip to Florida and you enjoy collecting sea shells, this one is the only guide you'll need! Btw, we paid the same price for one from the Audobon Society but it left out too many common ones found in FL like kitten's paw ! I look forward to reading the other books in this wonderful series.
