      Book Description

The "Action Training and Research" method of organizational development, pioneered by Neely Gardner in the 1960s, has become a classic methodology in public administration, despite the fact that GardnerÆs work was never published in book form. Raymon R. Bruce and Sherman M. Wyman have presented the power of GardnerÆs work in a form that speaks to the context of modern practice and scholarly thought. GardnerÆs methodology addresses how to change hierarchically structured public organizations whose management is rigidly vested in the status quo. He saw participative management as the key to achieving democratic organizations, reflecting the democratic values and norms of our society. He felt the devolution of management power in the organization enables the people doing the work of the organization to innovate and adapt to their "customerÆs" changing needs. It is, after all, those who are producing the goods and delivering the services that are best able to play a substantial and non-hypocritical role in the decisions concerning those goods and services, with the result that the most efficient and economic outcome will occur over time. The Action Training and Research approach focuses not so much on how to change organizations, but how to develop organizations that constantly change themselves. In this approach, each employee is a trainer and an agent of change. Remarkably, many of GardnerÆs principles are current todayùparticipative management, self-managed work groups and employees, outcome budgets, empowering the employee, and viewing the citizen as customer/owner. All provide a tool for organizational development in todayÆs public and private organizations. This volume will serve as a valuable guide to managers and consultants practicing organizational change in private and public sectors, at home or abroad. It will serve as an excellent resource to all students of action research methods.

4 out of 5 stars If you talk to animals.......2004-12-12

Even if you are not an animal sort of person, this book is a treasure, bringing us closer to what animals are really like. After you read this book, you will know that animals have varied personalities just like humans. The book really shares the warmth that these wild animals who are rehabilitated have offered to us humans if we just listen to them. The book is precious. I would recommend it not just to adults but teens and older children.

This book captures the vibrancy, insanity, and curiosity of life as a teenager. The voices, written by two different authors, are spot on, distinct, and very strong. For a Young Adult work, there's not much in the way of story, but because of the incredibly well-written characters, it doesn't matter. The stakes are high because these characters seems real and their feelings and worries and concerns seem ripped out of the lives of two real people. I highly recommend this entertaining and fun to read novel.

4 out of 5 stars Lovin' the Playlist.......2007-09-19

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, I just finished reading it not too long ago. David Levithan is one of my favorite authors and he does very good on this book too! I'm a first timer for Rachel Cohn but I loved her style of writing as well.
The book starts out with Nick. He is on this stage playing in some queercore rock band. Everything is going great. The beat moves through him, everyone is cheering and dancing, and then.....he sees his ex girlfriend, the one that 6 weeks earlier broke his heart, stepped on it, and then ran over it with a car. The only thing that can throw him off more..although he doesn't see him right away, there is a guy with her. She is SUCH a female dog at times.
Nora is on the sidelines watching her best friend hang out with random guy #500000 and out of nowhere this boy (Nick) asks her to be is girlfriend for 10 minutes. She kisses him.
I know...HOTT! Lol, the story goes on from there. Nick and Nora have one night that seems to change who they are forever. That's the book....their first night together. They go through all kinds of jumps and hurdles. From drag queens to arguing to hotels. This story goes in every direction and I love it. I don't see how anyone wouldn't. It's definetly a MUST READ for anyone that is looking for a good book that will keep you guessing through every chapter.

                    4 out of 5 stars cute .......2007-08-24

This is a sweet book told in alternating chapters from Nick and Norah's points of view. Both are realing from recent heartache and meet by accident at a punk concert. Nick and Norah end up spending a crazy night together dating/not-dating, running/not-running and there is a great view of the life of an older teen in the city.
The best elements in this book are the musical references and the dialog. I actually went around looking up bands while I was reading this and found a new one that I love.
Fast read, good romantic comedy and great music!

5 out of 5 stars helps heal heartbreaks.......2007-07-22

Blame it on cosmic timings, but I couldn't have bought and read this book at a better time in my life. I recommend this book to anyone who's going through a heartbreak. It goes through all the emotions from anger, fear, regret, to hopeful, and finally love. I also love that it variates between Nick's and Norah's point of view to give the reader an both sides of the same event.

3 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story without the Profanity........2007-06-19

Both Authors, Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, contribute very profound and interesting ideas that invite the reader to question not only their life, but the life of those they affect. I loved how this book made me think of my own personal life in a way that I had never thought of before. But as I felt myself being absorbed into the book, with each profound word and sexual comment I withdrew from the book a little more. I felt that both the obscene words and sexual situations did nothing to add to the sheer brilliance of the book. If anything, they took away from the overall message.
This book is an amazing love story between two teenagers who come to meet together at a concert by accident. Through one night, they find themselves slipping into each other as their love grows.
But, at an age of 15, even I felt myself uncomfortable from some of the situations in the book. They were completely unnecessary in developing the overall message of this book.
I encourage other teenagers to read this book, but be cautious as you read it in the company of your family and be cautious with who you share it with.

                      Book Description

Over the past twenty years, questions concerning the nature of early modern European consumption have increasingly become the object of critical focus for historians, cultural theorists, and readers interested in the history of material cultures. Why did such changes arise? Did they create a consumer society in the 18th century? What relationships did they bear to the Industrial Revolution, to colonialism, and to modernization in general.

In Consumption and the Making of Respectability, historian Woodruff Smith focuses on the radical alterations that occurred between 1600 and 1800 in European consumption of commodities produced overseas: cotton and silk textiles, sugar, pepper, spices, coffee, tea, porcelain, and tobacco. In analyzing these trends of consumption, Smith provides an extremely significant and seldom-investigated process of cultural construction: the tying together of several distinct cultural patterns during this century to create a culture of respectability and its impact on popular culture, trade, politics, social dynamics, and literature.

This original and thoughtful work provides a comprehensive and much-needed understanding of the origins of modern consumption and all of its cultural implications.

3 out of 5 stars Some on the spot, some not.......2007-01-15

Published at the end of the Senior Bush's administration, this book listed and explained ten trends that would reshape the world by 2000, as forecasted by empirical data collected by the author. When I first read this book in 1996, I was quite impressed by it, and believed that all the trends would come true. Hindisight ten years later shows that the book was actually quite prescient on many points. For example, the book correctly predicts the resurgence of nationalism in various parts of the world as the Cold War ended and the USSR broke up. Another predicted trend is the privatization of many social services in the US and other countries.

Other predictions, like the Asian takeover of the world economy, has not occurred. Specifically, the financial crises of the last half of the 1990s essentially eliminated fifteen years of profit, property price increases, and economic growth in Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. But all in all, still a good book, and a good reference source for economic data for the late 1980s and early 1990s. As futurist books come, this is one of the better ones to come out in the past several decades as the author uses a wealth of statistical information from numerous fields and sources to justify his claims.

3 out of 5 stars Basically correct about 1990 decade.......2006-04-30

I read this book, translated to the portuguese about six years ago. This book really was about 80% correct about the 1990 decade. There was some failures about the future in 1990 decade?Yes, but they were not big.Congratulations to both authors.
The great problem of this book is that we are in 2006,not in 1986.Then, this book is now outdated.About 80% of prophecies in this book became present and then, some of then are now past.
If we were living in 1986, I would give 5 stars for this book.
Well, we are living in 2006, then I'll give just 3 stars for it.

1 out of 5 stars Forrest for the trees.......2004-05-30

The authors missed the point of the book, which should have been to forecast the future socio-economic trends, and not their personal desire. They barely mentioned the way technology started to shape the new century, and they were so focused on Europe being at peace for almost 50 years that totally forgot there were other countries with enough forces to create worldwire conflict (terrorism, oil interests, territorial struggle, ethnical issues, etc).

My most honest advice is: don't bother, and don't waste your time, unless you simply want to see how much they failed at what they intended to do. The writing is too simplistic and barely factual, and there's no serious authoring or editing effort behind this "book".

3 out of 5 stars No more Mr. Wiseguy.......2004-04-30

I know, it's a little late to be reading this book in 2003...nostalgia, anyone? One trend missed apparently: the rise of terrorism. This goes hand in hand with the fall of communism, because now there's a new bad kid on the block: move over communism, center stage Jihadists. The reprise of fundamentalism was noted in the book, and the turn to the political right, and the concurrent diminution of the "welfare state." Naisbitt et al. wrote about "no more wars." They should have read Lorenz, "On Aggression," before saying all that. War may be inevitable, if aggression is instinctual, but war doesn't have to be always destructive: extreme sports, war games, ritual matches (presidents playing chess?) could do it. Diximus.

4 out of 5 stars The Global Economy.......2003-11-12

1988 accord between United States and Canada to drop all trade barriers

1992 reduction of trade barriers with twelve nations in the European Economic Community

1988 Australia and New Zealands free trade agreements went into effect

1988 Talks about a U.S Japan free trade accord

For a global economy-one marketplace-to work, we must eventually have completely free trade among the nations, just as we do within the nation-states themselves (John Naisbitt - Megatrend 2000)

The United States biggest import is money. Its largest export by far are bonds, stocks, and other financial instruments. The United States is the largest producer in the global economy, it represents 25 percent of the world production and 5 percent of the population. Any country that attempts to remain economically closed and apart from the global economy will be left hopelessly behind.

Global Economy trends 1) Privatization of Business 2) Bankruptcy 3) Stock Markets 4) decreasing reliance on the blue collar worker 5) increased reliance on telecommunications and technology 6) Decreasing size and importance of unions 7) elimination of the command economies 8) the rising growth rate of the pacific rim - the shift from European production to Asian production and wealth (China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore). The pacific rim is experiencing the fastest period of economic growth more than five times of the industrial revolution. China and the four tigers have learned to skip over the industrial revolution and enter the informational revolution.

It takes 8 gallons of water to grow a tomato; 616 gallons to make a burger patty. In fact, the food each of us consumes per day represents an investment of 4,500 gallons of water, according to the California Farm Bureau. In this densely populated state where it rains only six months out of the year, where does all that water come from? This thoroughly engaging, concise book tells the story of California's most precious resource, tracing the journey of water in the state from the atmosphere to the snowpack to our faucets and foods. Along the way, we learn much about California itself as the book describes its rivers, lakes, wetlands, dams, and aqueducts and discusses the role of water in agriculture, the environment, and politics. Essential reading for a state facing the future with an already overextended water supply, this fascinating book shows that, for all Californians, every drop counts.

Carle engages one of most contentious and complex issue that our culture ignores - water. So we don't have enough water in California- you probably knew that. This book explores the nuances of California water - nature, culture, agriculture and infrastructure - in an concise volume that is suprisingly enjoyable for a such a dry topic.

There is enough information packed into this little book to serve as a textbook - as such, Carle has created a valuable primmer and users guide for the Golden State.

This book's strength is its pictures - realistic representations of dry California landscape plants. I would use it as a "brainstorm" book for getting ideas on which species to use in a particular landscape. The notations for each species are also helpful. Definitely one for the library.
